There are excellent guilds on the internet - many assume you know how to use the pen tool, but there are a handful that do teach from scratch. They usually come with screenshots, handy red arrows and the like. http://www.vexels.net/tutorials.php is a minor archive, but googling should give you more.

I work with vector graphics and can assist/coach you should you have specific questions :)

There are really cheap ways to do that without effort, but.. the results are terrible in comparison, and they won't capture layer over layer. Almost 100% of professional vector art is made from scratch by setting anchors, then shaping the curves, layer for layer. I've learned about vector graphics almost entirely from tutorials and can only recommend them.

http://www.heathrowe.com/tuts/vector.asp is for Photoshop, but you can pick up some of the pen tool basics from it
http://adroit-designs.deviantart.com/ar ... l-24762812 is a tutorial written in Flash that has a lot of basics you'll find useful
http://tikideputy.deviantart.com/art/ve ... r-21872599 is a good overall tutorial and puts a bit of emphasis on the pencil tool for 'drawing' vectors

I gotta run now so this is a bit of a rushed post, but I can tell you that tutorials are made for a reason, and while I didn't fancy following them so much at first either, they're very useful. Reading up on vectors in general to understand how they work and what the difference between pixel and vector images is will definitely help you, too
