The Judge stood in front of the mirror in his office and began to comb his beard. Today was the beginning of his 100th trial, a big milestone made even bigger by the fact it would be his birthday in two days time. He hoped this case wouldn't last three days; it's not fun working on your birthday, espeically if you had to do it two years running. He straightened his robe and sat down on his chair. He had a summary of the case infront of him and he began to re-read it.

Case DN-8
Crime: Triple Homicide (At different times on the same day)
Victims: #1: Ian Transit (M): Lorry (Truck) Driver Aged 25. Involved in a traffic accident with the suspect a few days previously (No-one was injured, although the suspects car was written off)
#2: U-glee Starr (F): Fruit seller aged 19. Accidently sold a rotten pear to the suspect on the same day of the accident, which gave him gastroenternal distress
#3: Duda Sums (F): CEO of Accountancy firm aged 35. Argued with the suspect once during his lunch break on the day of the two other incidents.

Suspect: Hugh Didit (M): Accountant aged 30. DNA evidence of him was found with all three victims, but seems to have little motive for at least two of the murders.

Witness: Les Haulit (M), Lorry (truck) Driver aged 29. Saw Suspect enter the van and exit at time of murder.

Evidence list
Autopsy report 1: Ian Transit Murdered 13/6*. Approx. Time of death: 1 PM. Location of death: In the back of his Lorry (Truck) Cause of death: Struck with Blunt object
Autopsy Report 2: Murdered 13/6*. Approx. Time of death: 2 PM. Location of death: In one of the racks of fruit. Cause of death: Strangled with object
Autopsy Report 3: Murdered 13/6*. Approx. Time of death: 3 PM. Location of death: IT Room of Accountancy Firm Cause of death: Shot
Club: Traces of 1st victims blood on it, has fingerprints of suspect
Suspect's Tie: Traces of 2nd victims blood on it, has fingerprints of suspect
Revolver: Ballistic markings on bullet match the revolver, has fingerprints of suspect.
--------------------------------------------------
The case seemed pretty clear-cut to him, but he knew that often the defence would find a crucial piece of missed evidence and the case would swing right round. Thats why he had to keep on his toes and try to keep an open mind. But the law is the law, and since the law changed to Guilty until proven Innocent he had to follow it.... Even if he missed the old way of doing it. He got out of his seat and walked out of his office towards the courtroom; It was time for another trial to begin.

The defendant, Hugh Didit, had already been escorted to the courtroom by the bayliff.

Sighing into the Defendant's chair, Hugh glanced around the room that would host the attack on his emotions over the next few hours. He resigned to his fate and just held hope that Seth Elune would be able to find a way to bring justice to the situation.

Gumshoe poured himself a cup of coffee as he looked over the case once more before the trial. It was a very open and shut case, not much thought required it was easy to see that the defendant was guilty by his watch.

He stopped at the entrance to the courtroom and gave the bayliff a salute with the hand he had his coffee in. This cause the coffe tp spilt all over his jacket, "OW OW OW!" he yelled as he pulled of his jacket.

[Wednesday 21/06; 9:37 AM; Courtroom; Defense stand]

Lydia peered about looking just as confused as ever. Her elbows balancing her head which happened to be swinging from side to side due to being impatient. Hands cupping her chin, big silver eyes batting lashes a few times, She deffinately tended to be cute, but she wasn't here for that. She was getting bored, and when that happened, she tended to get out of professional mode.

"... Where's Seth?!" a pout came across her face as she began to speak. A hand leaving her chin to begin the finger tapping against the desk. her eyes rolled slightly. "At least the defendant is here..." she sighed, "this man has been doing this for a while, and I barely have--" she decided to stop rambling to herself.. the Jury was beginning to stare. She grew wide eyed, a hand spread above her mouth making a shocked look. "S-Sorry! I'm..just kinda nervous!" she giggled with a shakey hint to it.

