I'm pretty sure it is, but if it isn't- does it really matter? There's lots of names that work as both personal and surnames. Take Lawrence, for example.
Weird, never heard anyone with a surname of Gavin, I know tons of folks with the first name as Gavin though.
My friend's last name is Galvin, and thats the closest that I've ever heard.
But their surname isn't supposed to be German anyway. The Garyuus were half American originally, but they still had very Japanese names. In the same way, they're half German now, but their surname is not. The implication is that at the very least, their father was not a foreigner (unless for some reason they go by their mother's maiden name...)
It's a tiny detail, but one that I like being kept intact.
I've just never heard Gavin as a surname before, and I try to look it up on the "what does your last name mean" databases and get nothing, it only gives it as a first name.
But who knows, if theres a Rickey Bobby, there could very well be a Gavin surname floating around out there, all I know that its definately not common.
