Hi everyone! I've never really gotten into any anime, (not counting Ghibli films and things like the Animatrix, which tied into something else) although I'm a huge movie and TV guy. However, this semester I decided to take a Japanese class in college, and I'm really enjoying it. I know a lot of people recommend watching anime in order to listen to the language, so I thought I'd give it a try. But since I don't know much about it, I'm having a hard time finding things I'll enjoy. So I thought I'd ask you guys what some of your favorites are and if you had any recommendations.

For reference, I'll list my non-animated TV and film viewing habits. I love mysteries, crime dramas, and science-fiction. Some of my favorite television shows are Lost, The X-Files, the original Law & Order, Star Trek, House, Magnum PI, etc. Comedy-wise, I like shows like Frasier, Seinfeld, Arrested Development, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Fawlty Towers, etc. Same in general prefences goes for movies; some of my favorites include the Star Wars films, Rain Man, The Da Vinci Code, The Matrix Trilogy, etc. Basically I like a little of everything as long as it either has a good plot, great characters, or preferably both. I'm not really into fantasy that much though (although I do like the Lord of the Rings Trilogy).

In general, the things that turn me off of many movies and shows is either excessive, cruel, or brutal violence, or unnecessary nudity or sex in a film. Violence bothers me much more, as many films like Tarantino's are just too violent for me to enjoy. It usually has to do with the "brutality" of the violence. Films like the Matrix are super violent, but everything is stylized and there's relatively little blood/gore so it doesn't bother me. If the sex and nudity has a reason for being in the story, then that's no problem, but I"m not big on "fanservice" or sexuality used just to get people watching. So for instance, I've given up on a lot of HBO shows because it seems like they sometimes make them as violent and sexual as possible just because its on HBO.

My sister is a big anime/manga fan, so I've had some exposure to a couple of them through her (attack on Titan, Hetalia, Fairy Tale), though nothing really kept my interest. I did recently start watching the "Ghost in the Shell: Arise" anime, which I'm enjoying, although the plot itself seems a little thin. I've heard the "Stand Alone Complex" series has a deeper story. I also know there's a ghost in the shell movie but I haven't seen it. I've also been recommended Full Metal Alchemist and Stein's Gate so I'll probably try those soon as well.

So it seems like in this case I get more interested in drama than something like comedy. Sorry for the long post; anyone here have any suggestions? (I'd prefer something that can be watched on Hulu or Netflix, although if you have one that isn't available let me know anyway and I'll pick up the DVDs used sometime.) Thanks!
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

I've not seen much of it myself, (the only anime series I watch consistently is One Piece) though I've heard plenty. Case Closed sounds right up your alley. I won't blast you with details, so you can decide for yourself when you look it up or something :yogi: Highly recommend it.

If you don't want to watch very long series you could always try out the highly acclaimed Death Note (has similarities with Dexter and Now:Zero).

I suggest Princess Tutu. A total of 26 episodes, separated into "two 13-Episode arcs". Yeah it sounds and looks heavily like a typical Magical Girl anime and the first arc is definitely like it. But the show is really good - the animation is great, especially because it revolves around classical ballet and the music is wonderful. It's classical, the ballet dances are sometimes actual choreography taken from ballets that performed this or that piece, I found the characters to be engaging. The second arc is especially good. Yeah, it can still have hints of Magical Girl and the stockphrase of the villain, but it's still really worth it. Actually, I should rewatch it.
Well... okay, real reason I even decided to watch Princess Tutu initially was because of this AMV.

Um, I think the first anime episodes I watched in Japanese with subtitles was Fushigi Yuugi. Not all the episodes, mind you, only a handful but I rewatched them a lot.

I watched the first episode of Princess Tutu, thought it was really kiddy and stupid, and stopped. Later I found spoilers about the plot, and... man, I regret not giving it a chance. I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard good things about it, and don't let the kiddie first impression fool you (I think?).

