...

BEEP! BEEP!

On a public highway, the sound of two cars scraping by each other is lightly heard. “Ugh, what the hell…” A man in one of the car mutters to himself. “Hey! Watch where you’re going, jerk! You nearly crashed into me!” The man angrily shouts at the Mercedes in front of him as he looks out the window.

“Maybe you shouldn't go so slow, then!”, the man in the Mercedes retorts. “You think I’m gonna let a lil’ bitch like you get in my way?”

The other man turns a furious shade of red. “You better be careful with your words there, pal. I don't like you tryna take the piss over here.” He cracks his knuckles.

The fellow in the Mercedes lets out a derisive snort. “Yeah, as if I’d be scared by a scrawny pussy-ass lookin’ dude like you. Get outta ‘ere.” He calmly turns and continues driving at full speed.

“You think I’ll take that?! Come at me, shithead!” The other man revs up his car and follows behind him at full speed, determined to show him who’s boss.

Meanwhile, as more chaos and road rage occurs on the main highway, a smaller path off to the side resides silently, with not a single vehicle taking the route. A worn down, battered sign sits right next to the forlorn road. It reads:

Rattlewater
Est. 1921
Population: 2263

The road leads to a small town, residing in its own secluded little corner of the world. Despite that, though, the town appears to be bustling with activity especially on this particular day. The chirping of sparrows can be heard throughout, along with the continuous chattering of the locals. While everyone appears to be in good spirits currently, it is apparent that today is a very important day for them. Gossip seems to be rather widespread currently.

“So you think it’ll go well? Sounds like a risky mission, if ya ask me.”

“Aw, shucks, I’m sure it'll be fine. Sixteen of ‘em Star Citizens should be able to handle anything in them tunnels!”

“Hmm, I never liked the sound of those so-called Star Citizens anyway. All a buncha dirt, I bet.”

“Those caves are pretty old, too. What if they collapse on everyone?”

“Did you hear about the girl who vanished? I don't think she was quite right in the head…”

“I think I’ve seen her father around… Rude fella, really. Ya reckon that’s why she ran away?”

The townsfolk eagerly yet quietly discuss amongst each other as the day goes by. Sometime during the afternoon, in a small part at the outskirts of town, a small impromptu stage is set up with about 16 seats given for people to sit in. Slowly, some people start arriving and taking their seats. Most of them have brought bags with them containing various possessions like clothing, food and even torches.

After a while, it appears that 15 people have taken their seats, with one seat remaining empty. Everyone stays silent for a while, not wanting to converse yet. Just as the silence is getting rather awkward, a small clearing of the throat is heard before a short rotund man takes the stage. Despite his tiny stature, he carries a grand air with him with his fancy suit, his well groomed moustache and his horn rimmed glasses.

He takes a look at everyone currently present and gives a small nod. “Very well, I suppose that’s just about everyone, then… Anyway, welcome, Star Citizens!” The man jovially proclaims. “I am, of course, the mayor of Rattlewater, and today I am here to explain to you what you’re all here for. It may seem obvious currently, but please, bear with us, for this is quite necessary. You all are some of the best and most talented people we have in this town, as you know. You’ve all earned your own title of Star Citizen for doing something meaningful and useful that benefits our little town.”

He suddenly gives a solemn glance at the others. “Today, though, is a most serious day, for you all will be undertaking a most important journey deep below. Last night, something horrible was witnessed. One of our very own citizens vanished into the natural caverns of our little town all on her own. This is quite concerning, and we simply cannot have someone like her disappear, so you have all been enlisted to go down on a rescue mission to recover her. You are allowed to bring your own resources with you, but please leave anything extra or unnecessary behind. We must be prudent in times like these and make haste to rescue her safe and sound.”

“Of course, our missing citizen herself is of importance. Much like you all, she is also a Star Citizen.” He holds up a photo to everyone. The photo is of a girl, around 20-23 years old. She has a strange look in her eyes in the photo and appears to be strangely pale. “Her name is Enola- Enola Gardner, to be precise- and she is the Star Poet. Or Poetess, specifically. Either way, we cannot simply lose our loving citizens like this, so we must trudge forward and return her back to her hometown safe and sound! That should be all, really.” He nods.

“Now, I suppose I’ll talk to Jason about the transportation now. Don't worry, though, the trip itself shouldn't take long. In the meantime, perhaps you all could get talking with each other since you’ll all be tightly knit for the expedition.” He cracks a light smile. “Though I’m sure some of you might know each other as well. It’s a small world, after all!” He chuckles, walking off stage without giving the others a time to respond.

Now that he’s gone, the Star Citizens are alone with each other. The 16th seat still remains strangely empty, for whatever reason… Either way, it seemed now would be the ideal time for introductions.

[You may now make a post introducing your character to everyone. Restrict yourself to just one post for now. After everyone has posted, the game will properly start, so try to post within 24 hours or so if you can.]

