[Thank you Nanjo for writing the execution]

“Alright, I think we’ve had enough of this.” John decided. “What goes around comes around. That’s karma, that’s the way of the universe.”

“T-The way of the universe?” Casey shuddered.

“Of course! You messed with the laws of nature! You think that wouldn’t come with consequences? All you’ve brought here is death and more death! You thought you could save everyone with your stupid plan? And you were stupid enough to attempt to use it again, not learning anything from the first time? This is what you deserve…”

Casey broke down in sobs. "I-I know...." She turned to the others. "Alright guys, have a great one! Don't be stupid like me, each of you have amazing-" She kept sobbing, not being able to finish. "God, I'm the luckiest girl in the world to know you all."

"IT"S PUNISHMENT TIME."
Spoiler: Sore Loser
Casey weeps softly. Each subsequent sob rocks her body harder than the last as she tries to keep it all in. Again and again she wipes her face, but every tear she wipes from her eyes is replaced with another immediately. The hand with the bat hangs lifelessly at her side.

From the wall comes a metal claw. It weaves slowly across the floor, approaching Casey from her blind spot. She doesn't realize it's there until it's too late, and it bites down on her ankle, making a crunching noise. Casey lets out a yelp like a wounded animal. She tries to move her foot, her eyes too filled with tears to see what's going on, but the clamp only bites harder, the sound of her bone grinding against metal echoing across the room.

Suddenly the arm with the claw pulls back, and Casey's leg gives out beneath her, her face smashing to the ground, a spray of blood coming from her broken nose. Her bat clatters across the floor. A pained whimper escapes her lungs, her body still shaking uncontrollably from sorrow. As she lays there on the ground, her arm blindly searches for the comfort of the bat.

Casey's twisted form is then dragged across the floor by the ankle, the bat drifting away from her. She chokes for air, sniveling, twisting, as she's smeared rapidly from one end of the room to the opening on the other. She lets out one last scream as she's hurled by the claw onto her back in a dark room, the act accompanied with a crack as her arm bends beneath her.

The lights dim in the courtroom, and the light is illuminated by a single red light in the other room, the students are hurriedly ushered in. Casey lays on a pool table in the middle of what seems to be the shadowy scene of a seedy bar. A figure cloaked in darkness walks over to the table, surveying the already mangled girl. Casey tries to curl up into a ball, but her arm and leg don't move, like she can no longer control them. She tries to hide her face from the shadowy figure, still sobbing.

"Hey asshole," Casey's voice comes from the shadowy figure, coldly and menacingly. "That was the last damn time you're gonna touch anyone again, freak."

The shadow Casey pulls out a pool cue, like the one from the alternate timeline, and there's a sound of squishing meat as she swings it down into Casey's stomach. The figure on the pool table whines and whimpers, but seems unable to move away. A set of Monokuma-shaped bouncer prevent anyone from getting closer.

"That was one. Let's go again, rat."

The second swing cracks against Casey's ribs. Flecks of blood fall to the ground. Casey groans and weeps on the table uselessly.

The shadow Casey doesn't stop there. Again and again she beats down the Casey on the table as she blubbers and lets out tortured noises, which echo noisily in the bar acoustics. The students can hear every snapping tendon, every crunching rib, every bloody gurgling noise. Minute upon minute, Casey continues to cry, even as her neck begins to bleed from the attacks. Her voice begins to be filled with the sounds of her blood. It's hard to make out in just how bad of shape her body is in the light, but Casey begins to move less and less.

After ten minutes bathed in the red light of the torture, the figure finally stops beating Casey.

"You lose, idiot! It's freakin' over, dumbass! Get the hell over it!"

The shadowy Casey takes the bloody cue and lines up her shot, pointing right towards Casey's head. The cue is shot, and it collides with Casey's head, letting out a heinous popping noise, and the head tears free of Casey's corpse towards the students. The head stops at Kagayaki's feet, tears in her wide, brown eyes.

Spoiler: before execution
"This would be more difficult... without a proper farewell," Kagayaki shook her head sadly as tears started to form in her eyes again. "For being allowed that much... I am grateful."

Kagayaki covered her mouth in horror as she watched the brutal execution. The ending finally broke her composure; as Casey's severed head rolled to her, she screamed miserably as her legs gave out. She crumpled to the floor, and wept loudly and pitifully.

Silas remains silent for a while, tears rolling down his face.

Then, he forces a smile, gives a nice big thumbs up to seemingly no one, and walks off to the elevator.

