Violet looks in the first and last pages of the weird book Basil read earlier for a title and acknowledgements and the like.

In the first pages, which Basil had originally skipped through, has a dedication:

To my family,

That your story will be remembered throughout eternity.

* * *

To the Golden Witch,

Without you, I would have nothing,

With you, I am nothing,

For this I am forever grateful.

Twilip leans onto a the arm of a nearby chair and takes of sip of her wineglass. "Bits and pieces I guess. They used to live here or something like that and then some ancestor or another... Killed them maybe? Always thought they were just made up to keep us away from areas of the island where we could go missing."

Zachary had simply been enjoying Robin's company for a few minutes. Despite that black book just being a 'story,' it really had felt like Zach had lost her for a couple days. But then he started to realize that if all he did was think about his wife, he wouldn't get anywhere, whether it be finding some mythical 'witches,' learning more about people, or even fulfilling his own dreams.

"Dear, I . . . that story taught me something. You're the most important thing to me, but . . . I think I've been making you the only important thing to me, and you shouldn't have to bear that burden," he explained.

"Maybe it wasn't Mama who wrote it, but one of her ancestors?" Zach posited across the room towards the people re4ading the witchcraft book like a true gentleman.

"Maybe..." Asher mused, trying to get a good look at the words and decipher their meaning.

"Without the Golden Witch, they would have nothing... Did they take out a loan from this Golden Witch or something?" he half-jokingly asked. "And with them, THEY are nothing. Hmm..."

The book from the Library with the runes is written by someone named Fennel Schumate, looks like it was written a few hundred years ago, and was never officially published.

The talk of ancestors got Vincent thinking. He paused playing the guitar to ponder over things for a bit.

"Actually, you guys got me thinking about this Forsythia person with the talk of ancestors... And I think that it's possible that Forsythia fellow is one of our ancestors. I mean, why else would the name be mentioned if there's no one in our family with that name?" Vincent asked the others.

Archer, who was standing around and pouring tea or something, nodded at Vincent's idea.

"That sounds likely. Although, I believe it may be incredibly hard for us to confirm that... However, if she was a Moonview, then she deserves some of our respect, does she not?"

"If I remember rightly... The letter talked about this 'Forsythia' invading the Moonview forest, which was apparently originally home to witches. Mother always did say we were descended from witch-hunters, it stands to reason that Forsythia was the original," Bertram said. "Forsythia gained great wealth from her conquest, which the witches cursed... thus, the strange things mother talked about in her will. It's all just a ridiculous story, of course," he concluded with a shrug. "After all, if Forsythia lived so long ago, why did anyone write such a letter so recently? I believe the paper it was written on came from this mansion, after all. It was likely written by mother, just like the story Basil found."

"Zach, that's... Um." She gave him a tired smile. "That's great to hear. Kind of - a surprise, I guess, but still. Good."

She rubbed the back of her neck. This was a little awkward. Between the story and her -- what? Memories? Odd dreams? Some of both? -- she couldn't really think of anything else. Robin really needed to clear her head.

"I'm going to go for a walk, love," she said, and she stood and placed a hand on Zach's shoulder. "Maybe check up on Jackie if I can find her." She gave him a quick kiss goodbye before she left.

"...From what I can remember, it sounded like this so-called Miss Forsythia wrongfully entered a land that wasn't hers, before proceeding to colonize and plunder a group of so-called magic witches for their own personal gain."

Briggs took another puff from his cigarette. "Sounds like something a Moonview would do."

"Oh! Um, okay," Zach replied, a bit surprised, but also somewhat relieved that Robin took the initiative. After she left, he decided he'd go for his own walk. There was something he had to check.

His walk wasn't listless; he headed straight for where he remembered the master bedroom was and attempted to enter and investigate.

[THEME MUSIC]

Zachary goes through the bedroom and finds the manila envelope, which is filled with documents from a private detective agency. It looks like its been opened recently and is filled with papers from a few months ago.