Spoiler: The Rulez (cool kids only, sorry grandad)
Most of these aren't really rules so much as suggestions as to what not to do here but we recommend you follow these anyway for a generally fun experience here.

  • Be active. This should be fairly self explanatory. It's better for everyone if you can post frequently (and meaningfully) in the thread throughout the game, especially for us GMs.
  • Be active during trials. Emphasis placed here especially since trial activity is far more important than in the Exploration Phases. Inactivity here will be severely frowned upon and will leave you liable for death in the following chapters. As a side note, if you happen to be inactive during any part of the game and you have a legitimate excuse for it, please contact us beforehand so we can sort it out appropriately. And no, finding difficulty with the trials themselves does not count. The effort you put into them does count, though, so be sure to do your best.
  • Try to develop your character. Sort of a bit vague, but you should try and make sure that your character has a satisfying arc throughout the game and interacts with characters properly. Using your EFLs for this purpose is highly recommended. Reacting to events, murders and the like is also important. Just make a suitable impact on the rest of the cast, whether they like or hate your character. If nobody really has anything to say on your character, then it tends to say a lot about them.
  • Please keep this game SFW (Safe for Work). Me and Nanjo are both allergic to fanservice so we'd really prefer it if you kept it away from us. Even other than that, some characters this game may end up below 18 while others may be above 18, so stick on the safe side just in case. The stray cat who lives outside my house reads these so just be careful. Also as a corollary, I did some extensive research on the subject and discovered that it is a well known truth that most rescue teams sent down into deep dark murky tunnels do not happen to wear swimwear in there, so we are hereby preemptively banning any characters who dress up in such a crass, undignified manner. We apologise for the inconvenience- hahaha no we don't suck it losers
  • We reserve the right to kick anyone off the game for any reason. This is mainly to establish a precedent more than anything, it's highly doubtful this will actually need to happen any time during the course of the game. Just don't do anything crazy which breaks the rules, and hopefully you'll be fine.
  • No godmodding. Godmodding is simply saying or insinuating what characters other than your own character are doing. It's generally uncool to do, and you're probably better off just refraining from it (unless you have the player's approval in advance to do so). The GMs, of course, reserve the right to write for all of your characters in our posts, but we promise to be faithful to them as much as possible.
  • Think about what's best for the game as a whole and be flexible as possible with your character. Attempt to prioritise contributing positively to the narrative overall, as that may leave a bigger impact on others. RPing with others is basically a community writing project, so it's good to work together to make a memorable story. As a great sage once said, "The worst thing you can do in improv is say 'no'", so working along with others for an ideal experience is pretty key.
  • Be flexible with your character as much as you can. You might not get what you want ideally, but try playing with what you've got as best as possible. It's good to have more than one idea for your character, so try not to get attached to a particular ending. We all can't be the chapter 4 killer, after all. If you get some other cool ideas for your characters, let us know too so we can give you a satisfying send-off!
  • Doctor Nanjo and Southern Corn are allowed to sign up for this game! Just in case we're really in need of a first victim or something, y'know.

Spoiler: Killing Game Rules
0. The Killing Game starts with 16 people, within any age range.
1. The Killing Game will begin once the Game Master is summoned.
2. For the Killing Game to begin, all major entrances should also be closed in advance.
3. Once the Killing Game starts, the players will be confined to the caves with only each other.
4. The players are allowed to explore the caves with minimal restrictions, but are not allowed to try and escape normally.
5. The only way for a player to escape the caves will be to murder another player without getting found out.
6. Once a player’s dead body has been discovered by three people or more, it will be publicly announced that a murder has occurred.
7. Sometime after the body discovery announcement, the Tribunal will begin. The participants of the Tribunal will be the remaining players.
8. The purpose of the Tribunal is to find the tainted, who is the killer behind the other player’s death.
9. The Tribunal will end once all the participants of the Tribunal vote on the tainted’s identity.
10. If the majority of the participants have voted correctly on the tainted’s identity, they all will be spared whereas the tainted themselves will be brought and executed in front of the others.
11. If the majority of the participants have incorrectly voted on who the tainted is, they will be granted escape from the caves and be freed whereas the others will suffer a horrific punishment.
12. The Killing Game may continue till either only three players remain or if the Game Master decides to let it end.
13. Violence against the Game Master is prohibited.
14. Violation of any of these rules will result in death.
15. Addition of other rules or modification of prior rules or removal of prior rules may be performed by the Game Master if deemed necessary.
16. The first death before the accompanying tribunal is the one for which the culprit behind the death becomes the tainted. If the tainted is ever killed, however, then the tainted becomes the one to have killed them.

"Miss Enola all alone, we will save her, yes?"

A blue-haired guy in a karate costume said this. He had big soft eyes and a pointed nose. He was a black belt, judging from the black colored belt hanging from his waist.

He looked around at his fellow star citizens.