Akio trembled in place, not facing the others. "...W-Well...uh, now...I guess...:

Akio looked at the others, awkwardly shuffling hid feet. "...S-Sachi was avenged...s-so..."

Shirly looks on at the execution unfolding before her. Half way through, she looks away, wanting to give Casey at least some dignity before her death. After it was all done and over, she turned to Monokuma and Monoroomba.

"Are you satisfied yet? Ten people are dead because of you... every one of those people, yes, they had someone who hated them and sent them here. But they had someone who loved them, who cared for them just as much. Each person you killed, they were someone's family member, someone's friend, someone's helper. You ended everything about their being, everything they ever were, and ever will be. To do it once is messed up. But to force this again and again ten times over?

Casey was... is special to me, to all of us. You drove her to the point of no return, ended her very existence right here... I do not care who you are, but we will end you. For Casey's sake, for the sake of everyone who has ever died at your hand!"

Anissa had finished sobbing, and shakily spoke. “H-Hey, what about Sachiko’s gift?” She asked. “I know it’s a bad time but...well, I’ve never gotten a C-Christmas gift before and-”

“DADADA!” The roomba glided over with the gift on top of it. “PLEASE ENJOY THE GIFT TO YOUR PLEASURE.”

“Oh my god….” Anissa went to grab it, but the roomba swatted her hand away with its vacuum tube.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOU TWIT? YOU THINK SHE’D MAKE A GIFT FOR YOU AFTER YOU REFUSED TO FOR HER? IT’S FOR AKIO.”

“O-Oh whatever…” Anissa mumbled. “I didn’t want a gift anyway…”

“Darling, I made you something!” Shirly encouraged.

“Yeah you know what, on second thought I definitely don’t want a gift.”

Akio reached for the gift with shaking hands.

The present has a letter attached:

Merry Christmas! I tend to ramble on letters, so I'm going to try and make it quick. I hope you like the present I made for you! I wanted to make something special for my closest living friend here. Honestly, I can't even count how many times you've cheered me up on a bad day, or made me forget about this whole situation. When we get out of here, I really hope we stick together. We'd make a good team, y’know? I'll even be your assistant in your act, even if it means potentially being burnt to a crisp. You're one of the best people I've ever known, and I hope to be by your side for a long time coming!

All my love,
Sachiko Hachibani

The present is a jar of various colored herbs. It looks like liquid fire--his very own jar of fire.

Akio clutched the jar in one hand, letter with the otherm Sitting on the ground, overwhelmed, he held the jar close to his chest, hugging it tightly.

"I-I...Thanks, Sachi...I love it a lot..."

"...N-Nn..."

Tears suddenly streamed down his face. "H-Huh..?"

The tears kept falling. He closed his eyes tightly, holding the jar. "H-Hey..you were gonna be my assistant, righr? ..we were gonna tour the world...s-so why'd you have to..."

He choked on his words, looking up at the ceiling.

"W-Why'd you have to go and die like that?! Huh?!"

"...S-Sachiko..! D-Don't leave me alone here..!"

"I-I don't...I don't wanna be alone anymore..!"

"...I-I promise...I'll be the best I can be for you..! I won't forget you, s-so..!"

Akio wiped his eyes, getting up from the ground. "...Y-You're gonna be alive in some crazy universe out there...and you'll be fine there...don't worry...a-and I'll burn all these bastards to the ground..! I-I'm not afraid anymore..! They won't see it coming...w-what'll happen when I'm through with them..!"

It wasn't long before the tears started falling from everyone. Exhaustion, relief, sadness...it didn't matter. The trial was over.

They couldn't look back anymore, it was time to move forward.

After calming herself enough to stand again, Kagayaki once more took her gohei out. Still trembling with sorrow, she somehow managed to perform her funerary ritual for Casey.

Once she'd finished, she swallowed another sob that was threatening to surface, then quickly turned away from the execution site and walked towards the elevator, not looking back.

On the way, she stopped at Casey's podium to collect her jacket and the plush shark she'd left behind, as well as at her own podium for the pool cue she'd received for Christmas.

The next day, Akio awkwardly walked into the cafeteria. He peeked corners, unsure if he wanted to see the others, and he scurried into the kitchen. He wore the satchel on his right arm, while leaving his jar in his room, afraid he'd drop it or break it.

A few moments later, he sat at a table, staring blankly at the wall while drinking a banana milkshake.

Spoiler: Prelude
“Hello, you’re probably wondering why I brought all of you here.” John smiled.

“...this is about those videos you asked of us, right?” The old man said.

