Wasn't expecting this to pop up until Jump Festa later today, but here we are!

Oricon reports that the Ace Attorney anime will be directed by Ayumu Watanabe of A-1 Pictures, with music by Kaoru Wada. The main cast is as follows:

  • Yuuki Kaji as Phoenix Wright
  • Aoi Yuuki as Maya Fey
  • Masashi Tamaki as Miles Edgeworth
  • Chie Nakamuara as Mia Fey
  • Masami Iwasaki as Dick Gumshoe
  • Tooru Nara as Larry Butz

The show will air weekly Saturdays at 5:30 PM JST on Yomiuri Television and Nippon Television channels.

[OC Contest voting is starting soon - watch this space!]

Update: according to folks who attended the panel, the anime will cover the first two games in the series.

Exciting! Never heard of the director before, apparently he mostly does Doraemon movies, but he did a few episodes of Space Brothers, so I think we'll be alright. Plus, A1 is a good studio, so I'm pretty confident that the show won't be as bad as Danganronpa. Any news on what the plot will be? The poster suggests a trilogy retread, but you never know...

So, Phoenix is Eren Yeager from Attack on Titan/Yukine from Noragami? Interesting. Haven't heard of many of the other voice actors though.

Hope Estheim decided to become a lawyer instead of technical leader of the world.
Aika, the liked comic relief restaurant worker from Persona 4, will now EAT the ramen she delivered.
Naruto-Ninja Sakura is now a channeled spirit. (Or Abyss' Albiore flyer Noel)
One of the tennis-princes is turning into a detective.
And Blueford from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is now comic relief... please don't give Larry a big role... he's not funny comic relief, he's just obnoxious.

Couldn't find anything about Edgey's seiyuu, though several of these guys also worked in Pokémon X/Y.

Hmm... I was kinda disappointed that they changed the anime's seiyuus... I like the games' seiyuu already... :larry:

Seiyuu comparison time!

Game!Nick: Takayuki Kondou
Anime!Nick: Kaji Yuuki (also voiced as Eren from Attack on Titan/Yukine from Noragami/Totsuka from K/Shu from Guilty Crown, imagine him singing 'Circle of Friends'... :edgey: )

Game!Maya (as in the AA123 drama cd): Hanamura Satomi
Anime!Maya: Yuuki Aoi (also voiced as Iris from Pokemon BW anime/Kinako from Inazuma Eleven GO! 2)

Game!Edgeworth: Takemoto Eiji (also voiced as Kunzite from Sailor Moon Crystal/Kumagami from Charlotte, personally I like Takemoto as Edgey though)
Anime!Edgeworth: Tamaki Masashi (ummm... never heard of him)

Game!Gumshoe (as in drama cds and trailers): Ishii Kouji
Anime!Gumshoe: Iwasaki Masami

Game!Mia: Oohara Sayaka
Anime!Mia: Nakamura Chie (also voiced as Sakura from Naruto, wow, rly? :eh?: )

Game!Larry: Onosaka Masaya (also voiced as Jadeite from Sailor Moon (the classic one ofc)/Don Patch from the Bo-bobo anime)
Anime!Larry: Nara Tooru (well, I guess I've ever heard of his name somewhere...)

I don't know what to say, but if Franziska ever got an appearance (or if they got a season 2), please let her seiyuu be Sawashiro Miyuki!!!
uhh... still waiting for a new sig to be made...

Hah. I even called Kaji as Phoenix. I fucking hate Kaji Yuuki in any role where he plays a whiny little bitch (Eren, Haru, Yukine, dickwad from Ao Haru Ride), but he's great in non-bitch roles (Sonic, glasses-kun from Nisekoi, Hilmes). I can see him doing well as Nick.

Disappointed that Takehito Koyasu isn't Edgeworth cause I wanted to hear DIO-sama's objection.

Wada as the composer! I guess most people here won't know him by name, but he's a pretty good composer. He's been responsible for The Kindaichi Case Files (and the currently running sequel Kindaichi Returns) soundtrack for example (some examples from his Kindaichi soundtracks: the main theme and the sub main theme. Pretty excited to see what he'll do for this series.

