So, here's a thread for discussing my favorite genre of music, Metal.
Whatever subgenre you like - Metalcore, Folk Metal, Power Metal, Black Metal etc. -, you can discuss new bands you discovered here, present your favorite songs and so on.

My personal recommendation is Sabaton, a Power Metal band using lyrics about modern warfare (the two world wars, especially). The singer has an awesome, powerful voice, the music gets in your ear quickly and the uncommon lyrics are intriguing. Take a look! :)

i just listened to a Sabaton song. sounds alot like Dragonforce, but better. much much much much MUCH better.

anyways, i have two favorite bands at the moment. Killswitch Engage and All That Remains. the screaming vocals mixed with harmonic vocals, two guitar harmony, drums with double bass...honestly, it's enough to make someone jizz in their pants. :godot:

Yeah. I like "Through the Fire and the Flames", but EVERY DragonForce song sounds like that one. Kind of ... mh. Boring, at least.
Sabaton don't have THAT much innovation, but enough to keep you interested. And the singer is just SO awesome!

See. I'm not saying you're doing this, but your typical DragonForce discussion on the internet usually devolves into a bunch of people going "DragonForce fucking sucks, they can't play live. blahblahblah every song sounds the same, blahblahblah, they're a disgrace to metal, blaaaaaah."

But really, people miss the point; DragonForce is hilarious. Every song sounding the same only adds to their comedic value. Though I guess they're still not as funny as Demoniac.

Okay, guys.

List of Things Not Heavy Metal:
Slipknot
Bon Jovi
AC/DC
Kiss
Rush
Led Zeppelin
Motley Crue
Aerosmith (especially, Aerosmith)
Korn
Godsmack
Linkin Park
Faith No More
etc.

List of Things Heavy Metal:
Black Sabbath
Judas Priest
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Dragonforce
All That Remains
Bathory
Cannibal Corpse
Mastodon
In Flames
etc.

Disagree and I will shove the corna in your eyes.

That aside, I went to a kickass concert at the Fillmore a week ago. The headlining band was Testament with Unearth, Lazarus A.D. and some obscure band (I think they called themselves Laars Rockit) opened up. Testament played for an hour and a half and the place was a mess afterwards. I went alone but I had a wild time regardless.

When has he ever?

Anyway, your list is more or less accurate, with the exception of one or two debatable bands, most of the ones on the "not" list are hard rock. I'm kinda on the fence with AC/DC, but meh.

I'm not sure why Faith No More are considered metal by anyone. Don't get me wrong, FNM are one of my all time fav bands, but there's not that much metallicness to them. A couple of songs, e.g. Jizzlobber could be called metal, but not the band themselves.

I think it might be harsh to exclude any Nu-Metal band from the heavy metal list, although it is one of the worst forms of metal ever created...

I like some Heavy Metal like Black Sabbath, Metallica and Judas Priest, but I can't stand Death Metal or Metalcore

I don't mean to offend anyone here, but seriously, how can anyone listen to that stuff? I mean sometimes the music can be great, but I can't stand the screaming vocals. Talking about bands like Cannibal Corpse or Bleeding Through.

Meh, maybe I'm too much of a pussy.

Just note, people ... Debating is fine, but no "Your taste is not really Metal, therefor it sucks" please. People have different opinions about what is Metal and what is not, so discuss, but don't flame. Thanks. :pearl:

Another recommendation for you guys: Thunderstone. Good Speed Metal with nice vocals and addicting melodies. Check out "Until we touch the burning Sun" and "Tool of the Devil"!

Sweet that you like them. These guys really need more fans, they are addicting as hell and goddamn awesome.
"40:1" is great, but my favorites of the album "The Art of War" are "Panzerkampf" and "Ghost Division".

"Panzerkampf" is one heck of a song, Perry. It's very soaring-epic power metal, nothing special but considering how difficult it is to standout (not necessarily make something original) I can cut them some flak. I checked a short review of The Art of War on All Music and it sounds like an album I would enjoy.

Great to hear that. "Soaring-epic Power Metal" describes it pretty well actually. And that singer is a goddamn BEAST! He's shorter than I am, but has the voice of a giant. If Sabaton have something that makes them stand out, it's the vocals.

No band affected the metal world more than Pantera during the early to mid-'90s. Beginning with its 1990 album, Cowboys from Hell, the post-thrash band put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passé. Sure, a lot of critics point toward Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the subsequent alternative rock explosion as the death knell of '80s-style metal, but you could just as easily point toward Pantera.

copy paste speaks the truth.

fudge copy paste is for suckers but Pantera rock, regardless. Such a vulgar display of power... they must have been far beyond driven to reinvent the steel and the launch the great southern trendkill.