The papers all concern a "William Moonview." Going back through the documents shows that the private detective agency has been paid a good sum of money to track him down with just a name and an orphanage to go off of.

Littered across Gloria's desk are pictures of her, Peregrine, and the kids from a long time ago.

Zachary returned to the library with his findings after a slight delay spent reminiscing over the old family photos.

"Um, Mister Archer, Bertram, I think you should take a look at these," Zachary announced, holding out the manila envelope to whoever would take it, "I r-recalled something I found in the story and wanted to see if it was still there - and it was."

“But only because you asked. You should thank him, Briggs. Otherwise you might be missing an ear.”

Archer then turned over to face Zachary. “Oh? What could that be, Sir Zachary?”

Zach allowed Archer to take the envelope from him if he so chose to.

"Apparently, Mama paid a good chunk of money to have our mystery guest - and one-third beneficiary - 'William' tracked down. I've no idea how she even got the name or the place to start, but it's all there in the file."

Archer takes the envelope, looking surprised. He nods.

"Very well then. I believe this is something best saved for tomorrow. It's very late. Have a good night, Master Zachary."

The gentle night rain envelops the house in a hug. After a tiresome and emotional day, everyone feels a little bit closer to one another. Even Briggs, I suppose, but not as much as everyone else.

* * *

[THEME MUSIC]

The entire house save for a single light is stewing in inky blackness. It's a little past midnight now.

Archer goes back to the servants quarters after all of the guests have been attended to upstairs. There, Allister and Briggs are already asleep in their bunks. He places the private investigation envelope in a drawer in his personal storage cabinet. He goes and climbs over to his little bed and lays down, wrapping himself in a warm sheet, protecting himself from the cool night air. He reaches to the lamp and turns it off.

Settling in, he closes his eyes...

Some time later, he can hear someone calling for him from outside the servant's room.

He opens his eyes, his focus hazy and unsure.

He takes the sheet off and stands up, bobbing around, not checking if Allister or Briggs are still there.

He goes over to the door, ready to help.

...

The First Twilight

[THEME MUSIC]

Twilip's eyes open. The little alarm clock next to her in the guest bedroom reads that it is still five in the morning.

Has she slept at all? No, of course not. Every part of her believes that somethings gone terribly wrong.

She stumbles to her feet, pulled by something deep in her will. Maybe it's her, or maybe it's something else.

Her eyes adjust to the darkness, using the faint light of the digital clock to make her way out of her bedroom and out into the hall.

At the top of the stairs, she glances down into the main hall.

There, in the darkness, someone watches her from the floor.

In her panic, her breath catches, and she can't even shout for help before it's too late.

* * *

[SCENE THEME]

A loud crash can be heard throughout the house. Those awake and those asleep all hear it.

Doors fly open from throughout upstairs, and a stampede of thuds can be heard from overhead.

When they get to the staircase and glance over the side, their hearts stop. Somebody helpfully flips the lights on.

A huge bloodstain sits on the floor of the hall, a bloody trail leads out from it, almost fifteen feet away from it.

At the end of that trail, her blond hair framing her haunting smiling face and red streaming from her forehead, is Twilip Moonview. She's laying on the ground, completely dead except for that smile.

Sitting in a chair, blocking the main doors, watching everyone at the top of the stairs with eerie, dead eyes. Is Archer, a wry smile on his lips.

The sixteen look to each other...

The nightmare is happening...

It's raining hard...

There's no escape.

Asher gagged a bit at the sight of the corpses and immediately turned away, his face contorted in a look of "trying to not throw up".

"Wh-What... What the hell?!" he sputtered out. "Archer and Aunt Twilip... What crazy bastard..."

He looked back at the corpses, cringing a bit as he saw those eerie smiles plastered on their dead faces.

"... I'm going to... to look at them. See how they died... We'll catch who did this..." he muttered, approaching the bodies. He kept a careful eye on the area around him, along with the ground -- he was scanning for any magic circles like the ones they found in the book earlier.

