"Wh-What? 'Playing dead?'" Helios asked incredulously. "...We are looking at the same corpse here, right?"

After some investigation--the group has some findings.

Einstein was happily wagging his tail at some spot. When the group went over they found that he discovered a bloody tarp. After the group looked at each other and the lack of blood on each, it seemed that this was used for cover. Barring murder->suicide theories in this case.

The surrounding area doesn't indicate much. There's a depression in the grass where the killer could've been waiting behind a hedge but there's no way to tell who that was.

Bradley searches through the bodies and finds nothing suspicious, but did pull out Albert's headset.

"Uh...can someone explain what this is again?" Bradley asked.

"It's a headset. But Albert said it didn't work." Helios began to raise it towards the head.

"Didn't he wear that every time he went crazy?"

"Did he?"

"..."

Midge doesn't find anything sorting around Albert's intestines. Frustrated, she goes to the shed and returns with some lighter fluid. She pours some on Albert and lights a match, throwing it on.

"Can you hear anything?" Bradley asked Helios seeing him put on the headset "It was a-always a little weird he would wear that. I wonder why Miss Null left it with him." Bradley knelt down to gently pet Einstein who was a very good boy and he told him that. "So...this sheet..." he looks at the tarp "What do you think it was used to cover?" he looked around at the various holes Bradley had dug on his first visit here "Do you suppose that something might have been buried here that they wanted to protect?"

“One thing we know for certain, we can’t split up again.” Teddy grumbled, looking around. “Wait a second, where the fuck is Helios?!”

“Oh I’m right here!” Helios yelled, walking through the garden door. It appeared he had stepped out.

“You gotta be shitting me.”

What? I know how to use it.” Helios assured, holding his pump-action shotgun securely, finger just off the trigger.

“Where did you get that?” Adriana’s eyes widened.

“The armory. I decided to investigate Ghost and found he had the key on him. Don’t worry, it’s just for self-defense.”

“Self-defense, my ass!” Teddy protested.

“Excuse me, there’s a serial killer out here. This is for safety. I've been hunting with my Dad, I'm not some scared child with this.”

"Admittedly, I'm more concerned about why Ghost had the key to the armory hidden in his boot," Helios said, calmly pointing the shotgun at the ground. "Oh, and as for Albert's weird headset doo-dad, I didn't hear anything."

Midge coughs, flecks of blood getting on her hand.

"Dammit! I was about to say maybe we should go check if Ghost reanimated. I don't wanna believe one of us is the killer. Doesn't seem like he did if he was still just laying there with all those wounds."

"We still don't have a motive, it seems like someone here just wants to cut people open. Like that's it, all the organs were there, they didn't have vaccines, Albert still had his headgear. They were both killed with a weapon as improbably as the shears. It seems like whoever cut them open just wanted to see, and that's it..."

Bradley looked at the others, fear evident in his eyes "I-I mean...we all split up...there can't have been that many suspects...who split up to go with Albert and Emma?"

"We actually all went to separate rooms." Teddy elucidated. "So it can be anyone."

The group decided it was best to get out of the room with the bodies so they headed to the lounge.

****************

What are we supposed to do now?

The group was in the lounge, trying to think of what to do next. They had one hour left. And the lack of vaccines wasn’t their only problem now…

“We have no clues, no vaccines, nothing.” Helios sighed. “All we can do is hope the serial killer is forced to make a move? And even if we get them, then what?”

“They probably just did for their own sick satisfaction.” Midge guessed. “I don’t think they’ll attack again, and we might just die from the virus.”

“So should we keep looking for vaccines?” Teddy asked. “But as a group?”

It seemed like the suspects were clear.

Adriana. Helios. Midge. Teddy.

...Bradley and Violet. They couldn’t be ruled out either. Each person tried to recount everything they’ve learned.

“...I know who the killer is. And if I’m right...there’s still a way to get a vaccine.”

“Who? How?”

They pointed their finger directly across from them. Right at…

Spoiler: Catch-Up
Everything before this post is fine.