"I see a familiar face or two here. Allow me to introduce me to all of you. My name is Ciro Pérez (See-row Pay-rez). I am the star citizen sushi chef."

He made a small motion of cutting fish in the air.

"I run a small restaurant in town. Once we are done here, feel free to come by!"

"Ah, how delightful. How simply charming! Sixteen Star Citizens, united under a common, righteous goal...Oh, how pleased my creator would be to see this." What appears to be a young woman, adorning a ballerina's tutu, with violet hair and piercing purple eyes, smiles gently at the others and holds a hand to her heart.

"Ah, I suppose I should introduce myself as well. I am known as Lavender Fae, the Star Ballerina, Doctor Henson's very own Dancing Automaton. You might have already seen my performances in the local theatres and such...What a pleasure it is to meet you all."

Lavender gets up from her seat to give a curtsy to her fellow Star Citizens, but stumbles slightly while doing so. "Oh dear, just a moment.." It appears Lavender has gotten the large golden key in her back stuck in the gap between the seat of the chair and its backrest. Once she manages to remove it, she proceeds to attempt another curtsy, somewhat embarrassed by her blunder. "Please forgive my awkwardness...I am still a work in progress."

The ballerina examines the group once more, noticing a few familiar faces. "I see some of us might already be acquainted." Lavender holds her hands together in a polite and modest manner. "I sincerely hope I can aid you all in some way. My purpose is providing joy and comfort, after all."

The youngest member in the group sighed and turned to address the others, perhaps wanting to get his introduction out of the way quickly.

"Sebastian Torr, Star Cleaner. Seb for short," he said in a rather cold, monotonous voice. "The caves can be pretty dangerous... so try not to do anything stupid down there."

Image

He had naturally purple hair and wore a cloth around his neck that presumably could be brought up to mask his face, though for the moment it was down for ease of talking. His clothes, a tracksuit and boots, were simple and utilitarian, good for cleaning in but also reasonably well-suited to cave exploring. However there were also a pair of pink rubber gloves sticking out from one of his pockets which seemed a little... extraneous. As he turned back around in his seat, a large multi-purpose mop could be seen on his back for some reason.

He seemed entirely unfazed by the reveal of a robot in their midst. He was rather unfazed by this whole affair, really.

One girl seemed to stand out among the rest...or perhaps more accurately smell out. And look out. She was just different, ok? Nobody could really recognize her and she seemed to appear out of nowhere for this meeting, taking a seat and grunting a few noises to herself.

The people who had sat closest to her had already moved their chairs a safe distance away. That was ok with her.

"Carrie like being alone." She said to herself or maybe everyone else. The flies buzzing around her didn't seem to be insulted by the comment. The girl herself was...well she was ugly. Very ugly. She looked like a rat who took an extended bath in sewage, and smelt like that same rat died, was stuffed with a few more dead rats, and then scorched on fire which only made the whole thing smell worse. But perhaps that description would be insulting to rats. Who can say? Rats can't talk.

"Carrie help others. Carrie find woman. Carrie good at exploring. Carrie Star Spelunker." That was the best translation one could make of whatever combination of syllables and grunts came out of her mouth at least.

Something else seemed off about the girl. If you closed one eye, and squinted the other one really hard while looking into the sun and everything became kind of indecipherable...she loosely resembled a red insect. Like a ladybug. But I suppose anything could look like one given the right circumstances...

Hm. There were two rows of seats. Eight people for each row. But one of the seats was empty, off to the side. Almost like it was hiding something. Hm.

Well, there would be time to consider that later, as an exceedingly tall man, easily head and chest higher than the vast majority of the cast, if not everyone there, unfolded himself from a seat in the back. His bald head shone in the sunlight, and he was, oddly enough, in a full suit. He placed a hand over his breast and bent at the waist; a perfect 30 degrees.

"How do you do, fellow citizens?" He started politely enough. "I am certain many of you know me already, but allow me to clear the air for those who do not." The man straightened, and gave a smile. "My name is Nail, and some of you know me as the Star Duality. I give advice and suggestions to those who ask it of me. I suspect my skills will be put to good use here."

He sat back down, his piece said, apparently already going over the information given to them, having pulled an entire dossier out of his suit. Anyone who chanced a look at it would find it comprised of information on the missing person, reports of oddities in the general area, and even the local geology and wildlife. He certainly wasn't going in unprepared.

