I don't think Kris would've really worked since this isn't a remake of Crystal. They probably wanted to make something a little more unique for HeartGold and SoulSilver. If they do end up doing a remake for Crystal, though, she should be the female playable character for that.
As for Silver, since they didn't change Gold's design all that much, I doubt Silver would have much done to him aside from being redone in the newer drawing style. His in-game sprite doesn't seem all that different, either.

But if you're playing to relive it, then it's better to just play the original. I wanted to relive Red/Blue, which is part of why I was dissapointed at FR/LG.
I'm looking forward to it though, despite my worry. As long as the music is good, anyways.

I had both Gold and Silver when I was a kid and adored those games. It was my favorite generation of pokemon. (Granted I never played Ruby and Sapphire because that's when I lost interest in pokemon at the time, but Diamond and Pearl got me into it again)

I still have my 10 year old Gold File (I am EPIC, I know). I'll prolly do the same thing I did with FR and LG and get both. I have 3 DS systems (2 Lite, one DSi) along with Diamond, Gold an Platinum. THEREFORE, I can play BOTH at the same time =D
It should make it a crapload easier for me to do the stuff in My Pokemon Ranch, hehe. I still have my Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald but I've sent most of the Pokemon to Diamond or Pearl XD
Gold and Silver (and Crystal) has 3 things that hasn't really been replicated in the next two generations:
1. 16 Gyms
2. Mystery Gift (those who have G/S/C know what I mean)
3. A Trainer House in Viridian City for free XP, money and items.
G/S/C resulted in an explosion of Pokemon Fansites. They'll never admit it but The Pokemon Poke Center (aka TPPC) was inspired by G/S/C. The thing I liked about G/S/C is unlike the other Games it didn't matter what Pokemon you started with as it gave you no real advantage until after the Elite Four. Most people roll with Cyndaquil because it's a long time before you get another Fire Pokemon, and a decient one at that.

I chose a different starter in each version; For Gold I went with Chikorita, Totodile in Silver and Cyndaquil in Crystal. I've done that for every generation since the first, with the exception of Yellow of course.