You can also check the info doc. I'll update it more with the other timelines when I'm less busy in the coming days but it should have the necessary A material. The characters will remember the doors they went through but nothing about The Challenger trial or after, essentially.

Adriana...you said we could take the proper precautions if we did your plan. What are they?” Ghost asked.

“Simple stuff. Don’t interact with anyone else who isn’t wearing the proper gear. If we do interact with anyone by accident, we have to make sure they come with us. We should also take the syringes with us so they can reverse-engineer anything left into a viable vaccine. And if it’s possible to leave this place with hazmat suits of our own...we should.”

Everybody seemed...a bit more comfortable with the plan.

“Not the worst idea in the world.” Albert grumbled. “Just gotta make sure we’re not reckless.”

“Alright seems like we decided. We’ll go with your plan.” Ghost nodded. “I’ll administer the vaccines, so nobody gets more than they should.”

“What’s the plan again…?” Bradley asked.

We each partially cure ourselves to survive long enough open the 9 door. Then we call for help, letting them know of our situation.

Everybody ended up being injected (besides Ghost), even those who had been against the plan. Each adult got 10% of the total vaccine while the kids got 20%. Ghost made sure to sterilize the needle over a flame before each injection.

Everybody seemed to feel a little better about the plan after initial injection. Already some color had returned to everyone’s faces.

“Man…” Violet smiled. “I feel waaaaay better.”

“Same.” Helios chuckled. “It feels like I just took a nap after staying awake for a week.”

“What should we do now?”

Teddy walked out of the area, towards the lounge. Everyone followed him. He uncapped a bottle of bourbon from the bar and poured a small glass. “We wait. Unless anyone’s got better ideas.”

“Maaaaan, I don’t wanna wait for four hours.” Bradley mumbled. “Miss Null, are there any more games?”

“All games are in the game room.” Null replied.

“I didn’t see any Mystery Date.” Midge cackled. “You got that?”

“Can you please reword the question, Midge?”

“...do you have the game, Mystery Date?”

“I’m sorry. I don’t have an answer.”

Albert’s eyes widened. He pantomimed to everyone to not say anything.

“Null, how many fingers am I holding up?” Albert held up four fingers.

“Four.”

“Albert, what are you doing?” Emma asked.

He put his hand up, still thinking. “One person stand on one foot. Nobody say who it is.”

Everyone looked perplexed at Albert. Eventually, Violet stood on one foot. Silently, Albert motioned to her, telling her to stand on two feet again. She did so.

“Null, who’s standing on one foot?”

“Violet.”

Albert’s face paled. “I...don’t understand.”

“What the fuck’s going on?!” Teddy yelled. “I thought you were watching us?! How did you get the wrong answer?!”

“I’m sorry. I must’ve misheard the question.” Null explained.

“That’s not it…” Albert winced. “She’s a recording...or some kind of conditional, imperfect AI.”

"But we've asked a lot of specific questions." Ghost reminded. "And she still knew the amount of fingers you held up, and that it would've been Violet on one foot had you not told her otherwise..."

"...I don't have an answer to that."

“Why would she pretend to be in another location then?” Bradley nervously looked at the others around him, the answer dawning on him. Everybody seemed to share a similar thought.

Is Null...one of us?

"I... don't really get it," Ghost said, wringing their hands. "What's the explanation? I can't imagine Null would infect *themselves* with Blight-Z... Even just being near us would probably be enough to get infected, right?"

"Maybe they're immune to it?" Violet thought aloud. "Or maybe they aren't, and they're wearing a something to protect themselves." She eyed Ghost suspiciously.

"I mean, there's a vaccine, maybe one of the people around here took it before we all woke up. Maybe one of us is just fine, and they're pretending to be sick."

Midge leans forward, her brow furrowed.

"This whole thing is just running itself? What's Null going to get out of it by playing?

She suddenly sits up straight, pointing lazily at Albert.

"Hey Albert, you're a scientist guy right? What do you study? It probably matches with one of Null's interests. I'm not trying to be accusatory."

"I don't really get it either... But Ghost is obviously still the most suspicious," Helios observed, "Still, I suppose it could just be someone else who has an easy out built in for when things get down to the wire... Unless they're just a wacko who doesn't care if they die."

The senator sighed. "Still, it must've taken a lot of time and money to set this whole thing up to run on it's own. I'm not even sure if that something like that would be possible..."

"B-but, I don't get it, if Null's one of us, why'd she have such difficulty answering Midge's question the first time?" Ghost asked. "And why didn't she notice Violet put her leg down?"

"I think the idea is that Null is some strange, artificial intelligence thing," Helios said, shrugging. "So if Null was one of us, they wouldn't actually be talking through the, uhh, other Null directly...I think."

Helios sighed and rested his hand on a nearby wall, giving the others annoyed looks. "Okay, this is just getting confusing! Anyone got any weird nicknames we could give to these rascals?!"

"But this hypothetical AI would be advanced enough to answer most of our questions correctly and tell what is going on here by watching us, yet somehow be too slow to tell Violet had put her foot down." Emma pointed out. "I'm not sure something like that is possible. Null could just be trying to make us suspect each other."

"The AI is just an AI, I don't think it deserves a name," Midge says in a husky voice.

"Though, I guess if we're calling it Null now, it doesn't really make sense to change it's name. I guess we just need a name for the mastermind behind all of this. We still have some leftover names from back before we named Einstein. How about calling the mastermind 'Ice'? Or 'I See Nice Tin'?" She suddenly cracks a smile and guffaws. "Whatever, it's all the same to me anyway."

"It's true that Null could be messing with us, but I doubt it would've occurred to Null on the fly to respond to my question so weirdly just so that we suspect one another. I mean kudos if she did, sick prank for sure."

Adriana shrugged. "I guess the direct approach is as valid as any other. Still, there does seem to be some time lag between when we ask it questions and when it answers. It seems... unlikely... that one of us is directly controlling Null's answers via input, but... Maybe a sort of... machine-learning algorithm that acts with information gathered from surveillance and perhaps some limited input from a controller. That way, it might be a sort of (pseudo-)'artificial intelligence' AND one of us could be Null as well. Well... sort of, at least."

“I believe I’ve told you before that I was a ‘broke college kid’?”, Albert replies drily to Midge. “If you’re implying what I think you’re implying, that’s ridiculous. I was the one who just deduced the fact that Null is with us. It makes no sense for me to purposefully incriminate myself when I could remain silent about it and nobody would be the wiser. …Either way, I’m not sure who Null even could be. The voice appears female but it could also be synthesised, so there’s no leads there.” He shakes his head and mutters to himself in disdain, eyeing the others carefully.

Bradley pointed at Albert's lab-coat "But a college is still like a really big school. You could be studying a science or something. What even is it that you are studying." He crossed his arms, his brow furrowed deep in thought.

"Still it bothers me...this way of injecting. Null told us there wasn't enough injections for all of us so...by splitting it this way we might have doomed some of us later on." He sighed clearly worried by the thought. "Still I do feel a lot healthier at least." He said

"Thinking about Miss Null, I don't see why she would be one of us otherwise she'd have known about Violet stepping down." He looked around the ceiling trying to spot hidden cameras "Maybe it's just a...time lag...or something on whatever recording Null is watching of us?"

"Tch. What even makes me so special to you, kid?" Albert scowls, putting his hand on his head in frustration. "Not like I'm the only one here who's stayed silent about this. Is my field that special? 'Cause I don't think it is. Either way, maybe when Care-Bear over there tells us more about him, then maybe I'll indulge you. ...Or if he doesn't, I can spill the beans for him."

Adriana shrugged. "Well, there you have it. Either Null is controlled by some random guy that can spy on us, Null is a proper AI, or Null is lying and it's pointless to question her on this topic anymore."

"Either that, or one of us isn't wearing our bracelet, I guess" she conceded. "That doesn't mean that one of us can't be working with Null, or whatnot, just that Null him... her... them self isn't directly one of us. Or, you know, they're lying."

A cry of agony is suddenly heard. It appears to be coming from Albert. As he looks up again he takes a deep breath. "Oh...hell." He seems to be back to normal again. Bradley regarded Albert warily surprised by his defensive answer and sudden personality shift "Uh...I was just asking you a question Mr Albert. We were trying to figure out what was going on and so knowing what you study could be helpful. I didn't mean to upset you." He uttered apologetically.

"B-but...we could always go to the games room...or play frisbee with Einstein," he paused to pet the good boy "or read in the library if we are looking for something to do!"

"Great Albert, once again you're very insightful. Clearly Null just put a completely random college student in their game and there's absolutely no pattern that might relate back to your field of study. This whole nullification game has been kind of weak sauce though. Who cares what the point of it was if we can get the hell out of here soon?"

Midge brushes her mane back, and then stands up.

"Well, I'm game for whatever game everyone wants to play; I love a good board game. Though, if Null don't know about Mystery Date, you gotta imagine Null probably doesn't have much life experience, you know?"

It was about twenty minutes before the door was meant to open, and everybody was hanging out in the game room. Some people were playing board games, the specifics of which I'm sure can be specified in future posts.

“Where are you going, Emma?” Midge asked.

“I’d like to investigate a theory before I leave.”

Teddy stood up. “What theory?”

“I thought I noticed a loose panel in the main foyer. If the wires are attached to the broadcast system, well I’m not sure admittedly but it might be possible to tell if the loudspeaker source is internal or external.”

“Huh?” Albert asked. “How could you tell?”

“I doubt it’ll yield anything.” Emma admitted. “I just thought it was worth checking.”

“We’re not splitting up, that’s ridiculous.” Helios sighed. “Especially not this close to the deadline.”

“I can go with her.” Adriana volunteered.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, sounds like it could be useful if she’s right.”

Helios nodded. “Alright, that does make me feel better then. Go ahead.”

Adriana led the way, with Emma closing the door behind her. The others went back to their games for the most part. All that was left now was to wait for the deadline...

Midge laughs into her hands, as to not accidentally hack up blood. The whole time everyone is playing board games, she seems like she is having a lot of fun.

She sighs and leans back from the others, watching the door, biting her lip.

"You know, three's a safer number than two... Maybe someone else should have gone? This is giving me a really bad feeling."

"O-oh, hell....Yeah, I agree with Midge. T-this might go wrong if someone turns on the other...but that won't go wrong, will it..? Right, Ghost?" He beckoned to Ghost, whom he was currently playing Battleships with (and losing with 4-1).

"Due to the partial vaccines we all have a chance of survival," Ghost replied, already setting up for a new round. "And because we used the two vaccines we had, there's nothing to fight over. I... don't think there's much cause for concern. Null wanted the limited vaccines to divide us, but we found a new solution that she didn't expect. We beat her!"

"Heh...fair. Thanks, man", Albert says, cracking what vaguely resembles a grin. "M-maybe we'll get out of this in one piece..."

EDIT: [timeskip]

After a while, a huge whoop came from Albert, a much wider grin on his face now. "I f-finally did it again! I sunk your battleship, Ghost!" He seemed very proud of it, almost as if their respective RPers had just participated in an actual online game of battleships in which Albert's RPer won. "M-man, you're a formidable foe! Or were, anyway."

"Tch. If only. If only all of this were so simple."

"You make a good point, Ghost. I guess there's no obvious reason why anything might happen. There would have to be some sort of secret grudge between the two for anything bad to happen, I suppose. That or one of them could be Null, and is looking to shake up the game not that we've seemingly circumvented most of it."

Midge rubs her temples a little.

"Jeez, I wish I could say why this is bothering me so much. It's not like either of those things are that likely to be true."
