Is that not normal? Using all the potions I've hoarded like crazy is how I got through X's and XII's endgames.

Maybe in a full-fledged RPG it makes sense, damage is unavoidable and using white magic and items is an established method of healing.

But this game is more of an action game in implementation. I can block and dodge and move so when I keep getting hit it feels like there's a lack of skill or its just too difficult.

Also the healing is REALLY powerful....like basic potions restore half your health so there's no tension to it. I find in like X and XII its more like there's a little tension as to whether you can manage and counter the incoming damage.

In 15 there's never tension because healing is real powerful so its just a slow moment of stopping combat and irritating

I can see that. It wasn't until late game for me until I started using potions a lot. Still, I had a lot of fun with the combat system. Allowing Noctis to warp strike was a super smart decision. Without that, the game would have been more bland imo.

As for using healing late game though, that's usually always been a factor for me. It's just instead of spamming heal spells, I'm spamming potions in 15. At least the game is kind enough to offer some free heals in warping so I'm okay with it.

May 5, 1943 in my playthrough of Hearts of Iron IV: the Soviet Union declares war on Japan and its Chinese puppets, launching offensives in Sakhalin, Manchuria, Korea, and Xinjiang. Shortly thereafter, Soviet paratroopers land near Aomori, overwhelming the defenders and seizing the nearby naval base--and with it, a supply line to the mainland. The race is on to establish dominance in East Asia. The Allies are performing adequately in the south, but have thus far failed to advance much farther than Guangdong. Considering how long they've had, I don't expect any sudden incredible gains on their end.

Edit: January 25, 1944: Japan has surrendered. Though the Soviet Union did most of the work in defeating the Eastern Axis, the Allies still claimed some territories for their colonial empires. France took southern Guangxi while the United Kingdom took Taiwan, Hainan, and the Leizhou Peninsula. In addition, Allied-friendly governments were installed in Yunnan and Jiangxi. However, the rest of China (minus Tibet, which somehow managed to avoid getting invaded by Japan) was placed under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party, led by Mao Zedong. The Workers' Party of Korea, led by Kim Il-Sung, was placed in charge of a newly-liberated Korea. As for the Japanese Empire, while the Imperial family was spared, their rule was abolished and Japan made into a republic under the rule of Kyuichi Tokuda's Japanese Communist Party.

On the side, I had been supporting the SKP in Sweden. Unfortunately for Sweden, the British grew worried about growing Communist influence and chose to invade in order to install a puppet government. For some reason that is beyond me, Sweden chose to ally with Japan. The Soviet Union was right next door and had troops ready to come to Sweden's aid if only Sweden had asked for help. Instead, Sweden chose to ally with a country that was too far away to lend any immediate aid and getting thoroughly stomped in a war with the Soviet Union. Talk about your artificial stupidity. Rather amusingly, the British invasion of Sweden ultimately brought about the very thing it was trying to prevent; when the time came to make peace, the Soviet Union dictated the terms and installed a Communist government in Sweden.

Hearts of Iron 4 playthrough's finally done. Shortly after the end of the war with Japan, France went Communist and abandoned the Allies. There was a sort of uneasy peace between the Allies and the Comintern for a while. Eventually, the British made the first move by attacking Iran, leading the Soviet Union and the rest of the Comintern to declare war on the United Kingdom, which in turn led the UK's allies to declare war on the Comintern. And thus, the final phase of World War II began. The United States remained neutral and France decided to join the Comintern. Long story short, it did not end well for the Allies. Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands fell without much trouble. Supply problems in South Asia slowed the Comintern's advance through the British Raj, but the Allied forces there were unable to drive the Comintern forces back. As for the United Kingdom itself, their island "fortress" was a tougher nut to crack, but crack it we did. The combined might of the Comintern naval and air forces proved too much for the Royal Navy and Air Force. London, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Dover were all obliterated by atomic bombs, British fighters unable to intercept the bombers. By the time the invasion of England began in earnest, there was nary a British ship in the channel. The British put up a good fight, but between the atomic bombings and the ever-advancing Comintern forces, surrender was only a matter of time. I'd have granted Scotland independence as part of the peace deal (a bit of a running gag with me ever since my first complete Victoria II playthrough), but the game didn't include Scottish independence as an option. Most of the world is now Communist.