Someone wearing a rather comfy looking green coat with a hood over their head started clearing their throat. Rather exaggeratedly. And loudly.
... Once they had the attention they wanted, they pulled the hood back, showing themselves as a young woman with a mop of brown hair and green eyes.
"Heya. I probably don't need to introduce myself, but I thought I might as well get through the formalities." she put a hand over her chest, "I'm Charlie. That's Charlotte Church, by the way, Star Community Benefactor (officially), queen of the highway (unofficially), queen of thieves (unofficially), queen of Rattlewater (unofficially), and, of course, this dump of a town's personal Robin Hood."
She leaned back on her chair with confidence and style and almost tipped it over backwards, but recovered easily and kept talking. "Anyways, for the slow kids in the back there, that means I'm kind of a big deal. Hell, you've ever eaten at RB's? Course you did, well, you probably ate something I stole from some no name farm from around here. You're welcome, by the way! So, in short, I should not be here, getting ready for some dumbass expedition to rescue some dumbass that went and got herself lost in a cave, but whatever. I guess this is just mayor man's way to thank me for helping his shitty city."
Done with her whining, she kept leaning back in silence, looking around disinterestedly.

In contrast to the others, someone who looks to be about fourty years old starts walking around, inspecting each and every one of the people who've, so far, introduced themselves - nodding to himself along the way. This man seems to be pretty tall and quite muscular, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, forest camo-style pants and a beige t-shirt. His hands are put together behind his back as he turns to face the rest.

"Hi. It might not be a pleasure for you to meet me. I'm Daniel Kennedy, the Star Drill Instructor. If you have even a maggot-sized hint of a brain, you can probably guess why I'm here and what I used to do. I'll cut you some slack for now. Enjoy it while it lasts."

Crossing his arms in front of himself, it's revealed that he seems to have brought a megaphone, which he holds rather tightly in his right hand. Just as suddenly as he stood up, he sits back down, sighing to himself, muttering something about 'another bunch of kids'.

"Introductions, huh? Splendid! I suppose I will go next," an English-accented voice spoke up. The voice belonged to a handsome, clean, lithe, and rather tall -- though nowhere near as tall as Nail -- man in his mid twenties. He had a head of scarlet red hair, and his eyes perfectly complimented his hair, with them being a lovely red color as well. He wore a rather dashing white suit, with a light blue undershirt and a pink tie, with white loafers on his feet. He carried a small bag with him, including a change of more fitting clothes for the caves, a flute to perform with, and some water bottles. Gotta stay hydrated.

"My name is Oliver Abrams, and I am the Star Performer! Truly a delight to meet you all," he announced with a small curtsy. "Perhaps you've heard of me! I did host a grand concert for the town's funding and for charity, after all! If you attended, then great! You witnessed my lovely music and singing live. If not... well, your loss, haha. But I digress. While I am not the most experienced at spelunking, I do hope I will be of assistance in finding Miss Gardner. The sooner we find her, the better, in my eyes. In any case, good to meet you all! I imagine we'll get well acquainted." He flashed a grin and winked at the others before sitting back down.

"... I really shouldn't have worn this. White while going into those likely dirty caves? What were you thinking, Oliver, you bloody idiot... Ah well. No going back now, I suppose. At least I have a change of clothing..."

A woman, who looks like she's around her late 20s or early 30s, stands up to introduce herself. She seems to be of average height. Nothing about her really stood out, having short, black hair, and wearing comfortable clothes that would allow comfortable movement within the caves. The bag she was carrying seemed to contain changes of clothes and other things necessary for the expedition, although something curious was sticking out of it...a small shovel?

"Hi there, everyone!" She started, smiling at the group. "For those of you who don't know me: My name is Micah Yandell. I'm known as the Star Archaeologist. Some of you may know I have been interested in studying the very caves we'll be exploring today for a while now, although the circumstances are really unfortunate." Despite saying this, she sounds like she's excited about the situation.

"But it seems like we have got a really talented group here...for the most part, anyway, so I'm confident this expedition with go smoothly." She sat down again, waiting for the others to introduce themselves.

A younger looking man stayed seated for a while, flipping a coin over and over, looking down at the ground in front of his seat, which is where his backpack was. Before long, he stood up, took a quick glance at everyone else, and then raised his hand to give a little wave.

"Yo."

Image

The man had dark brown hair, some of it hiding behind his goggles, some of it tied up in a small ponytail, pretty much all of it was on his head, though. Much less could be said for the likes of Nail. He wore a white button down shirt, with the collar popped and buttoned down enough to reveal a large amount of what some might call man-cleavage. He also wore a light brown jacket, with a small emblem on the chest and left arm. His pants were mud-like in colour, lined with many pockets.

He adjusted his goggles with his gloved hands. "Name's Bennett. Bennett Rodarte. Like a few others, some of you've probably heard of me. Hell, I basically run the lost and found in this damned city." Bennett chuckles at that last bit. "Though if we're being formal and all that dumb junk, I'm the Star Bounty Hunter. Good at finding your lost friends and family, or missing heirlooms or whatever, but I can't help you find yourself."
"Though maybe some of the ladies and I could work a deal out over a glass of wine, eh? ...Though probably not that filthy one. ...Or the nerd. ...never tried'it with a robot either."