At 9:40, Seth Elune entered the building. This was unaccording to his routine: normally, he would arrive at exactly 9:45, have a chat with his client until 9:55, enter the courtroom, and have the trial start at 10:00 sharp. However, today he was determined to speak with his client, and wanted to make sure he wouldn't miss him. He seemed to think that five minutes made all the difference. When he looked around, however, he saw Didit nowhere. At the information desk, he was told that Didit had already entered the courtroom. Seth grunted. He had been offered this case on an unusually late date, and he had been busy the previous days. Because of this, for the first time, he hadn't had the time to talk to his client. This made him feel unprepared. After all, for him, the most important thing to know beforehand was whether his client was innocent or not. He decided on fighting the prosecution for now, and judge his client as soon as possible.
Seth sighed. It really had been a last-minute case; he hadn't even met his aide yet. He only knew her name, and had seen a black-and-white photo of her, which didn't really help. He hoped she'd spot him, so he could at least talk to SOMEONE before the trial began.

Everyone who had never seen Seth in court, said he was a gentle and friendly man. That was quite true, but when in court, he seemed to be a completely different person. He fought for justice, which was why people admired him. There were also many who disapproved of him, though, and thought that he was arrogant, and that he should show more care for his client. Seth, however, took pride in what he did and would not change his ways. "I am who I am, and I can't be somebody else. That's it."

Ron Starwind looked up from the report he was reading as he approached the courthouse doors and inwardly groaned. Detective Gumshoe was flailing around after having spilled coffee on himself. Ron had wondered time and time again how in the world Gumshoe managed to hold on to his job after the numerous times he had messed up. He knew a big part of it was Dick was a good friend of Edgeworth, although he could never understand that friendship. With a sigh, Ron pushed his way into the court room returning his attention to the report in front of him. It was something that had been given him as he entered the courthouse, a new piece for him to use in the trial. He sighed as he finished reading, it was a big gamble to use something like this and it made him uneasy. But he was ordered to use it and so he would.

Seth heard that Lydia had also already gone to the courtroom. "Really, now," he said aloud. "Why is everyone in such a hurry today?"
He checked his watch. 9:50. Much too early to already be standing there, in his opinion. He was quite exact when it came to time: if a trial starts at 10:00, then that's the time you should be present, and not fifteen minutes earlier. But, seeing as this was already an unusual situation anyway, he decided to just go already. He approached the defence's bench, where a woman was standing impatiently. He noticed she was quite pretty.
"Hey. So, you're Lydia Vienne? Nice to meet you." He smiled. "Sorry for not contacting you earlier. I've been busy."

A sigh of Relief came from Lydia's mouth. "Oh... thank god..." she hit her head on the desk in relief. She was muttering thanks under her breath.

Finally, sitting up she looked over to Seth, "Good Morning, Mr. Elune" She smiled kindly and had then scootched in so it'd be easier for him to reach his area.

EDIT: Les Haulit waited in the lobby.
"Hmmm, I hope this goes pretty smoothly. I've got that Coca-cola shipment I've got to get down to Florida." Les thought.

"Ah well, only thing to do is testify quickly and accurately. I will NOT be late! I'm never late! I'm Les Haulit, hauler extraordinaire!"

Les realized he was standing up with his fist in the air, and people were staring at him.

"Ah, sorry 'bout that folks."

Gumshoe finally had gotten his jacket off and calmed down from the initial burns of the coffee; he also realized how many people passed by him as he was acting so ridiculous. He had often embarrassed the police force but he still thought he was a good detective but everyone else always said differently. He put his drenched jacket back on and entered the courtroom making sure to stay far in the back of the room. Seeing all of the people in their suits and all dressed up made him feel a little embarrassed and he lowered his head avoiding eye contact with anyone.

Seth blinked for a moment as Lydia hit her head on the desk, but then he laughed. "You know... you remind me of an aide I've had before, some time ago."
That was a long, long time ago...
At that moment, he saw a crouched man in the corner of the courtroom, in his shirt.
"And just who might that be? He looks a lot like..." He paused for a moment, thinking. He then shook his head. "...like someone who doesn't belong in a courtroom."

(NB: Gumshoe, we're doing a full text RP. That means making it like a story, not a script. Could you edit your post and add more to it? (Thanks Gumshoe ^_^) Oh, and FabuVinney, We're doing this in the past tense. Could ya sort that out too please? Godot )

The judge walked into the courtroom and sat down on his seat. He could see the defendant squirming in the dock and Detective Gumshoe sitting in a corner trying to stop people from noticing him. The Defence team were having a friendly chat and the Prosecutor was reading a report infront of him. He called Mr. Starwind over.

