Criminal cases in Japan were handled by Bench Trails for years but they are planning to switch to Trial by Jury in 2009 so they had to change it to make it look more realistic. But don't worry about 
, I'm sure that the Jury will stay quiet, at the end hand him a piece of paper and he will annouce the verdict. Only real difference at the end maybe that when he adjoruns he'll also say "The Jury is dismissed with the thanks of the court."

Indeed, just because most of the old cast haven't appeared doesn't mean they're out of the story completly. They've all got their own lives to lead outside of Phoenix's adventures, after all.
Plus, who's to say closer people like Maya and Edgeworth weren't involved in Phoenix's plight offscreen? It's hard to believe Phoenix wouldn't ask for help considering the situation he ended up in.
