English-Native language+British english(My ethnic background is a bit complicated. Don't ask)
French-Passed French I and taking French II, easy except for telling time and numbers passed 79. Shit sux
Japanese- Spoken language, and Hiragana is really, really easy. Kanji is hard. And I haven't learned Katakana yet because 8th grade only had Hiragana in the curriculum.

You think that makes no sense, how about this: In french, the adjective comes after the noun. For example, you say "Un chaise noir" (a chair black) instead of "Un noir chaise (a black chair).

Weird, eh?

> Worst thing is, that's not always the case. Jean Gabin didn't say "T'as des yeux beaux, tu sais", but "T'as d'beaux yeux, tu sais". On the other hand, "des yeux bleus comme la nuit" is perfectly correct.
Weirder, eh?

Some adjectives come before, some come after. I don't know why, I just know that they do XD

But you live in France, so I'm sure that you know this already :P

English is a weird language, and I'm quite glad that it is my first language. I can't even imagine trying to learn English -__-

I am taking French this year, but I think I might take it online because the universities that I want to go to don't require the provincial exams anymore :) I have no need to continue taking it in university, though. I'm going into engineering XD My French grammar is excellent (Although there are obviously some things that I don't remember very well from years ago and things that I haven't learned), and I can read French very well and understand it. The only issues I have are with understanding people speaking French and speaking it myself :( Although spending a couple weeks in France this summer certainly helped :P

You're not missing anything too important. Just stay with Heisig's thingy and you'll be able to learn within the language.

You got that right.
Sweetbreads are meats. Sweetmeats are candy. We use plural indicators(-s) on nouns when we already have the numeric statistics and it's already divided into so many incomprehensible dialects that I want to abandon ship.
Akane wrote:

It's a big drawback. The reward wasn't worth the choice. Here's my arguement:

Most children that speak English as a first language don't seek out anything else because they don't believe they need it. They've been getting around on English for so long that they have no desire to use anything else. By the time they realize this isn't the case, they have no idea how to get this handled. Worse yet, the constant exposure to English is almost demeaning to the process of learning anything else. :yuusaku:
Akane wrote:

Neither can I. Probably because I have to assume English in order to learn it. I have no idea how all the Chinese people on Skype have the English skills of a 12 year old. No really...The comprehension is there but the spelling is horrible. I have no clue why so many Japanese people my age or more have horrible English. I know one admitted to using a translator and I know another had been using a textbook. Maybe they need better materials? =/

I completely understand how hard it is to learn another language and put it to use. It's awkward. Some places focus on oral communications, while other focus on spelling and grammar. It's the same for most languages. There generally isn't enough focus on both at the same time.

I'm focused on none of those things. This is probably why my grammar is bad. I focus on the reading/writing portions of the language and nothing else. I don't use enough or the right particles and I don't use verbs often enough. Japanese sentences are constructed much like a mathematic equation. This probably says more than it needs to. :\
Akane wrote:

Kanji are my main priority right now. I attempt communication and it's not very good. This is mainly because I say something basic or faulty and I can't understand the reply I'm given.
Akane wrote:

Probably your only chance at learning without having to drown out a lot of noise going on where you are. It's like a textbook flashcard with sound. Basically the best situation I believe exists for fast permanent memorization.

On a completely unrelated note, I'm talking to a Chinese girl. Her English is okay. o_O

English: fluent and actually very good. I have a wide vocabulary and practical knowledge of grammar. But English is America's main language anyway, so I guess this is to be expected.

Greek: Good enough so that I could live in Greece; my conversational Greek is good. That's because I went to school six years (grades 1 to 6) to learn the language, and more importantly, also speak it every day at home (it's my main language at home with the family, besides dad). That said, for more formal stuff, like essays and whatnot, my English is much better than my Greek. I also can't read and write Greek as fast as English, but I can still do it!

Spanish: learning, and I'm doing pretty well. Though if you asked Delsy she'd tell you I was fluent XD

I attribute my easy time learning Spanish to my learning Greek at a young age. I think it really helps if you learn a second language early.

The thing about learning Greek (or Russian, or Japanese, etc.--Far East languages probably more complicated, even) is that its alphabet, the foundation of the language, is not the same as English/Spanish/German/French etc. So even before I learned words or phrases, I learned the alphabet letter by letter as a 1st grader. The Greek ABCs, if you will. So, did I use English during class? Yes, but I also worked hard on the Greek. To develop writing, the teacher had us copy lesson texts out of the book, and told us to read them ten times anyway. And compared to reading and writing, speaking is easy. Illiterates can still speak. So I'm hypothesizing that if you practice reading and writing, speaking comes easier.