“Yup! Hundreds of applicants, but the stories of you 15 stuck out the most to me.”

“...really, now?” The woman was skeptical. “Why should we trust you?”

John shrugged. “I don’t care.” He put his elbows on the table. “But you guys wouldn’t be her if you didn’t think I could help you, right?”

Spoiler: Chapter 5: The Devil You Know
Motive time!” Monokuma announced. “Alright guys, if the blackened kills someone, they get to choose someone to graduate with them!”

“...I’m going to my room.” Lyla sighed.

Nobody else listened to Monokuma. They all turned back to where they came from.

“Hmph.” Monokuma grumbled. “Well, they’ll come back. They always do…”

About a month had passed after that. Still no murder. He had gathered everyone up again.

“Alright, scratch the last motive.” Monokuma was sweating a little but regained his composure. “T-The next motive is uh…” He snapped his paws. “Ah, right! This amulet! It can protect you and stuff like that!”

“...”

“...”

“...”

Another month had passed. Smoke was coming out of the roomba as it spun in circles, clearly not satisfied with the situation.

“A-ALRIGHT. YOU GUYS HAVE TWISTED OUR ARM, BUT WE HAVE A NEW MOTIVE. T-THE NEXT PERSON TO KILL WILL GET A BRAND NEW PAIR OF SANDALS.”

“Are you kidding me?!” Molly shouted. “Are you even trying anymore?”

“I’ll give them credit.” Shirly huffed. “Those are really nice sandals.”

More motives were thrown at everyone in the coming months. A scary clown lurking the halls, bees released in almost every room of the school, ten million dollars, and even forcing everybody to share a bedroom.

Nothing worked. Each motive even ended up getting formally cancelled.

A lot had changed since the last trial. It had been an entire year. Nobody killed. Anxiety had run high at points (the clown didn’t do any favors) and people were getting increasingly anxious, but nobody killed.

For all intents and purposes, the killing game was over. They were all still trapped at the casino, repurposing many of the rooms over the year to fit their needs.

It was the start of a new year--it was the start of a brand new day.

"One full year now... is that all you got? Come on, just give it up, no motive will end us. Your motives have done nothing but de-motivate us, especially that bedroom one."

Shirly looked behind her to make sure there was no scary clown.

"I don't think it's wise to taunt the bear..." Lyla coughed a little. "Or he'll release the bees again."

"Hah. A year is nothing!" Silas runs in from the hallway, now wearing Casey's jacket. "Stupid sandals aren't anything either. I'd tell you to try harder, but even then nothing you can do will work on us."

"A year is nothing... how can you say that? Maybe it's nothing for you, but it's still an entire year of being here, in this place, with nothing else to do, with no contact with the outside world..." Lyla sighs.

"That's not the point! I was trying to say that nothing they can do would work on us!"

Shirly nervously bit her lip.

"I had no idea you had such an interest in sandals, Silas," Kagayaki smiled innocently. "I do have an extra pair, and though they are not as fancy and may not fit you, you may have them if you like. ...Not for free, of course," she added with a smirk.

Her less serious attitude and more casual way of addressing the others wasn't the only thing that had changed about Kagayaki in the months since she was first marooned on the island; her usual wardrobe had changed as well. Between the lack of a need to disguise her talent and the tropical climate, she eventually decided to alter her cumbersome miko uniform. She had removed the sleeves from her haori, shortened her skirt to her knees, and began wearing her sandals without socks, though she kept her hair ribbons.

She sighed heavily. "It's been a year since then, has it...?" Kagayaki shook her head to dismiss the melancholy thoughts that had started to gather in her mind. "Perhaps we should consider building our own watercraft again. We decided it was too risky before, but what other choices do we have if we wish to leave?"

Spoiler: Motive
Monokuma appeared out of nowhere. It felt different this time. He was just a machine but...a more sinister aura was emanating from him.

Hello, my lovely students.” He smiled.

“Hmph.” Akio wouldn’t even look at him.

“Hey, Monokuma.” Silas sighed. “Been some time.”

“Yeah, sorry about that. I was trying to work up this banger of a motive for all of you.”

“We don’t have to listen to him.” Kagayaki said. “We should go.”

“I really do think you should listen.” He insisted. “After all, it involves why you’re all here.”

“W-What John said, right?” Lyla asked.

“Oh yeah…” Anissa remembered. “We were all volunteered...or something.”

“Well, meet your nominators!” Monokuma turned on a TV on the wall. 7 silhouettes appeared. “Each person has a serious grudge against one of you. In fact, they’ve been watching the killing game this whole time!”