Detective Conan/Case Closed is okay. It's tons and tons and tons and tons of mysteries. They're usually clever, not always quite fair. There's a plot, but it moves extraordinarily slowly, and the characters are all fairly bland. Good-quality pure detective fiction is tough to find, and this provides tons and tons of it, so there's that.

Death Note is also fine. (I haven't seen the anime, just read the manga.) The plot and things that go on are extraordinarily clever, but don't get fooled by the premise, or what the show wants you to think: Death Note has no philosophical depth. It's an entertaining thriller with tons of cat & mouse games between Light and the authorities, but don't expect any actual discussions on whether Kira is justified in what he's doing or anything.

One of my favorite mysteries series of all time is Kindaichi Case Files, which I would recommend over Conan any day of the week. It's not as long as Conan, but the mysteries are deeper and grander. The recurring characters aren't particularly deep, but the episodic characters and motive tend to be much more compelling than Conan. I'd definitely recommend it, but I'd also recommend the manga over the anime.

Fullmetal Alchemist (the original!!!! Dx) is really good. It's sho--oh you were already recommended it.

I like One Piece. It's one of the big shonen manga, so it's not some big, deep story, but characters tend to be reasonably deep, and while the story doesn't really have much depth, plot points from literally hundreds of episodes/chapters come back once you get to the mid/later stages of it, so it's not like some of the other big shonen series where it seems like things just come out of nowhere with the things established in the beginning of the series thrown out for the sake of rule of cool. Still might not be for you, though.

Last but not least, Revolutionary Girl Utena. This anime is... I don't know how to describe it. It's extremely surrealist, and, well... It has a lot to do with its characters. There's a plot, and it's there, and it develops, but it's mostly about the characters themselves. And being stylish. If I had to choose one word to describe Utena, it's probably be "stylish."

If you don't mind live-action instead of anime, Trick is probably the most perfect combination of mystery and comedy I've ever seen. The Liar Game drama is also not terrible, but the problem is that the drama switches around the order of events in the manga a bit, which completely ruins the amazing character development and growth in the manga. Liar Game is a fantastic series, and the manga is many, many times better than the drama, but if your goal is to listen to Japanese........

Satoshi Kon's movies shouldn't be missed. The guy was the japanese Kubrick, plain and simple.

The first FMA anime has one of the best plots I've seen in any anime. It's very long, but it's riveting from beginning to end.

Muryuu no hakou is one of a kind. Technically it's a mystery series, but it's much, much more than that. Please give it a try, it's absolutely unique.

For old school mysteries, please try detective Conan, detective academy Q and the kindaichi case files. Some cases would give Agatha Christie a run for her money.

I haven't seen much of the manga or anime for Detective Academy Q, but what I saw was good, and it's by the same guy as Kindaichi, so it's gotta be good.

And speaking of Christie, stay away from Agatha Christie's Great Detectives Poirot and Marple. It's terribly bland. (It's a great anime to MST with friends, though xD)

No kidding. The actual important parts are so slow and so far apart from each other, I generally forget what the hell they are exactly talking about because, since the last time something plot important happened, I've been shoved in the face with random deaths and chapters/episodes focused on the boring minor characters' love stories over and over.
Which is why I'd generally avoid watching Conan... it's a good show and a nice manga... but Aoyama really needs to end this or learn to goddamn pace is story properly...

Yeah, it's pretty much "filler : the series". The amount of subplots Aoyama has stacked up until today is just crazy. We're at the 750th episode mark, and absolutely nothing has been resolved, on the contrary, he keeps adding new subplots even today. On the bright side though, one can never have too much Vermouth :shoe:

Steins;Gate

Seeing as you like a good science-fiction centered story with shows such as Star Trek and the X-files, there is no anime I can recommend more than Steins;Gate. I was recently recommended this and fell in love instantly. Based on your interests in sci-fi, humor, crime drama (somewhat similar to mine) I can almost be 100% certain you will love this anime. Dubbed is the way to go, oddly. It was a shock to me too, but the dub is ultimately superior to the subtitled version and I could only love the show a percentage of what I do because of how spectacular the voicing is. And this is from a person who only watches subtitled. The character of Okabe is classic with the dub. After one episode you will see what I mean.

