Anyway, I couldn't find a thread here that focused on visual novels in general. I have no idea how popular those are in general, but I doubt I'm the only one who sometimes reads one.
I'm currently reading one of the more popular visual novels called Fate/stay night, and I must admit I can't understand just why it's so popular. I mean, sure, the premise is interesting and it has its moments and the soundtrack is fantastic, but overall it's not anything extraordinary. There's so much exposition, power levels make no sense and there's an unhealthy amount of plot armor/deus ex machina present in every battle (it reminds me of Naruto, and that's never a good thing). The exposition in particular is bad simply because it's useless; you learn the many rules of the Holy Grail War only to quickly realize that they're all pretty much broken/ignored/false, and people gladly hold lengthy speeches about magic that is never used.
The support cast is fairly likeable, especially the queen of all tsunderes Rin Tohsaka, but Shirou Emiya, the protagonist, is so dull it makes me head hurt. I appreciate the fact that he's at least good-natured and can cook, which is more than can be said about some other visual novel protagonists (*cough Kyosuke Azai *cough*), but he's just uninteresting. He knows nothing about anything, which people take as an invitation to hold even more long speeches, he seriously blushes just hearing an attractive woman breathe, and he never really says anything of interest.

I've read/played several others as well, like G-Senjou no Maou and Virtue's Last Reward to name a few. I also managed to completely misunderstand what kind of game Ever 17 was, mistaking it for a dating sim with various different routes. As a result, I looked up everything on Tv tropes and quickly realized how wrong I was.
What about you? And if someone can tell me what's so great about Fate/stay night, I'd be thrilled. I can with some certainty say that it's not famous for its gorgeous school uniforms.

Definitely the VN that scared me and actually has deeper stuff in it that you'd think on first glance.

I absolutely love the Chunsoft sound novels: Kamaitachi no Yoru being revolutionary as a detective game and novel game, Machi ~Unmei no Kousaten and 428 ~ Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de have excellent stories and writing.
Strangely enough though, I never got into 999, even though that's probably the best known outside of Japan.

Nukige, a sub genre of eroge, are games that have the highest amount of sexual content. A good example you ask?

Also, I played the ONE Japanese dating sims of my liking that was brought over to the US--the PSP game Sweet Fuse.
Other than that, a few, I believe, but I can't recall the titles.
There's also the wealth of Ren'py visual novels available...

Any less known games I should look into ? I'll admit I'm looking for a strong and heavy plot first, typically like what Uchikoshi usually writes. I don't mind the fact there is no gameplay and minimalistic graphics in those, but the story really have to be catchy. It sounds like you would enjoy G-Senjou no Maou, my friend. The (main route) story is captivating, the soundtrack is amazing and there'll be plenty of awesome, heartwarming and hilarious moments. However, I do have several problems with it, like how the main characters are all high school students (why is every protagonist in every media ever a high school student? What's so bloody great about high school?), some parts of the (main) plot dragging on for too long and how the protagonist is fairly unlikeable, but that's just my opinion.
I would tell you more, but I'm in the middle of cooking dinner, and I don't really want to spoil anything. Also, I have only read the main story, so I can't tell you anything about the other routes even if I wanted to.

Heaven's Feel is what makes F/SN so amazing. Shirou goes through much a stronger character development in this route, and the fight scenes are even more fun to read through. Rin is best girl, and that's why I love F/SN.

I believe that protagonists are usually high school students because they have the biggest potential to change who they are. Whereas adults tend to always be stuck in their ways. Plus, teenagers are usually the target demographic for anime/games in Japan so having the heroes the same relative age gives them a sense of wish fulfillment. That's how I see it anyway. High school settings have never really bothered me.
And as far as Azai Kyousuke is concerned, you gotta understand where he came from.

