I'm surprised there is no Angel Beats topic here. :ack:

I hope I'm not the only Angel Beats fan here, but for those who don't know what Angel Beats is here's a quick summary:

Angel Beats is an anime that gives us a concept of the afterlife. This afterlife is where lost souls who have unfinished bussiness to take care of in their hearts or had terrible lives live in a gigantic high school/boarding school where they take classes and participate in club activities until they eventually disappear, but that is not the only way a soul can disappear from this world. And in this world nobody can get sick or die. A boy named Otonashi wakes up in this world and doesn't recall anything. He meets Yuri the leader of the battlefront and she tries to get Otonashi to join because the battlefront wants to avoid disappearing from the afterlife in hopes to defeat the class president who has the power to make anyone in the world disappear. Once they defeat the class president who they call by the codename Angel they hope to go against God and rule the afterlife.

Ok, I remember in 2010 one of my close friends nagged me to watch this anime, but I wasn't interested at the time. But when I found this anime on netflix I decided to watch it because I had nothing else to watch, once I started watching I couldn't stop.

The animation and artwork blew me away, and even to this very day I still listen to the soundtrack of the anime, Girls Dead Monster was like a Japanese Paramore to me.

This anime also has touching and sad moments that nearly made me cry my ex boyfriend nearly cried at one point. But try to watch the anime from start to end because of you were to watch one of the lighthearted episodes you would probably think you're watching a regular slice of life/high school anime. But at the same time this anime has dark episodes and episodes with epic fighting scenes.

Interested? If so, all English episodes are on Netflix, but if you perfer subs all subbed episodes are on Crunchyroll.

My only gripe with the anime is I kind of wanted the anime to be 2 or 3 episodes longer for more plot and character development but the anime has a special reason for ending after only 13 episodes.

And if anyone asks, even though this anime may be my current favorite, I have no desire for a sequel.

Angel Beats was definitely a great anime to watch. I had recently gotten into anime around this time last year after having watched Gurren Lagann (which is one of my all-time favorites) and I started looking into others. Among the popular ones, I saw Code Geass (favorite of all time), Steins;Gate and then Angel Beats. I also listen to Girls Dead Monster quite frequently, and I simply loved the animation of it all.

Although I never cried once during the show, I still felt the emotional drama seeping into me.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll check Angel Beats out sometime.

I recently watched Sword Art Online (SAO) and I have to admit it was pretty darn good. Even though the second season was worse than the first one it was an anime that was satisfying and enjoyable to watch.
Spoiler: not really spoiler but a summary of the story if you're interested
A new MMO game comes out using Virtual Reality. By using a device that intercepts your brainwaves you can transmit your consious into this virtual game. On the first day though the creator of the game removes the possibility to log out. Only after finishing the the 100 levels (each filled with towns, dungeons open fields and bosses) People will be able to log out. In addition to that when you die in the game the device that picks up your brainwaves will fry your brain causing you to die in real life.

Luckily for our hero he was a beta tester for the game. He knows what, when and where to do things and becomes one of the most powerfull characters ingame.

The story revolves around his adventures and interactions with other players. The life they build within the game and such, pretty darn interesting.

Recently I started with Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. After seeing the first series I was disappointed with the first episode of FMA:B being so extremely similar to the first one of FMA en therefore decided not to watch it. This has been a few years though and I've heard FMA:B is definitely worth watching even if you have watched FMA already.

I heard of Sword Art Online, I heard it was tearworthy. Yeah, I should probably at least see a trailer. I haven't been too interested in newer anime like Fairy Tail lately since I am busy watching older anime like Air, boys Over Flowers, and for the 6th time in a row I am watching Ef A Tale of Memories. (One of my favorites, I recommend it to those who like Angel Beats.)

Personally I thought the original FMA was confusing, but then again I never watched it from start to finish. But how Ed and Al lost their bodies was definately played out better in Brotherhood. But I will admit that the original series has some fun filler. (Mustang vs. Ed)

I love Brotherhood but now I can't rewatch the series without cringing since I know how it ends. And I remember myself getting all teary eyed during the last episodes. But now I'm starting to miss all the Mustang/Hawkeye moments because I love those two.

To be honest, it's no Clannad. I personally didn't have teary eyes with this series, but it certainly has some really romantic and sad moments.
plus the action was actually intense because the protagonist is bad-ass. And not in a: you're to strong let's add another super saiyan level/ demon fox chakra / hollow mask kind of way.
He simply evolves as a player meaning he gets better at the game. I like that, it doesn't feel cheap.

Now I am suddenly more intriguied now that I know there is romance and action. And personally, I never really cried watching Clannad. Maybe it's because the female characters seem a little cookie cutter like. When it comes to Clannad I cared more about Tomoya and Nagisa's parents.

Can you tell me about this one? Even though I already have a lot of anime I'm already watching at the moment I am always interested to try new ones.

It's a Mecha where humans are forced to live underground while Beastmen live above. It's a tale about two boys that break free from the underground and lead the rebellion of Humans against Beastmen. It's a fantastic anime that inspires the mainly soul. You'll find yourself growing a beard when you finish it. It's that manly!

What got me into it was Yoko the red-headed girl with the sniper rifle. At first I thought it was about Yoko as an intergalactic bounty hunter, but Gurren Lagann turned out to be so much more which I'm quite happy about.

