- In my head-canon, the PL games take place in an an alternate 1940s where technology has developed in a different way so if this is 15 years after that, then maybe it could be somewhat film noir-like.
- The first trilogy had Don Paolo and the second has Jean DeScole, but what about the villain of the third trilogy? I'd say Bill Hawks is a good candidate. The man is disgusting, and would make a good "corrupt politician" kind of baddie. Besides, he wasn't caught at the end of PL3...

- Other characters that I'd like to see: Flora, Luke's parents from PL4, Layton with a monocle, Barton, Remi, possibly a few other characters from the prequel trilogy depending on how it ends.

What do you think? :3

Well
Spoiler: Spoilers for every PL game
-I seriously doubt that Level 5 will let go of such a gentleman such as Professor Layton and replace him with such a character as Luke.
-The Layton games do not take place in the 1940's, they take place in present day; besides the puzzles mention modern day technology and we assume that Layton and Luke solve the puzzles when we do as they also hold the same knowlage.
-This too I doubt since the story of Bill Hawks already kind of wrapped up with the third game.

Spoiler:
I like the idea of Luke getting his own game series, but honestly Hawks wouldn't make a very compelling villain, he's greedy, and that's about all he has going for him.
Honestly I always thought that the PL games were present day too, but it would be kinda cool if they did the film-noir style stuff. Not incredibly likely, but still...

Marche -
Spoiler:
Like the others, I don't feel Bill Hawks is prime villain material. Villains should evoke sympathy on some level - Anton, Clive, and Dimitri were great villains (and Descole is shaping up to be one, by the looks of it). By that standard, I would also argue that Don Paolo wasn't the overarching villain of games 1-3.

I'd also go for a new protagonist, but the whole flavour of the Layton games would be changed if it weren't for our trusty English gentleman. What I kind of want to see is a new series of games set in the same continuity with a new set of characters. Maybe they don't even have to be about puzzles XD

This. Layton without puzzles isn't Layton. They even had to include puzzles into Eternal Diva, a animated film.

Also, Level-5's having their annual Vision event on October 19. Mask of Miracles will be showcased! Also, Ni no Kuni, Inazuma Eleven Wii, a Layton-looking game called "Mystery Room", and others.
Also, they're going to announce 4 new games. Could any of this be the Capcom collaboration, or maybe even Layton 6? Let's remember that Vision 2008 saw the announcement of Unwound Future, and Vision 2009, of Specter's Flute and Eternal Diva.

It doesn't seem we are that far off from the fourth game after all.
I can dig the name Professor Layton and the Flute of Malevolent Destiny, but I can't help but scratch the feeling that the titles are just becoming longer and longer......

Heh heh heh, the tentative English name for the 4th game has been known for a while now, in fact I already knew what it was before the English name of the 3rd game was announced (hence how I posted the name as a "prediction" on the last page or so). You guys need to keep up with the times. :edgy:
Say, that reminds me of a puzzle! Have you ever heard this one, Luke?

That title's being around for a while now, it's as tentative as Specter's Flute. Although it's implied (and pretty obvious, considering sales) that it will, there still isn't any official confirmation of PL4 hitting the states or Europe. I'm expecting a subtle E3 announcement like Diabolical Box and Unwound Future, and I don't think the title will be longer than two words, since it's kept a pattern for three games ("Professor Layton and the (adjective) (noun)"). I'm expecting something similar to "Professor Layton and the Phantom Flute" or "and the Spectral Flute". And always remember that "Mask of Miracle" was a rushed localized title for PL5, the game didn't even have models instead of sprites by E3, without even mentioning the Engrish screenshot(s?) and title. I'm guessing it'll be "the Miracle Mask", "the Miraculous Mask", or something like that.

But, if Nintendo wants to prove me wrong by announcing both of their formal localizations, I would be more than glad to eat my words.

Some nice stuff about Layton5. Released in Japan this spring, and follows the timeline of younger *and* present Layton~ =D
Apparently the cutscenes will have 3D characters too. Urk. The sprites weren't too promising... I just hope they don't get rid of those lovely flowy cutscenes that are so very Layton.

It's not like there's been some big news about Layton recently or anything, after all >.>

The September trailer has some 2D animated cutscenes. Which I'm pretty sure will be like all of the game's. I think what they meant is that there will be 3D elements in the cutscenes (there actually was one in the September trailer, some kind of stone statue).

The Ace Attorney crossover would make up for years of lack of information and/or Layton games.

This is an amazing day to be alive.

So is this where we discuss the crossover game?

I think it looks really good so far; gives me a reason to get the expensive 3DS. I wonder how the art styles will blend together though.

Haha, Young Layton's haircut XD

Still, it looks and sounds awesome. I don't even care about the 3D models, they seem to be well animated.

I flipped when I saw young Layton's haircut. It's so very wrong XD
Li'l Luke is adorable ~<3
The 3D sprites still seem a bit... wrong to me. I do so very much love the puzzle style, though. Although I'm still a bit confused to how it'd work with the less action-y type puzzles (like those effing slot ones).

I've finished Lost Future now. It was surprisingly epic and I must admit that the ending made me cry.

Spoiler:
Layton x Claire is one of the few pairings in video games that was pulled of well, unlike the Twilight/FF8 bullshit that's so common these days.

Also, the thought of people hating on Claire because she destroyed their yaoi fantasies makes me sick. Srsly.

