In any case, while I am lacking citation, a poll some long while back did show that Mario had more recognition than Mickey Mouse. (The further back it is, the more significant, because I certainly haven't seen Disney getting more popular in the past decade)

The fact that Phoenix was even in the contest in the first place is a miracle, given that the entire PW series has sold maybe 300,000 copies outside Japan. Halo 3 sold more than that in one day. So Phoenix being a big enough name to get into the contest is an achievent in and of itself.
And I fully attribute that achievement to the fandom being very outspoken about the game, as a result of the game being, y'know, fantastic and all.
