Calling all Ace Artists! Now that we've all had a few weeks to digest Dual Destinies, Court Records woud like to invite you all to keep the spirit going with our second-ever Sprite Cup! For those of you unfamiliar with the Sprite Cup, you can see the the entries to our '08-'09 contest here. So onto the big questions!

What the heck's a Sprite Cup?

Ace Attorney might have made the leap into the world of 3D with its latest entries, but spriting and editing has long been a staple of AA fanworks. The Sprite Cup is an open contest to invite people to show off their AA-style spriting skills and win some nice swag in the process!

Okay, sounds good. What am I supposed to enter?

Big, beautiful, Ace Attorney-style sprites! They can be defense, prosecution, judge, witness, AAI-style... whatever goes. It can be just a single pose, a whole sheet, animations - whatever works best for you. Feel free to give your character a name or bio as well for flavor, but judging will be carried out on the sprite, not its backstory.

Are there any limits?

Submissions should be a full sprite (so not an AAI mini-sprite or a profile picture, though you can of course include those as bonuses). Very minor edits of existing characters like plain recolors or simple changes won't be considered. (See this image for some examples.) Feel free to use official sprites for parts, though - it's the spriting way!

Also, please enter a newly created sprite for the contest, not a previous work.

Does the sprite have to be of an original character?

Nope! Feel free to come up with new outfits or roles for existing characters, or in the case of Dual Destinies characters, give them that 2D shakedown they never had.

What should a good entry have?

Three things: Creativity, Composition, and Style. Is the character's design interesting (or, in the case of the DD characters, is there a noticeable difference between the 2D sprite and the existing model?) Does the sprite look good (crisp lines, accurate anatomy)? And maybe most important of all, does the sprite fit the AA style? (Could you picture it in-game, and in the case of OCs, does the character look like someone who could be in the AA universe?)

How will entries be judged?

After a first round of closed judging by... well, the judges (myself, Percei, Ping', and DeMatador), the finalists will be posted for public voting. To help keep voting objective, finalists will be posted without their creators' names (though of course we can't stop you from promoting your entry on your own blog or in forum sigs or what have you.)

Enough with the rules, what're the prizes?

I'm glad you asked! Because this contest is celebrating Dual Destinies, we're handing out prizes from the Japan-only Limited Edition:

First place will receive the GS5 Phoenix statue! These aren't available anywhere outside of the LE, as far as I know, so it's quite the collector's item.
Second place will receive the GS5 3DS carrying case!
Third place will receive the set of GS5 stickers!

Can I still enter if I'm outside of the U.S.?

Absolutely. Shipping your prize will take a bit longer, of course, but it'll get there somehow!

How should I enter?

E-mail your entry to courtrecord@gmail.com (no, that's not a typo - no 's' on the end of courtrecord) with the phrase "Sprite Cup Entry" somewhere in the subject line.

How long do I have to enter?

We'll be accepting entries until January 15th, 2014 (note the recent extension!). Judge-only judging will take place in the week after, and public voting on the finalists will open once that's done. After the winners are announced, we'll make all the entries with their creators' names available for public viewing on our site.

What happened to the OC contest?

Well, there's another Ace Attorney game on the horizon, guest starring a certain gentleman professor. Check back in a few months and you might just find a more magical contest waiting...

Anyway, that's the long and the short of it, folks. Go on and show Capcom that, even if they do make jaw-droppingly beautiful 3D models, 2D will always live on in the heart of Ace Attorney!

Should be a fun contest!

I know this is off-topic, but whatever happened to the (2nd) GS5 Pick Your Prosecutor contest? Was a winner ever found?
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Aww man the grand prize is excellent! Wish I had any kind of artistic talent XP

Still hopefully there'll be some budding young spriters about, I imagine if Ceres was still around he'd stomp the competition though. :hobolaugh:

I've become quite rusty, but I'm really excited for this. I might enter.

December 31st seems like too little time to me though.

Hence why that date is marked as being "pulled out of a hat" - this is my first time running one of these contests, so I'm not certain how long a time frame is necessary. If there's pushback from the community I'll be happy to extend it.

Out of curiosity, do the sprites have to be in the art style of the DS/GBA games? I'm considering submitting the sprites from my ace attorney film, which has a different art style (look at my signature)

I'm pretty sure vector graphics don't count as sprites.

For the purposes of the contest, we prefer all sprites to be in the style of the DS games, we're putting our spriters to the test here to put out some really awesome work, so we're going to be judging them against the game sprites themselves in a number of categories.

If you think that might not be for you, the OC Contest (which should be swinging around Summer of next year--thereabouts) has less stringent guidelines on style of sprites and artwork!

This might be a stupid question: Should I send animated sprites (E.G: Talking, Blinking, etc.) or a picture of an edited sprite?

Ahh, I haven't been around the forum for a while now, but I absolutely have to participate in this!

Question about the rules. I asked this at the court records tumblr too, but just to confirm again, can you sprite characters from other series? Like, for instance, Lynne from Ghost Trick. Or is it strictly AA characters and OCs?

Sorry for the slow response on this. Sure, you can make non-AA characters and give them the AA makeover.

Will have to try my hand at this contest. It's been a long time I did anything spriting-related, but I'm sure it'll turn out decent at least.

But I have a quick question, what kind of program should I use (right now, I'm using MS Paint or GIMP)?

well personally I use paint myself (and gimp for animation) but the best thing to do is try the programs out and get familiar with the tools as no matter which program you choose its likely you'll still need time to improve. :P

I use a mix of sai and GIMP, though my method more involves drawing the whole sprite from scratch... for editing, I'd recommend using gimp. It also comes with animation features so you don't have to use a different program to animate your sprite when it's done.

As long as you're not stealing mine.:redd:

In regards to software, I've personally grown accustomed to using Paint.NET because, like MS Paint, it does pixel-perfect edits, but it also has layers and unlimited Undo.

:beef: How did you know!?

In all seriousness though, My entry's almost finished and I'll enter it in! (I just want to check and make some final touches first!)

On programs, I used Photoshop free trial (I need to find a permanent program soon!) to make mine, you can animate, and modify colour when exporting files as an animated .gif

I got another question, this time about entry requirements. If I recently made sprites (like, this week) but posted them on the forum, would it still be okay to enter them into the contest provided that I take them down and hide them till after the contest is over...?

You can enter any sprites you like, as long as they haven't been entered in a CR contest before. We of course encourage everyone to create entries specifically for the contest to stretch their creativity, but entering a sprite you'd already started or have made before is in no way against the rules!

If it were, how on earth would we regulate it!?

But yes, you don't have to take them off your sprite page, if you don't want to.

Exactly this. There is no requirement to the number of poses your sprite must have, it can be a single static image, or an entire animated poseset, your choice.