By the way, Hosoboso also mentions Atsuhiro TOMIOKA as the head writer for the series. Does a lot of children's series like Pokemon and Inazuma Eleven. Also worked on series like Kindaichi Case Files R, Hikaru no Go and Prince of Tennis.

So the anime will get a daytime timeslot, heh? That's pretty good (and surprising) news, I was expecting a late-night timeslot (around 11PM-2AM). That's pretty good news. Capcom is really serious about promoting the AA series, it seems. Then again, it doesn't really have any questionable material (fan service, extreme violence), so I guess it wasn't that much of a problem.

And since the anime covers the first two games, I take it it will be 2 cours (6 months). Another fantastic news. The new dub is... I dunno, didn't really get to hear the JP VA.

A few folks who attended the Jump Festa show also say that Takumi's in a consulting role on the project - tweaking the script, stuff like that. Hopefully we'll get more details once the JP news sites put out their official reports.

Actually, this was the time-slot I was expecting: The Kindaichi Case Files R is running now in that slot (17:30~18:00) and it forms the hour of mystery anime on Yomiuri together with Detective Conan (which starts at 18:00). R will continue into the winter cour, and then Ace Attorney will take over in the spring to continue Yomiuri's hour of mystery anime.

Which also means that both Wada (music) and Tomioka (script) don't move at all, as both worked on Kindaichi R. Also: you should try playing Wada's Kindaichi Case Files theme faster: it kinda sounds like a Pursuit theme :D

I kind of have the feeling they'll keep Mia alive a little longer. Just to flesh her out a bit more - and maybe make Phoenix' reaction to her death more understandable. (In the game, they never alluded to anything like friendship between them past the professional level, so his intense reaction came off a bit strangely to me)

Oh, I didn't know that. Pretty interesting. They're going for the Kindaichi audience, it seems. Pretty clever move.

And man, you made me want to watch that anime... is the original necessary at all? 150+ episode may be a bit too much for me at the moment, ha ha.

irishmarcoos wrote:

Definitely 2 cours, so around 24 episodes.

The thing is, that tweet from Hoso Boso confirms the anime will adapt both AA1 and 2, but that there will also be some original episodes too.

Unless they rush through the story (by only focusing on the final case of each game... and even doing that would be really rushing it since there's also original episodes), there's no way it'll be less than 2 cours.

What's more, the timeslot (daytime, taking the spot of one of the most popular anime airing at the moment) means they're treating it as a major anime, so 2 cours sound about right.

Just the first two games? Ah well, I hope we get a Godot cameo somewhere, I'd love to see an anime version of him. I wonder how they're going to adapt the less well received cases (Turnabout Big Top), like if they'll change certain aspects that rubbed people the wrong way or not.

Adaptation but with a few original episodes? Great. This was kinda what I was hoping for.

Man I don't know what I'm more hyped for right now, this, AA6, or Turnabout Musical fan project finally releasing their whole soundtrack in 9 days time with a livestream! Yeesh.

I better go finish playing the other games too :bellboy:

It was fairly obvious that (the currently running) Kindaichi R season 2 wouldn't be more than two cour because there's little left to animate and it's obvious YTV wants to retain the mystery hour (for viewer retention), so having Ace Attorney fill the slot of Kindaichi R makes a lot of sense. It's not necessary to see the original series by the way; The Kindaichi Case Files has always been a very case-centric series with few recurring characters. I think a lot of people who watch R on Crunchyroll have never seen the original TV series.

(And while you're at Crunchyroll, I recommend the Angel Heart drama if you're into City Hunter :P)

I hope they won't change the order of cases or anything... A-1 made Magic Kaito 1412 and changed the order of some of the manga files. Some of it made sense but others messed up the plot.

Well, if Season 1 is successful, I have no doubt there'll be a Season 2 covering AA3. Find it pretty surprising they're covering the first two games (not just AA1), though I guess that 2-4 case would make for a perfect finale.

Ha ha, I wouldn't really say I love City Hunter, though I really remember that one (grew up watching it on TV). Should definitely rewatch it first before watching anything else :p

I'll try to keep in mind the drama too.

And thanks for the Kindaichi anime details. Maybe I'll go and watch the original too, while I'm at it. Reading about it got me interested, actually.