I'm very lucky to have had my grandmother's help. She grew up in Greece and thus knows the language well. And since my mom can speak Greek too, there always was and still is lots of Greek speaking going on in this house--that helped me a ton, in terms of learning conversational Greek.

A friend of mine who taught himself German will speak some German to me on occasion, just to use it, so he doesn't totally forget it. It doesn't matter that I don't know what he's saying, he'll just translate it later. Really using the language in a practical, everyday setting, it does wonders. We used to go back and forth to each other in German and Greek, translating each thing we said, lol

Do they actually still speak Greek in Greece? Sweet if so.

Also, speaking can be differant from reading/writing, you need to know pronunciation for speaking, and listening to someone can be faster paced than reading. If you don't know it well enough, you might not know exactly what they said.

I'm probably approaching JLPT3 proficiency at this point but I'm not 100% familiar with all the Grade 1 kanji pronunciations. Still, I'm able to point out several irregulars. Since I'm supposed to be in college right now and taking formal classes, I'm going to be really pissed if I can't take any of the JLPT or JSL tests this year.
johnny rainbow wrote:

So far I'm around 384/3027 according to Heisig. Of those 384 I've probably mastered the pronunciations of 100 characters. Yet the comprehension isn't entirely there.
johnny rainbow wrote:

A lot of my conversations are written. I'm missing a lot of vocabulary. Especially when I need to use action words like memorize, the if->then->or conjugations and my speed is still a bit unfavorable. I really fall apart when the second は is used.

I'm using a textbook called "Joukyuu de manabu"(Learning at the advanced level). It's a lot more focused on understanding/breaking down essays and advanced vocabulary/kanji/grammar. I'm also using another textbook focused solely on Lv.1 grammar, as well as ANOTHER textbook focused on writing essays in Japanese.

P.S.- Memorize = "oboeru"

I'm proficient enough in Japanese to both get by and translate, but I would prefer to work on that more.

I'm learning Chinese, beginner's level, at the moment.

Actually what we really need is a good environment of learning English...and what makes it more difficult to learn is, Chinese is ideograph while English is phonography. Thinking about the kanji you are learning, that might give you some ideas of it. (but I doubt if they really focus on understanding the visual meaning of the characters when they teach Japanese...)

And the languages I use are:

Shanghai dialect(my native language)

Mandarin (believe or not, both Mandarin and Shanghai dialect are Chinese, but they are two different languages, like English and French)

I go about studying kanji 4 different ways. I first look at the new character and try to create a mental image of the ideograph in my head. When I do this, I'm usually doing a component analysis of breaking the character into primitives that I'm familiar with. I learn the stroke order as I try to associate it with at most 3 English meanings and the kun pronunciation. Unless it doesn't have but one reading, I don't look for the on reading first because I'm looking at the character as is. I shouldn't be memorizing a bunch of pointless pronunciations until I'm presented with irregulars or a word that uses the ideograph with a familiar character. It sounds more complicated than it is.

This is why Chinese would drive me crazy.

Japanese (only a little. Usually I can only read kanji T-T)

Do you find yourself unlearning some things when you read Kanji in Japanese texts?

That's saying something.

45% of decent English speakers are in the non-obese category. THAT says something.

Eh? You certainly seem good enough at it to blend in in an English speaking message board.

A moderator of an English speaking message board, no less. :P

..But what if she mis-interprets what someone says...and with her mod powers....

..oh dear......

And how did I lose mod-ness to someone who is still learning to speak English?

When I grew up learning English, I thought of the longer words as combined expressions sort of like how kanji work together. It doesn't work the way you'd expect but it makes most spellings really easy.

...kanji are not combined expressions, they are symbols...

For example, as you posted earlier, the first character of you name is supposed to be written as 魯 in Chinese, which looks like a fish above the sun.

The single character 魯 is not usually used other than a name, but if you collocate it with the other characters and get vocabularies, then you can see it usually means "stupid","crass" or "rude". Don't you think it's pretty stupid, crass and rude for a fish to jump over the sun? (no matter you consider the sun as the real one or a symbol of god) No offense, it's just a name.Actually my own surname is 徐,which means "slow" or “dull". XD

Oh, you don't need to worry about that. Mandarin can make you understood in most part of China, and that's why we all started to learn Mandarin when we were 6. :redd:

Sometimes, yes. For example, 好 means "like" in Japanese but "good" in Chinese.

Not really, it always takes me three times of energy and time to finish an essay compared with the native speakers, not to mention the grammar and spelling errors can also hurt the marks.

Don't worry...I used to make that kind of mistakes, but now it's O.K for me to understand others' words since I've been here for two years. :pearl:
To be honest you didn't lose to me. I didn't even offer to be a mod.