“Y-You can’t be serious…” Molly rubbed her hands. “Nobody can hate us that much, right? That they wouldn’t even call for help…?”

“Well, only 7 are still watching. Only 7 have a reason to still watch. But I decided to give them a bit more of an...active role this time.”

Monokuma pressed a button on the remote. The feed switched to a building. There were 7 rooms side by side--each one had a button and a timer inside.

“I asked them to play a killing game too. Much different than yours--their lives weren’t at stake. The rules are simple:”

1. Each nominator has a button in front of them. They can’t leave the room until they press the button or two weeks have passed. Food and water are provided.
2. Each button is linked the life of the person the nominator nominated--a participant in the killing game.
3. Every minute the button goes unpressed, the nominator receives $10,000. Therefore, the highest amount of money a nominator can receive from abstaining to press the button is around $201,600,000.
4. Whoever presses their button first makes their nominee a target.
5. Due to the incentive from not pressing the button, it stands to reason that whoever presses the button first hates their nominee the most, and that nominee deserves to die the most.

“Hold on.” Kagayaki interrupted. “Rule 5 doesn’t make sense. A financial incentive is hardly a strong incentive for everyone.”

“What about this target business?” Silas said. “What’s that all about? What does that mean?”

Monokuma smiled. “The target loses their life 48 hours after the button is pressed. The only way to stop the target’s death is if a murder occurs.”

“H-Hey!” Anissa protested. “That’s not a motive! You’re forcing our hands if you threaten our lives!”

“Well, there’s a bit of an addendum.” Monokuma smiled. “There’s another way for the target to save their life.” Monokuma pressed another button on the remote. A panel of the wall opens up, revealing a hidden door.

“The only thing in that room is a camera. If the target confesses their crime to the camera, nobody dies.”

“A-All everyone needs to do is confess then…?” Akio asked.

“We’re getting ahead of ourselves.” Shirly said. “We’re assuming these nominators will even press the button in the first place.”

“Fine then.” Monokuma grinned. “I’ll show you the results:”

Button Game Results:
1. First Place: Participant C - .3 seconds

The class just stared at the results. It was like the air had been taken out of the room.

“Not even a second…” Anissa muttered. “W-What? Who’s the target then?”

“Whoever Participant C nominated. I’m sure they know who they are…” He began to walk away. “Whoever you are, you’re going to die 24 hours from now unless a murder occurs or you confess in front of the camera...choose wisely.”

"Wh-What the fuck!?" Silas shouts, confused. "You had this up your sleeve for a year and only now something comes of it!?"

"This isn't happening.. God, no. We've gone so long.."

"I- It's fine! Th- There's nothing to worry about..." Anissa says, but judging by her expression it's clear that she knows there's plenty to worry about. "We all just have to confess in front of that camera, right?"

"E- Except..." she mumbles, looking at the floor and trembling. "I don't even know what I'm supposed to confess you... H- Hell, I don't even know who nominated me! There's so m- many options!"

"W-Well, if there's nothing to worry about, then someone go ahead and start us off," Molly insists, urging someone to make the first move. "If we go ahead and get this over with, then we can forget about this dumb motive, right?"

"I mean... there's nothing I could think of that someone would want me dead this badly!" she quickly adds.

"BY THE WAY, NO MORE THAN ONE PERSON CAN BE IN THE CAMERA ROOM DURING A CONFESSION."

"These... 'nominators' have been watching us all along, yet we are only now being presented with this motive?" Kagayaki pressed her fist to her mouth as she thought. "Who precisely will witness these confessions, and why is only one person allowed in the camera room at a time? That seems to be a strange restriction..."

"THE CONFESSION WILL BE BROADCAST TO EVERYBODY IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD, AFTER WE'VE MADE SURE IT'S SUITABLE. AS FOR THE RESTRICTION, IT'S SO THERE'S NO GUARANTEE TO THE REST OF YOU THAT ANYBODY WHO GOES INTO THE ROOM ACTUALLY CONFESSES..."

Kagayaki's eye twitched. "I... I see."

She stayed silent for several more seconds before smiling to the group. "My apologies, but I cannot make a decision right now. There is much for me to consider. If you will excuse me..." She bowed her head and started to leave for her room.

"...okay, I will. Let me in... please."

Shirly raises her hand at the Monoroomba and Monokuma.

"Even if I have to lie and falsely confess, even if it means sacrificing everything, I will do it! My family is out there, they need me. They are divided, separated in extreme poverty. Who cares about some barista competition or getting more tips, I have so much more at stake."
