Here's my counter part to Croik's Front page post.

About a year ago, Croik and I decided it'd be a cool idea to do a B-Movie banner, amongst other things. It started with Gourdy as a monster villain, but... well. Goudy has no art. So Goudy became GODZILLA. ... Literally. I was using a toy Godzilla to plan the new banner. And Croik... well... lets say in the first draft the monster was more like a neck growing out of a city building.

Then we combined the schools of thought and came up with GOURDZILLA.... Some how. I'm still not sure how we pulled it off in the end.

But anyways. I got thinking that... well. We always do crazy things at CR. And I felt we hadn't done anything CRAZY in a while. So I thought, eh, why not just redesign the forum from scratch. That's one of those thoughts I should've strangled the first time I heard it. But no. I was dumb and gullible and decided to do it anyways.

Now, I decided to use as much CSS3 as I could reasonably use, and bring the graphics down to a minimal. This allowed me to do some very snazzy effects that would normally make a page very hard to load.

First, you see the index? That crazy font? That's a real font loaded from the theme. No graphic tricks or nothing.

I also experimented with CSS sprites. If you get a chance, try viewing the image that makes up the reply button, or the quote button. Spoiler: IT'S TALL

CSS gradients were another thing I played with. You see the board index button? No images. That was done entirely with CSS gradients, drop shadows, and rounded corners. And actually, the board background is a gradient itself. No matter how wide or narrow you make your window, the gradient will adapt and end perfectly with the starting and ending colors. I also used them on the top nav bar.

There were also some stylistic touches I decided to do, well, because I can. The index is like a real notebook, complete with Binder rings, index tabs, and a hand written font. Quick reply got the legendary stylus, and golly that was hard to track down a good image of. And the full reply, got a cool clipboard clip.

There were also some little things that I'm really proud of. Since the launch of the forums on InvisionFree, I had always wanted to make the posts look like something convincing out of the games. I have to admit that until now, I always felt I failed. I just couldn't get it right whenever I'd make the attempt. Now it combines the best of the court-record with the coolness that is the dialog box. And, you know.. the post time, apart from it being stylishly done with a CSS gradient that changes color based upon if it was read or not, can actually be clicked as a short cut to that post. Seemed much more intuitive then the tiny doc icon of yore.

And I worked and worked and worked.... took me so long to get done. Then last week, in one of our chat conversations we thought we should tease you guys with a coming soon place holder. It was a dumb idea. I mean, I had made a theme AND a banner for you guys. Who's dumb idea was it to do a Coming soon place holder on to... oh yeah. I SUGGESTED IT. Bad Wooster. Stop making ideas that make you work harder. So... I thought I'd cheat and recycle the old Coming Soon Banner from just before the Musical banner.

Then....

Well, I like it. It runs a little slow for me, but I have yet to upgrade to Firefox 3.6, so I'll have to do that and see how things go.

Just want to say, you really out did yourself on this one and I really appreciate all the hard work you've put into these forums over the years. It's really nice to see all that hard work pay off and I think this layout turned out magnificently. Even if I never say enough, I always appreciate the hard work you put into this place to make it work and I hope we will continue to see great things to come from you Wooster.

It IS amazing, it just.... gave me a headache. Nothing a few zoom outs can't solve.

I love the stylus on the quick reply pmsl

It's a bit slow for me though so I've gone back to the kenji theme .__.

I like it.

So far the new style is bit confusing, but I've seen it only for five minutes.
I'll get used to it.

Though...I have one thing...
When you press the quick ereply and the pointing hand comes out...
It's the...finger...You do ralize what it looks like! :D

But really amazing.

I was not expecting a banner change (much less change at all) after completing my two-page-thrown-together English paper but this is epic.

I have to admit, I was a little irked by the change at first--everything looks HUGE--but it grew on me in a few hours' time. xD GOOD JOB WOOSTER. I especially like how the avatars are displayed now, and the clipboard look the reply page has; makes me a little more eager to write something.

...I also feel stupid for not getting the Gourdy references right off the bat.

Waouh... I have to admit, I never imagined your 'surprise' would be... this. Come on, it's really impressive. As dullahan1 said, you really outdid yourself this time. I sort of enjoy how everything is quite bigger now, it's much clearer, much nicer, much everything :)
The new banner is really cool; though I have to admit too, I didn't even think of Gourdy at all when I first saw the monster... *shame on me*

So, really impressive work you did. Though I believe there are still a few things left that seems a little odd to me, but it's only a matter of time until it grows on me!
And yay, no problem loading the page, yipeee! :)

Ok.... wow.

You've clearly worked very hard on this and it shows.

I think the stuff at the bottom of the page; users online, birthdays and stats is waaaay too big. So is the Page numbering.
I miss not having gaps between the different forums. One big clump of beige make navigating a little tricky. Is it no possible to separate them?

I also have a pet hate about forums with the Poster Details on the right hand side. My brain craves order and organisation, so I prefered the ordered box on the LHS to the floaty bubble on the RHS.

I like the overall design though. Much more fun.

