JP Dual Destinies devblog update: game systems

First off, the investigation controls have been updated, so that you can now move to any other location regardless of where you are. (When gameplay designer Daigo asked if that wouldn't make it hard to figure out where to go to trigger an event, Yamazaki told him it wasn't his job to worry about that, haha.)
Second, as you progress through a case, you'll unlock the ability to jump to various parts of the story without starting the episode from the very beginning. For example, this (partial) list for case one lets you jump to the start of the day, opening statements, and Tonate's first testimony, and will fill up with additional points you can jump to.
They also noted that for the Thought Route system, they designed it so that making a mistake doesn't give the same generic "I screwed up" message every time, but changes depending on the choices you make. Sounds like a nice touch!

Yes! Finally they put this in. This is really useful for replaying cases.

In all honesty, I would have been fine playing the game WITHOUT any of these features but including them only makes the game better IMO. The game is only about half a month away, and now I'm getting more and more excited.

While common sense would say they should announce a release date soon, Capcom isn't very good at announcing release dates in advance. I remember when I was waiting for the AA e3 stream to start, they were doing a segment on Ducktales Remastered, something scheduled to come out "Summer 2013". I just checked the Wikipedia page, and there is still no confirmed release date, even though we are no in Summer 2013. So I wouldn't hold my breath for Capcom to announce a release date soon, even though I think it would make much more sense to announce one early - at least give us an exact month!
A delay is possible if Capcom decides to create a physical copy. My estimate would be it would delay the game to Jan/Feb 2014. Sven said he'd let us know "in the next couple weeks" and it's been a little over two weeks since then, so hopefully we'll be hearing about if physical is happening or not soon.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Svenn stated that release date and price would be affected by the switch to Physical, so we know it might be a factor if it really does happen. I can't imagine they would go to all the trouble of a physical release and then sabotage themselves by releasing the digital version early; No doubt many who would prefer a physical but are just fine with digital will be tempted to get the earlier digital version. I think the digital version will definitely be released on the same day that the physical copy will, if that actually happens.
My guess for early 2014 is based on how long earlier games have taken to localize. I wouldn't be so sure that Capcom can create the cartridge version, run it through test, create packaging, etc. in a month or less. And if I'm not mistaken we've only seen the demos (which are seperate entities from the game itself) and screenshots of the first two cases, so for all we know they might not have completed them yet.
I'm not trying to be all negative here, just stating the reasons I think a physical release would come early next year. I wish we'd hear something from Sven so we could have a better grasp of when this game was coming out.

Considering digital generally sells for the same price as a new retail copy (at least, in my experience, it has)? Allowing an earlier digital release may actually be a more profitable option. I would assume digital copies are less expensive to distribute than physical, as Capcom would not have to pay for cartridge materials, packaging, etc., so letting people who would have bought a physical copy buy a digital copy for the same price in their eagerness would get them more cash for their work. Not so pretty for the retailers, but... *shrug*. Then, if people still insist on having a physical copy, they just might go and get it anyway (I know I will).
I agree that it will probably take until early 2014 to get the physical copies out; I seem to recall Sven saying something about needing to redo the code to make the carts? If it's bad enough to push back the date at all, it's probably going to be by quite a bit, as we also need to account for the time it takes to get the materials to put the new code on together, as well. The translation itself shouldn't take too long, unless they run out of ideas for the plentiful cultural tidbits that don't translate well; that would be why the difference between Japan's release date and NA's digital release date is, what, two to four months? Assuming we've got the latest possible fall date there for digital, the physical carts would probably be out... I'm guessing February. Possibly March. I am SO hoping I'm overestimating, here.
And demos and screenshots don't actually take that long to set up, really... At least from what I've taken out of my Game Design class, it's not; there, a demo was basically a working single-leveled prototype. Reality's probably more complicated on that end xD

Actually that quote is a lot less specific than I remembered it being, so I can't say for sure anymore but I would assume that "timing would be at a disadvantage" could only mean "the release date will be delayed".
I'm ok waiting an extra 2-4 months for a physical copy but longer than that would make me start to prefer the digital version.

I've made digital purchases on my 3DS XL and have yet to receive any issues with the system set up. Never really understood everyone's desire for an account system when they already have Club Nintendo, and when an account system like Steam goes against the company's sales practices. Those that whine about an account system are whining because they want the same luxuries seen on Steam - the ability to make a single purchase and let multiple people play from that single purchase... it was never about security, but rather due to the system being old-fashioned.

Unfortunately that is a problem, but Nintendo has provided solutions. Linking your 3DS to Club Nintendo will maintain a list of all the games you downloaded. Also in the last 3DS update they added the ability to back up your save data. If your 3DS is broken or stolen, then before/after purchasing a new console you can contact Nintendo and they'll refund you all of the purchases - they won't re-download the games for you, they'll just add whatever amount was lost to your account as soon as you register your newest 3DS. Police statements are necessary if your 3DS was stolen. Then using the back-up feature you should be able to bring back all of the data. The only games I've heard that don't support the back up feature are Animal Crossing and MH3, but that's because it's easy to take advantage of the back-up feature to have more than one file on games that aren't designed to have multiple files.
I know it's inconvenient, but at the end of the day if your 3DS is stolen or broken, there's a good chance it's not Nintendo's fault, and they have no obligation to restore your purchases. They have done it in the past though, and their customer service is phenomenal from what I experienced.

This is true.
A couple weeks ago I joined Club Nintendo in an attempt to create a "list" of downloaded games in case something happened. I linked my system but my previously downloaded games weren't showing up, so I called Nintendo Customer Service about it. There are two accounts that revolve around your purchases: the optional Club Nintendo account which rewards you for purchases, and your eShop account, which is tied to your system and isn't one you have to sign up for; as far as I know the minute you get on the internet your eShop account is active. When you join Club Nintendo your previously-download games will not appear on your product list but your eShop account has a list of every game you've downloaded. The guy was able to read back to me a list of games I downloaded long before I activated my Club Nintendo account.
So in conclusion, Nintendo has a list of everything you've downloaded whether you are on Club Nintendo or not. When you download DD they will have a record that a system with that serial number downloaded it. Now, how that will factor into theft I'm not sure (if you don't have the original system they probably can't just believe that the system is yours and give you your games back) but in the case of it breaking beyond the ability to do a system transfer I think you should be good, as they have a record of everything you bought.
My recommendation is to join Club Nintendo and/or register your system if possible (that might help with the theft issue) but if you can't I wouldn't worry. As long as no one steals your 3DS you shouldn't ever have a problem. Especially since peer pressure gurantees Nintendo will have an account system eventually (probably in the next 2-5 years).

When you download DD they will have a record that a system with that serial number downloaded it. Now, how that will factor into theft I'm not sure (if you don't have the original system they probably can't just believe that the system is yours and give you your games back) but in the case of it breaking beyond the ability to do a system transfer I think you should be good, as they have a record of everything you bought.
My recommendation is to join Club Nintendo and/or register your system if possible (that might help with the theft issue) but if you can't I wouldn't worry. As long as no one steals your 3DS you shouldn't ever have a problem. Especially since peer pressure gurantees Nintendo will have an account system eventually (probably in the next 2-5 years).
For thefts, you'll need a police statement. I've read a bunch of stories about folks getting refunds added to their eshop accounts after contacting Nintendo with a police statement. Unfortunately you do lose all your data, but with the money you can buy back your games (or use the money on something else if you hated some of the games you owned).
