I'm getting it soon so I can lose all this unwanted weight...Like..Everywhere. Even though my doctor says I'm only about 20 pounds over the average for my height. I can only imagine.
Me: *Steps on weight board*
Game: MORBIDLY OBESE. GO EAT A SALAD.
Me: F*CK YOU TV YOU WEIGH MORE THAN ME. *Goes to do Yoga*

Though I think "fat" is a bit over it. Perhaps "overweight" would be more suitable.

I laughed so hard.

Okay, but... I donno, I really don't think it's that big of a deal-- as in, the father really didn't have to go all the way to the news and whine, but, hey, he's a dad, and his little girl is ten years old. Kids aren't the most rational thinkers...

And the fact that it's a fitness game in the first place... Isn't it just doing its job? :yuusaku:

Though I still can't help but feel bad for the little girl-- I mean, conclusion illogically reached or not, nobody needs self-confidence issues.

Meh, it's just BMI, which really isn't a good way to measure weight by, let alone the fluctuating growth in children. And really, in a world where everything from magazines and television to other children tell you that you're fat and should lose weight, suddenly blaming a video game that was made to help you stay healthy is just hypocritical.

After looking at the top of the box for Wii Fit, I'm really wondering what will happen when people above the weight limit of 330 pounds/160 kilograms try it.

Well, since the balance board is two scales put together, it can probably support more than 330 pounds. The readings in the game would just cap at the level someone at 330 would have.

On the topic of the girl there is a little thing in the manual:
On page 13 they wrote:
For players under 20 years of age:
  • BMI is a measurement typically used to asses fitness in adults, but Wii Fit was created so that players from ages 2-19 can get a BMI measurement as well. However, it is important to understand that there are differences in growth rates, it will affect your BMI, so please keep your User Settings (see page 12) up-to-date and make updates in the Edit Profile section regularly.
  • Users who are active bodybuilders or are very muscular will have a higher BMI because muscle weighs more than fat. This may result in inaccurate measurements.

She was an active girl, under the main age area the game was made for, and obviously didn't read that part of the manual.Image
These parents are blowing a simple thing out of the water! It wasn't even made for her age!
They complain that games make people fat, so Nintendo makes a game to help them become fit.
Then the people complain that the game is calling them fat! Make up your minds people!

I know I'm fat, that's why I got Wii Fit in the first place! I plan on getting fit, and this is my first step.
If you can't handle what the "game" tells you don't play it![/rant]

Well this is the first I've heard it doesn't work 100% for people age 2-19. Not many people "read" manuals and it might have been better to place the information on the box. (if it is, then ignore this sentence).

Maybe Nintendo should have used the 'overweight' instead of 'fat' but then people would still complain. :chinami:

I believe that Nintendo always has a little disclaimer of some sort stating to read the manual before playing the game. People are just stupid.

I honestly think that article is one of the most ridiculous pieces of crap I've ever read. And the father's being a bit of a hypocrite. "OMG my daughter was so embarrassed at being called fat HERE GO PUBLISH AN ARTICLE ABOUT IT!"

Actually the more I read this thing the stupider it sounds. "I'm absolutely aghast that children are being told they are fat." Children? What children? It was ONE girl. (Oh and guess what - some children ARE fat. *gasp* God forbid someone tells them that they are.) "BMI is far from perfect but with children it simply should not be used." Wtf? This is being used as an argument AGAINST the game? No one's forcing children to use it - if parents chose to not read the instructions and don't realize that it's not accurate for kids, sucks for them. It SAYS the game isn't accurate when it comes to kids. "...and now we have a game that tells them they're fat." OMG YA THEY MADE THIS NEW GAME CALLED WII FIT, KNOW WHAT IT DOES? IT TELLS KIDS THEY'RE FAT LOLOL ITS SO FUN!

If I sound bitter ... well I live in New Jersey where apparently 18 year olds in high school aren't mature enough to make their own decisions about what to eat, thanks to the new sugar laws which banned any type of good-tasting snack foods from schools. (But it's totally ok to sell 'low sugar' ice cream with 150% saturated fat! Not like fat had more calories per gram than sugar or anything.) I am sick of fat-kid-related issues.

Whatever happened to parents actually parenting?

I don't remember the others but I'll let you know what they are when I test today.

And I think it's stupid that people don't read the manual.
And the game itself said that it was designed for people 20 and over when I was setting up my profile!
So there was either a change when they released it over here or those people didn't pay attention. And I think it was probably the latter.

Edit:
I goofed, overweight isn't the top one. It goes like this,

Obese
Overweight
Normal
Underweight

With an extra one under Underweight: Nichole Richie.

It isn't that Wii Fit shouldn't be played by 10 year olds. Rather, the fact of the matter is that people shouldn't be overly sensitive to Wii Fit's calculation of your Body Mass Index based on the data you've given it. It isn't illegal to inform someone that, according to the ratio of their height and weight, they are within a certain weight category.

I find it much easier to complain that Wii Fit does not seem to understand the concept of being underweight. For example, if you fail to meet a weight "gain" goal, it will give you tips on eating less and choosing healthier foods as if you had failed to lose weight. I didn't gain 10 pounds, so I should cut back on snacks!?