Centering a plot around time travel may seem a little cliche, but the plot itself is why I love the show so much, you have great character development, cause and effect analysis of time travel, enough confusion while still getting a hold of what is going on, and it is full of excitement and action, some really creepy moments when necessary, plot twists, deception, tear-jerkers, and in between some hilarious references to pop/web/otaku culture. There are 24 episodes, the first of which are more light-hearted while the remaining go a bit darker and have quite the sad moments. You won't find much visual fanservice although Daru does make some light-hearted perverted comments and innuendoes, which I personally just find hilarious. In terms of violence, there is some action with guns but not much blood except used properly for dramatic effect (i.e. specks on the floor/wall in a couple scenes).

I enjoy the dub even better due to the fact they don't deny the fact they are in Japan (one character is American and they use some jokes with that). They keep intact all the Japanese references to food, anime cosplay, maid cafes, etc.

Overall a 10/10 for me and a must watch. :phoenix:

As a side note, I really enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist for what it is including plot, characters, and battles with special powers. I goes pretty deep in some parts and makes sure to lay out the rules of the game (alchemy) very clearly. I enjoyed the aspect of battle action with more mature themes underneath, more so than One Piece although the latter scratches the surface. You won't find any real epic hand to hand battles in Steins;Gate except for some chase scenes and showdowns, but both have their share of fast-paced action. Haven't finished Fullmetal, however, but definitly plan to.
Mr. Edgeworth, do you realize if we played by the rules, we'd be in court right now?

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Now I have a bunch of stuff to check out.

Regarding Steins;Gate, I noticed there's a video game which was released before the anime. Is the anime a sequel or an adaptation of the video game? Because it looks like the game's never been released in English so I want to know if I'm going in not knowing what's going on.

And thanks, Bad Player! (I had to look those words up in a dictionary, but I was able to read them right, so I'm happy with myself haha. Although that might be because my "all Hiragana" test is tomorrow morning and I've been studying them for a good part of the day). I honestly took this class only to fill up a couple of units, but I'm really enjoying it! In a strange way, I'm actually finding it easier than learning something like Spanish, because since it's so different from English, when I have to speak and I go into panic mode I don't accidentally start using English grammar and sentence structure. It's only my second week; we've mainly focused on basic sentences (X wa Y, etc.) and are only just now starting on Katakana, but I'm really glad I took it and am having a bunch of fun. So I'll definitely keep at it!

Since you said you just started, I figured I should keep it short and all-hiragana :P 今甘えてるけど、いつか漢字やカタカナを使うから覚悟してね~(おっと、今使っちゃったなw)

I believe Steins;Gate is an anime adaptation of the game, but I'm not 100% sure. (It also looks like there's an English patch or something?) I've only seen the first episode, but I'm not sure it'll really be great early listening practice, since it seems like the speech in it is going to be very colloquial and probably use lots of advanced terms. ...Plus I've heard the dub is better than the sub xD

Obviously you can watch what you want, but simpler dialogue will probably be of more use. It won't be really simple unless you watch something kiddie like Doraemon, which you probably wouldn't enjoy, so then it's also probably better to focus on something with a less mature target age group (like Conan or... most/all of shonen, I guess) and/or a more "normal" setting (probably a school (specifically Utena)).

I give another vote to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Because all the GITS productions are like parallel universes to each other (manga =/= movie =/= SAC =/= ARISE), it's quite possible to like one GITS production and not like another. I for example didn't really like the movie, but I thought the original manga was okay. I love SAC though; a great episodic political SF thriller that keeps you on your toes every episode. Sometimes it's more like a traditional police procedural, sometimes they dig a bit deeper in the overall storyline, but always captivating.