War with the United States never happened; they remained neutral to the end. Considering the situation, I think it's safe to say that they would have lost had war ever broken out.

To be fair, a Scotland granted independence by the Soviet Union as part of a peace agreement with a defeated United Kingdom probably would have been a socialist dictatorship. Freedom for a state is not necessarily freedom for its people. That said, I imagine future patches and/or expansions will add more countries that can be granted independence, so an independent Scotland, be it democratic, socialist, fascist, or something else entirely, will probably be an option in Hearts of Iron IV eventually.

You think? I find most credit rolls aren't new melodies but rather are rearrangements/compilations of previous themes.

Ghost Trick's credits theme lasts 2 minutes and 33 seconds before it loops, while the credits goes on for about 10 minutes.
Compare that to AA1's credits theme which goes on for 1 minute and 4 seconds before it loops, while the credits goes on for about 7 minutes.

Oh yeah, definitely agree agree with that too. Last time I played AA1, the credits felt annoying too.

On the same note, RftA's credits theme is wonky as hell. Though oddly relaxing after completing such a gigantic case.

RftA's credits theme was the one I found the most nostalgic for reasons I could never explain. At least until I found a remix of it using the Spyro the Dragon soundfont. Then it hit me that the credits theme to that game is practically interchangeable with RftA's credits theme, so of course I find it nostalgic.
Still better than AA2's credits theme. I can't even remember what that sounded like.

Haha, yeah, JfA's is so...unmemorable. All I remember is that it was rather somber but super generic. Not really fitting to be an AA credits theme.

AAI's credit themes are just remixes of Great Revival as well, and they both sound nearly the same.

Just finished playing through the Project Octopath demo, and I have to say I'm hyped as hell for when this releases. I'm not even a big RPG person, but everything about it was just so well constructed. Great VA, amazing music, fantastic story, fun (albeit somewhat simple) battle system...I could go on and on about how fantastic it is.

Layton's Mystery Journey. On the fourth case now (just started). It's...alright. I feel like they were planning to go for a more Mystery Room style this time but had to stick with the traditional formula. As someone who prefers the former I'm slightly disappointed but I will say I like Kat and Ernest. Not as a couple, just as characters. Sherl can go die in a hole though. Sooo annoying.

Finished the game. Um...yeah.

Spoiler: Endgame spoilers
I'm not really surprised that Sherl and Hershel never had their arc finished so I'm not annoyed by that. But the finale was super confusing. It was sad at some points, but I'm a bit disappointed. It was rather short for a finale, and...yeah. A lot of stuff didn't make sense. Of course, the climax relies on deliberately hiding info from the player to surprise them with a lesser Emmy/Clive twist. It also felt super contrived. Are you telling me Miles's mother was just expecting him to let go of that grudge? Why didn't Miles look into the matter regarding the mines? Why is he just back to work with Layton? HE'S RICH NOW HE COULD GET THEM A NEW OFFICE ENTIRELY! Also the cliffhanger suggesting Kat is illegitimate pissed me off. Where does Al come into this?

Overall, I'd put this in between Curious Village and Miracle Mask. It tries some new things, but overall I'm a bit apathetic to this game. The presentation was good, but the mysteries are bad, the puzzles suck, too many 'sympathetic villains' and each individual case is so arbitrarily short. Quality over quantity, and thus I prefer Layton Brothers over this any day.

Oh, cool. I mean, not that it hits close to home. That you are that far into the game - I still haven't managed to get myself to continue after the really boring field trip... I was gonna ask if December deals with the Casino, but I think that part was in October... late September?

I'm playing Story of Seasons. I really felt like playing a Bokujo game again. Though I know, and have put in a preorder, for Trio of Towns that's coming out... in 2 weeks, actually. I still need to find a way to get the rest of the money for it by then...

You know, I was thinking of SOMA earlier and why the game bugs me on some level. And I realized why: it doesn't have a satisfying ending. Maybe that's what they were aiming for, but given how the game ends, I just wonder... why did I just waste my time playing this? Some of the lore you find is interesting, I won't deny that, but... for the most part, after the game ends, I just lack this feeling of satisfaction. Which is pretty bad. And it's not even in the sense of "I'm too busy thinking about the various aspects or 'morals' in the game" sense. Just... nothing.

