The way I justify Kanji's glasses is that he actually NEEDED glasses before but either didn't wear them or went with contacts so it would better work with his 'tough guy' look. As for the rest of him... yeah, it threw me for a loop a bit and I'll admit I preferred his old design, but not nearly enough to kill the truest ending for me
But you know what, I think the main problem with the truest ending is that it basically told us 'Hey look! Inaba and everyone in it has changed for the better!' and used changes in character design to illustrate that. That's fine and all, but when they give us no time to actually BE in this 'new' Inaba and get used to the changes in the characters and their designs, we can't really get used to or accept it
I liked that it left us with a positive feeling and showed the town we've grown to know and love is changing for the better and that the future of it's inhabitants are bright, but it felt a little... tacked on, I guess

Really? Giving in to trends? I had assumed that was how he originally looked before he donned on the tough guy act. I figured with him wearing glasses, he changed to contacts so he could look tougher. I saw it more as him becoming the person he once abandoned, not finding a new self.

Well there's no evidence he didn't have good eyesight so I'm not really sure where the argument is going. I guess it's just the costume design he's adopted whenever that happens throws me so much it just seems alien to me like another character.
I don't think the 'tough guy' stuff was an act. Sure it helps disguise his 'unmanly' hobbies but it's still a part of him. He went out and beat up that biker gang for his mother, not because somewhere down the line he thought people would talk about it in legends as a testimony of manliness.

I dunno, maybe this is just because I myself wear glasses but I didn't necessairly see him as intellectual based off of the design.
To me, his desiggn seemed to indicate he was simply more comfortable in his own skin and thus dressed how he actually wanted to dress and look like the person he naturally was, not this 'tough guy' trying to intimidate others. I'll admit I preferred the old design better too -a lot of it having to do with this one throwing me for a loop, I'll admit- but to be fair no matter what design they decided to go with to illustrate the 'real' Kanji, it would've seemed alien to me, so I can live with this one

Like you though, Kanji is my favorite character in the game. I loved his old design and don't really like his new one. I was trying to say why it made sense to me.

Problem I have is it only makes sense if the 'tough guy' act was exactly that, an act. Which takes away from a bit of his character if you ask me. What makes Kanji interesting is he *is* a tough guy, he's got a heart of gold though and he has so much depth and elements you don't normally see in tough guys. I don't think Kanji would 'shrug off' a tough guy look because...yeah he is a tough guy at heart, that's what makes him special.
Plus he went through several outfit changes after he'd 'accepted' himself for what he was and none of them were quite so drastic.

He's such an ambigious character that many people can come up with so many different interpretations on what his character is really about and that's what I find so neat. I think that's what defines such a good character. At least we can agree that at the core of Kanji's character, he's a pretty awesome dude.

No two people usually agree on Kanji; his toughness, intelligence, sexuality and 'true self' in general is up in the air, with some people choosing to interpret him one way while others another. The only thing most people can agree on is that he is indeed awesome guy and a great character, largely because he ISN'T so straightforward and definable Back onto the whole design thing though, a lot of the characters went through some big design changes. I mean Yukiko has some sort of housewife style going on (though rocking it), Naoto now looks more decidedly feminine, Chie has a little more maturity showing in her looks, Rise looks like a movie star, Yosuke looks....different, and Teddie seems like the same old Teddie, just with a different shirt. Kanji's was definitely the most radical, but the whole cast definitely seemed to have changed their looks quite a bit, especially considering it's only been a few months since P4A in the game. I liked Chie, Rise, Naoto, and Yu's stylistic changes well enough, everyone else's though was just sort of... meh

It comes off as her being more open about the part of her that loves attention. I also love what they did with Yukiko; a simple change to her wardrobe and hairstyle and she practically looks three years older to me. I feel it shows how much she's grown as a person. Well put. I didn't take it into consideration at first, but you raise a very good point; a few years ago, I saw a friend of mine from high school for the first time since she and I graduated back in 2007. She looked different from the way I remembered her, but the conversation we had that day was pretty much all it took to show me that she was still largely the same person on the inside. The same held true for another friend I saw recently whom I hadn't seen in a while. Same guy on the inside, even if he had a little less hair on the outside.

