Funny thing, I initially really disliked Lauren (Himeko) because of her overt similarities and parallels to Viola.* That and she was a total wuss of a character. On the other hand, I liked Viola because despite the creepy vibe they pushed, she's supposed to be a lovestruck sweetheart.

Then I noticed that Lauren talks to herself. And carries really sharp scissors everywhere. Does that spell UTTER BATSHIT INSANE for you? It does for me.

So, just as Viola is one of my favorite characters because of her sweet and vulnerable side hidden under a creepy and controlling facade, I've kind of warmed up to Lauren because of the implied mental instability behind her appealingly vulnerable exterior.

Not just their appearances, but also the way their stories parallel each other, like how their "boyfriend" betrays them for money, and their true family identity plays a part in revealing the truth. Just compare their concept art! Viola v Lauren—it seems like there's some sort of Japanese cultural archetype for this kind of character.

Spoiler: My reasoning for Himeko's behaviour/personality

Lauren and Viola, they both exhibit signs and symptoms of... PTSD resulting from prolonged abuse. I've worked with and seen many women and girls who've been physically or sexually abused, and they do remind me of Lauren and Viola. There is a vast spectrum of behaviour problems, but I think what stands out about Lauren is her repetitiveness - licking her ringpop, fidgeting, etc. Her anxiety is off the wall... She seems to be age regressed somewhat, and I suspect she probably rocks back and forth when sitting, and sucks on the ring - which represents a pacifier. Her posture says a lot too, hunched over, head down - a sign of low self esteem and fear. The verbalisation of inner thoughts and tendency to refer to herself in the third person as well as self-reprimanding/harm (scissors) is typical of abuse victims. All of these are comfort behaviours, most likely because there is no close friend or family member to soothe and protect her. Despite her modest style of dress, headscarf and all, I suspect she is probably quite promiscuous - although this is just conjecture, her reaction (or fantasising) to Edgeworth is very telling. I wouldn't be surprised if she wears kinky underwear underneath that maid outfit. (I wish). It seems that Andrew and the Amano family has a powerful hold over her, and it follows that Andrew is probably her abuser, and someone she has formed an emotional attachment to - something like Stockholm Syndrome. She's come to depend on him, which is also another reason for her fixation on the ringpop. The ringpop is very important since it functions both as a security blanket, works as a reward-punishment system that symbolises an inbalance of power between her and Andrew, and is what keeps her loyal to him. The fact that it is usually given to children should also be noted.

Unlike Viola, Lauren does not have obvious ... wounds. But I think her emotional wounds are probably deeper.

But yeah... poor girl.

When I saw this posted, I wondered whether Lauren being a programmer was a coincidence, but then I saw you posted it on the relevant fic on the Kink Meme, too.

It's really well drawn, and the fic is going great.

(Incidentally, is it possible for a mod or someone to edit the title to include Lauren? Especially since another character has a similar Japanese name and I can never remember which one is Callisto and which one is Lauren.)

Lauren is sooooooooo cute, and a bit suggestive with that ring XD, but in all seriousness i think she is adorable, why? Because she looks like my girlfriend (minus the maids uniform and headscarf)

Its so sweet how she is adamant to defend her boyfriend, and how distraught she was after she found out her dad had been killed nearly moved me to tears (then i remembered it was an AA game)

But the two things that confuse me are her little threaten sprite. Where does she get the scissors from and why? as far as i can see she never carries them with her, they're never visible on any other sprite and doesnt seem to need them. And what significance is the whole cut the hair thing? she threatens to cut her hair but.....WHY? i cant work it out, it would not affect any of the characters or even her. It just seems unnecessary.

I liked Lauren, and I felt that even though she's a "cute" character, it felt like her genuine personality, like, "a cute character" rather than "a character made to be cute" (even though she obviously is). I also think that despite her sensitivity and awkwardness, she was kind of cool. I like how completely weird she seems to be, talking to herself and all that stuff, and I also feel like there could be some hidden depth in her character, particularly fitting with the theory someone earlier in this thread mentioned about her being a victim of PTSD and abusement or... whatever it was.
