Think of Pharaoh, only set in Greek times. It's a nice historical city builder, with interesting new quirks such as friendly Gods who give you food or armed forces, and furious Gods who curse your town and kill your civilians.

I loved Zeus :redd: I played Pharaoh and Zeus non-stop when I was a kid. I found these cheats for Zeus, one made your archers shoot cows and one made you shoot fireballs wherever you clicked, but if you entered them in a certain order, you could shoot cows wherever you clicked. I had way too much fun with that... I might have to reinstall it now.

I don't know if it counts as 'obscure' or not, but speaking of reinstalling:

It's probably my favourite linear RPG of all time. Sometimes the cliches make you roll your eyes, but it's extremely well done. Plus all the music is done by Noriyuki Iwadare, who is like video game music God.

I played a few minutes of the third game and it wasn't that good (plus it got shitty reviews), but I haven't played the first game. Grandia I was apparently a cult hit or something to that effect... can anyone testify to this? I want to try it.

I just remembered another game that I absolutely adored:

Image

You play a crocodile who lives with these fuzzy cat-things called Gobbos. It's been forever since I've played it... that's all I really remember.

Erm I just beat Baten Kaitos a while ago (The first one, not Origins). Hmm... someone said that its battle system with cards is confusing, but it really isn't. The cards have numbers and you get bonuses that increase your damage for having pairs or straights...

Almost all the ones I like have been named:
Tales of Phantasia
Tales of Destiny
Star Ocean (SNES)
Cave Story
Yume Nikki
Baten Kaitos
Dewprism
Trace Memory

It took THREE replays to get the good ending! Why? Because one puzzle was so easy that I kept missing the absolutely necessary hint that was to be later mentioned in the end scene. That made me sad and pissed at the same time.

Anyway, games you people haven't mentioned:
Spoiler:
ImageImageImageImage
Live a Live - Play as different people in different scenarios, then throw 'em all together at the end.
Terranigma - typical save to world story... NOT. (better than it sounds. Really)
Treasure Hunter G - You have a boomerang-throwing, violin-playing, magic-casting monkey in your party. How can you NOT want to play this? (Minor plug: From the makers of Riviera, Yggdra Union, Baroque, and Evolution Worlds)
Baroque - This is actually a game you will either love or hate. It's a roguelike, which means randomly generated dungeons and you keep going through it until you die. Or get to the bottom. I like the story, but it's not worth it if you hate the genre.

Not too obscure but I absolutely love the Nancy Drew game series for the PC. They're really goo actually, and can are a lot more difficult/creepy than you'd think they would be. The older ones are better imo because with the new ones they've just been focusing on the graphics instead of the puzzles and gameplay. >:

Also, the Little Nemo and Bust a Move games were grrrreeeat! I pretty much love a lot of older games, I've still got my N64 and play it every now and then. There was also a game that I can't remember the name of, but you played as a kid and you used a yo-yo as a weapon. I'm pretty sure it was on the NES.

I'd say Boktai, but that barely counts because we got the first two games... not the third, but there are quite a few fans, and we did get Lunar knights. No, you want obscure, try Altered Destiny. This makes Boktai look popular. I don't know how many people played it when it came out, but now it's painful to look for help on this game because the number of people who know anything about it, not counting the people I've told of its existence, is probably in the single digits. And that's really crappy because I need help with what appears to be a glitch keeping me away from where I need to go!

Spoiler: My favorite obscure game(s) of all...
Image

The Power Instinct series. Atlus' own little underdog of a fighting game franchise. Yeah, I've said it a ton of times already, but sometimes it's hard to help... :x
It's underlyingly weird and I love it that way. Can you name any other fighting game where it has creepy evil grandmas that throw fanged dentures at you as an attack? You can't, can you? I didn't think so.
It could get fast and furious... I like the feel of that adrenaline rush when I play it. I wish it got more love, personally. Plus, the artwork for it was done by Range Murata, one of my personal favorite artists.

Also, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Capcom's fighting game attempt at it. It kicked ass. I love it. Everything about that game just reeked of coolness.

SNK's Fu'un series, Savage Reign and Kizuna Encounter. I definitely hope they are kind enough to release the Fu'un Super Combo here in the US, I wanna own it. D:

And I love Waku Waku 7. It's what I consider Sunsoft's best 2D fighting game. If you've never played it, you don't know what you're missing. That is, if you like fighting games and you don't mind the weirdness. :3

Seconding this. As a danmaku fan I thought CS2 would be decent enough, but the framerate was awful and the story was non-existent. I paid £10 for it and still felt cheated.

There's a very cool game that I played as a kid, and I'm sort of desperate to play it again. I totally wasn't old enough to understand anything that was going on when I played it the first time, I don't think I ever beat it. According to Wikipedia it was marketted as a kid's game, but contained a lot of mature content and 'grisly death scenes'.