*flits in*

I can pretty much echo this thread and say that of the games localised so far, Layton 3 is the best by a wide margin. ^^

And the first one is still pretty damn awesome.

Also, Luke's UK voice in this game is a lot cleaner and less annoying. (Yes it's the same VA, but they suck a lot less this time.)
Does we even do these things anymore?

Am I the only one who prefers Luke's American voice? I've listened to both, and I liked the American a lot better - then again, maybe I'm just used to it. My mind doesn't adjust to changing voice actors well. >_>

I know people thought the British accent was bad, but I didn't mind it...

Really? I thought the general consensus was that Luke American voice >>> British voice.

That being said, I hate Luke's British voice. It's incredibly off-putting and doesn't fit with his American voice at all. Which could be good in other circumstances, but not in this case.

Admittedly, I haven't been active in Layton fandom for long enough to tell, I guess, but I thought that the whole reason he *got* a new VA for the British/UK version was because people didn't like the American. I could be mistaken though, I think I came across it on TVTropes or some such.

In any case, I'm glad I'm not alone. I'm fond of all the American Layton VAs ^_^

I'm not really sure why they changed the VA. Maybe they didn't think the British accent was good enough for actual British people?

And yeah, I love the American VAs. Specially for PLatUF, which, in my opinion, had the series' best voice acting so far. At least, localization-wise.

I think that's the most likely explanation.
I'm personally not very fond of the US Luke, while it's a more mature and subdued performance compared to the UK one, the accent is really hit and miss; too many American "twangs" for my liking. Preferrence seems to be split between which region your in, perhaps the British just find bad English accents more grating (although the UK one is far from perfect).
Speaking of voice acting, Flora's voice was really horrendous in the latest game, the voice change isn't even consistant- in the film she's back to speaking like in the 1st 2 games, which is odd because the actress is the same in each game.

While I'm here, might as well give my opinion on the last two "games"
Lost/unwound Future: I'd have probably criticised this game for sticking to close to the formula of the last two, but the story and particularly the end more than made up for it. Best game yet, and not a knight/chessboard puzzle in sight!

Eternal diva: To be honest, I didn't feel it was that great. Villain seemed a bit stock and generic, plot was poorly explained and uninteresting and I felt that the conductor's performance rather lacking, making many of the scenes he was in fall flat in my eyes. The rest of the voice work was pretty decent, although it did seem to show how narrow a selection of voice actors that the UK has, if you've watched any UK made children's animation from the last ten years you'll have likely have heard most of them.
Still, both the animation and soundtrack were great, and Groskey looks like a character I'll enjoy seeing in the next game.

I thought it was because the British playtesters complained about it or something.

American Luke's British accent wasn't that bad. I mean, it wasn't distractingly annoying or anything. I don't think it justified a new VA. But then again, that's just me, and nobody's forcing me to play the British versions. The only way his British voice can bother me is that there's no other way to hear a dubbed Luke in Eternal Diva (yet). Oh, well.

I'll just pop in here and ask: Why are the VAs for the USA and UK version different anyway? Since both Luke and Layton are British, wouldn't it make more sense to just have British VAs for both the USA and UK version of the games?

I'll just pop in here and ask: Why are the VAs for the USA and UK version different anyway? Since both Luke and Layton are British, wouldn't it make more sense to just have British VAs for both the USA and UK version of the games?
From what I read, the people living in the UK didn't like Luke's voice from the US version because they said that Luke didn't sound like he was British enough. Because of that, they decided to get someone new to redo all of Luke's lines for the UK version of the games. Funny enough, they though Layton sounded British enough. -w-

Yippee, back to the Luke's VA debate.

And I'm just imagining how PLvsAA Is going to be played.

Like, if you could choose sides or something (PL or PW) and play the way you chose (PL = PUZZLES and PW = AAI style testimonies or something) and the sides have different endings. It looks like Layton's the Prosecutor, so he'll have a bad (But somehow EXTREMELY EPIC) ending, Whilst Phoenix will have a happy ending with the baddie set free (Epicly).

I wonder If i'm posting this in the right place. :yogi:

Just a question for those who own it - is the DVD/Blu-ray Edition of The Eternal Diva worth it?

Also, does Amazon UK ship to Australia?

Layton has become my favorite video game franchise now. Yeah, it managed to beat Zelda, Half-Life, Dragon Quest and Elder Scrolls. Since the ending to Lost Future (which I think sounds better than Unwound Future, btw) implies a sequel after the prequel trilogy, I hope it goes on for at least 3 seasons. :3

By the way, when do you guys think game 4 will be released? I'm assuming we will get it at the end of 2011, given the usual release pattern, but remember that there's a pretty big bonus game (London Life) to localize as well... So perhaps early 2012 would be more likely? I'm convinced that we will get it - there's no real reason to think that we won't, since...

1) the games sell very well here as well, which Nintendo is aware of.
2) even after 3DS is released, the DS will probably "live on" for one or two years.
3) Nintendo showing game 5 during E3 was probably just to show us some upcoming games for 3DS, western or not. It's also possible that it was intended for Japanese audiences - the fact that they didn't translate the screenshots or even the title properly in English, which they did with game 3, supports this theory.

On another note, I've ordered Eternal Diva. I've seen it in Japanese twice already but what the heck. Are the voices for Emmy/Remi and de Scole any good?
