The thought has been around for a long time now: How could one make Gumshoe look even more awesome than he currently is? When I initially had the thought, I created this video. Of course, I obviously thought nothing would come of it. I kept on with the thought process anyway. About a month ago I finally had an idea about how it could happen, while not having to completely revamp the entire play style (It would pretty much need to be like Ace Attorney Investigations, but without the arguments, if it were to be like my original idea).

Since I'm no real expert, help would be greatly appreciated. I am going to be using PWLib, but I think there coding there may be a bit advanced. PyWright might be my best shot, as I' no stranger to coding and IT.
But first, let's just work on getting some feedback, shall we?

So, here it is: The way to put Gumshoe in the courtroom, but not as a mere witness.

Spoiler: Basic plot
It's been six months since the end of Trials and Tribulations and things aren't looking good for good ol' Gumshoe. The famous defence lawyer Phoenix Wright has been disbarred, Maya Fey has left to take care of the Kurain temple, Kay Faraday has left to do her own thing, Franziska is off in Cohdopia and Edgeworth is now in shambles over Phoenix's situation. What does all this have to do with Gummy? A lot.

After his last salary revision, the precinct had finally decided to let the fine detective go. Gumshoe, now jobless, has no where to go. As he finally starts to give up hope, a little girl tugs on his coat. "Daddy wants to see you", she says, "he said he "has a plan"". Figuring he has nothing left to lose he follows the girl, gawking at the large top hat atop her head.

It's been a month since then, and Gumshoe once again needs to step foot within the court room. A new rookie is in town

Main Character: Dick Gumshoe
Major Characters: Phoenix Wright, Trucy Wright, Lana Skye*, Maggey Byrde, Ms. 'S'.
Minor Characters: Franziska von Karma, Miles Edgeworth, Kay Faraday, Ema Skye, Oldbag, Lotta Hart, Pearl Fey, Maya Fey, Larry Butz, Kristoph Gavin, Damon Gant, Dahlia Hawthorne.

* I've always wanted Lana back, and she's still in the country!

Cases

1. Turnabout Together
Spoiler: Case Details
It's Gumshoe's very first case...and he's not prepared at all. Having finally acquired his badge a mere two days ago his mentor, the tarnished Phoenix Wright, throws him into the action. A husband has seemingly killed his wife during an argument over lunch, a lunch to which his mother was supposed to attend had she got there earlier. As the first at the scene, her testimony rock solid. Can Gummy pull it off?

With Maggey at his side, nothing can stop him...except her latest job, leaving Trucy as his only backup. What will Gummy do?!

2. Prepare for Turnabout
Spoiler: Case Details
We now flash back to one week ago, the day of the MBE, the Multistate Bar Examination. It's Gumshoe's big day, he can finally become a defence attorney!...Not that he ever expected to be one. All things considered, his day is going pretty well. His pen has finally hit the paper, he knows he can pass the test...until a scream rings out down the corridor. His detective instincts kicking in again, he drops his pen and runs towards that shrill ice-breaking voice.

He finds a man slumped against the wall, draped in sweat. "Mr. Structor...he's dead...he's dead!". As students start to gather, Gumshoe puts his skills to work. I mean, what's the point of doing the exam now? No one can mark it!

While investigating Gumshoe receives help from the young, mysterious girl who calls herself 'S'. An aspiring defence attorney, she won't stop at anything to help her senior uncover the truth.

3. Prosecutor's Turnabout
Spoiler: Case Details
After his first successful case, Gumshoe decides to go and take a look at his former workplace. Standing out front of the Precinct, he stares at it, as if beckoning for it to take him back...well, he was doing until he notices the peculiar lady a few feet away from him. After eyeing her for a bit, Gumshoe decides to try and get her attention. Upon discovery, however, the woman flees. How strange.

Arriving back at Wright & Co. Law Offices (Guess who is the "Co.") he finds Phoenix greeting a woman...the same lady from before! After a brief explanation by Wright, we come to discover that this is, in fact, Lana Skye. After several years Lana has finally been released from prison after the resolution of the SL-9 incident and the discovery of her forgery. Observing Lana's experience of being both an attorney and detective, Wright asks her to give Gumshoe a few pointers. After which he leaves, saying something about his so-called "plan".

It turns out that a guard she met in prison has been arrested under suspicion of killing a long-time inmate and that she had hoped Phoenix Wright could acquit him. Instead, she ends up with Gumshoe!

Later on, at the courthouse, we again meet up with S, who is determined to help Gumshoe until she can one day become a defence attorney herself. She stands in for Lana for a short time as Lana seeks out vital evidence.

4. Old Dog, New Turnabout
Spoiler: Case Details
Gumshoe, out on a walk with S and Trucy to the corner store, is feeling a lot better. Things are finally looking up for him again, after all Lana did pay them a hefty sum for their efforts. While exiting the store he runs head on into what seems to be a big fluff ball. A big fluff ball? It's Missile!...with a leash on? Since when did he buy one of those?