I didn't cry but I'm certainly remembering it with melancholy. The games always leave me wondering "but what's next for these guys? They are utter legends, the whole world is their oyster!" and it just leaves me wondering what else is in store and craving more. Really I just want a nice fanfic to settle down and give me closure on that sweet Futaba relationship.

Regarding SOMA's ending I think those kind of dissatisfying endings can be important in the message they leave. They can show a weakness in the character or I guess convey a powerful message about reality.

I suppose what matters is intent. SOMA's ending is meant to indicate that the only way things had worked out for you so far was random chance. Hopefully it would make you understand why so many other people in that plot had committed suicide in order to preserve 'continuity' as now your character was stuck in an awful fate with no escape through random chance. Honestly it may have been even more powerful if they hadn't shown the 'good' half of the ending as well.

I think a dissatisfying ending also works with Prince of Persia (2007) too. In that ending you basically undo all the work you'd done so far because the main character is emotionally weak. And its all played out very quietly with sincerity too to conveyconvey the weight of your decision. Particularly since the Prince is a gabby "Adventurer Thief" archetype and has been cracking jokes the whole game.

I could go on into the Last of Us as well but...

Bottom line is dissatisfying endings have their place. I think as long as the developers were going for the emotional disappointment in the ending then its fine.

*insert argument about FFXIII's ending being an unintentionally dissatisfying ending here*

Well, The Last Of Us does have a satisfaction to it, in a way. At the very least, it isn't openly asking the characters (and, hence, the player) about the moral choice in the ending and whether it was the 'right' or 'wrong' choice to do.

We'll both just not open the XIII debate.

My problem with SOMA is... the message is obvious, but I just see no sense in anything I was doing.

Spoiler: SOMA +Its Ending
You send the ARK out... okay, now what? It's implied that there are no humans left - if Sarah Lindwall really was the last surviving human and you let her die, as she asked you to. We don't traverse the entire ocean of the world, of course, but let's say no humans left. Just robots. The ARK? Pft, that's not humanity. Those, too, are robots.

I actually made a comment on YouTube, where I basically called the 'people' on the ARK nothing but screenshots of humanity. They have no chance to populate, progress or anything. They are just floating around. WHY did I do this? It doesn't serve any purpose. The people inside of that thing don't know what I did. It's not like I flung a light into the future - like, an actual rocket full of some alive, well humans to hopefully find a planet to live on anew and starting a new history for humans.

I'm just doing shit that doesn't matter. Even the WAU stuff seems kind of pointless. I know what they are going for, but so what if I leave it alone? They can't make HUMANS, so to speak. Don't bother doing anything in this game, it really doesn't matter much. Even if you kill the WAU, what now? Nothing changes.

CounterStrike: Global Offensive. Team based multiplayer FPS known for players shouting one specific slur in Russian.

No it's Captain Strike: Galactic Officer. Great game, but the ending is disappointing!
(Thanks for ruining the joke bro.)

I like how this statement about CS:GO started this strange little conversation.

As I'm replaying 999, the official flowchart for it, I realise, makes no sense. It's oddly structured. Though at least it exists in the newer version. The DS version is a pain in that regard, but it's all worth it for that sweet sweet payoff.

Sounds pretty cool to me. Kinda like Minority Report.

You thought you could be safe in your courts, with your laws and attorneys to protect you. In this world only I am law, my word is fact, my power is absolute.

After 999, going through my favourite parts of VLR. I think this may be an unpopular opinion, but I enjoy it more than 999 especially because of what they did with the flowchart.

Also wow the English dub is SUPER professional. Pretty neat honestly.

What the heck happened to this thread?

Um...currently not much for me. Jumped back on my replay of AAI2. Hard to get any new games with the weather over here.

Playing MGS3, and I think I am developing fangirlness for young!Revolver Ocelot. I have a thing for soldiers, you know. Also, I might ship Ocelot/Snake lol. So much Ho Ray in this game.

Also, while I dig the cutscenes and find the plot complex/interesting, can I say I just want to tell Major Zero to shut the f*** up sometimes? It feels he calls you via radio to talk about every single detail there is. It may just be me being impatient, but it gets tiring sometimes. I just skip 30-40% of Snake’s dialogues with Major Zero.
