I know about the leather armor and especially about armor generally having 'skirts' that give additional defense to the groin and legs, alongside other clothes. I was merely making fun of it.

To be honest, if Manfred von Karma is said with a decent, german accent, the name itself can sound very threatening, yes. Especially if you go after his Japanese name Gou, amongst meanings having to do with hell.

Yep. Totally New. And totally awesome, since I've been wanting this in AA for years. I sometimes accidently skip dialogue and then I'm stuck if it has some important info in it.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Simon Blackquill? When I saw that name, it just reminded me of a detective in a haunted house. I think the name would be better for a detective in the 1900s. It still kinda fits him though. The name is kinda dark. :yogi:

The log was pointed out by several people, but I don't think it made it into a news post. It's a nice feature to have though, especially in a visual novel. Especially when I accidentally click through things.

Too bad they didn't think about adding it sooner. That's a very common VN feature.

With the Conversation Log, the new engine, the models, the voices, the cutscenes... Am I the only one who now desperately wants a remake of the first four games? I mean, it can wait until, say, the series' 15th Anniversary, but it definitely should happen.

I wouldn't be too keen on the new engine being used in place of the sprites, as I feel they are a big part of the atmosphere of the original games, but I could see a big "Ace Attorney Collection" being released which used the original sprites and backgrounds but added the conversation log, memo feature, and maybe a new case or two like Rise from the Ashes.

Rise from the Ashes was a terribly superfluoues case that took too long

I'd be torn between wanting a re-done version of the previous games or wanting them to not do it.
We have to remember, technically, the DS games were already a somewhat redone version of the GBA games - not AJ, of course - so redoing those would be like re-redoing them. But if they do bring us 3DS (or other handheld/console) versions of the games, I would wish that they at least updated the GS1 and GS2 characters to the standard of GS3 or GS4. The further I went in the game, the worst it looked to me to see the pixely GS1 sprites right next to the smoother GS4 sprites. It was very distracting.

Like, a re-remake of GS1-3? Then again, they basically ported the GBA versions into the DS. But yes, surprising that they hadn't installed a log and memo before. On the GBA, it's understandable that they didn't have enough room in the cartridge, but by the DS standard, they could have put it in.

But if they somehow manage to take DS games and make them compatible for the 3DS, I will be amazed.

But GS3 was a GBA port too. GS4 was the first to hit the DS screens.

I think she might have meant the visual style. If I remember correctly, the character designer for the first game was different which explains the strange-compared-to-the-rest-of-the-series' style of the characters. I didn't notice it too much on the original DS versions, but it is noticeable on the iOS HD port.

Exactly what I meant.
The sprites from GS3 are smooth and look good enough, even if they aren't as smooth as the GS4 ones. But 1-5 and 4-4 really showed the difference and that's just something that bothered me in the game. It eventually started to distract me.
Not so much in GS2 and GS3, but GS4 and 1-5 were definitely like that.

It takes very little memory to store pointers to the last few messages. And it's not memory in the cart, but ram that is provided by the console. And it's not like the naive approach of just storing the text directly in memory is very memory consuming either.

I played Apollo Justice first and was really excited to play as Phoenix during that one part of 4-4, but that turned to shock for a little while after I saw Phoenix's courtroom sprite. The design and pixelation made it look like his nose was a beak. It took some time getting used to, to say the least.

They said "Fall 2013" if I remember correctly.

A precise release date would be nice, but I think it's too far out for that.

They just said autumn 2013, which is officially anywhere from late September to late December. And if you factor in the terms in a marketing sense (where autumn could be taken as August/September since November/December is sometimes called "Holiday" season (As in "Holiday 2013") and it means that this game could come out anytime from august to december. I hope they give a specific date (or at least "early/late [INSERT MONTH HERE] 2013).

I'm hoping so. Svenn was saying something about more details soon and for an explanation that showed there was a "method to their madness" or something. So hopefully that's E3.

I'm hoping for a new trailer and maybe some actual English promotional material. So far we've gotten one English trailer to Japan's three or more and we don't even have an official website to my knowledge. It's no wonder Capcom doesn't like Ace Attorney's American sales figures if they won't even promote the game for us.

I still have yet to see an English-language print ad for an Ace Attorney game. It's been 8 years since original Nick came out. Ace Attorney has likely been considered an also-ran since day one, even though original Nick had several reprints. You'd think that would have clued Capcom into the demand for this series, but... :yogi:

I have never seen any marketing of any kind relating to AA. Nothing in print, on TV, or on the web (not including things I see here on C-R, like the recent english trailer which I haven't seen anywhere else.) The only things I've seen relating to AA have been magazine previews and reviews which tend to be small and "skippable". I once saw a little blurb in Game Informer Magazine about AAI (literally a paragraph) and that's it. Real Marketing is non-existent. It's too bad too because I think many people would be interested in the series if there was more to catch people's attention. I didn't know anything about AA but I read the Nintendo Power article about Apollo Justice and bought it the next day. If they played up the 3D investigations and the animations I think it would catch peoples' attention.

