Anyway, have you ever come across something that you think would make a great movie but has never been made into one (or has, but the movie version stunk)? There are plenty of great stories out there, as well as actual historical events, that would do fabulously on the silver screen with the right people in charge of it. Books, plays, video games, operas, historical events... All of them have potential for a film, but some are left alone.
To avoid making this thread a mere excuse to post, I'm hoping that when and if you name something that you think would make a good movie, you'll explain why you think that, as well as present possible reasons why it--or someone else's suggestion--might not do well. I'm hoping there will be some actual discussion rather than a mere posting of opinion and then never looking at the thread again--always a possibility in a "state your opinion" thread.
So, to start, one story that I think has potential is Khovanshchina, an opera by Modest Musorgsky (the actual historical events the opera's based off of would also do well). Why? To answer that question, I feel a small synopsis is necessary:
Under Tsars Peter I and Ivan V, a large number of Westernizing reforms have been enacted, some bearing the potential to change Russia forever. Of these, the reform of the Russian Orthodox Church spurs the greatest controversy. Opponents of the reform, the Old Believers, find themselves in danger of being persecuted. In their struggle for freedom, they find an ally in the power-hungry Knyaz Ivan Khovansky, commander of the Streltsy. Khovansky, an opponent of the reforms, has been planning, along with some others, to overthrow the Tsars. But Khoavnsky and the Streltsy, despite having the love of much of the citizenry, are clearly corrupt, and will have their work cut out for them trying to resist the schemes of the Tsars' supporters.

ooops! i forget it's about stories..well ANYWAY..those two were great!! after i finished the PW series i told my mom "mom i wanna be a lawyer" and she said "huh? what about being professor??!"

I've always been curious as to how Hotel Dusk, the DS game, would make into a movie. The whole game is an interactive novel, practically. The problem is that there would be a ton of dialogue, but not much action. But if good actors are chosen, then the movie could be done pretty well; the whole game thrives on character development, so if the actors are bad, then the movie would be a flop.
An old childhood favorite of mine, Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine, the same one who wrote Ella Enchanted. I think TPB could be a good movie if done correctly. Basically, two sisters who are princesses live together, one is very brave and longs for adventure while the other is shy and prefers to have a quiet home life. The brave one is stricken with Grey Death, I think it's called. Basically, she only has a month or so to live, so the shy sister has to go out and outwit a dragon, fight ogres, etc. and get to a waterfall where the cure is. I think if they followed with the actual plot this time (unlike they did with Ella Enchanted), it could be a good, heart-touching movie.
I can't think of any others right now.

Or Splinter Cell, they had a movie trailer, but it was just Fisher turning on his goggles.

I know what you mean. Movie companies, in their efforts to turn masterpieces into movies, will often alienate fans of the original work by altering the plot, be it slightly or significantly. I've never read Ella Enchanted, nor have I seen the movie, so I don't know how much the movie differed from the book, but I've read up somewhat on other movies that messed with the plot of the work they're based off of (e. g. The Swan Princess, The Fox and the Hound, The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame).
My sister actually said she thinks Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn would make great movies if the actors (if it's live-action) or voice actors (if it's animated) are competent. She frequently complains about the inferiority of American voice actors in the dubs of video games. I agree with her position on the games and the quality of the voice acting, though I tend to give voice actors more sympathy than my sister does.

Basically it's about a girl who is wakes up one day, her boyfriend must of given her sleep pills or something, the problem she's been injected with something and she goes to find out why. She then discovers even more questions, her boyfriend had a wife and kid and had killed them, he killed his previous girlfriend and though only 21 he is a billionaire. How is it possible? She discovers some test results from the lab and finds out he only took her blood, but why? She overhears him and a old man talking, that old man wants Cathy killed. In the ends she gets kidnapped and discovers the reason all this had happened, he is a eternal man - he took her blood to see if she was eternal too. They try to kill her but he saves her, after a massive fight at the kidnappers manor they escape. But the story deoesn't end, she discovers that her father's death may not of been natural but a murder... (I don't knw the rest since it's a triolgy I think..)~ But anyway I think that story would be a greeat film ^-^

Although it's really medieval swords and magic and the audience it would appeal to would most likely be certain teenaged girls, I think some of Tamora Pierce's books would make really good movies. There's plenty of action and romance to keep audiences busy and at the same time the stories and characters are very interesting and there are themes within them that are relevant in today's world.