He flashes everyone a winning smile and continues on. "I guess I'm pretty much the best guy for the job here, from what I can tell. Though I can't say I'm a smelly, grimy cave expert, so maybe that's why we're all goin' together, huh? Well, we should keep our chins up. I'm sure we'll have a blast, or somethin'. Bet a few of you know how'da have some good fun. Otherwise I'm in for one hell of a mission." He goes to sit right back in his seat when he's done, leaning far back, legs crossed, and his arms stretched out, resting on the backs of the chairs on either side of him.

A man appearing in his 30's began to get up off the seat he was laying on opening his eyes looking quite irritable.
"Would you brat's all shut up? Ive got got a hangover and my heads ringing as it is." the man reached in his shirt pocket and grabbed what looked like a cigarette he put it in his mouth.

"One hell of a day you chose to be doing this, though I guess thats my own fault for expecting not being told to get down here on short notice." the man face angery at his current predicament. guess ill get this crap over with,

"Ah, well it looks like we're all doin' fine job of gettin' acquainted," said the voice of a cheerful woman who had been sitting quietly thus far. She bolted up from her seat and gave the group a thumbs up and a warm smile. It was immediately noticeable to the others that she was missing her left arm, with the wound being sealed off by a metallic "cap" of sorts.

"The name's Brandy Henn, Star Treasure Hunter, born n' raised in this here town. That bein' said, I'll have y'all know I've been all over this wacky planet we live on, and some other... interestin' places too," she said while rubbing the back of her head. "Never know where the wind's gonna take ya, I s'pose."

Brandy made eye contact with a couple of the others, though she was quick to break it with one of them in particular and pretended to adjust her belt. "I recognize some faces here," she said with an (almost) nervous grin, "and I'm gonna guess or at least hope the rest of y'all have seen me 'round town or have even stopped by the fancy impromptu museum I set up in my house."

She cleared her throat after shamelessly plugging her Museum of Terrifying(ly Amazing) Treasures and brushing her silky, blonde hair away from her single eye. "Heh, anyway, I'm sure we'll be able to get the job done faster than rabbits durin' matin' season. I have faith in us."

As she sat back down, she did another quick scan of the room and smiled at everyone.

"Though, I wish you'd watch your attitude, Charlie... teamwork makes the dream work, after all," Brandy quietly muttered to herself.

Following Brandy's introduction, the next person to introduce themselves stood up. It was a man, appearing to be in his late 20s or early 30s. He had messy brown hair and thick eyebrows. Behind his black framed glasses were a pair of brown eyes, the same shade as his hair. For his choice of clothes he was wearing a blue shirt and tie, beige pants, brown shoes, and a lab coat of all things. As well as his tie, there was a red lanyard around his neck, and a gold wedding band on his left ring finger. The man was clearly not dressed properly to explore a cave, but he didn't seem to let that bother him.

"Yo!" He said, greeting the others with a friendly wave and a smile on his face. "I see a few familiar faces around here, but for those of you who haven't met me before, let me introduce myself. I am Doctor Klifford Pratt, the Star Pediatrician. This expedition shouldn't be too long hopefully, but if any of you injure yourselves or need medical attention, let me know! I'll do everything I can to help you out!"

After he finishes his little speech Klifford rummages around in one of his pockets for a moment and pulls out a... sock? He then puts it on his hand. A closer look at it would reveal that it's a sock puppet of a snowman. "How's that for an icebreaker, huh?" He says, moving his hand to make the puppet appear like it's speaking. "I'd say it's pretty cool." He laughs at his own (bad) joke and sits back down, waiting for the introductions to finish.

One of the seats was not like the others; it was a wheelchair, and in it sat a young girl appearing to be in her late teens or early 20's. She had short, cotton-candy pink hair tied in a ponytail with a white ribbon, lapis lazuli eyes surrounded by round red-framed glasses, and wore a purple long-sleeved blouse, scarf, and navy blue blazer. She watched the introductions with a soft smile, silent aside from the nearly constant clicking of the typewriter sitting on a small table over her lap; her almost inhumanly fast fingers only halting long enough to remove and replace the sheet of paper currently residing within the writing machine.

Once she'd finished her work, she rolled herself up to each of the Star Citizens and handed them one of the identical letters she'd just typed with a polite nod.

Code:
To my fellow Star:

Greetings! Just in case you do not know who I am, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Shizune Takata, and I have been given the title of Star Typist. I work at Rattlewater Printers, where I write pamphlets, fliers, and so on. Please feel free to visit for any of your printing needs!

Like you, I have been asked by the mayor to join Miss Gardner's rescue operation. I will primarily be documenting the mission, as well as recording the layout of the caverns to the best of my ability.

During this expedition, I will communicate with you like this through my partner Claudia. I ask that you please show her the same respect as you would to me.

Let's worth together to find Miss Gardner soon and return home safely!

Sincerely yours,
Shizune Takata

Apparently 'Claudia' was the name of her typewriter.

