Anyone see this flick? Robert Downey Jr & Jude Law are amazing in their respective roles of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson!

I am, for some reason, hyped for this movie. Maybe it's because it opens a day after my birthday. Or maybe it's my mancrush on Robert Downey Jr.

... I... shouldn't have said that last bit.

Anyway, as Dragonclaw said, I want to know what makes it good. That is, reviews from non-paid, er, reviewers.

Both Jude Law and Robert Downey Jr. are absolutely amazing in their roles. Downey, particularly, really captured the essence of a sort of mad genius, rather than the wishy-washy deerstalker and tartan coat Holmes a lot of us know. The plot's pretty good, with decent twists, although it's a bit long, clocking in at around two hours. Still, you should definitely go and see this movie if you have time.

i liked it. the main thing disappointed me is i couldn't figure out any of the mysteries. isn't that the best part of the mystery is trying to solve them? also the sherlock's love interest could have been better portrayed and i think it's a fault of both actress and writers tbh

I really liked the movie. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law worked very well together and it stayed as far away from other depictions of Sherlock Holmes

Did you ever read a Sherlock Holmes book?

According to all of this (including mikkimikka's post), this movie IS amazing, and I have to see it.

I have, and that movie is nothing like them. They have turned Sherlock Holmes into an action hero, and I find it disgusting! If anyone here has ever read a Sherlock Holmes book, DO NOT SEE THIS FILM, IT IS FULL OF CONTRADICTIONS TO THE BOOKS! I am a huge fan of the books and did originally have high hopes for this film, but after viewing it, I think they have disgraced the Sherlock Holmes fans of the world. This movie should not bear the name Sherlock Holmes, as it is nothing like any of Authur Conan Dolye's works! I apologize to fans of this movie, but it is rubbish and nothing like the books. I wouldn't go see it again.

I actually asked mikkimika that because he/she said that the movie had an "un-solvable mystery", which always appears in Holmes tales.
But now that you say that, and having read 2 Holmes books (Study in Scarlet and The Hound of the Baskervilles, and a small book of separate tales which I don't remember a lot about) I couldn't care less, really. I mean, it was stated in Study in Scarlet that Holmes was experienced in boxing and swordplay (if I'm not mistaken, this was part of Watson's summary of Holmes' characteristics). So the side of Holmes that the movie shows probably is the side of Holmes that we don't get to read about, but exists. And I'm pretty sure I'll like it. After all, how can anybody not like whatever Robert Downey Jr. lends his face to?
And hey, nobody whined when Layton suddenly became a swordmaster in Diabolical Box!

I kind of figure that much after watching the tv stuff and seeing the commercials for the movie. The naked thing doesn't seem right and probably a few other things. I'm kind of eh with the whole thing mostly do to the fact that I'm more of the who dun it stuff. I like reading those in Woman's World(whenever my mom get them or I'm in line at the grocery store) except most of the time it bs like why did the detective thought this person did it or how did s/he do it or something other then a murder one. I want to figure out who did it not how the cops figure it out.

My friend is now (re?)reading this giant anthology of Sherlock Holmes (although not a complete one) and that said (in retrospect) although it's nothing like the books, almost every other line in the movie is from the original writings or a reference to it. So it's not like they made a mystery movie and slapped on the names Holmes and Watson without any regard to their original stories.

From what I've heard, this new film is actually a lot closer to the books than the older films. The old adaptions turned Holmes into a posh guy with a love for deerstalker hats, and Watson into some old fat stupid guy, and the new film has been more accurate with no sign of a deerstalker hat, Holmes as an unhygienic genius who until recently lived on the streets and is indeed a semi-professional fighter.
Although I've only read some of the short stories and seen some old film of the Hound of the Baskervilles, I really like how the film has adapted the books.

I recommend it.

Yeah, in the books, (I have the whole set all the way up to His Last Bow) it says that he knows how to kick-box and some other forms of martial arts. Also, there are stories that are based before Waston even arrived on the scene. And in some pictures, mostly the films or artist representations, he is wearing that hat thingy.

Hmm I dunno the film's so-so for me.

For one thing....

Spoiler: Of the film
Watson's gotta be fireproof to survive that explosion. It was also never explained how the woman survived that epic fall easily.

Also I felt there was too big a gap between creating mysteries and solving them. I think there should've been a little more things revealed on the way rather than the big speil at the end. Got a little dull in the middle me an me friend were dozing off. I've also heard several accounts from other people reporting the same.

I liked the film but there were a few choices the director made that I wasn't crazy about; like how they backed up to show certain scenes as flashbacks rather than when they occured, and gratuitous slow-motion in one part in particular. But over all (and as someone who has never read a Holmes book!) I enjoyed it.

And...holy shit, fanservice. "Watson has a girlfriend and that makes Holmes sad!" sounds like half the yaoi I've ever read. Made it so easy all interest in the pairing was killed for me and it let me enjoy the movie without a thought to fandom. Kind of a plus, lol.

I initially had high hopes (since Guy Ritchie is a decent director and Robert Downey Jr. a good choice for the character), but the trailer had to ruin everything. It looked like a Michael Bay movie, with an explosion every two seconds.