I can understand your view on Yukiko; her design really shows how she's now embraces her heritage and responsibilities at the inn instead of running from them, and is appropriate. My reason for not liking it is simply because I prefer her old design, but I must agree that it's more then appropriate for her character

Agreed also; I find that people don't often change that easy personality wise, and if they do it's an EXTREMELY gradual process. Of course there are exceptions to this, events that radically alter people's mentality -marriage, death, divorce, change in religion, etc- but on the whole, I've noticed the people I've grown up with are still largely the same people I've always known. Physically they've changed, but all in all, they're still true to who they were.
I'm sure that would also apply to the P4 cast, but I hope they don't continue milking the franchise THAT long

As for him maybe requiring glasses beforehand, I don't know. Glasses can work for a tough guy thing, but he could've gone for sunglasses that are also his eyesight strength - they exist, I've seen advertisements for them. Besides, his TV World glasses were sunglasses, anyway, so we can say it would work.
But I think my bigger beef is with Naoto's changed appearance. I don't feel comfortable going the Lovers Route with her, because I treat her like the ultimate chickified girl. Nothing against helping a girl, but in order to fully start the Lovers Route, I have to protect her. And even on later events, if I want to see her act as a girl, I have to tell her to use Watashi/talk in a higher voice and put on women's clothes... when she clearly feels very uncomfortable in them.
And the Golden Ending just makes her start growing her hair out and wear a blouse that proves that she has gazongas. (Why does the tomboy girl who does not want to be seen as a girl often have the biggest boobs in the bunch?) It just feels like the game is forcing me to go "Hubbahubba!" at her. And like Kanji, if this is her trying to fit into society as a woman, it's incredibly sad. She seemed fine and rather happy to solve cases as herself before, why the sudden need to be all "I am woman, hear me roar"?

Personally speaking, I don't think it's going to match up to the quality of Persona 3 and 4 and the chibi style they used is kind of... meh
however, I think it'll still probably be a fun game in its own right and a good crossover, so I definitely won't be missing this Atlus hasn't brought us a bad game yet (to the best of my knowledge) so I have confidence that this is going to be a good game

Weirdly enough I nerver saw Naoto as a tomboy but more like the kind of women who doesn't want to be associate with women because of the image it brings. At the end I consider that she realise that whatever her sex is, she's still the same and doesn't make her less competent as a detective nor that she should become well... a Yukiko (don't get me wrong I like her but she is so the image of the "perfect women" even Yosuke agree in P4A).
Also, for me Kanji made an act about the tough guy, because guys are supposed to be tough and blah. But enough said!
Yes they are milking the serie but, it's their anniversary and since Square BOUGHT Atlus, I'm sure they want their investment back and quick. Also I want to see the story of P4AU and play with both P3 MC and P4 one in the same team.

Well Yukiko is the image of a Yamato Nadeshiko. Very Japanese, dark hair, fair skin, very demure and polite, but with a strong, iron will when things that she protects or cares about - liker her family and/or home - so she is actually a pretty good version of it.
Most people, when they hear Yamato Nadeshiko, they just think the first part, but never actually see the second part. And I personally have nothing against Yukiko... I just... think the reason for her shadow and dilemma of her social link was kind of... eh, not very... good.

Cat: Well Yukiko's shadow can reflect on how social/ family pressure can affect one's mind. I can say it's another version of the fortune social link in P3, where the guy absolutly wanted to be another thing than doctor, but in the end he realise that what he actually wanted was the CHOICE of being a doctor and not being forced by anyone because that what they told him that's what he should do. I know you can't relate to this, and me neither, but I knew some people who's kind of problem drove them near crazyness. Feeling that you let your loved one down is a terrible feeling.
Also, as far as I know Naoto's manga is not canon, but it's not a doujin either. Also there's an male android like Aigis involved.

Letter of the law ≠ spirit of the law. If I had that on my browser when I was on the job, I wouldn't be surprised if I got in trouble over it even if it's technically not showing anything naughty.

I think though that even during downtime it shouldn't be viewed unless of course your outside during a break period. I don't understand why people bother taking the risk during their work hours.
