well, here it is. after much clamoring was made for a translation, here is gyakuten kenji manga chapter 1, scanlated.

as an introduction, let me tell you a little bit about myself. i was a plain cr forumgoer for a long time (in fact, if you can find my posts from a year and a half ago, they're surprisingly different from the way i post today). after a while i began to hang out in the #cr irc channel, where i met a lot of great folks, including chiko, the former head of the cr scanlation team.

chiko and wooster were hoping to revitalise the scanlation projects. johnny (johnny rainbow) and myself mentioned to wooster that we'd like to help out, and we were adopted into the cr scan group earlier this year. several months passed without us really being able to help with anything, and no releases were put out. it was at this point, a few weeks ago, that tuesday mentioned that her friends had begun translation of the GK manga into chinese. she told us that she could, from there, translate it into english.

it was at this point that the scan team decided to pick the project. since the scanlation of the official gyakusai manga had been stalled for a long time, we decided that, for now, we'd release the rest of that manga that we have finished (look for chapter 4 in the very near future) and instead focus on the gyakuten kenji manga. i talked to chiko and she just does not have the time for the scan group anymore, so i volunteered to take over it. as of now, i am the new captain of the scanlation team, and i am hoping to lead it in a direction where we can release the backlog of manga that we have to catch up on.

so! without further ado, here is chapter 1 of the manga: mediafire

thanks, and i hope you enjoy the manga.

in addition, i'd like to put out an open call for members to the scanlation team. we need at least 2 translators (japanese, of course) and 2 people who are experienced/competent enough with photoshop to do cleaning of the raws - bonus if you can do warp correction. if you would like to apply for either of these positions, pm me with a short explanation of who you are, how often you would be able to do work on the manga, and an example of some of your work (for translators this isn't necessary, just let me know what your proficiency with the language is like). i'd love to get this manga out in a timely fashion, but if the team doesn't get more members, we really won't be able to do it!

But um... I downloaded it, and when I unzipped it, the only folder in there was called MACOSX or something like that. I didn't see any scans. ^_^;;

Hrm. It still doesn't work in WinZip for me, but when I opened it in WinRAR, that seemed to do the trick. Almost like the files were hidden in WinZip for some reason. *shrugs* Ah well.

I find that you can read it just fine it WinRAR, but when you try to extract it, it doesn't work...

yeah, i'm sure you can guess that this is a pretty kanji-intensive manga, haha

that's part of it, yeah. cleaning is basically adjusting the levels so that it goes from this to this, and clearing out as much of the spots in the images as possible. it's not that big or hard of a job, but it's better if you are at least somewhat familiar with the idea and can use photoshop well.

where do you mean? i don't see any spots on that page, aside from the tears on the left.

There are large white spots (not the dots from the shading, but larger) at the top. I guess you'd just leave them alone?

Just clone around it, or use some texture from other pages.
If this doesn't help enough then you can add a gradient layer on the background with semi-transparency. (which you should do often to highlight certain parts)

But enough PS babble, this belongs more in the scanlation section. :p

I seem to be having a bit of a problem downloading it, though: when I click on the link in MediaFire to download the ZIP file, all it offers to download for me is an 'unknown file type' (23.4MB in size) which seems to change names every time I try to download it. .____. do you have WinRar? the file is a .rar type and you need that to extract it.

Good job with the chapter.

Just a side little note, I do want to mention that cleaning up scans is not just a case of playing with the light/contrast and clearing text boxes, It can be slow and very boring! Unless I suck and do it all wrong haha, which is possible.

But who doesn't want to work towards helping out the fan base and being called a scanlator along with the other illustrious members?

well, you can extract it by clicking on 'wizard' while winrar is open. is there something else happening that's stopping you?

i think the problem is that i threw in a period after "Ch" in the name of the file. try removing that period, it might muck it up on windows.

For all the technubs struggling with WinRAR to access the files (which last I checked had to be paid for after the trial anyway and sucked):

Your life begins anew.

(This should also solve any issues with running headfirst into a MACOSX remnant. If I remembered what exactly that pain in the ass was, I'd tell you.)

Does we even do these things anymore?