I knew exactly nothing about Ace Attorney until the announcement of the crossover with Layton. That's only because of how excited people were getting, I hadn't played Prof. Layton either. I grabbed the first AA on a whim just to see what the hubbub was about.

I should not have been able to go so long without knowing about this series and it's all Capcom's fault for not even trying.

And it's not like they need to do a huge mainstream marketing campaign. There are many ways Capcom could market specifically to audiences who might be into AA (Anime/Manga fans, fans of Legal dramas, Players of old-school point-and-click adventure games)

Not to mention their trailers are always behind-the-times in terms of how to edit a good game trailer. The newest GS5 trailer (the Nintendo Direct one) is the first trailer that really advertised all the aspects of the game in an appealing way. All of the other ones (at least the US ones) have been just random shots of the characters with some quotes over them, which is cool but is not going to win over anyone who doesn't know said characters already.

I have to say, the Japanese Gyakuten 4 voiced trailer was pretty cool, but kinda bad when it was localised, as it was just the orchestrated track playing, no voices and quotes running across the screen.

I mean, marketing, first things that come to mind are the Nintendo 3DS eShop and the Wii U eShop, slap trailers on there and a demo on the 3ds one and bam, first step completed. But i mean E3 will probably be the biggest advertisement so far, also that Nintendo Direct may have got some Monster Hunter fans interested, and then for the west, Nintendo Direct trailer, Q&A with producers (Iwata Asks) and Bob's your uncle.

Black. Quill, as in feather of a bird. Or Quill, as in the pen you use made from the feather of a bird.

And I'm not saying Simon is a bad name.
I'm just saying it's completely unfitting for a prosecutor who is serving a murder sentence and looks the way he does. It's unintimidating, it's not scary, it doesn't strike any sense of foreboding or fear into me. Just makes me want to laugh at him. I'm probably gonna remain with the Japanese names in this game.

I have to agree, just slap the existing stuff everywhere as phase 1. Then they can take a directed advertisement during the commercials of the latest crime drama on tv. Oh, and send a couple free review copies to magazines.

One possibility I have thought regarding the the name Simon could be that the person who came up with the name could have been thinking of Simon Cowell, a person that I am sure that several aspiring singer likely found to be intimidating.

Hehe, that could be a possibility! Simon Cowell is seen as intimidating (Even though he said so himself that he's paid to be XD)

In my opinion, Simon (at first) didn't fit him at all, but I'm getting used to calling him that. I'm still slipping and always calling Athena "Kokone" XD. (Off topic: Maybe I should make some DD smileys for this place? Image)

Who? ......................................................................Oh right, that guy.
He's intimidating? Seems more like the standard jerk that you find in places.
You know, the guy you just wanna punch in the face cause he steps over the line of "It's okay to be a Jerk" and gets into the territory of "Only way to redeem this is to shove my fist up your ass"

My two cents on the name:

Simon of Cyrene was ordered to help carry the cross of Jesus. We know that Yugami has been convicted for murder, but as some people have speculated, he might be innocent. If he is covering for someone else and allowed himself to be convicted...

Freaking biblical names. Who is gonna know that unless they actually took the time to read some of the bible? I didn't read it and I don't want to. Especially hate it when games have those freaking names in them.... at least they didn't call Athena "Charity" or "Faith"...

Simon Cowell used to be seen as intimidating the early days of Pop Idol a long while back - I think people still want to impress him but these days most see him as a prize knob who you want to punch in the face (as you say) rather than scary.

So I'm assuming we'll see DD in the Nintendo Direct Event on Tuesday, and we have the Q&A with Eshiro on Wednesday. Are there any other Ace Attorney-related things happening at e3? I'm going to be paying attention a lot this year but I don't want to miss any AA coverage that I might not know about.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Also, speaking of Simon... I can't be the only one who thought about Simon's Cat, right?

I wouldn't call DD a lock for the Direct by any means, for what it's worth - it's only an hour, and Nintendo's got quite a few of their own games to get through.

Other than that, bar a surprise PLvsAA announcement, I think AA'll be limited to the Q&A with Eshiro and whatever news sites visit Capcom's booth to cover it.
Hi! I've largely stepped back from C-R due to life stuff. Please contact one of the other staff members for help!

Didn't think about that. I guess I'll wake up early for it anyway since I'm interested in a couple of other games.

Hopefully we'll get a release date in the next couple of days!