I'll still see it eventually (experience tells me you should never trust trailers)... apparently it's actually good.

I've only read a few of the original books, but I have to say that I found the movie to be interesting and although some of it was quite Suspension-Of-Disbelief-y (The slowed-down fighting scenes, especially - even I know that you can't defeat someone like that unless you can actually slow down time) it was cool, with a nice loose thread left behind for a potential sequel. I think some might be annoyed how they brought Irene Adler back in such a major role, but IMO she kept a nice line between genius, action girl and damsel in distress and was pretty in-touch with what I'd gotten from the books. Jude Law as Watson was the biggest change to me, but hell, I enjoyed it. How can you not enjoy something with Jude Law? Plus it means Watson now has personality, rather than just being Holmes's translator into simple english.

Ping' wrote:

That it is not. It has more action than the typical Sherlock Holmes story (but then again, making a movie about Holmes muttering to himself and solving the mystery in 10 minutes on some obscure detail would hardly capture the typical audience) but there's plenty of pretty logical deduction and a not-too-unbelievable plot in general.

This never affects me. I'm watching this movie even when the trailers make it look like "EXTREME Sherlock Holmes: Now 70% more EXPLOSIONS!"

@MidnightJasper: You're convincing me even more of watching it, y'know? Sounds like just 30% more explosions, instead of 70.

I'm a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories.

Honestly, thought the movie was decent at best. The best adaption of Sherlock Holmes is still the Granada Television Series starring Jeremy Brett. Its really the best rendition of Holmes you can get.

This movie was entertaining at least. At least the best part of the film was recognized when Robert Downey, Jr. won the Golden Globe. What a pleasant surprise! I particularly liked all of the Holmes/Watson subtext. No wonder there's a kink meme for it already. XD

Sure.....apart from the fact Holmes gets very sad when Watson gets a girlfriend. Almost breaks up the relationship and they live together.

Not really. If you don't want to see Holmes/Watson in it then you don't have to (well, at least not during the movie - retrospectively it's a bit "Wait, what did I just watch?"). Irene gets her fair share of the stage too.

Then again, I may just be really bad at noticing romantic implications.

For some reason I didn't notice it that much...The whole dinner scene I interpreted as "Holmes being a characteristically analytical bastard", not "Holmes being jealous over Watson's girlfriend". And it's not like there's a scene of Holmes angsting about it or whatever. He is too cool for angst XD

Seriously, Holmes spends half the movie trying to break them up so he and Watson can continue to be BFF.

Did anyone else think the ending was kind of rushed and poorly edited?

Spoiler:
Tossing in the reference to Pr. M was nice setup material, but then it's like "There goes the dog okay movie's over roll credits!" My sister and I looked at each other like "Bwuh?" Felt like they ran out of film or something.

Oh yeah... I think the first half of the movie kinda fell outta my head or something =P
And I agree about the ending, and also
Spoiler:
what you said about Irene: it kinda felt like they just brought her back into the final scene for the sake of that reference. I found it quite funny how there was this rather underplayed moment of her falling off and then a glance later and she was just lying on this platform nearby, it gave me a sense of "Of course she can't be injured! She hasn't finished her lines!" I did like how the mysteries were explained, although all of the "science" muddled up my brain somewhat, and I also liked how Blackwood didn't seem to just be I TAKEZ OVER TEH WORLD NAO like most villains nowadays.

I love that you just went ahead and called her "Generic Love Interest." I think both the female leads in the movie were about as uncompelling as they come. I didn't go into it thinking "lol yaoi ship movie," but I definitely left feeling that way. This is in no way a bad thing.

I read The Complete Sherlock Holmes at a very young age. Can you imagine Pearl Fey holding a book that weighs more than her head? Good. Now imagine her male, with glasses, and even younger. That was me.

So, lots of childhood memories there. If they got this wrong, I would be very angry; I'm not.

My impression of the movie? Very silly, and very good. Watson was absolutely wonderful - he's smart, brave, tough, sick of Holmes's self-centered nonsense, and still the truest friend the detective could hope for. He's not a bumbler, he's not a joke, and he can take care of himself. He is a war hero and a skilled doctor, which is one step below being a ninja who is a doctor. Most adaptations don't reflect this.

Holmes is... not quite canonical, but not as big of a stretch as some of the critics claim. Jeremy Brett is a better Holmes, and Robert Stephens is funnier, but RDJ is the Holmes who can bend a steel poker with his bare hands. I think he's too bohemian - the canonical Holmes is a lot more discreet - but discretion and class don't make for cool action sequences.

Irene Adler was a wasted opportunity; wooden, wooden, wooden. But, unexpectedly, Watson's wife Mary Morstan is a bright spot in the movie, and completely steals her scenes. Why doesn't Holmes know or recognize her? Presumably for the same reason that a 'Professor' who is a criminal mastermind doesn't ring any bells for him - this is not the Canon.

I definitely recommend this movie. Aside from one ridiculous scene that seemed to be a straight attempt to cash in on the Dark Knight frenzy - you'll know it when you see it - it's great fun.