A fierce, stern looking man stepped up to the others to introduce himself. He was deep in thought, attempting to articulate what to say to the glorious, talented people sitting by him. With such an honorable group, he wanted to make sure what he said was appropriate.

"We have gathered here today to rescue the one known as Enola Gardner...such a wonderful, talented lady who provides many contributions to our great city of Rattlewater must be rescued post-haste. It is an honor to sit here, amongst you all to join this operation."

He saluted and faced the others.

"If I am to acknowledge your presence, however, you must first acknowledge mine!"

Grabbing an abnormally tall baton from a holster on his back, he slammed it on the ground and took a mightily regal pose.

"I am Ivan Ivanov! Do not mock my name. My men and I protect this city and all that's good for it! It is clear to me..."

He gave a cocky smile.

"...with these talented folks, it will take us no longer than 4 hours to locate Miss Gardner! Yes, 4 hours should be plenty of time."

He slammed his baton on the ground once again.

"Sergeant! By my side!"

He seemed taken aback that his right-hand man hadn't appeared beside him right away.

"...I forgot that he is not with me. If you ask me, this is a matter that should have been handed to me and my men directly...who does the mayor think he is..? The Rattlewater Police Force is more than talented enough to take on this case! *I* was not police chief at the time..! Honestly...for me to usurp the former police chief at the ripe age of eighteen..."

He looked smug as he snickered at the thought. "I am truly a prodigy...but it is because of me that the police force of this great city is as powerful as it is. The Stonewall of Rattlewater...we move together as one!"

Shaking his head, he crossed his arms. "No matter. I do not mean to insult you all. Rattlewater is my pride and joy. I am honored to be amongst all of you, who have proved to the world that our city is glorious, strong, and proud. Mark my words, if you all follow my lead and stay by my side, we will find Miss Gardner."

"Now then, let us finish our greetings post-haste. This operation cannot be delayed any longer."

The silence was eventually pierced by the rumbling of something in the distance. It slowly got louder and louder until the noise could unmistakably be identified as a helicopter. The vehicle was sleek and large, branded by a Union Jack on the tail. Slowly it began to descend, perhaps a bit too close to the gathering area.

The helicopter threw up a whirlwind of dust and debris around it, hitting some of the passerby. People flew over in their chairs and tried to cover their eyes from the dust cloud. The noise of the machine was as obnoxious as its arrival, and the blades continued to spin for some time until they slowly stopped.

Two people exited the helicopter. A butch and tall woman built like a brick house and dressed in an officer’s uniform stepped out, roughly grabbing the arm of a smaller blonde man with her.

The blonde man looked to be in his very early twenties. It looked like he had only just recently showered, shaved, and gotten his hair cut. Besides that he seemed utterly average and unassuming. He was an average height, average build, and had a pretty unremarkable face aside from it looking a little young for him. He stared at the unexciting town with a small glint in his eyes. He took a deep breath of the air and smiled.

AHEM.” The woman grunted at him.

Jumping a bit, he reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a neatly folded piece of paper. He began to read from it.

“Greetings, everyone!” The man shouted much more loud and formally than he needed to. “My name is Benjamin Bledsoe! I was specially requested by the mayor himself to assist in this expedition in any way I could, and I intend to do so! He has even humbly designated me with a title recognizing my talent!”

… it seemed that was all Benjamin had to say. There was very little that anybody could tell about him from just that. It was hard to tell, but there was certainly something off about him. His accent was clearly British as well, so it didn’t even seem like he was from Rattlewater...

He began to put the paper back in his jacket but suddenly got jabbed by the end of a rifle from the woman.

“Ow!” Benjamin winced, grabbing his side. “Uhhh…” Benjamin’s eyes scanned the paper as he gave a sheepish grin at the office. “To those it may concern, I am currently serving an extensive sentence in prison. I was convicted for inaudible mumble, but I promise that I will be a productive member of this mission all the same. I hope that while I’m here I can learn all I can about Rattlewater’s customs and culture, and be treated fairly as an equal!"

The woman didn’t seem to notice anything off about Benjamin’s speech, or that he clearly didn’t start from where he had left off. She was too busy playing around with her phone, probably that bubble-busting game. When she saw he was done speaking, she pressed a button on her phone and spoke into it.

“Package delivered.”

“Return immediately, Beverly.” A voice could be heard on the other end.

The woman briefly went inside the helicopter, returning with a ball and chain. It was unclear how much it weighed, but it certainly didn’t look easy to carry even for this behemoth of a woman. She roughly pushed Benjamin in his chair as she snapped the latch around his left ankle.

“Ow ow ow, not so tight!” Benjamin pleaded to deaf ears.

Beverly gave a quick thumbs up to the others. “I wouldn’t worry about him. It’s to his benefit to be on his best behavior.” She questionably assured before returning to the helicopter. And then as quickly as it had arrived, it departed.

Benjamin winced as he examined the brace around his ankle, not looking at the others for now.

