BYU Study: Video Games Are Bad For You In So Many Ways
January 23, 2009

A study published today in the Journal of Youth and Adolescence maintains that video games - including the non-violent kind - are linked to a variety of negative findings among college students.

According to the Deseret News, the study, conducted by a team of faculty and students at Utah's Brigham Young University, concludes that:

* the more the students play video games, the worse their relationships are with friends and parents (although this effect is modest)
* those who play video games daily smoke pot twice as much as other players and three times more than those who never play
* young women who play often have lower self-esteem

BYU prof Laura Walker, the lead author of the study, told the newspaper:

Everything we found associated with video games came out negative... [But] I don't want parents to go out and yank all video games. It's like TV. We have to choose what's good and bad and practice moderation.

Student Alex Jensen, who participated in the research project, added:

I assumed violent video games would be related to lower relationship quality with friends and family. I didn't expect regular video games — nonviolent video game use — would be correlated to lower relationship quality...

An abstract posted on the website of the Journal of Youth and Adolescence offers some information on the methodology of the BYU study:

Participants included 813 undergraduate students (500 young women, 313 young men, M age = 20...) who were mainly European American (79%), unmarried (100%) and living outside their parents’ home (90%).

GP: It is quite interesting that this study would appear in conservative Utah at a time when a renewed effort to legislate video games is underway there.

It's bullshit. The reason this would be true is that people LET it be true. They don't try to keep good relationships with parents (and sometimes the parents are just 'tards) not to mention they fall victim to the influence.

Look at me, I play video games daily, have been since I was five years old, I've never smoked pot, I have a pretty damn good relationship with my parents and family members, and I do well in college.

Each time I read that sentence it means something other then the pervious time I read that sentence.

People who play videogames, smoke pot twice as often as videogamers who don't game every day, but people who don't play video games are all guilty of smoking pot.

Anyways, I think they're right, they're just wrong about how they're approaching it. It's the simple garbage in garbage out formula. Fill your mind with violent prone subjects, and you'll be more prone to violent actions. Fill your mind with peaceful subjects, and you'll be more prone to peaceful actions.

Also, curiously, the majority of people interviewed were Women. I guess there are more Women gamers, then the world lets on.

Yes, because as we all know the Brain Age games and the Tetris DS games encourage pot smoking. :wellington:

This is such bad 'research' it sounds like a parody.

Quote:
* the more the students play video games, the worse their relationships are with friends and parents (although this effect is modest)

Maybe their relationships were worse to start with, which is why they are then more likely to play video games as non-family activities? i.e. increased video game use was a consequence of bad relationships, not the cause of the bad relationships. (And is 'modest' meaning 'not statistically significant'?)
Quote:
* those who play video games daily smoke pot twice as much as other players and three times more than those who never play

Um.
Quote:
* young women who play often have lower self-esteem

See 1.

And of course, I assume everyone didn't play the same games?

Huh? Those who play video games daily smoke pot twice as much as what other players? Of video games? Basketball players? Just flirtatious "playa"'s?

Eh, whenever the FDA does these studies, they find no definite correlation; why should these people? :yuusaku:

I completely agree with this! I mean, ever since I started playing video games at the tender age of 7, All i've made is bad decisions! Especially because of those damned Phoenix Wright games! Those terrible characters are SO influential!

Thanks to :edgeworth: , I now go to school in a cravat. (I'm such a rebel)

Seriously, though, this study is biased. As one of those guys whoimmediately recognized thename of the UniversityBecause I've heard it elsewhere... :yuusaku:

... Where was I? Oh, yeah... biased. How many of these people truly play games? For every point they can make about videogames being bad for you, I can prepare a counter-argument about how videogames can be good, complete with personal experiences. Videogames make you a loner? Play more multiplayer games, especially co-op oriented games. Same-room multi is always great for bonding. Games mess you body up? Actually, they've helped me develop hand-eye coordination really well. Also, with games like DDR, Wii Fit and those Wii games that make you move, games might as well become another instrument in daily exercise! Games make you a pothead? Only if you allow yourself to be surrounded by potheads (which I don't, personally). Also, comparatively FEW games actually present and glorify drug use. Or do we really need that "Say No To Drugs" slogan that was in older arcade machines in this day and age?

QFT.

And that article earlier is hilarious. I'm sorry but if it's not right, why is it 'intellectually right' to blame games without enough evidence?

Honestly, I don't understand these people sometimes.

So, if you find a game relaxing, does that make relaxing bad?

That article doesn't make sense to me.

