Hmm, I guess the English grammar was a bit more polished in the European version. Didn't really pay attention when playing the game since English isn't my native language, but at least the "The miracle never happen" line that rupa mentioned is definitely fixed.

Oddly, case 4 (which I believe has the most text and is often considered the best) has very few typos.

The translation was well-done, just not proofread enough. There's a difference between lackluster proofreading and an outright bad translation.

To be fair, there's a whole lot of text in the game. Far more than your average DS game.

In fact... the PW:AA game script file on gamefaqs is 1246K in size and it doesn't even have all of case 5. Compare that to Metal Gear Solid 3, a full length PS2 game with a shitload of dialog, which only has a script file 253k in size.

There's just 'that' much text in the game.

I was supposed to be all sad and stuff, and then "the miracle never happen" comes and I start laughing. HARD.

Does anyone have full sentence of the silver/sliver typo? I might have seen it, but I can't remember.

Meh. I didn't care much for the typos. Personally, I would rather have "Alter", or "Half" than "Oh snap I did not hear such a truth." But that's just me.

I agree in that they had a lot of issues with spelling.

It's ALTAR not ALTER
It's HAVE not HALF as in "I guess I have to work with you"

I haven't actually noticed most of these mistakes, and I’ve played through each case of JFA at least 3 times! I normally read pretty fast, so I see what they’re saying and don’t bother about the spelling, grammar etc.

It is quite disturbing to me. I'm kind of a spelling nazi really. The 'happen' typo hugely annoyed me. Another thing I really got irritated at was Maya's comment in Case 2-3:
"The defense needs more time to present it's lace! I mean, case."
For some reason, that kind of mistake always annoys me a lot. ITS case!

I'm pretty sure what Maya said was done on purpose, to show that she was nervous. The "sad ending" of JFA honestly almost had me crying. I thought it was really emotional, until the "miracle never happen" part. It just killed the whole mood.

I found it downright funny in Case 2-4, when Edgeworth snarks Phoenix's grammar and then starts having problems with his own. Articles agree with their subjects in number, Mr. Edgeworth!

One of the things with the spelling is that a lot of people wont pick up on it unless they read it REALLY carefully. I know I didn't spot any throughout the game :/

I only noticed a few because I tend to read fast and overlook things like that. They don't really bother me. The only reason why I noticed "miracle never happen" is because it was the only sentence on the screen at that time.

You have to think that for the sheer amount of text, there's simply no way it'll be perfect. There's dozens of grammatical mistakes in the game, but I guarantee you no one will notice even one-third of them in a single run-through of all the cases. That is why the typos exist in the first place. The proof-readers, when going over the script, know what words are supposed to be there as they play through (as any reader of English would), making it easy to see one thing but THINK you see another. This problem is even worse if the same person proof-reads multiple times, as opposed to different proof-readers going through it once each, which is likely why the second game's translation yields more typo's; they probably used fewer proof-readers. Re-using the same ones means it is less likely that new mistakes will be caught, which we have all probably noticed at some point when you proof-read a paper a dozen times over only to go to class the next day and discover that you typed the same word twice in a row.

You'll also notice that all of the errors are with words being different words (have being half, happened being happen, etc.) due to the fact that errors resulting in non-words (such as have being hsve) will be caught by spell check. Since the same person, when translating, will sit for a long time typing and typing and typing, they won't have extreme concentration the whole time.

Incidentally, I thought it was pretty good. My first time playing through the game I only caught around half a dozen typos. I'd say the only really bad one was "happen", though a bad one that was indeed, especially since it was probably the highest attention-grabbing point of the entire game.

The "good thunker" line was NOT a typo. It was meant to be the joke. The mistake was in place on purpose to show that Phoenix was indeed a "good thunker" and not a "good thinker".

Also, a "sliver of common sense" is correct... Those with a sliver of common sense (or grammatic sense) would know that SILVER refers to the COLOUR or the MATERIAL, whereas SLIVER means "SMALL AMOUNT" in this case. So "a sliver of common sense" would mean "a small amount of common sense". "A silver of common sense" would make NO SENSE.

With the sheer amount of text in this game, it might not be possible to be "perfect", given the limited amount of time they had to work on this. They could try to perfect it, but as Ilovecaz had pointed out (and as I had previously), it is very difficult to pick up mistakes that you had made (especially when there's so much text) unless you have a fresh pair of eyes to over read them for you. That is why you always have someone else (usually one who has not worked on your paper/project) read over the text for you and tell you whether it makes sense or not. I worked on a really big project a while back and while I was simplifying text because I thought it made perfect sense (since I had been working very intensively on it), someone from our client team read it and said, "I don't understand a lot of the things in here, please explain". When one is so engulfed and trapped in one's writing, it is possible to continue to find mistakes and bugs, but it gets very difficult to do so. Even with the Scanlation Team, there were three people who spot check the final productions, but there will always be someone who would point out a typo or spelling mistake.

Despite what Capcom had claimed. I honestly believed that the time was pressed and the Localisation Team barely had enough time to work on the translation - let alone proofread it. I'm saying that is because there are a few simple mistakes that could get picked up right away if they could read through it one more time.

There are those individuals who, before they played the game, had a biased view where the game would suck and the translation/grammar/spellings would suck really badly, went out of their way to track down the mistakes. I think that really takes the fun away from playing the game without having such mentality...

The only other thing that kinda irritated me was the fact that the quotation marks are always on the wrong side of the period at the end of the sentence. They're supposed to go inside. DD:

The only errors I thought was weird were Oldbag's testimony where she misconjugated "find" (i.e., "There's something I wanted to find out" would be correct, but she messed it up somehow) and, of course, "the 'miracle' never happen". That one was bad enough that they referenced it in 3-3 (well, I thought it was a reference, anyway).

At least it's readable. Yes, the typos could be fixed with a doublecheck by the translators, but it's still got that charm. I hope they run doublechecks next time. It's not a huge issue at least.
