The World Ends With You, an RPG for the DS from Square that's somewhat like Kingdom Hearts without all the weird Disney stuff (perfect!). I honestly don't know much about the story (It's set in Tokyo, though), it's kind of.. weird.. as you can imagine from the title. It's coming out on A(censor)pril 22nd, and it has some interesting combat system where there's stuff happening on both screens of the DS, two battles at once carried out by two different characters. Nintendo Power says the bottom screen is stylus controlled and the top is d-pad controlled, I don't have any idea how that will work out but it sounds pretty interesting. The screenshots suggest the top screen might be a rhythm "hit the buttons in this pattern" kind of thing, but I can't say for sure. I've never played a KH game, by the way, so the only connection I can make is the art style seems kind of similar.

Has anyone heard of this game before?

Wasn't this the game that was banned from the Wii (and put on DS) because it tried to actively teach kids about WWII instead of blowing up nazis?

lol, I'm not so sure about that xD

Well, I don't really agree that the game is reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts. The only reason most people think so is because of game's art style. It's very reflective of Nomura's integration of Shibuya influence into the characters. Somehow, it appeared slightly in the Kingdom Hearts character designs too. The game's system is really unique and a lot of people are looking forward to it. I know I shouldn't be biased towards games, but Squeenix has been below par for me lately. I really miss the PS 1 Squaresoft days TT u TT

No, that was Imagination is the Only Escape.

I have to say, I thought It's a Wonderful Life was a much better name than The World Ends With You. Man, this new one makes me think of exactly what I hate about Squeenix now (BELTZ 'N ZIPPAAAZZ). I probably won't come anywhere close to this game.

But then again, you can't really blame Square Enix. The Shibuya district in Japan is the main influence for this fashion sense. Honestly, people there really do dress like that. Maybe Square Enix is just trying to "go with the flow". Hahaha. On another not though, Nomura has been overusing that style of fashion in his characters... Though it is distinct, it sometimes makes no sense. At least in It's a Wonderful World, the setting actually is in Shibuya.

Yeah, the game is set in modern day Tokyo, the character's clothes do look like what I'd imagine people wearing in Shibuya (well, honestly I don't really know what people there wear but the character's clothes don't look too unrealistic).

Either way, just because you don't like the way the characters are dressed is no reason to miss out on a game that could turn out to be great. I'm not exactly in love with their clothing either but I'm not gonna skip the game because of it.

Replace Squeenix by Tetsuya Nomura, he's the only one over there that has a hard-on for those clothes.

I'm only picking this up for the gameplay, honestly.

I wasn't going to get this, but NP gave it a 9 of 10 and they're usually pretty good about that. It's pretty annoying how SquareEnix DS games always cost $10 more than other DS games, though. :yuusaku:

Aw... But Squaresoft released a few PS 1 games worth mentioning. Possibly though, it's because I grew up playing PS 1 instead of truly playing SNES.

It really looks like a good and interesting, but complicated, game.

I have a couple of friends who disliked Square in general and seem to take interest.

For anyone who cares Nintendo Power rated it a 9.

FF IX and Tactics were good, but FF IV, VI, Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3, and Chrono Trigger all trump them easily.

Well, I guess you see it that way because you played SNES first. I do agree that the Seiken Dansetsu series for the SNES was really amazing but people tend to overlook the strong points Legend of Mana has too. When you start getting into the three main story plots of that game, you just realize how intricate the story really is. Though it may sometimes throw at you really useless quests that do nothing more that humor, the main plot still really shines as something else. Not only that, but the game had an amazing soundtrack. I really loved how each piece managed to suit the towns well and bring out proper emotions in certain events.

Another game Squaresoft made that most SNES gamers disliked was Chrono Cross. So many Trigger fans were disappointed because they were looking forward to a sequel to Trigger, but instead they got a new cast of characters with rarely any connection to Marle, Crono and the group. Then again, putting that aside, Chrono Cross was a marvelous game in which I found the graphics to have been extremely polished. The story was intriguing and you just couldn't help but feel like you wanted to know more of what was going on. Not only that, but the soundtrack of that game was absolutely amazing. Chrono Cross was that game that made me fall in love with Yasunori Mitsuda's compositions. For me, it was one of those games that made you wish there was more once you get to the end. Honestly, no Final Fantasy game has made me feel that way > >;

Finally, Threads of Fate. Yes, the game was hardly monumental bordering more on humorous gameplay than seriousness but that's what makes it adorable. You couldn't help but smile at Mint's antics because for once, you actually get to play a heroine that wants "World Domination". That in itself is what makes the game absolutely refreshing. You get a lovable cast of characters and all-in-all, though it may seem kiddy, Threads of Fate has surely made its way to my heart~ : D

...No, I see it that way because I like Square's SNES games better. :nick-sweat:

Chrono Cross would have been better if it hadn't been a sequel to Chrono Trigger. I honestly haven't played Legend of Mana or Threads of Fate, but everyone I know who has the former has suggested not getting it... Most of my opinion on Square's PS games is admittedly based on the FF entries and a few other random selections (Cross, Parasite Eve, whatever that fighting game with the FF VII characters was called...)

It's not just the way that they're dressed, it's the character design itself. I think disliking a game's character design is a valid reason to not buy it, yeah?

But yeah, Square needs to go back to the days of Chrono games and FF games... before they got shitty. :V

Which is real freaking easy considering Tetsuya Nomura's the designer. Tons of zippers, tons of leather belts.

You have a zippery leather GOD.

The FF Tactics Advance sucked ass. The original, and the PSP remake, Lion Wars, is friggin' epic.

And FF8 was nice. It's my favorite FF game, followed by Tactics. ;_; Meanies.