Exactly. I was waiting for someone to bring that up, otherwise I would have done it myself. Let's look at the supposed conclusions...

Quote:
* the more the students play video games, the worse their relationships are with friends and parents (although this effect is modest)
* those who play video games daily smoke pot twice as much as other players and three times more than those who never play
* young women who play often have lower self-esteem

Now who is to say that the relationship is not the other way around?

- students with worse relationships with their friends and family are more likely to play videogames
- those who smoke pot are more likely to play videogames
- women with low self esteem are more likely to play videogames

Takes on a whole new light hmmm? Videogames are not causing students to have worse relationships, smoke pot or lower their self esteem; it is just more likely for those types to play videogames instead.

A bit like blaming gory movies and violent videogames on people going wacko and acting them out. I just think the wacko people are attracted to that sort of media and it isn't screwing them up, they are already screwed up to begin with...

Seriously, what a load of crap. But i think they mean that if u play too much games, you get addicted and such and you just sit there playing games. (Obviously the writer didn't think about multiplayer gaming...)

Listen up, we got an update on the news
Quote:
Prof Clears Air Around Study Findings

A recent Brigham Young University study found a correlation between avid videogaming and substance abuse and anti-social behavior amongst young adults; results that don't paint gamers in the best of light.

But in an interview with Edge, the study's co-author, Dr. Larry Nelson with BYU's School of Family Life stressed that although there is a correlation, that doesn't necessarily mean gaming causes any of the associated negative traits that the study found.

"The study absolutely does not find that videogames cause this behavior. We've repeatedly tried to emphasize that in the study itself. It was all correlation," he said.

He made clear that a correlation simply means that as one variable changes, so will another. "All we know is that it's all related, and maybe it's a third variable that is causing the problems..."

The study, which he called a "first step," did not come to any conclusions regarding a potential third variable that would increase videogame use and supposed bad behavior.

The authors of the study, who polled over 800 university students across the U.S. (no BYU students took part), purposely focused on potentially positive aspects of videogame use with the belief they'd find positive correlations, said Nelson. But the researchers claimed to have found no--zero--positive links.

For instance, the study found videogame use correlated with greater drug use and drinking behaviors and poorer quality relationships with friends and parents. Violent videogame play was associated with more sexual partners; female gamers also reported lower self-worth.

But a lot of college students experiment with drugs, alcohol and sex. Wouldn't that skew the results?

"Absolutely," Nelson answered. "... One factor [of increased substance use] could be the experimentation that goes on with [drugs and alcohol]." He also said an increased amount of freedom for students to make their own decisions, whether it's to smoke a joint or play more videogames, could also play as a factor with the correlations that the study discovered.

Nelson admitted that this wasn't an exhaustive study about videogames; it was focused on young adulthood, and didn't explore some of the more widely-accepted benefits of videogaming.

"If we had done a study specifically on videogaming ... I'm sure [benefits] are there. There's no doubt they're there. We're not saying there is nothing at all positive about videogames."

He added, "Some young adults are flourishing during this time period [of young adulthood]. Others are floundering. Given this time period is unlike any other--young people can do what they want, they don't have their parents looking over their shoulder all the time--it's up to them to choose. How they choose to spend their time can be a bigger factor in their lives than ever before because they're in control."

As for future studies, Nelson hopes to narrow the focus onto gamers with certain personalities or who play in family or social settings.

playing video games can be bad for you just like sitting around and watching TV all day is bad for you

or being a huge anime buff

or listening to music on your headphones for 24/7

we've gone over this so many times in CR. Being really, really into something like this no matter what it is, will always result in you isolating the world around you

someone should do a study on why people keep doing fucking studies on things we know the answer to

Let's see, there are many homeless people, folks who cant pay for medical care, and kids with AIDS in Africa. Yet look where our money is going.

If videogames made people smoke weed, I would probably be the biggest addict ever. I know tons of gamers who don't smoke shit. Some who play every chance they get.

And I don't think videogames cause bad relationships between parents and kids. Sure videogames may keep kids from their parents, but I dont think they make them hate each other. I still love my parents. Respect them and all that.

None of this shit is true. Its just folks trying to figure out what to do with money.

BAHAH.
Well duh, its BYU.
The guys aren't even allowed to have their hair below their ears.

This study makes me giggle.
I'm gunna go smoke double the amount of pot than used to be friends now.
We used to be closer, but then I started to play video games.
Also, I have no self confidence.

OR MAYBE I LOST MY FRIENDS AND SELF CONFIDENCE BECAUSE OF POT, NOT GAMES.
Stupy.