I think you'd might like Monster, based on the manga by Urasawa Naoki. It's a thriller set in Europe about a Japanese doctor trying to hunt down a man he later discovers he shouldn't have saved on the operation table. Loads of great characters. And of the same author, Master Keaton, a show about an insurance investigator which sometimes feels a bit like a normal detective, sometimes like a MacGyver episode, but often features great human drama.

In the live-action department, I don't support BadPlayer's recommendation of Trick. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the show, but it relies so much on parody humor (of mostly detective tropes and Japanese popular culture) and wordplay, I don't think one could really appreciate it to the fullest extent at a beginning level. As for recommendations, I think the first Great Teacher Onizuka drama was great (there is a remake/reboot series running now), and the language used is probably fairly recognizable because it's set at a school. Going by your name and avatar, I assume you like Law & Order, so I am going to recommend Odoru Daisousasen / Bayside Shakedown. It's a comedic police procedural series about the people at the Wangan Precinct Police Station. And no, it's not a mystery show: because big cases are all handled by detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department, precinct detectives are just used as pencil pushers / local guides for the 'big' detectives / coffee boys. The series is about how the police works in Tokyo, about the 'boring' sides of police work and about the people working there.

Yeah DAQs longer cases are really fun for me in comparison also but the anime version is... It's atrocious.
I do like me sum DAQ OST though.

Although it's a long series, Hajime no Ippo is really fantastic (the anime has an OVA+75+26+26 or something episodes). The manga just finished its almost 12-month long fight so the pacing is just retarded these days, but at the beginning, Ippo vs Sendo 1&2 especially, DAMN

Also HunterxHunter 2011 definitely has great pacing and the arcs are never the similar like in One Piece, Naruto, Bleach etc, and it actually has some pretty clever writing made to fool the readers too every now and then I guess.

I'm gonna have to back up everyone who's recommended Steins;Gate. It's just so beautiful. I will disagree with the people who said to watch it in dub over sub. For one, I'll say I'm probably a little biased, since I primarily watch subs, unless the dub is brilliant (Cowboy Bebop), so I'll warn you of that.

The voice actors for the dub for the most part are all pretty good, with the exception of the voice actor for Mayuri, one of the key characters. To me, they 100% missed the voice for Mayuri, giving her a voice that doesn't match her characterization in any way. The other reason I'd have to recommend the sub over the dub, is not because the dub is bad, because really, it isn't that bad, its just that the sub is so amazing. The two main characters, Okarin and Kurisu, are soooooo brilliant in their sub. Okarin especially. The English VA did a fine job portraying him, but its hard to live up to what in my eyes, was true perfection, but take a listen to both and choose whichever you like better.

Also, Steins;Gate is an anime adaptation of the Visual Novel of the same name, which has gotten official English releases.

Given that this thread was made because he was beginning to take a Japanese class, I doubt he'll watch anime dubbed. I mean, kind of ruins the purpose...

Aaaaaaaand now I feel really stupid. People were talking about the dub, so I kinda wanted to say something about it.

Oh, and before I forget one last thing about the show. The first half (24 ep series) is incredibly slow-paced, but when you get to that halfway point, it gets ridiculously good. So even if you don't like it at first, try to get to the halfway point (episode 12), and you won't regret it.

Steins;Gate is a great anime! It's a sci-fi one (which isn't really I genre I'm in to), but I still found it so captivating to watch!

If you like the mystery genre, then Case Closed ("Detective Conan" if you want to watch it in Japanese) is a good one, along with Kindaichi Case Files (Although the first few cases in it had some dark tones).

For some good laughs, there's Nichijou (Be prepared from random happenings though, that show's pretty crazy).

I don't think DBZ is a good anime to watch if you wanna listen to Japanese to get used to it. Lots of DBZ's lines are various screams and grunts.