The other day I was imagining how sick a story based around a heavy metal song would be. The song's title is "Sleepwalker", performed by Megadeth, and the film would center on a "sleep walking murderer" who - you guessed it - walks in his sleep and kills people. While sleep walking, he gains superhuman strength able to bust through walls, break down padlocked doors, and just kick ass like the Terminator. Naturally, the local law enforcement and public are clueless because no average Joe could cause such damage, could he?
I guess the "story" being told through the lyrics is about a murderer who kills people while sleep walking.

Yeah.
As long as the actors were British. It won't work otherwise. And the dog has to be trained really well.
It's about a boy and dog who sail on the ship the Flying Dutchman. When their captain curses the Lord, the ship is struck down and the crew is cursed to eternity at sea. But the boy and dog are rescued by an angel who can see that their hearts are pure. The angel can't completely reverse the curse, but he/she/it does make it so that they may live on land instead of at sea, and their eternity is to be spent helping others. It's kind of sappy when said like that, but there's some awesome naval battles and fistfights and whatnot. It would be amazing as a movie. I think in the first book, they sail on the Dutchman, help out a shepherd, and then go save a small town from destruction by a land developer (think Ozzie Mandrill (bonus points for reference recognition) except without the cool accent).

I'm sorry I can't really comment on them as I haven't read them.Has anyone played Shadow of Destiny on the PS2? It's a really old game about a guy who has to keep going back in time to prevent someone from killing him over and over again. It involved a lot of interesting elements like alchemy, the Philosopher's Stone, djinns, that kind of thing. And it all took place in a German town in different time periods (rare for a Japanese game). There are a few things in the story that could have been fine-tuned, but the overall plot was just amazing and full of twists. Sadly, it was one of those games that don't involve weapons or killing things so it slipped under the radar for tons of people. :( I think if put into the right hands, the story could be made into a great movie.

Hermann, a military engineer with a fondness for card games, becomes obsessed with learning about three winning cards that are known by an old countess. I'd rather not spoil the story in its entirety. Suffice it to say he is driven to the brink of madness by his efforts to learn the cards. The plot's fairly simple, but I think it has potential.

I've played this too, it was interesting but not very long if I remember corrently. It was ok in the end, I could just not bring myself to give a damn about the main character for that irritating little kid.

I think you can only really feel for the main character after you've seen all the possible endings. Then he all of a sudden seems a bit more interesting. And yes, that kid WAS really annoying. XD
And DramaticaXIV2, film directors have attempted movies with multiple endings before. I haven't seen Sliding Doors, but I heard it was a movie about 2 possible outcomes based on if a woman missed her train ride home or not. The other prime example at the top of my head is Run Lola Run. One story, three possible branched off scenarios and three very different endings. So it is possible, and I'd love to see someone pull it off for Shadow of Destiny.

SECONDED SO HARD.
That's one of my favorite games ever. As evidenced by my username. It wasn't even that stunning, but the plot was engaging enough to ... well, keep you engaged.
It would be a really cool horror movie if they creeped it up a little, with all his deaths and whatnot. Sybilla was a little unnerving by herself, and she was just a normal little girl. I think it was her voice. oh and I'm sure the themes like alchemy and time-travel would be right up the general public's alley these days. : D
Though I'm at a loss for the multiple endings. I'd suggest that they pull a Final Destination 3 and let you pick lots of the major choices to get the ending, but that would be exactly like the video game. Hmm. Maybe they'd only pick one. (my favorite was A, personally)
since I've rambled about SoD enough, here's my list of other titles to make good movies~
I second Castaways of the Flying Dutchman. Lots of Kate DiCamillo's books would be great, particularly The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. I also want to see A Wrinkle in Time made into a blockbuster movie; that'd be really cool. I love Meg!
And finally: ARTEMIS FOWL. Why has this not been made into a movie yet. WHY. I do not understand. It's like the third most popular series ever after Harry Potter and Twilight. Artemis is full of awesome just by himself, and his arch nemesis is a FAIRY, seriously. I heard that it was being filmed a few years ago, but that was just a rumor that I guess wasn't true? :c

Also, I woildn't mind a movie verson of Death Note: Another Note the LA BB Murder Cases by NISIOSIN, that was a great book and I would love to see what BB would look like in movie form.

Yeah, it was being filmed. I'm glad that it didn't end up being released, they were messing it all up. I can't remember who they got for Holly, but I do remember thinking that she wouldn't be able to do it right.

That book is awesome.
I'd quite like to see the Edge Chronicles made into films, or at least the Twig tirlogy.

What with Bungie talkign about a Halo movie; a film absed upon gGhosts of Onyx would be a lot more exciting than some simple Combat Evolved storyline.