Image
From what I remember, in Heart of Darkness you play a kid name Andy who's dog, Whiskey, disappears during a solar eclipse. Your hunt for Whiskey, with some help from Andy's imagination, leads you to the Darklands. You have to defeat all of the dark creatures, find Whiskey, and then find your way home. Beyond that, the only other thing I remember about it is that there's a flying red dude who introduces himself as Amigo Amigo, and he's probably a major character of some sort.

I forgot about that game! Loved it. Especially the cute/wacky wishes they had at the end of the game. (Slash, it's your own fault you're being chased by a mob of Fernandezes.)

Seriously though, it's got a great soundtrack, diverse characters, and a wacky bonus stage fighter. (When I first played it, I was like: wow. Sandbag (smash) has a cousin.)

Hmm... Well, three that come to mind for me would be Shenmue (Sorta.), Bushido Blade II, and Knuckles' Chaotix.

All rather fun games, but not exactly public knowledge. Of the three, Chaotix was the biggest surprise to me, considering I thought it'd be rather lame, but I was delighted to find otherwise. Pretty cool gameplay, some nice levels, and catchy-as-hell music for the win.

I started playing an Xbox game the other day...

Image
The first thing that caught my eye when I started playing it is that the art style is sort of similar to The World Ends With You (though it's all 3D cell-shaded). You play a member of a roller-blading street gang in a city where freedom of expression (graffiti) is banned, and you have to recruit new members to your gang while battling rival gangs and the police. I'm not very far into it, but from what I can gather it's like Tony Hawk on roller-blades, and you have to tag stuff. It probably doesn't have a lot going for it plot-wise, but it's very fun and very entertaining - and it has an awesome soundtrack.

it's a pretty obscure game. it was never (supposed to be) sold directly in stores but rather was marketed exclusively through nintendo's online store in january 2006. it sort of disappeared off the face of the planet until SSBB came around, and as far as i am aware the game is very hard to find, with several copies on ebay at the 50$ mark right now with 18 hours remaining.

(A lot of stuff from the D/P/P generation seems to take from it)

And Atlus hardly has obscure games. I know a lot of them are incredibly popular and are more than likely just not mentioned as much as among others. Golden Sun an obscure game? Pah.

Everyone knows what Galaga is, but what about...

Image

Which you can buy on Wii VC as

Image

It's an update to the original Galaga with more enemy types, the dimension warping system that allows you to access harder versions of levels, and the ability to upgrade a double ship to a triple. I have one complaint though: the VC version (which is the TG16 version) is too freaking easy (I got up to stage 20ish on my second try in a row).

I would like to draw everyone's attention to an awesome adventure game from the '90s, called "The Neverhood".

Image
Neverhood is entirely stop-motion claymation. You play Klaymen, who is trying to find out what happened to the Neverhood, and later must save Hoborg (the creator of the Neverhood) from the evil Klogg. The game has a huge story behind it (which is recorded on 38 screens in one of the hallways you walk through), and it's really quirky and entertaining. And, as with all of the games I've posted, the soundtrack is superb.

Splatterhouse. The dood look like a rip off of Jason but it a fun side scrolling beat-em ups. The monsters tend to die in 1-2 hits but the bosses ranges from easy to hard(especially lvl 3). The story is that you(Rick) and Jennifer are students researching some house that some crazy doc used to live in and did some odd experiments. Basically Jennifer get taken away and you get hauled off to some where on the island and you waken up with a mask on that gives you powers(I haven't really see this power though.) There about 5 games total in the series. The Main 3, Some odd ball one for the Famicom, and I guess a remake of the first one that coming to the PS3/360(wish it was on the wii since Splatterhouse 1 is on it) I know a place to get all 3 plus famicom one but I'm not sure if I can post it.

ToeJam and Earl -Same thing as before don't know if it counts now. It fun. running around trying to get pieces to rebuild your ship(think Pikmin just without any help beside yourself) I think it was hard in the past to fine since I remember renting one then renting it again to find out that I was playing the sequal instead of the first one.

The Misadventure of Tron Bonne(I wish I had gotten it in the past instead trying to get a mint/near mint copy for a low price) You basically trying to pay a dept from a loan made by Teisel from Mr. Loath which comes back to bite him in the butt when he get kidnapped. I wish there was a 2nd one that tells us how everyone met each other in MML2. Especially Glyde(If I talk about more on him it be a spoiler to the game)

Shadow of Destiny(Shadow of Memories)- one of my impulse buys which I think I was looking for another game when I found this instead at Bestbuy(did the same thing with Shadow Hearts at Ebgames). You basically trying to find who the killer of your own murder. I guess it obscured now. Though the back cover made it look like it was all in a castle type hotel instead of a town(or that could of just been me).

I think no one said what I said already.