"I hadn't recieved that piece of evidence, may I see it?" Ron shook his head.
"I'm not allowed to, orders from the chief prosecutor" The Judge nodded and Mr. Starwind sat back down. The judge cleared his throat and banged his gavel on the table.

"Court is in session, The state VS Hugh Didit." He turned to the prosecutor. "Mr Starwind, do you have any opening comments?"

"Yes your Honor."

"The State seeks to prove the guilt of Mr. Hugh Didit. We have decisive evidence that he is the one who committed the triple homicide on June 13. As corroboration we have a witness for every murder the defendant committed."

"First I would like to call Detective Dick Gumshoe to the stand to give us a brief summary of the facts of the case."

Seth was pleased to see that the judge had started on time; his last case had begun one minute too early. ...Gumshoe. I should have known. He straightened up. Let's get on with it.

Gumsoe hurried up to the witness stand throwing the case files down on the stand and looking as professional as he could with coffee stains on his clothes.

Testimony
The Facts

"What we’re dealing with is a triple homicide."

"The first victim was Ian Transit, he was killed in the back of his truck, see he was hit with a blunt object."

"The second victim was found behind her fruit stand, she was strangled to death..... oh yea, her name was U-glee Starr."

"Finally the third victim Duda Sums was shot and found in the IT Room of her accountancy firm."

"All the victims were killed on the same day with one hour apart from each murder, the first at 1 PM, the second 2PM, and the third 3 PM."

"After some investigation we arrested Hugh Did it."

"Its a really open shut case, easy to see Hugh did it." Gymshoe

The judge thought for a moment and shook his head.
"Mr. Gumshoe, you seem to have forgotten something." Gumeshoe looked puzzled and a bit sheepish.
"Oh... yeah. Sorry, I forgot to present the murder weapons to the court."
"Well, can you do this before I ask the defence to cross examine?" the Judge asked slightly pointedly. Gumshoe began to look at the floor ashamedly.

I shouldn't really be so hard on the lad, The Judge thought,he really is trying his best. He cleared his throat.
"Mr Gumshoe, I feel I should give you an apology, I was being a bit too harsh on you."

Gumshoe went through the court files to find the murder weapons, Sadshoe he didn't seem to be able to get anything right today. It must be because Edgeworth wasn't the prosecutor for the case.... yea that must be it.

"Here they are, the first victim was hit with this club, it had blood of the victim on it."

"The second victim was strangled with this tie, it’s the suspects tie, their was blood of the second victim found on it."

"The third victim was shot with this Revolver the ballistic markings on bullet that was in the victim matched with the revolver."

"And to top it off all the weapons have the suspect’s finger prints, what more do you need?"

"Thank you." The Judge straightened his notes infront of him and marked some words down in pencil. "We will now hear the cross-examination from the Defence. I hope there are no objections from the prosecution?"

Lydia was studying the Murder weapons and listening to the testimony. she paused and mumbled to herself, 'isn't it odd that the tie caused the victim to bleed... Oh well, that isn't relevant...' she sighed as she rubbed her temples reviewing the detetctive's testimony over and over.

Ron sighed and while glaring at Gumshoe said,"The proscecution has no meaningful objections at this time."

Personally Ron would give anything to have someone that was competent on the stand. Gumshoe had already fouled up once, and they hadn't even gotten to the cross-examination yet! And if Eloue found a single flaw in Gumshoe's testimony, Ron would have to act fast to stop him from tearing Gumshoe apart.

Seth thought for a moment, his arms folded, and then looked at Lydia. "Hm. Perhaps some more details would have been nice. Well, we will get to that now. Start basic: first gather more information: get your ammo, then use it."

Cross Examination

"Detective Gumshoe." He placed one hand on his desk, and looked at Gumshoe without blinking for even a moment. "I think you might want to be more specific on these murders. First of all, what is the distance between these different crime scenes? And I'd also like to know whether there was a relation between the defendant and each of the victims. And thirdly... Were the police contacted after one of the crimes, and have they tried to prevent the other murders?"

