Okay, we already have a thread about favorite video games, but what about your top 10 video game let-downs?
Note that this doesn't mean the worst games played, it's about the dissapointment value of it, which isn't he same thing.
I'll start out. Feel free to disagree with me.
10) Half-Life 2Now don't get me wrong, Half-Life 2 is an amazing game - just not amazing enough. I've never ever been so hyped up over a game. The entire game looked out to be not only the best game ever made, and even better than the original, but it was supposed to be the best game ever made BY FAR. It was an extraordenary dissapointment to see how they cut out some of the wonderful features I had looked forward to, even if it was for a good reason, and that while the game did maintain a good grasp of the spirit of the original, it certainly wasn't better than it. It was clearly the dissapontment of the year, but it was also the game of the year. As such, it doesn't deserve to go lower than 10th place. Oh, and for the record, there's quite a few mods that I thought would be very nice that ended up being 'meh'. Like Insect Infestation, and a few others.
9) Sonic seriesNever having owned a sega (I had all the games I needed with the NES, and no video game commercials in Denmark at all means I never found out that there were other consoles worth getting) I have never played Sonic. But after hearing about it, I decided it might just be worth trying out. So I find a version of it, and... it was boring, to say the least. You just curl up into a ball and fly through the level. I really think this was too hard to do, so I just walked through the levels instead for the most part. It was just too weird for me to fly through the map like that. Anyway, I find the boss at the end of the stage.... and I can't beat him. Sure, I think I beat him once, but I already lost interest in the game by then. I try out another version, in hopes of it being better, but it's the exact same game. What...? Why? That makes no sence! Well, I never liked the games, and the only one I think was average was some 3d-platformer I saw played in a mall. It was quite dissapointing, really.
8) Breath of Fire: Dragon QuerterOkay, it turns out it is an okay game, but that is only after you've played it at least once. Capcom made some odd decisions on this game. I kind of thought that D-coutner thing was too stupid. Simply because I don't like to waste stuff like that. Which made the game pretty damn hard. Why? Because I have no options to level up. Monsters dissapear after being killed once - never to return. Why, that's not fair at all! Also, why do I have to restart the game to progress? That makes no sence to me. And why is turning into a full dragon bad?! Breath of Fire is ALL about turning into a dragon! That's dissapointing! I like the game overall, but the vast ammount of odd decisions they made really ruined a large part of it. Okay, so it's in a future setting, I thought that was okay. But nina being a vacuum-cleaner, and only having 4 characters, 1 which is only available at the begining, went ageanst the spirit of BoF, IMO.
7) Playstation 3Oh, well, it IS a video game related dissapointment, isn't it? I don't like the PS3. Why did they decide to do everything they did? Sony screwed up big time, and the console isn't really worth getting as it stands. Which is pretty dissapointing since I wanted to stick with the playstations due to all the games. Anyway, Wii it is. Another thing that bothers me, not only with the PS3 but ALSO with the PSP is that there are games only available for those. Here I'm thinking especially on the two megaman games. HUH?! WHY?! This issue is also annoying with the gamecube games that never went on the PS2, like Wind Waker, another megaman game, and a few other games that have been talked about especially here that I previously havn't heard about. Symphonia-something?
6) Dragon FableOkay, an online game. Lots of banners for this one, so I decided to try it out. I love dragons, so this should be awesome, right? Well, no. First of all, calling it a free online mass multiplayer game would be misnormer. First, only approx. 50% of the game is free. For the other half, you need to buy a 'Dragon Medalion' or something. The other 50% of the game is almost purely avertisment. Okay, so it's pretty fun when you start playing it, but you run into all kinds of dead ends where you need to pay to continue. Not only that, but half the weapons you recieve in the game needs this as well. I think the difficulty is okay (beside a single area where you have to defeat 3 fire elementals), but the ammount of stuff you can't do without paying for it is redicolous. I mean, you can barely interact with your dragon without it. Also, you never actually MEET other players in the game, only in a small multiplayer stadium. But I guess that's okay. Another problem I faced was that not only do you need this Medalion thing, but you ALSO need something called DRAGON COINS! What is that, you ask? Well, in order to BUY some stuff, you might not need a medalion to use it, but you need to pay for them using REAL MONEY! NOOOOOOOO! STOP TRYING TO LURE MONEY OUT OF ME! And you have additional features if you have payed money in their OTHER game, Adventure Quest! WTF?! I JUST WANT TO PLAY A FREE GAME ABOUT DRAGONS, IS THAT SO MUCH TO ASK? And why did they decide to go make pirate stuff now! That has nothing to do with dragons! Geez!
5) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For AllSorry, but... AA2 is clearly the worst of the 3 Phoenix Wright games. Really! I don't like it! The music quality is scratchy, the addition of the magatama only really works out in AA3, the difficulty is extreme, the localisation destroys most of the characters, some game elements are only explainable if you 1) live in america, 2) know that in england cars are inverted, the vast majority of the characters are annoying and only very few stand out as being actual cool characters, and the majoirty of THOSE are from the first game! It was a very big let-down. T&T is awesome beyond imagination, but Justice For All can't even begin to compare with the other games in the series. Well, the last case got close, but considering I hate Adrian and Franziska above just about any other AA character in the series (apart from perhaps Morgan who - gasp - is also a JFA character), it was wrecked. Even when all Justice For All cameos in T&T works out perfectly, they sucked in AA2.
4) Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2047 (or whatever)Okay, I liked the original battlefield. Why? Because of the singleplayer campaigns! WHY DID THEY REMOVE THIS?! What a terrible idea! I was looking forward to playing through scenarios that progress the story, and that I can alter it depending on which side I play. But no! Single-player turned into a bot-fest! WHY?! Horrible decision! I don't really like the multi-playerism in Battlefield that much, and I enjoyed playing ageanst the computer. But why did they remove the storyline AND have so few maps?! What a waste! And that future Battlefield game? Awesome enough concept, I liked the environments and everything... BUT SAME THING! Multiplayer-only or bots! And that's not all! Playing multiplayer and doing kills earned you access to new weapons, etc.! WHAT!? So you mean that because I'm new and I don't like to play multi-player I get PUNISHED?! Who thought up that idea? Seriously. Who thought up that? I'd like to shoot him. I also was lured into buying a mouse-pad and expensive headphones along with my copy of the last game, and I've used neither of them, because they suck. Grrrr!
3) Warcraft IIII don't like WC3. Why? Heroes. Yes. In WC2, the game was pretty good, I think. I liked the general idea behind it. Which means, of course, that I bought the sequel. What a change of pace. The entire game was basicly focused on heroes. Why?! It really ruined the thing for me. If I wanted to spend most of my time upgrading a hero-charracter, I'd go play a RPG. I spend so much time on the hero that I had extreme problems with controling the rest of the base and everything, and doing scermishes, and multiplayer playing, I always lost because it made more sence to focus on building a base instead of training a hero. Of course, I suck at these kind of games, and always have. But WC3 really was a big dissapointment.
2) Command and Conquer: GeneralsI've heard of it, and decided to go buy it. I even bought a package which included an expensions pack. Having just played C&C: Tiberian Sun, which I think is pretty good, I had high expectations, since it was also apperently populair. Okay, it sucked for me. What a dissapointment! I never got past the third level of either of the three campagnes! I know I'm not good at RTS games, but give me a break! It wasn't only hard, but I hated the graphical design. I had thought it was a nice looking game, but no. It was cartoony, and a BIG downgrade from Tiberan Sun. It was really lousy... And I still have no idea how I can possible pass anything in the game.
1) EarthboundI heard of this game, and decided it might be worth checking out. I shouldn't have done that, it turned out. While the game started out nice enough, it got tedious really fast. It took too long to find out where to go after you LEAVE YOUR HOUSE for crying out loud, and it took unreasonably long to climb the hill/mountain. I do say that the fly thing was quite funny and epic enough, and it was apperently supposed to set the standard of the rest of the game. But that was it - it was the highlight of the game. I laughed when it got squashed like it did, heheh, but I think that's just about the only time I actually laughed in this game. Okay, you continue on into the next town. I'm apperently supposed to beat up the boss of a youth crime group, allright. That's like team rocket, sure. But unlike team rocket, this turned out to be so unreasonably unfair. I died - ehm - 15 times, I think. Too hard. Way too hard. Now don't get me wrong, I don't really think there's anything WRONG in having a game being hard, as long is it's reasonable. But here, it's not. It is the first 'real' boss fight, but its difficulty would make me think more at the likes of a endboss. Anyway, when I FINALLY managed to beat him, he get's out this... robot... and murders me. And then I have to go level up all over again. Here, the game broke. It was tedious, way too tedious. It was no longer fun. If there were any jokes I stumpled upon after this point, it was just annoying. It really ruined my experience with the game. Moving on, as I did, I was supposed to enter this cave. I did this. Now, how can mice and I don't know what, be so HARD?! I mean, I'm moving through a dungeon and I could barely get past the first few monster encounters! It was horrible! And then I have to go to a new town afterwards, sure, but what do I find out?! Oh, first of all I have no idea where to go. I go follow that girl that got kidnapped but get stuck. How unfair is that?! It took me ages to get past the first couple of UFOs in my way, and then I can't even move forward! It was only thanks to Wooster that I finally managed to figure out this extremely annoying and pointless 'quest' involving the apple kid and I don't know what else. I hate this part with a passion. And it doesn't get better when I get killed by random people that jump on my in town! Give me a break, dammit! I can barely leave the hotel without getting killed, and guess what? Then I have to move BACK IN! That's a never ending circle! And then when I finally do get past that pencil-block thing, and get past this redicoulously hard stage and get to the next town, I get killed before I can find the INN, which is of course camoflaged with no sign in front of it! And I have to start all over again, and guess what, I never managed to get to that town again! I've never been so traumatized by a game before this. Why is this game so hard?! Why is it so hard to even walk arround town?! I wanted to try this game agean because I just have HAD to have done something wrong.... but I can't. I just can't play this again. I'm almost crying when I'm writing this. I think of Earthobund when I watched Angry Video Game Nerd's Karate Kid review, it's the same thing. The game is with no doubt the most horrible experience I've ever had with a video game. AND EVERYONE KEEPS SAYING THAT IT'S AWESOME, WHICH JUST MAKES IT THAT MUCH WORSE.
