Europe has had a very interesting back story regarding this week's release of Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. On Capcom's Community Board, when asked What the fans wanted, a frequent requests exclusive to our European friends were...
A: Get Trials and Tribulations finally released (Europe received Apollo Justice long before GS3)
B: Tighter release window with their American counterparts.
Capcom did indeed deliver on all of those... but not without unseen consequences.
According to Croik, who talked with a Capcom Rep, Europe didn't receive Trials and Tribulations in its traditional 3 month wait because "T&T got pushed back in Europe not necessarily because its release would conflict with other, larger games, but because they simply failed to localize it in time for the date they'd set. When that happens, they can't just keep working and release when it's done, they gotta jockey things around. So I'm not sure if there might have been a game in particular that butted up against T&T, just that it took longer than expected."
Anyways, it would take over a year after the American release of Trials and Tribulations before the PAL region finally got its copy. Sales were very disappointing for an accumulation of many reasons.

With the advent of the internet, what's buzzing in America, is the topic of European websites, and the reverse is also true. With America having it's title at least a year in advance, a lot of Europe's excitement when the release finally hit had died. It just wasn't as exciting getting a game that was last year's news, regardless if they never got it in the first place. - Importing
With the incredibly long wait, and Europe's famously multilingual populous, a lot of fans decided to import either the Japanese version with both Japanese and English, or the American version with a more polished English translation for the region free Nintendo DS. While this made a ton of sense for fans who weren't sure their game was even going to be release in their home nation. It had the back firing side effect that people who bought the game in America, wouldn't turn around and also buy the title in Europe. Thus what might've been European sales figures turned into American sales figures.
What does Capcom see in response? Europe doesn't like Ace Attorney like America does. Yes, they obviously know that European imports are a factor in American sales, Sven said as much. However, there's nothing that tells them that those same Europeans won't just import the next title too.
Yes, some fans do turn around and purchase both the import and their native version, and we salute you a thousand times, but they're in the minority.
To make an example of myself, my copy of Justice for All is the Japanese version. I never did buy an American copy. In consequence, my purchase shows up in Japanese sales figures and doesn't help the states. - Piracy
This is the big one, and the subject of today's article. 300 retail copies is a dismal amount. I hardly believe the profit could cover the costs marketing and production, never mind a quality localization. With everyone playing the game on their flash carts and emulators the hard working people at Capcom don't get any credit for their hard work bring the game to you and doing a quality job translating it.
Pirates, thanks for your years of cheating your way into a quality product so all of Europe gets to suffer for the current release.
With all those factors in place at once, Trials and Tribulation's sales were beyond bad in Europe. Capcom saw those numbers and somewhat justifiably decided that if the series were to remain profitable in Europe then they can't bother to waste time and money translating if all of Europe is just going to play the game in English anyways. With the additional localizations out of the way, Capcom was able to fulfill Europe's other popular request for the series and bring the release window with America down from what was generally months, to mere days.
In short, Capcom did what the Ace Attorney Fan market was doing anyways. Before Europe was importing from the States. Capcom's now making that stage simpler and bring your the import themselves.
So please Europe. Buy AAI locally. Show Capcom that you all genuinely love the series, and that TnT's bad sales were due to poor release timing.

I've imported all my Ace Attorney games from the USA, and i'll be doing the same thing with AAI..
i'm not going to miss this because of those stupid R4 owners..

This is also not particularly important as importing games within the EU is pretty trivial to do so anyone who wants a legitimate copy of the game won't have to try too hard to get it anyway. This is especially relevant when you consider how many people will be playing the game in English across the EU. (I'm aware of the lack of European language translations for AAI but a very large portion of players would have played the game in English either way.)

But in the end: I've got a US and JP version of GS1, the US version of GS2, the UK version of GS3 and the Benelux version of GS4 (dutch / french booklet and cover). So I've pre-ordered my copy from play.com, and it probably wont arrive within the next week :(.

Too bad they are only going to ship 300 copies.. and they've got 276 stores in the Benelux according to the site.. assuming the larger stores will get multiple copies it really will be a hit or miss if you will actually find one.

It's Capcom's own fault. Most of the people in Europe speak English, and the translation of the games is much better from Japanese to English, so of course the Europeans will buy it in the USA when they have to wait one year until it's released in their own country.

Europe has always been pushed behind on release schedules, now with the current online international market (and such features as paypal,etc) it becomes incredibly easy to make oversea sales.
It's only logical a part of potential buyers won't tolerate being left behind once again.

I feel sorry for you people in Benelux. This is a cycle, because even if people bought all the games without importing, then the space would return, and people would import. Thus, things are cancelled in some countries and in others the space becomes smaller. Then it starts again.

Although it wasn't as bad when I was going to buy a Gamecube version of Sonic Riders, and the UK "GameStation" shop just sold the F***ing PS2 / Xbox version. What kind of marketing is that? I guess they weren't expecting any Gamecube users, which I proved them wrong!
I'm only getting the UK version of AAI because of the week gap between the US / EU release. Plus I don't really save any money getting the US version, plus I would have to wait 2 weeks compared to 5 days. I just hope "GAME" have copies tomorrow.

But definitely a yes on your points on the lack of advertising. No TV adverts, magazine adverts, nothing. Capcom need to step up their game on the advertising if they want to sell more.
Oh well, I'll be walking to the shopping centre to buy AAI tomorrow morning. Can't wait.

I never imported any of the games, mainly because of the cost of shipping it over. That and I was a little bit naive about the whole importing thing anyway. But hopefully Capcom's right in thinking that it's not that popular in Europe; more copies in-store for me! (I shall be wearing my Miles Edgeworth "iObject" t-shirt, too.)

Sure enough, use of flashcards is ridiculously widespread amongst Dutch DS players. Heck, I have seen toy/game store employees encourage purchase of a flashcard. Go figure.
And somehow, I am not very surprised that Intertoys managed to get some copies anyway. While awful for games in general. they sometimes have weird things there, acquired via non-usual ways, it seems. (Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh! games, wut?)

I'm here to say that I played all the games before they got released here (please, don't make me explain how, I know I am a bad kid...
). As you can see, I'm very fluent with English, so I couldn't wait to the localization to make its way to here. But I can say, and very proudly, that I possess all the games, and that tomorrow (when the AAI hit the stores at last) I will buy my retail of the game. It's a bad blow for all of the Spanish gamers that love this series, because all the previous games were translated (with more or less accuracy), but I can assure you that, at least a copy will be taken from the shelf and find a good and loving home.OK, resuming, what I want to say is that the language in this game is very important (all of us know that at least), and of course is gonna hurt the sales, but I'm going to put my part. I just pray that they don't do this with the next game...

But if people don't buy it, they won't release it AT ALL... Like they're not releasing this one in Benelux. They need to see it sells well, and then they'll go "wow, if it sells that well in English, a translated version would sell even better. Maybe we can invest in translation for the next game and it won't be wasted money".