I love it! The magatamas, the stylus, the gradient Reply, etc. buttons... ^__^b
My only problem is with the smilies...they look ugly when you try to choose them against a white background (think Gant's beard and Godot's hair disappearing into oblivion), and the View More Smilies is working terribly for me, I can't use any non-default ones...

ahaha, I didn't see this in a while because most of my recent browsing has been on my ipod. But it's a really well made theme! And it's really different! I don't think I've seen a really big change in... my entire stay here! I love how Gourdy looks like a real movie characater, I can really see a movie with him appearing! Well done guys!

Thanks for the compliments!

As for your concerns, at least those that I can address. There's a very logical reason why the Profiles are on the right. If your profiles are on the left, then when you have posts that are longer then your profile block, it'll unceremoniously wrap around it. If it's on the right then it's not distracting when the post is longer since our natural read method of left-to-right doesn't get interrupted. I honestly also considered putting the profile blocks on top of the posts, and avoid the left-right reading problem all together, but that just became wasted space.

As for page numbering, there's another logical reason why it's so big. The page numbering block is the same height as the Reply, New Topic etc block. My mind got cranky seeing the two blocks two different sizes so I made them the same size, and then adjusted the font so the space didn't look oddly wasted.

On the first draft, I did consider separating the forums so we could use the forum collapse feature, but all my attempts clashed uglily with the notebook motif I was aiming for.

While this doesn't do anything to solve your concerns, I hope it'll show that I actually did consider them at the drawing board stage.

You'd die laughing if you saw the original picture with the forum Gourdy that Croik gave me. It was in a wide open field with grass and rainbows and little Goudies and mama and papa Gourdy. Honestly, I'm surprised I pulled off the menacing vibe I did, given what I had.

Wow, I love you Wooster!

I absolutely adore the new theme. The little magatamas in between each post are so cool, and the board index looks much better than before. And I prefer the profiles being on the side they're on at the moment, it makes the posts easier to read. Only thing I don't like is the way the links turn yellow after you click on them, but like I said somewhere else, I'll get used to that.

And you fixed the smileys!!!! This is one of the best days ever, seriously. :gant-clap2:

I was actually thinking youse were doing something like this, when you were first telling us to update to Firefox and that. =P

I just came to this forum yesterday, so the sudden format change came as a big surprise to me. I really like how it all looks. ^_^

The only grievance I have with this setup is that usernames are black in a near-black box, so I have a lot of trouble reading names on posts.

I have already gushed about this theme elsewhere and chastised n00bs with fail monitors already, so I'll get to the parts I don't like about the theme that need fixing up.

1) In post boxes, the poster's username is too difficult to read assuming your monitor's gamma level is correctly optimised. Switch the username colour to white or light grey. #cccccc should do the job!
2) In the forum listings, the nifty ring binding images produce a great effect that gets ruined when they overlap some of the thread icons. You should slightly increase the icon margin to make all the post icons visible again.
3) In the Users Online list, the yellow used to mark a standard user and the yellow used to mark a moderator are too similar - use a different colour for standard users. May I suggest #cccccc? :P

...That's it.

If all I can do is nitpick, that speaks volumes. Nice job. :D

Oh, and once again, for those of you who see giant text on the site: it's partly because Wooster decided to use 14pt font. It's also because your monitor's resolution is god-awfully bad.

A UK example: this is pretty much the cheapest monitor you can get. You will notice that even this basic option is widescreen and has a native HD resolution. It's cheaper, lighter and performs better than your current old-skool monitor. BUY ONE.

You'll thank me later. Yummy HD and widescreen are yummy.

For Wooster's reference, this is the monitor I'm using to browse the site.

At least I can finally see Wooster's avatar now, that's always been bugging me.

Other than that, I think I'll be keeping this theme on for a very long time. If not just because big text like this makes long posts easier for me to read.

Bullshit.

1280x800 on a 15in Laptop screen is plenty resolution for anything.

Well, I'm on a 17.3inch screen laptop, with a 1600x900 resolution, and the new theme simply kicks asses for me. And no ultra-big letters :hotti:
And I know I've already said that, but I really love this new theme... everything is bigger and clearer.
What I especially like is the Profile box being on the right, instead of the left. It saves space, and it's nice... I've always disliked the large blank space in a post, just because of the profile box on the left...

And oh, I've just noticed the 'alternate' colours for the posts! Really neat! :jake:

It looks really good, but seeing as I don't have a widescreen HD monitor (Mine is flat panel I think) everything looks huge. Hopefully I'll be able to get a new computer with a HD montior and it shouldn't look as strange :)

Hey Boss, I appreciate you trying to help, but can you tone down the "Buy a Monitor" and "Play with the font size" speeches? I'd rather they love it or hate it based upon how it's presented by default. Not saying "Your Monitor is outdated: Please Upgrade to Windows 98"

And for reference for everyone else, my monitor is 1440 x 900; It's not particularly outstanding as far as LCDs go. And I rarely if ever have my browser set to full screen.

Noted but I still don't regret posting it because up until today I'd forgotten how to adjust the font size and it's quite a useful trick to know. :D

I seem to recall though that there's a feature that adjusts the font size without zooming all the images in or out but I've forgotten how to use that or even if it was retired when I wasn't looking. Viewing webpages with perfectly fine images but with Squint-O-Vision text gets annoying very quickly. :/