After he was ousted from the force thanks to his incredibly low pay, he had to take Missile with him. In his misery he somehow lost Missile and he never got the chance to go looking for him. The dog doesn't seem happy though, he seems rather stressed. Barking, he bounds off, with Gumshoe in pursuit and S and Trucy in tow. That's where things end up getting crazy.

At the end of the dog's trail is a town house flat, a flat that smells of blood. Inside was the last thing he was expecting: A quadruple suicide...or was it a murder? With no witnesses, the police arrest the next door neighbour.

How will ol' Gummy figure this one out? Can his intellect even handle it? That neighbour better hope so!

5. Daddy's Little Turnabout (Name subject to change)
Spoiler: Case Details
At the request of a little girl, Gumshoe defends a mature man charged with a total of six murder charges to his name. With a lot of witnesses, Gumshoe will need all the help he can get. Will everyone be able to team up and save this man, or is he doomed to be executed by the swift hand of "justice"?

I can help you learning how to program on PWLib (and see it isn't complicated as it seems).

I may be busy working on AIGE, but I can help on MSN someone who will be using PWLib for a game.

It'd be great if you could. I'd like to make the game to the best of my ability.

This an interesting project.

hahaha that made me laugh.
You can use the "front view phoenix" sprites, but remember to give credit.
And if you need more poses for phoenix, there's an app for that I can help.

It was either that, or have Edgeworth show more of liking towards her than Gummy. xD

Oh, an app? Well, I probably wouldn't know how to use such an application anyway. I may actually need an OBJECTION pose for Gumshoe, based upon his AAI sprite.

I've updated the first post with the case descriptions. You guys might want to check that out.

I've also requested some help with voices and music, because I can record my voice...I just can't voice act, nor figure out how Gummy should sound. So, it'd be appreciated if someone could help. ^^

(Also, not sure if I'm allowed to double post when I have a project update, I checked the forum rules but I didn't see anything saying I couldn't. Next time I won't if I'm not supposed to, but other forums usually allow it.)

In about a week, I'll be getting a new computer, along with some new programming. If I can, I'd more than happly do some Gumshoe shouts.

That'd be excellent. If more than one person makes me some shouts, I'll choose the best ones (I doubt that'll happen though). After all, I'm in no rush here.

If you feel that you're up to it, that'd also be excellent. Have any examples of previous floor plans you've made?

On another note, I need to go and PM DL about some evidence sprites.

This game idea inspired me to learn PWLib scripting. <_<

For a while I was really hoping Lana would be the sidekick :sadshoe:
- She needs screentime lovin'
- Gumshoe needs adult supervision
- It'd be really nice to have a sidekick who isn't either an annoying, mildly insane teenage girl or Detective Gumshoe for a change (and now that the latter is the main character, this goes double), know what I'm saying?

She's not the permanent sidekick, all the girls get some lovin' this time. Maggey and Trucy in the first case, S in the second, Lana in the third, S and Lana in the fourth and S and Lana in the fifth (Maybe Trucy too). The thing is, Lana is probably going to be in the investigations more than S (as S loves the courtroom), due to being a long time detective.

Oh, it has inspired you, has it? Feel like helping out?

Also, it should be noted that I, myself, am a Lana fan. :lana:

Can't promise anything (uni work is already pretty taxing a mere three weeks into the semester and it's only going to get worse), but I'm definitely interested in helping out with coding and maybe dialogue writing.

Well, I'm right near some examinations myself, so this probably won't get rolling this week or next. This week and next will be resource gathering and dialogue. And don't worry, I'm just learning myself when it comes to scripting/coding. ^^

So Gumshoe was smart enough to pass the BAR, and is now a defense attorney slash investigator... And isn't in any way being the exact opposite of Edgeworth?

Just because he's a bumbling man doesn't mean he's a complete idiot. I think most forget that (He IS a detective. That's not something to shake a stick at). Also, I don't think I've mentioned Edgeworth's position...but for some reason I don't think he's going to approve nor accept Gummy's position any time soon.

I meant exact opposite as in AAI.

Yeah, and that makes no sense to me. Unless you mean being his partner, his opposite, in which case yes. He isn't Edgeworth's partner in this game, being the contrast to Edgey (Who appears smart and classy, while Gumshoe appears dumb and street-like, essentially comic-relief).

