"Man, what a simply boorish solution," Otto remarks, "I certainly hope that isn't the final answer... Remember kids, if you come up with stupid murder plans, they reflect negatively on us! So always try to keep things interesting, if you will!"

"What's with people wanting to make this stupid 'game' interesting..." Urumi muttered under her breath. "Well, things seem to more or less fit together if we're assuming it was Raul," she added aloud. "Can anyone think of anything that goes against that theory?"

"I suppose, on reflection, that it is unlikely anyone saw me enter the codes just by watching. Koichi would have been the only one. Not unless they had some special way of doing so, anyway," Keri said.

"Bzzt, it was before Oscar started his count down, bzzt," V.A.L. answered.KamiPanda wrote:"VAL, at what point in the countdown did you see James turn to aim at you?" Keri asked gently.

"Ah, he would have had plenty of time to turn back again, then," Keri said, nodding. "It is still possible for James to have been shot from the saloon."

Kyle shuffles around behind his microphone.
"What's all this about a party you guys are talking about? Look, I can say what I want about anybody I want, Koichi! Boss says so! Though I think on my first cruise the rules were different and I had to be way nicer."

"Alright, let's say the killer is Raul." Jack suggested. "What exactly is the working theory here? Specifically the part where he shoots James."

"Well, I wasn't exactly watching him at the time, and I don't think Keri was either, so he could have just pulled the gun out and shot him, then tucked it away and fell into the glasses pretending to be shot. We're still kind of stuck on the whole getting a gun part, though," she frowned.

"The timing on that might be difficult, though," Keri said. "James was shot near the end of the countdown, which is also when we heard Raul fall over. I don't know if he could move fast enough for that."

Urumi pursed her lips. "Okay, this will probably sound really, really stupid, but is it possible the killer didn't even use a gun? Like, maybe they were just able to throw the bullet at James hard enough to kill him or something?"

"That would not explain why a blank needed to be taken," Keri said. "A blank is only useful if you intend to actually fire the bullet, or more typically if you intend to fake the firing of a gun at least."

“Given the sound of the train, the noise of gunshots should be drowned out too. So I don’t think the blank was needed to fake a gunshot sound, but its explosiveness. So I at least think we’re on the right track there...”
He thought a bit. “Oh and we do still have the lifeline if we end up needing it.”

"Well, uh... Maybe it was taken to make us THINK it was used for that?" Urumi glanced in V.A.L.'s direction. "For what it is worth, I doubt the killer was relying on that train appearing," Keri pointed out. "But, judging by what Otto said before, such a 'boring' answer might not do anyway. It is strange to have to think this way, but perhaps we can assume the murder happened as though the killer expected the train, in which case they did not need to fake the sound as you said."JesusMonroe wrote:“Given the sound of the train, the noise of gunshots should be drowned out too. Jack put his hands on his hips staring at Otto and the telephone. "Well then? Did you tell anyone a train was coming at noon?"

"There aren't any like, postings, or anything here about the train schedule, come on, this is getting kind of silly. You can assume there's no way for anyone to have known about the trains by searching for the answers here."
"Also there's no like secret ultimate train schedule genius, if that becomes a theory."

"Okaaaay, so the killer didn't know about the train. Meaning that when they fired the gun, they were confident that people wouldn't be able to identify where it came from...somehow." Jack sighed with exhaustion. "I don't know, my mind is hopping to 'suicide' more and more."

"Exactly!" Otto says, "No one except Kyle and I had any clue I would take that train out at noon, and I'm quite certain that I never told anyone!"

"Suicide is unlikely, but... that does actually present a problem. You are right, Urumi and I would have certainly noticed if Raul fired a gun inside the saloon if the train hadn't been there... even if he shot it through himself to try and muffle the shot. Raul cannot have known the train would be there, so... I am not sure what that means for this theory, it seems to contradict it," Keri said, clearly troubled.JesusMonroe wrote:"Okaaaay, so the killer didn't know about the train. Everybody checks V.A.L.'s compartment thing. They find a secret train schedule hidden inside along with a bloodstained revolver.
Just kidding, all they find is a bunch of bullets. Keri counts them and says that none are missing.

"Ugh, so where does that even leave us?" Urumi groaned. "If Raul didn't shoot through the window, either someone else shot through it and hit him, or, I don't know, maybe he really DID throw the bullet through it? I don't know as that's something he could even do, but if someone shot at him, we're back to the problem we had before with too many shots. Maybe something else really did cause the leak at the tower...?"

"Bzzt, should we consider the possibility that it wasn't water under the tower, bzzt?" V.A.L. wondered. "I do think the simple answer of water is correct, bzzt."

"Alright, so, I don't see how anyone could have actually thrown the bullet through the window, and Raul couldn't have known the train would be going through at the time of the duel, so he probably didn't shoot through the window either. That would mean the bullet that made the hole came through from the outside and hit him. If that shot came from Koichi's gun, though, it would have had to bounce off something, probably in the area of the post office."
Urumi sighed. "Did anyone who investigated the post office find anything that looked like it was hit by a bullet, or even anything it could have ricocheted off?"

"So if Koichi's bullet didn't ricochet off anything and Raul didn't shoot the window, the only other one who was in a position to shoot through the saloon window... was V.A.L., right...?" Urumi concluded uncertainly.

"As requested, I shall try and recollect my conversation with Kyle with perfect accuracy!"
Koichi spends a while in the post office, watching over the safe. Eventually, he hears the telephone sitting on the desk start to ring. Somewhat concerned, Koichi puts the receiver to his ear.

Bryan crosses his arms with a slight frown. "So he wanted you to leave the safe all alone... Could've been a prank call, yeah, but... it just seems a little suspicious, trying to convince you to leave the safe unguarded," he said to Koichi. "Plus, adding on to V.A.L.'s theory, the post office was the only place that had both a safe and a phone... Why would he even call there in the first place?"

"Between the call and the train, it sure sounds like he was trying to pull something to me." Urumi glared at one of the speakers mounted on the courtroom wall. "Well?" she demanded. "Were you working with the killer or not? I thought you were supposed to be unbiased!"

"Ok, maybe we need to turn our thinking around. The killer needed the train for their plan to work, but didn't know the train was coming. Ipso facto, they weren't actually planning on killing someone until the train arrived." Jack raised his finger in the air to emphasize the conclusion.
"As for a working theory...I don't know. Maybe James and Raul were planning something together where James would 'kill' someone at the end of the duel, but it would actually be Raul who did it...but Raul decided to kill James instead when the train provided the opportunity...or something." He shrugged.