Also, I find that SAO ISN'T very deserving of its praise. The first arc which IS Sword Art Online is a lot more intriguing than it's second of Alfheim Online. But the anime itself is ruined for me due to Kirito's personality. He's too aloof for me to like, he gets every single chick he encounters, and he's too overpowered compared to everyone else. His emotional struggles don't help him grow as a character and, to me, is an example of a main character that can make me really dislike an anime. He's kinda like Shinji from Eva in the sense where he doesn't really grow as a character. Except I actually like Shinji.

And another thing that bothered me was the whole "imouto love" shenanigans they got on. I finished reading ALO just before the anime finished and I felt like it wasn't even worth it to finish watching it due to its rather generic resolution. I'll probably read where I left off in the next book to see where it goes next, but that's a different topic.

Oh my! I'm afaid I'm not a huge fan of mecha, two animes I like that have mecha in them are Code Geass and Kannazuki no Miko but Mecha doesn't really interest me. But I am kind of interested in Gundam Age.

Didn't think so. Mechas are genres usually shied away from for some reason. You'll just be missing out on AWESOME MANLY FUN-TIME!

When I was a little girl I used to love shounen anime and shoujo anime didn't interest me, but I was afraid to watch all the shounen anime on Toonami because where I lived I would be judged based on what I like to watch on tv.

Now I'm 18 and I love shoujo anime and shounen anime doesn't interest me that much. (Cliches.)

Now the only shounens that interest me currently are Detective Conan and the original Naruto series. And I think Angel Beats has been classified as a shounen.

I'll agree that the first arc is way better than the second one. He's very OP in the first arc, but that gets toned down in the second arc. If you think that's a problem than that would be a positive point for you no?
But I personally like that he was overpowered. This way he owns the noobs that try to cross him (like that bunch of 10 people at the end of that flower garden dungeon) and he can almost kill bosses alone in epic ways. That is just my personal taste though.
About the emotional struggles... I'm not to sure about that. I did think his character progressed emotionally within the first arc. He didn't do the whole 180 from indisicive brat to rock steady hero thing, but he made progress. Don't forget, it took 3 games for Phoenix to become a confident lawyer. I also like to see a stronger resolve in Kirito and maybe in due time it will.
It is true that about every female in the series fall in love with him. In compensation though
Spoiler:
He sticks with one girl and goes all the way for her, which I think is very admirable

I didn't care for the whole sister thing either and that's one of the reasons why the second arc is worse than the first.
Finally, I'm not that active in the anime community so I'm not sure about how much praise this series gets. I heard some good things left and right and that's why I checked it out. This series is not in my top 10 either, but I did find it very enjoyable to watch and this anime is one of the best new anime's out there IMHO. (Also I don't watch a lot of new anime, I tend to watch one at a time and follow my 'main' anime's such as Gintama)

Yeah Kirito's abilities got toned down in ALO, but it was still a horrible arc to begin with. They completely threw away with the "life in jeopardy" concept and used the "Save your GF from getting raped" plot-point. One day I'll continue reading the light novel series since the book I'm on actually deals with an MMO based on guns. The antagonist is a player that possesses a gun that can kill a character in-game in real life. It sounds a whole lot better than ALO.

SAO isn't the worst anime ever and I've seen some bad ones, but it's popularity is so inflated that it just irks me to see so many people praising it when there are a lot of problems in its writing. Try comparing SAO to other over-hyped fan-favorites such as Code Geass, Haruhi, Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist. It's NOWHERE near the level of quality as the others. Personal opinion of course.

I see. That makes some sense, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
On that matter can you (or anyone else) tell me whats the deal with Haruhi? She pops up everywhere on the internet and is praised so much, but for what? I saw the show and didn't really impress me.I'm not saying it was bad or anything but I don't see why people like it to much.
In my Humble opinion: Haruhi < SAO < CG , DN , FMA and my other personal favourites.

I saw half of the first episode of Haruhi and quit. I prefer Lucky Star.

Now I have watched SAO up to episode 6 now, and I adore it, but I have to say that the anime is a but cliche, I can make a list of stories where there's a virtual reality game where the players get trapped and either everyone works together or it's every man for himself to defeat the final boss and get freedom. And the anime was also sort of predictable at some points. But the cliche is handled well in this anime and the battle scenes are awesome.

Spoiler: Thoughts on SAO so far
I finished the episode where Liz and Kirito work together, I felt so bad for Liz. To be honest, I don't like Asuna so far, at first she struck me as a generic main female character and even when she became more fleshed out I still felt "meh" about her. And I wish they wouldn't wave Kirito and Asuna's relationship in my face because I find it uniteresting. I prefer Kirito relationships with the other female characters he partner up with. And I was really upset when Sachi died because I saw part of myself in her. (If you guys haven't noticed I usually prefer implied pairings because they keep me interested, hence me being a Phoenix/Maya fan.

Haruhi is a little harder to understand the praise behind it, but to me it's mainly due to the whole slice-of-life aspects combined with the supernatural concept of "Lord Haruhi controlling everything". Oh and time travel, can't forget about time travel. Also, the Haruhi movie was amazing. Kyon's monologues were simply fantastically well-delivered. It's a slice-of-life that really makes you think about stuff. I really enjoyed it.

Really now? O_O

Usually slice of life animes are all humor and smiles, which could be just as bad as those annoying teenager sitcoms that potray highschool life poorly.

It kind of makes me want to give Haruhi another try...I even want to try K-ON even though I was first turned off by the anime because of the art style.