Lydia looked to Seth, "Ye-yeah Details would have been nice. But of course gumshoe's siding with the prosecution as always.. not making your job any easier.." she sighed, her hands leaving her temples as she sat up straight and then peered to Gumshoe who was now being questioned about more details. Especially those of the distance. "Hmm- I thought i noticed something seeming off. Thank god you caught that. Otherwise we'd be done for- and the laughing stock of the courtroom." she paused and only shuddered as a tingling chill shot up her spine. "M.. My cousin wouldn't like that..." she sighed.

Ron shook his head in amusement. "Mr. Elune, give us a little credit. Do you honestly think that we would be accusing the defendant of All three of the murders if the distance was substantial?! The fact is that the time frame was sufficient for the defendant to be present during each of the murders. Moving on to your second question, the relationship that the defendant had with each of the victims is covered in the court record. And I'll allow Gumshoe to answer the final question." Ron ended with a bit of a smirk on his face.

Gumshoe was bombarded with questions by the defense, about relations, distance, time frames, but before he could answer the prosecution answered the question on distance. Gumshoe listened to the prosecutions powerful presence and when it came to the relation between the victims and the suspect Gumshoe was ready.

"Yea pal, Mr. Starwind has it right, and well we at the police got the call from the first crime but we weren’t able to find the suspect at all until he killed off the third victim."

"See, the suspect knew the first victim because he was involved in a car accident with the suspect a few days before it happened. The suspect's car had to be written up."

"The second victim gave the suspect a rotten pear by accident; it was on the same day as the car accident see, and well the pear gave the suspect gastroenternal distress."

"The third is easy; she worked with the suspect and had a heated argument with him on the same day as the other two accidents."

The Judge contemplated for a second before shaking his head.
"This seems very conclusive, and yet..." He looked at Mr.Starwind. "Something strikes me on the motives, don't they seem a bit... petty?" He looked towards the defendant "Most people wouldn't kill three people for small reasons"

Yeah, I wouldn't kill off three people for small reasons agreed Hugh in his head.

He took a look at the murder weapons and wondered what the decisive evidence and witness testimonies would turn out to be.

Seth sighed. "Mr. Scarwind, or whatever your name might be... Everything would go a lot faster if you listened more carefully to what I say. I did not ask whether the distance was short enough to commit the crime. I asked what exactly the distance is." He folded his arms. "If you do not have the correct answer, then I suggest you let the witness speak for himself. I'd like to know that, an explanation as to the petty motives, and whether you found anything on the crime scenes."

Lydia only stared as the Defense and Prosecution argued. Typical. it happened alot in many of the court cases she's seen. but now, she was indirectly involved.

Ron had his arms crossed and was currently druming his right hand on his left arm. He was trying to figure out where the defense was going with this. But then he thought back to his original questions, and wondered if he was going to use them with answer he had gotten for the third question. Ron wanted to ask him why he wanted the distances but it would most likely turn into a pointless argument. Shrugging, he sighed, "It's Starwind Mr. Elune or can't you hear properly? Gumshoe give the defense the distances he wants so badly."

With that he had to stop himself from smiling and thought, The hook has been cast, time to see if he will take the bait.

Gumshoe looked around, both the prosecution and defenses were demanding the exact distance which made his answer all the more embarrassing.

"Um, well see I don't know the exact distance between each crime scene."

"Oh, but they are all 25 to 35 minutes apart from each other."

The judge wrote down the information and nodded.
"He could've got to each place in time and commit the crime, espicially as there wasn't any congestion on the roads." He turned to the Defence. "And all the evidence at the crime scene has been presented here, I have a report from the homicide office proving it" He turned to Mr. Starwind again, he had a feeling the prosecution was about to drop a bombshell.

"But we still haven't heard about the motives. I cannot give a guilty verdict without one." This was indeed true, the law stated that a motive had to be present or an explanation given for why they would've done it. Unless... There was only one thing that could make him disregard the issue, and Mr. Starwind must have it.