Robin's wide eyes darted from Twilip to Archer, back and forth, in silent shock. She was breathing fast and deeply, but it seemed there still wasn't enough air. Shakily, she made her way to Archer and reached for him. His wrist was cold. She found no pulse.

She backed into the wall, hard, and slid down to a squatting position. Her hands came up to cover her head as she hyperventilated.

Lucine wobblingly approached Archer's corpse. "... He's happy..." she muttered, looking rather unconvinced.

"... He's smiling, so he's happy. He's definitely happy," she continued, choking down a sob. "and I don't have to be sad, because he's happy."

What she didn't choke down were the tears streaming down her face now, which she tried to wipe away as quickly as she could. "... Stop stop stop, stop crying, stop feeling like that..."

"Oh god... Archer and cousin Twilip... Why...?" Vincent said, eyes wide open in shock. He shakes his head and observes the crime scene from where he was.

"Huh... That's strange." The musician commented as he turns to the others. "The number of dead people we're seeing right now... It's different from the part in the story that we read."

The scene at the bottom of the stairs sent shockwaves through Zachary's brain. Flashing through his mind were the faces of the story's victims, most also smiling increasingly wide, strained grins.

Robin. Briggs. Billy. Violet. Basil. Asher. Jackie. Vincent. Lucine. Mickey. Archer. Wyn. Maurice. Allister. And now, in this real world, his big sister Twilip and the head butler, Archer . . . the one to whom he'd given the envelope. The envelope! No - that didn't matter right now. His gaze darted around for the person he cared for most, and he found her, sliding down against a wall. His breath was quickening. He would've normally fainted, but for some reason the memories of the dead bodies from before dulled his initial reaction.

"Robin!" Zach shouted as he ran over to her, knelt down beside her, and hugged her. "I'm here, dear, and - and thankfully, so are you . . . ." All he could think to do was try to hug her. Let someone else be the heroic investigator this time.

Jacqueline came to an icy halt as she saw the gruesome sight, immediately clasping a hand over her red lips. She couldn't believe it . . . she couldn't believe what she was witnessing. Oh Archer . . . Oh Twilip. She hadn't known them like the back of her hand but . . . they were still family. She still cared for them. She took a very very deep breath, closing her eyes as she gulped down the urge to shutter out a surprised gasp. "Both of you . . . so . . . s-so close to my grasp . . . I-I could have . . . I wish I . . . I could . . ." She shook her head, brushing her very long red hair out of her face. "N-no. Now is not the time to wallow in what could have happened. The present is consequence of the past. A book written in permanent ink cannot be re-written." She spoke to herself, nodding along with the self encouragement. Right. It was not the time to be pessimistic.

Upon seeing her daughter begin to cry over the current deaths, Jacqueline found herself moving without thinking. She walked closer to the small girl, before kneeling down in front of her to reach her level. "Lucine . . . my little butterfly." She spoke softly, reaching to wipe away the girl's tears with her thumbs. "It is okay to cry. Let those emotions out . . . To mourn for those who have died is never a sin. It's okay, my darling. It's okay . . ." She'd kiss Lucine's forehead followed with a caring smile.

She'd most definitely go tend to Robin in a moment. Hopefully for now, Zachary could help her.

"... I wish I knew," Asher said, kneeling down a bit to be at Allister's eye level. He winced a bit, but used his cane to steady himself. "Your father didn't deserve this, and you didn't deserve to lose him. Twilip... didn't deserve it either. But I promise you that we'll find the bastard that did this."

He turned to Archer's corpse to examine it, trembling just a faint bit, though he turned back to Allister one last time.

"... Try... try to look away. You shouldn't have to see him like this."

Thankfully, Briggs came in and shielded him from the haunting sight, and Asher went back to examining Archer's corpse for any injuries and stuff around it. After that, he'd investigate Twilip's corpse.

Those who cry are not weak, darling! It's a very strong thing to show emotion! You, my sweet, are the strongest little girl I have ever been gifted to know!" She herself began to cry. Seeing the sight of her daughter trying to contain these emotions and deny them tore at her heart and ripped it into shreds.