Here's my recommendation, don't watch anime.

I gotta admit, best recommendation in the thread

On the topic of Nichijou: if you want to fully understand Nichijou, you need an extremely high level of Japanese knowledge. However, even if you don't fully understand it, it'll probably still be entertaining (depending on your sense of humor) due to the general randomness and silliness. Just an FYI. ...Also, IIRC I think the language used is not that complex.

I can't remember how much blood there is in it, but Baccano! is great as well. Seconding Monster, Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex, and Haruhi as recommendations. Though... S2 is weird. Not sure if you'll enjoy it or not.

Steins;Gate... Was meh. It was decent, but it's pretty flawed as well.

And BP, duck is best anime ever.

...

And me being Kwando, I'm going to recommend Nanoha and Nanoha A's as well. (But that's magical girls, and I have no idea if that's to your liking. In any way.)

I don't know how much you'd be into it... but I just found this. I only glanced through a few videos, but from what I saw the language seems pretty basic and beginner-friendly.

May sound werid, but you might also want to check out Sailor Moon Crystal - very nice animation, although it does have some obvious signs of being rushed... or not having a great budget... but the language is decently enough for beginners and intermediates. Also contains Engrish phrases. Always fun.

It's okay. It's basically the manga in animated form (which is good) minus the slapstick that was in the very-far-off Anime from the 90s (which some find terrible). I can also see the annoyance that the transformations are in CG with Cel-Shading, but really, that's a close to 2 minute transformation (that was already getting shortened by now and we're only on Episode 5) out of a 20 minute episode (not counting opening and ending), so why get upset over something that is barely 2% of the episode?
Also some are annoyed that, aside from Kotono reprising her role as Usagi, all the others got new voices.
I don't mind the new voices. They're fitting.

I can recommend Outlaw Star, it's most likely in the Sci-Fi-Genre, One Piece is highly to recommend because it's a great anime and also Steins;Gate.

Though you stated that Attack On Titan is nothing for you, I'd recommend it anytime if I could, because I just really love this anime.

The beginning was quite fun, just with all the ups and downs

Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime, it's brilliant and amazing with a consistent level of quality in every episode. Great storytelling, character development, music, writing, etc.

Space Dandy is great too, but not for everyone. Some of the episodes are great, some are cringe worthy, but as long as you don't take it seriously, you'll probably enjoy it.

I honestly don't watch very much Anime at all, but one Anime I really enjoyed was Princess Jellyfish.
Since I'm horrid at describing things...
Spoiler: A Part from the Princess Jellyfish Wikipedia Article
Princess Jellyfish (Japanese: 海月姫 Hepburn: Kuragehime?) is a Japanese josei manga series written and illustrated by Akiko Higashimura. It began serialization in the Kodansha manga magazine Kiss on November 10, 2008. An 11-episode anime television series based on the manga was produced by Brain's Base and aired on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block between October and December 2010. The anime has been licensed by Funimation. A live-action film adaptation premiered in Japan on December 27, 2014.
Princess Jellyfish centers around Amamizukan, an apartment building in Tokyo, where the only tenants are otaku women, and where no men are allowed. While each character has her own particular fixation, the protagonist is Tsukimi Kurashita, whose love of jellyfish stems from memories of her deceased mother taking her to an aquarium and linking the lace-like tendrils of jellyfish to the dresses of princesses. Tsukimi hopes to becomes an illustrator and is an awkward girl terrified of social interaction, attractive people and the prospect of formal work. The other tenants of Amamizukan are the same, being NEETs who refer to themselves as the "Amars" (nuns). Tsukimi meets the stylish Kuranosuke Koibuchi, the illegitimate son of a politician, who cross-dresses to avoid the obligations of politics and to feel closer to his mother.

Even that's not really too good of a description of the Anime...
Also, here's the opening.

If anyone anywhere suggests you watch Boku no Pico, DO NOT.