Ron slammed his hand down on his desk and exclaimed, "Detective Gumshoe!! As the head of the investigation you should know these things! Mr. Elune if you still want the exact distances I'm sure I can get in contact with someone at the precinct who has them. As for the question of motives..."

Ron hesitated.

"We can get in to that when the defense wants to. Do you have any further questions for the detective, Mr. Elune?"

"Detective Gumshoe... have I not given you enough hints? There is an object that can show the exact distances, and
which can also give more overview of the situation. It is generally known as a map, detective." He sighed, shaking his head. "My apologies. I should have been more clear. It's just that I am used to more sophisticated detectives in this court."

"Apart from that, let me sum up what your theory is of how the murders happened.

Firstly, at 1:00 PM, Ian Transit was hit with a club and found in the back of his truck, which was covered in his blood, and bore the defendant's fingerprints. This Transit had had a car accident with the defendant several days before.

Secondly, at 2:00 PM, Ugly Star was strangled with the defendant's tie, which contained her blood and the defendant's fingerprints. She had accidentally given him a rotten pear once, which could happen to anyone.

Finally, at 3:00 PM, Duda Sums was shot by a revolver that, once again, bore the defendant's fingerprints. She had argued once with the defendant.

Am I correct?"

Gumshoe lowered his head, he had made mistakes before but this was sure to affect his income, it was getting to the point he couldn't even afford ramen.

"Sorry pal, I just didn't think the exact distance was that relevant seeing as it only takes about 25 minutes to get to each place."

"and, yea that’s pretty much how the murders happened."

Objection

The word rang through the court room, echoing along the walls and filling the entire room.
Seth's left hand was outstretched, his finger pointing straight at Gumshoe. "Detective Gumshoe!" He slammed his desk with his right hand. "I would prefer it if you did a little more thinking during your investigation. Think of it! If the same culprit attacked three victims seperately, with time between it, it must have been a premidated murder, correct?" He hit the desk again. "If that was the case, then why would he be so foolish not to bring gloves with him?! Any fool knows that fingerprints are the most valuable clues as to the real murderer! If the culprit really was planning to commit these crimes, with EXACTLY sixty minutes between them, he must have been a very calculating person! And if that was the case, he would certainly have made sure not to leave any fingerprints! This is clearly and most obviously a contradiction!"

Ron was half suprised that the defense would make that objection, it meant that the defendant hadn't told Seth about what had happened five years ago. That or he had already forgotten about it.

Objection

"I'm afraid it's not that simple in this case, Mr. Elune. For you see, your client has a condition. This isn't the first time your client has been in trouble with the law for violence." Ron ruffled through his pages of notes and pulled out the report he had been given only a little while ago.

"I have a report here from an incident five years ago that involved the defendant. The exact details of the incident are not listed, but it puts into question the mental stability of the defendant. I ask that it be accepted into evidence." He handed the report to a bailiff to give it to the judge

Elune was taken aback by this news, but he made sure not to show it. The defendant... is suffering from a mental disorder?
"Hmpf. I see."

But then...

Objection

"If that's the case, then don't you think it slightly unlikely that the defendant planned such cunning murderers, Mr. Scarwind? We are clearly dealing with a well-thinking murderer! If the defendant's mental condition is indeed questionable, then he couldn't have commited these crimes so perfectly timed, and left each of the crime scenes unnoticed!"

Ron smirked, ignoring the fact that Seth had messed up his name again. Obiviously Seth was trying to get him angry, but he would have to do more than that.
Objection

"You have to be joking, these murders can hardly be called clever. After all he didn't wear gloves, and he was seen at each crime scene. As for the timing I highly doubt that they were timed, that is most likely just a coincidence. And before you go saying it isn't I'd suggest you get some evidence to back up that claim.

"He 'was seen at every crime'? Interesting, that's the first I've heard of it. Perhaps our dear detective forgot to state that? True, the prosecution mentioned that there were witnesses, but the fact that they exactly saw him is something the detective should at least note as well."
No point in barraging at the detective anymore, I suppose...

"Well, I think I've heard enough. I am not impressed by this detective's presentation, but I suppose we have a vague view of how the murder occured. Now then, about the motives... I suppose you want to use the mental instability as an excuse for that too, Mr. Scarwind?"