Spoiler: Prologue~ END
As everyone had finished their introductions, there was an awkward silence. People exchanged glances at each other and there were a particularly large number of stares directed in Benjamin's and Nail’s directions especially. Right then, the mayor happened to come back on stage.

“Ah, wonderful! I see you're all done introducing yourselves.” He gave a warm smile, not even perturbed by Benjamin’s presence. “Just in time, too! The bus is ready for all of you now, so you may go take your seats there. Be quick about it, too!” He pointed towards a bus nearby, with a crabby looking man in the driver’s seat. “Now, good luck!” He waved, getting off the stage, leaving everyone else looking quite nervous looking.

Gradually, though, everyone managed to get up and into the bus. It was quite small and cramped but was barely enough to fit everyone as well as their possessions inside. Lavender and Nail especially had trouble fitting in, but they managed to make it just as the bus started. The driver seemed quite grumpy and didn't tolerate any chatting amongst the crew, so the ride itself was mostly silent with most people just staring out of the windows instead, waiting for when they’d finally reach their destination. Little did they know, though, what was truly…

Beneath the Surface.

Spoiler: ???
There’s exceptional beauty to be found in bloodshed.

The outcast pondered this as they rested their head against the cavern wall. Trails of bright crimson liquid flowed slowly down their outstretched hand, dripping rhythmically on the floor.

The idea was so comforting to the outcast that they smiled a little - a rare sight for the few that knew them. They were trapped in a world of uncertainty, but at least pain was absolute.

It was the cleanest way to communicate, they thought. The shock and fear at the sight of a human losing blood was universal. No words were needed. No expression, nor body language. Even the stupidest sack of shit would understand.

That glorious red hue was the foundation of life, love, and loss. It was a shame no one could ever see it.

Eventually the outcast was awoken from their thoughts by a familiar voice. It was the dead boy, calling from a nearby tunnel.

“Hey, don’t worry. I’ve got your back,” he said delightedly, “Come on, live a little!”

Lantern light danced on the wall, showing the dead boy’s beckoning shadow. Without waiting up, he sprinted into the cave.

The outcast clenched their bloody hand. “Y-You fucking asshole…”

Most would think it unreal - some magical superstition. But the outcast always believed in fairy tales.

The blood on the floor was welcoming to tears.

Spoiler: Some time later...
After a while, the others finally felt the bus come to a halt. Slowly, they all got off, taking their things with them. The driver informed them in his usual irritable manner that he’d be leaving them here since the town “wasn't that far off” before taking off.

Now in front of everyone stood a large entrance to a tunnel leading downwards, surrounded with rocks. Since their objective seemed rather clear at this point, they decided to enter, the entrance being large enough to not pose a problem for anyone and with Shizune carefully wheeling herself in carefully. Thankfully, they didn't need to take out any of their torches yet as the sunlight illuminated their path for them mostly, leading all the way till what appeared to be a rather large crevice.

The crevice itself was rather large and daunting, and the end seemed barely in sight. There was a small rickety looking rope bridge in front of them that extended in front of them to the other side of the cave. It didn't seem particularly sturdy though, clearly incapable of supporting everyone’s weight together. Below the bridge was a rather large abyss that appeared almost bottomless.

Still, there didn't appear to be any alternate routes to take, meaning the bridge was clearly their only option and the only way to make any progress. Their main objective was clear- figure out a way to make it across to the other side. They were all free to discuss how to make it across now.

Benjamin awkwardly grunted as he held the ball, hefting it onto the earth beside him. "I'd mind the gap everyone." He held his hand out, wanting people to stand behind him as he peered down the abyss.

"Right then... this item," He kicked the iron ball lightly, "can't weigh more than 35 kilograms. That probably makes me the heaviest person here, therefore I should cross first?" It seemed his immediate focus was on their current objective rather than getting to know anyone.

Seb shrugged uncomfortably, before turning away from the beckoning ravine. "Let's not beat around the bush, I think there's a more obvious matter to address first. You, Shizune. Should you really be here?" he asked bluntly. "Not only are you lacking the mobility for cave exploring, you can't even properly communicate to us if anything goes wrong. Just a few meters in and we've already found a problem," he said, gesturing to the rickety bridge that a wheelchair would probably have difficulty with.

“I’m sure we all have a role to contribute here, Seb.” Benjamin flashed a quick smile. “It’ll be useful to have a log of our dialogues for the trip. If safety is a concern we can make sure she always has a buddy with her. The bridge is of course an issue, but could perhaps be solved if we carry her separately from the chair.”

"...I guess you're right," Seb conceded, looking aside not meeting Benjamin's eyes.

"We have some experts with us. Perhaps they can chip in regarding this bridge. So long as it can support two people at once I do not think there will be any issues."

Ciro nodded in agreement.

"I don't quite see the predicament here. We all go one at a time, and there shan't be any issue, no?"

