The Lost Future sounds more like a trilogy-ending title, I love it!

Javadoz, your post inspired me to do a crappy attempt at a Layton smiley. Image Everyone's free to edit it, BTW.

Also: almost exactly a month (32 days) for Unwound Future.

Actually, while I love how the title sounds, I don't quite get how it's "lost" either.
Spoiler: Lost/Unwound Future, particularly involving Claire
So they go to the "future" so at first it's like FINDING it. Then it turns out that future was fake so..."Professor Layton and the Future of Complete Bullshit" would probably be the most fitting.
In all seriousness, the title in the end comes down to Claire. I mean, in the Japanese she practically says the title. With her having to go back to her fate seemed more like an "unwinding future" than "losing" a future she was never supposed to have in the first place.

So in the end I guess our title makes more sense but Europe's sounds nicer and rolls off the tongue better.
Can you handle us? So cool, baby, scandalous.

Hm. Doesn't really look as good as the US or Japanese boxart. I'll get the US version. Just because it looks cooler. And 7% more green.

And that trailer is amazing. Too bad it's got Luke's horrible Europe voice. Though they did keep Legalolder Luke's US voice, apparently.
Still, this particular trailer was much better than the first one. After watching this one, I absolutely can't wait for September 12!

His European one isn't just forced, it's also annoying and absolutely not fitting. That's the main problem: Luke is a 13 year-old boy, but sounds like a 5 year-old girl.

Wait, Luke's NOT a five-year-old girl? What madness is this?!

On the other hand, that trailer has me completely and utterly hyped up. I'll probably end up importing a US copy - who wants to hold out one month so they can hear Luke's annoying voice piercing through their brain?

I'm kinda glad the different Layton translations do make efforts, though: going through the entire game so every word is respelled Oxford-dictionary style, and replacing the occasional puzzle to make it more accessible.

Also, is it just me or did the trailer feature Layton handling a machine gun which shot PICARATS?

Sorta liked that trailer better as it showed a bit more than the US one.
The logo, however, is so boring compared to the US one. It just make "The Lost Future" seem even lamer.
And don't get me started on Luke's European voice. Luke's 13 now, not 3. And a male. :grey:

@MJ: It is true that the effort they put in the localization is good.

Going by the name of this piece of artwork I'd assume it to be a type of gold coin or something similar to it like how bells from Animal Crossing aren't even bells at all.

Oh yeah the artwork

Well, either way, it's money. XD

Is Luke's voice the reason why Europe gets all the games after America? I mean, it takes some time re-dubbing and all that, right?

Tell me it isn't. Because it's totally not worth delaying the game a month or two just so we can get a different voice for one character (especially not if said voice sucks).

Not the only one. Remember, there's also other languages they have to translate to, and those translations are always as good and thought out as the American localization. Even the titles are localized from the European english name (Pandora's Box was "Professeur Layton et la Boite de Pandore" in French, "Professor Layton und die Schatulle der Pandora" in German, "Il Professor Layton e lo Scrigno di Pandora" in Italian, "El Profesor Layton y la Caja de Pandora" in Spanish, and "Professor Layton En De Doos Van Pandora" in... Dutch.)

Just because it's fun, I'm going to try predicting European titles for Unwound Future, based on Lost Future:
German: "Professor Layton und die Verloren Zukunft"
French: "Professeur Layton et le Perdu Futur"
Italian: "Il Professor Layton e lo Futuro Perduto"
Spanish: "El Profesor Layton y el Futuro Perdido"
Dutch: "Profesor Layton En De Gederfde Toekomstige"

If they turn out to be all true, you guys all owe me a soda.

But getting back to what I was saying, localization for Europe, in this case, is not just re-dubbing Luke. Although I'm pretty sure German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch versions don't get the faintest of translated voices, the Layton games are very text-heavy, therefore requiring a huge amount of work. It's not a process as hard as the localization from Japan to America, but it still is hard...

...I guess, I don't know, I don't work for Nintendo of Europe.

Like I said before, the English Layton games respell every word Oxford-dictionary style (i.e. "honour" instead of "honor") and actually replace the occasional puzzle with a completely new one to make it more accessible. I can't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure there was a puzzle in Pandora's Box which featured a date engraved into a statue: they had to rewrite the puzzle since in Europe dates are written the other way (date-month-year).

Also, it might just be me and my British superiority complex but it seems like the American hints (when they're different) are a damn lot less subtle than the English ones XD

And like DeMat said, there's the rest of Europe too. :sweatdrop:

And I don't know what you people in Britain get, but in America, we just get random trivia and things that were already stated in the description of the puzzle as "hints". Especially bad in the "Knight's tour" puzzles in the second game.

...I didn't.

And Mask*DeMasque, you don't seem to get it. Hints are supposed to be that. When the puzzle can be done without any hints, these only present another way of looking at the puzzle, so you can see the answer. When the puzzle is actually hard, hints sometimes give you some starting moves, and then you can do the rest. And when the puzzle is hard, but it's mostly trial and error, like Knight's Tour, they just don't do anything, giving out trivia.
The developers know which puzzles the player should be able to solve by themselves, and apply hints depending on that.

I don't remember exactly which puzzle it was, but I remember using a hint coin and the hint was LITERALLY something that was stated in the puzzle's description. I felt so ripped off. :zenitora: Oh, and then I remember there was a puzzle where if you used a hint coin, it said "Don't use another hint coin, because there are no more hints!" and then if you use another hint coin: "I was just kidding about there not being any hints". Ridiculous.

I suppose it wasn't really necessary to change the puzzle, but still. At least they tried.

To be honest, I like the trivia hints better than the ones that lead you around by the hand. At least they're entertaining.

I always assumed that hidden puzzles are things that Luke hallucinates, seeing as Layton never comments on or solves them. During the time Luke spends solving the hidden puzzle, Layton sips a cup of tea and reads the newspaper. When Luke is finished with the imaginary puzzle, Layton hands him some picarats to encourage him to quietly zone out more often.

Anyway, I just finished The Diabolical Box, and have a question regarding it. I'm not sure if this question was already answered in this topic, but really don't feel like reading through 28 pages to find out....
Spoiler: The Diabolical Box
Why the heck does the box kill all who open it? It has some hallucination-inducing gas...and since the people expect to die they hallucinate dying. But wouldn't they just pass out and wake up in a few hours? Why do they actually die? And why were Layton and Luke unaffected? You could argue that Layton didn't really expect to die...but Luke definitely did! So what's going on with that box?

Spoiler: okay, let's see if I can explain this right
So, I haven't actually played DB in awhile, but I always assumed that, yes, it was because people expected to die that they did when opening the box, and the gas triggered some suicidal thing in their brain. Alternatively, (and this is just a personal theory here) no one actually died when opening the box, but did in fact faint, and when their friends/family/innocent bystanders found them, the box was still open and the discoverers were affected as well, overreacted and assumed the person was dead (Exactly like what happened at the start of the game, except the box wasn't even there, so Layton, an extremely smart man, was fooled even without his brain being messed with). Theoretically if this happened enough, the box would gain a reputation for being a killer. When Layton and Luke opened the box later, they were already under the influence of the gas, so the box didn't affect them.... or something. Or you could assume my other theory was correct, and the box didn't actually have the power to kill, so they didn't die.....
I'm sorry if this didn't make any sense. :yuusaku:
