Jump Festa is currently running in Japan right now, and DGS is present both in playable demo and stage show format!

Most of the new info coming out of the show pertains to the game's first case. Let's start with some images, including our first look at the Japanese judge:

Spoiler: Case one characters
Image Image

The solider witness' full name is Taizou Uzukumaru, while the old man is Sanmon Sonohigurashi. During the trial, Ryuunosuke yelled "SIR!" in place of "HOLD IT!" when pressing the witnesses, and even after consulting Asougi he wasn't able to come up with much in the way of useful questioning.

The case's defendant was also revealed (as Japanese-speakers will see in the above screenshots):

Spoiler: Case one premise
Ryuunosuke himself is on trial! The two witnesses testify to seeing a student who looked just like Ryuunosuke at the cafe where the murder took place. Details of the victim remains under wraps for the moment.

The playable demo featured an updated version of the Joint Reasoning demo from TGS, but attendees have been asked not to spoil the "Russian man"'s identity, so don't expect any new news there.

Finally, while no release date was announced, Takumi and producer Kojima stated that development is making significant progress, and that they hope to steadily provide new info in the new year. Hopefully a release isn't that far off!

"Sonohigurashi"... What a long name!

I'm starting to get more and more hyped for this game! I love how it actually is a Payne ancestor that's the prosecutor!

As for the names:

Sergeant UZUKUMARU Taizou: uzukumaru (verb) means to crouch. He's in the Imperial Army, which usually means both the marine and army, but I think the title 軍曹 (sergeant) is for the army. (though MARU is often a suffix to ship-names). And I still think that MARU is sorta meant to connect with a 'German-sounding' name, because of his Kaiser-mustache.

SONOHIGURASHI Sanmon: sonohigurashi means scraping by day by day. Sanmon means literally three mon (money unit), so very little money. (c.f. 二束三文, three-penny opera).

Hmm, Japanese judge has a bushy black beard. Could it possibly be the same judge from modern AA?

Awesome. Little worried about no release date still but can't wait for some footage or a new trailer.

"SIR?" That seems like a rather weird thing to say when interrupting witness testimony. I'd guess that it's the "HAI" bubble from one of the trailers, but that, too, doesn't seem right at all. (Sorry if I missed something very basic. My understanding of Japanese at this point is rather inconsistent in cases where it exists at all.)

Clearly.

Can we expect footage of this to be posted at some point?

That would be brilliant if it actually was dear old Udgey in his younger days :D
He looks more serious with a black beard.

I don't care if they confirm it or not. It's part of my headcanon now.

Of course, the clincher would be him having a younger brother with an odd accent.

Hey, we already knew the Judge was immortal. He didn't change at all between Turnabout Reminiscence and Dual Destinies. All this does is confirm that he actually ages.

I actual think this must not be him, for that very reason. If this were him his beard would be fluffy and white, as it has been for all time

Spoiler:
What bothers me the most at this point is why this trial has to be classified and why the judge looks like that Russian revolutionary. What is this, the preface to a game plot's conspiracy?

It's just an utterance of a salute, rather than a reply to anything.

It could be worse. He could have said it like Mailer from the Layton Crossover game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkAn9LXhmBw (look at the 52 second mark).

Oh geez, I always had to mute my 3DS every time she showed up.

So..... This judge also has a beard, and the first prosecutor has the shades like Payne. Past relatives for present day relatives for everyone. Good to know.....

Since this game's story takes place somewhere in Japan time, I have a feeling we won't see this game over seas. But I can still hope, I guess.

That's only the first case. The rest takes place in London and has Sherlock Holmes. I have a feeling it's next to impossible to keep it from being localized.

If it's not localized, though, I am going to be seriously pissed, since there's no way we could get a fan translation like we did with GK2, unless someone figures out how to emulate a 3DS...!!

Doesn't have to be an emulation, running modified apps on retail hardware is a valid option there. But yeah, that is a large challenge too. One that Nintendo isn't happy to help with.

Well, Mario Kart 7's got its first custom track to download, so there are the beginnings of eventual pathways to 3DS editing. It'll just be a while.

But seeing as the game is set in London, and Takumi's games have all been localised, a proper localisation is probably gonna happen.

Hmmmm... I have a feeling about this case... I'm going to take a really big guess at something.
Spoiler:
This is my prediction for whom the murderer is, so don't read it if you don't want to see it.
Spoiler:
I think past-Wright's assistant/buddy/lawyer friend is going to be the killer. "The two witnesses testify to seeing a student who looked just like Ryuunosuke at the cafe where the murder took place." I mixed up him and his lawyer friend when I first saw his pictures, so perhaps he's actually the killer!

This is probably wrong, but I might as well guess! If I nail it, I'm going to throw myself a party. :redd:

I think that would be really lazy, as we already had something like this in AJ. Maybe Takumi just wants us to think that's the case and then everything turns out to be different?

I'd think Takumi would go for something a little more reminiscent of Nick's first or second case. This is supposedly Ryuu's first case (or among his first cases), so there's plenty of nostalgia to play with there.
Spoiler:
Besides, Asougi is totally going to die somehow. Call it a gut feeling or due to some clever wordplay, no matter. I'd say it'd have to be someone pretty sharp to snipe a guy like him out, and maybe manage to flee without it turning into another case held in Japan. I like the idea of chasing a villain off into a new country. It's about time.