“I suppose we could discuss what we do in the event of a collapse but... it may be best to just cross that bridge if we come to it.” Benjamin’s eyes flashed quickly to the doctor for acknowledgment or approval.

Daniel seems to have been inspecting the bridge for a few minutes, evidently thinking about something. He casually unslings a bag of tents from his back and puts it down, at a fair distance from the abyss.

"There's no use in thinking about collapse right now, kid. I'm sure we can make it across, but it's gotta be one at a time. What I think should happen is that the heaviest go first, then the lightest. Of course, the wheelchair's gonna be a pain in the ass to bring across for the scrawny ones. The heaviest will need to go one at a time, then the lightest can go two at a time. One of the lightest will also need to bring that bag of tents over."

He turns to the rest, crossing his arms with the megaphone still in his right hand. "Does anyone object to this?"

Matt took the time to look at the bridge carefully.

"Just let the dumb criminal go first, no skin off my bones when the bridge breaks and the cripple wont fair much better since that wheelchair looks like it will put the bridge over the limit not to mention anyone else carrying would suffer the same issue carrying it."

"Id say just send someone light over first and see if they might be able to find something to better secure the bridge, did any of you dumbasses bring any rope? cause I sure as hell didn't."

How cruel and painful that bus ride was.

Not only was their driver an asshole, but it was cramped the entire way! He had to scrunch down nearly three-fourths of his length just to barely fit under the roof of the thing. How insulting!

But Rattlewater was a small town, and very few people were his height. So he grinned and beared it, continuing to inspect his dossier on the way there.

"If I might make a suggestion?" Nail raised his hand politely. "An alternative strategy may be spending at least a few moments looking for hidden and non-obvious routes of tunnels and other cave-ins rather than entrust our lives to a straightforward cause. I'm certain any engineer, or indeed any single one of us, could notice, and have noticed, that this bridge is clearly unsafe to say the least. To use it in the hopes that it will not break, even if we were to send the heaviest person here, is folly, and is not worth the risk in my personal opinion."

"Hey, wait a minute, wait a minute." Charlie jabbed a finger in Benjamin's direction. "You're not seriously considering crossing with an extra 35 kilos around your ankle, are you? Did you forget your brain back in jail? Lemme look at that thing."

She crouched down next to him, grabbing his ankle to take a look at the latch.

The sunlight illuminates everything on the side the crew is on. It's quite clear there are no other alternatives across the ravine other than the bridge itself.

The iron ball itself is latched on quite tightly to Benjamin's leg. Charlie pulls on it but to no avail. It really can't be removed so easily.

"Ah, our first obstacle...Let us not worry too much about this." Lavender says in a reassuring tone. "If I may, I propose we cross the bridge in small groups of perhaps three or four, with the somewhat...heavier members such as myself crossing on our own."

The ballerina turns mechanically to her fellow Star Citizens. "Would you all agree? Oh, and I can carry some bags if you like, my body does not tire as easily as yours do...Ah, and I do not mean to say that your bodies are weak! I am actually quite fasvinated by the mysterious nature of the human form."

"Where's the lock?!" frustrated, Charlie tugged on the chain a few times, in a last ditch effort to tear it off with brute force.

She is unsuccessful.

"... This is bullshit. We got a chick on a wheelchair and this guy to babysit now?" she got up and dusted herself off, huffing.

"You mustn't see things in such a pessimistic light, Miss Church." Lavender says to the Community Benefactor. "Miss Takata and Mister Bledsoe can still be useful to us on our journey. You use the term "babysit", and yet I see no "babies" we need to "sit". Therefore, your argument is unfortunately invalid, as we are all adults here." The automaton states, proud of her fresh deduction.

Klifford smiles hearing Benjamin’s pun.

“Carrying Shizune across separately sounds like a good idea to me.” He says, agreeing with him. “And I don’t mind being her ‘buddy’ as long as it’s okay with her.”

"The bridge can probably hold two people max, if we're conservative," Seb opined, abruptly walking right out onto the rickety crossing and lightly bouncing it under his feet. "Though heavier people should cross separately. The metal ball weighs less than a person, so Benjamin will likely be fine if he crosses by himself."

With that, he began making his way across by himself without waiting for a response. Hopefully the bridge didn't collapse as he did so.

"Wait, Sebastian, we should wai-- aaaand he's already on the bridge," Oliver sighed. He watched as the cleaner crossed the bridge. "Oh, he made it! Perhaps the bridge isn't nearly as rickety as it seems? ... Granted, it still looks as if it's ready to collapse at any given moment..."

"... How truly anticlimatic."

If all it took to surmount this minor obstacle was a janitor, it truly would take no time at all for the group to find Enola Gardner.

With that taken into consideration, provided no one else was currently crossing, he took the opportunity to cross, his long legs swiftly eating up the distance between the ends.

Nail makes it to the end as well. Thankfully, his thinness makes up for his height and it doesn't appear to have affected the bridge adversely at all.