He would with about a month of coaching from Wright, it's just multiple choice after all. Besides, it's a video game! (Besides, saying Wright was smart enough to pass the test is questionable too. He doesn't show any signs of studying law. How about the Judge? He obviously hasn't studied law either, gathering you judge the book by it's cover)

Not trying to be mean or anything, but it IS a video game series that isn't very realistic. :pizzahat:

Yeah I get the feeling passing the BAR in ace attorney land is incredibly easy. I mean look at people like payne. Actually winning cases on the other hand, especially against such fierce competition the likes of the Von Karma's (although it seems like the prosecutors have gotten progressively easier since then), takes real panache.

I am surprised Gumshoe is still a detective. I mean they keep cutting his paycheck but never firing him? Maybe they like to keep him around as a punching bag lol.

Well, he's still a great character and would make a good protagonist. I'm just not so sure it would make sense for him to square off against any kind of lawyers, who continually best him in even the investigation part of every investigation. I would much rather play gumshoe as an aid to the prosecutor - similar to AAI except you square off against your partner instead of the villain.

Maybe instead of finding a contradiction in their statement, you have to find the spot where the evidence will make the point stick. So it will be a normal logic squaring off between lawyer and someone else, but you present the evidence at a certain time to make the lawyers argument stronger. It could be like a tug of war, where instead of the penalty bar starting full and going down, it starts in the middle. Each time you emphasize a good point with the right evidence, the bar goes to the right; each time the evidence doesn't really match the bar goes to the left. If the bar gets to the right, your lawyer has one, through the aid of lovably bumbling gumshoe :)

Anyway, that's just one idea, but I'm still interested in whatever you do with this. Good luck with the project!

It will be funny in a few years to see how many side characters have gotten their own fangame ;)

It doesn't seem like much logic is needed to win a case in Ace Attorney either. Wright is constantly winning by thinking outside of the box, by making no logical sense according to the evidence. The only people who really seem like they've studied and actually use their head is Edgeworth and Mr. von Karma (Franny may have studied, but her head seems to not really be on straight).

You idea would be good for something like a sequel, but I have a feeling that then Gumshoe wouldn't really be involved and that it may get a little bit boring. I mean, it must be very boring for Maya and Trucy to just sit and watch their partner do everything.

There was supposed to be something there, right? :eh?:
The point is, is that the AA universe is pretty different to our own. I don't think Gumshoe is an idiot, and I don't really think the MBE is really all that hard for them (they streamlined the court process. I wouldn't be surprised if they did the same for the exam).

Because "exact opposite" can mean a lot of things. AAI is a game, where you investigate crime scenes and interrogates witnesses.

This will use the classic style of gameplay.

This is going no where, forget I even said anything. :meekins:
Although I do wanna see where this project leads nonetheless.

Or did you mean because Gumshoe is the main character, the popular characters will he his partner? Is that the "exact opposite" you were going for? :shoe:

No matter the small details, I think this will turn out good.

I've recieved Lana Skye's voice clips from Rina-chan, a girl posting in my music and voice request thread. Still waiting on Gumshoe's, which should come to me in about a week.

I'll probably need some voice samples for 'S' as well, for the two times she appears in an actual court room.

Yeah I think so too. You're probably right that taking a more passive role might be a bit boring.

Ace Attorney Odd Jobs: Dick Gumshoe.

It doesn't feel too enticing.

I just hope I can get some more sprite workers to help out, cause Auraion doesn't have all the time in the world.

If I can't get any original music, I've decided to use Confrontation ~ Presto as Gumshoe's Pursuit ~ Cornered theme, since it does fit. I'll just pull my favourite musical selections from all the games and use them as my musical score, it'll work.

Well, I'm sure that I can correct doors and align walls. I can show you how I do doors, if you wish. It's easier if you use the circle tool, and then erase the parts of the circle you don't need.

But, yeah, good. You'll do fine.

Things are steadily progressing. I basically have the entirety of the first case , I just need to put it into the template I found on the help topic for making fan games (To make sure the sentances aren't too long for each box).

Auarion should have the first 'S' sprite done some time as well.

There is a ways to go, but things are going in the right direction so far.

Hey man, if you need any help with graphics of any variety, I'd be happy to lend an occasional hand. I'm not FANTASTIC at anything, but I'm pretty great at lots of things, if you catch my drift. :P Drawn art is a no-no, but I can frankensprite/do touch-ups (GS or GK style), do maps/floor maps, evidence, case artwork, that sort of stuff. Basically as long as I don't have to do too much ORIGINAL WORK (but I can do some small touch-ups with pixels just fine) I can do stuff. :D Lemme know if you're interested either way, no real fuss if not.

I took a look at your stuff, and I think I may have a request for you. It'd be nice if you could do a few already-known characters in new poses that older characters have already done...if you get my drift.

Since I currently do not have enough time to work on the dialogue due to my current exams, I have begun working on a trailer.

Just a quick update.

I've done around 1 minute of the trailer, and I should be recieving Gumshoe's voice sample today (PMs) are at hand. I may have to wait till after the OC comp for S' sprite.