I just finished Heaven's Feel, and it was a lot better than Unlimited Blade Works (although seriously, it's hard to find a cooler-sounding title than that) that's for sure. However, I still don't like Shirou, and I still don't see what's so great about the whole game. Heaven's Feel had serious issues with pacing and a habit of overemphasizing certain parts of the story. For instance, did you know Sakura has large breasts? It took a while, but it started sinking in after they told me about 15 times.
...And yes, Rin is amazing. Too bad her route almost made me quit the game.

You're most likely correct, but I still don't see it. Adults can change just as easily in a piece of fiction as well as any other age group. The fact that teenagers are the target demographic is a solid argument, but are the average teenagers' minds somehow not able to relate to anything else? I thought that's what fiction was all about. Not to mention high schoolers rarely actually attend school unless that's where the story takes place.

The way I see it, high school students over there would have to be Westerner's equivalent of "hard-core military brodude". I think you're right about cultural differences, and that's something that can't be truly explained unless you live on both sides of the spectrum.

You and me are a dying breed, old chap
to me a story has to be riveting, and characters have to be original and multi layered, and that's it. I don't want script writers to rub me the right way, by creating average Joe I can relate to but who also turn out to be vigilante/rising drug dealers with a conscience/chosen ones, just for the sake of satisfying my fantasy of escapism. I want plots that kill lovable characters and spare douchebags, I want plots that are completely about fiction. Which is why...Quote:

one of my favourite protagonists of all time is Luke from tales of the abyss. His character development was amazing, while staying consistent from beginning to end. Since you're not the first one to advise me to play it, G senjou na maou it is. Thanks !

Has anyone here read Clannad? It's a popular game and I've been thinking about giving it a try, but I'm a bit turned off by the art style, and the synopses I've read make it sound fairly generic.

I've read a little bit, but I got bored cause common routes take forever and I wasn't super immersed in Clannad at the time. The artstyle didn't bother me that much since I've played much worse.
Higurashi and Umineko's artstyles prior to the restoration patches are cancer to my eyes.
I've read Rewrite and Little Busters, which are both made by the creators of Clannad, and I really enjoyed them. I'll probably get back into it eventually cause I heard the feels will destroy you.
I just recently finished a really good one called Grisaia no Kajitsu. MC's an ex soldier that wants to experience a normal school-life, so he gets transferred to a high school that deals with students that have "problems". I can just hear school-setting lovers just groaning with joy.
Snarkiness aside, it's become a favorite read of mine, and I really want the sequels to be translated already!

Well, I kinda expected a tad more mature atmosphere and characters, but that's what happens when one play something without much prior knowledge
On the bright side, discovering the plot without knowing anything about it more than makes up for it. The pacing is more often than not a bit slow, but when things get tense, the suspense is breathtaking. I'm definitely glad I took your advice !

Read? No; it's about as long as war and peace, and I often get easily distracted when trying to play Visual Novels on my computer. Watched? Yes; the anime adaptation is one of my favorites of all time, because the story describes not only romance and falling in love with a girl, but also life past high school and all the challenges that come with it. It's one of the funniest, saddest and most charming stories I've seen in anime, so I'd reccomend going through either the visual novel or the anime and experiencing it
Now, onto what I've personally read. The answer is... not much
I've played the Ace Attorney series (duh 
), Persona 3 and 4, Cinders (an American visual novel; not the BEST story I've ever played through, but a beautiful and enjoyable work nonetheless), am GOING to play the first Dangan Ronpa and have pre-ordered Steins; Gate for the PC. A fair few, but nothing much in the scope of all that's out there in the world of VN 
Then again, I purposely avoid playing eroge or any games with any sort of nudity, and that pretty much covers a fair few of the VN in existence, so I'm not sure how many other non H games out there that I'd like 
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions?Anything written by Uchikoshi (ever17, never7, remember11, 999, virtue's last reward) or Ryukishi (higurashi, umineko) would be right up your alley (come to think of it, there is some nudity occurrence in higurashi, both explicit and implied, but they're quite tame and few and far between compared to what one would find in most other VN).

I've actually been meaning to buy a play through 999 for some time now! I just keep... well... forgetting
