Although it was quite awkward having Austin's arm reach across her, Zoey took it nonetheless, grateful for the comfort. "He..." Sighing through her nose, something made a firm decision in her. She was going to be completely, utterly honest with Austin. Otherwise, this relationship wouldn't work, however fake the game world was. "He made me love him. And...through that, he had complete control over me." She kept her eyes on the backs of the humans, away from Austin, waiting for him to ask another question.

"Made you love him?" Austin asked. "As in...he imprinted with you?" Austin felt terrible for prying, but how could he help her if he didn't know what was going on? "W-what did you do...under his control?" Too many questions now. Shut up and let her answer.

Zoey shook her head. "No, not an imprint. He just...charmed me." The description almost seemed inadequate to describe how hard Zoey had fallen for Cairus. "He told me to...he trained me to be like him. In every way. Including his distaste for the existance of humans in this game." She swallowed. "One day, he...he took me to the town of Frey. And to an NPC school."

Austin nodded. He could tell "charmed" probably didn't come close to describing it...whatever it was. The existence of humans in this game...as in the virtual humans or as in the people trapped in the game, whatever they chose to be? He decided it was better to leave that be for the moment. It would probably become clear soon enough what was meant if he allowed her to keep going with her story.
"Then what happened?" Austin asked.

Somewhen, Zoey had started breathing through her mouth, not quite panting, but clearly showing some agitation. "He told me...he said the best way to stop a disease was for it to never have started in the first place." Cairus' face appeared in her mind's eye, expression creased in a concerned explanation. "That the imperfection of the human race should be stamped out as soon as possible." She swallowed, squeezing her eyes shut and clinging to Austin's hand. "...He told me to kill them all. All of the children." Her eyes flew back open, brimming with angry, humiliated tears. "And I did it." Her voice cracked. "....I did it, Austin."

"...People do crazy things when they're in love. Even when they choose not to be the human race," Austin said, casually reaching over with the arm that was around Zoey's shoulder to wipe the tears away. "You did it, but you regret it..." Austin smiled sadly. "So, what happened after you killed all the children in the NPC school?"

Still keeping her eyes forwards, away from Austin, Zoey replied. "I could have refused. I should not have..." She let out a shuddering breath, thanking herself for not making eye contact with Austin. It was so much easier to tell this story as if just recalling a memory, rather than looking at the person she loved. That would make things much too realistic. "After I...did it, he looked so pleased. I had never seen him so happy, in all the time I had been with him. Cairus..." As the beautiful expression he had held drifted into her mind, Zoey lowered her head slightly. "I wanted to see him like that more often. So...I went out to the rest of Frey. And...I similarly slaughtered the rest of the population. For Cairus." Her fists clenched at her sides, voice shaking. "...Which is probably why you have never heard of Frey."

Austin's face twitched slightly. She wiped out an entire town just to impress Cairus? She was remorseful, but was that enough for her to be forgiven for doing such a thing? As Zoey clenched her fists, Austin reached out and grabbed one of them. He kept his face a mask as he asked, "What happened next?" He had to get it all out into the open, regardless of how he felt about it. When Zoey talked, it made Austin wonder about himself. Would he destroy an entire town just to make Zoey happy? Part of him, his human side, said "yes," but the wolf in him said, "no."
The only way to know for sure is if it would make her happy, which it wouldn't. Zoey's not like that anymore.
Oh, isn't she? How do you know she wouldn't kill you to make Cairus smile?
Better me than her. Don't forget you almost killed her just because it was your natural instinct.

Zoey almost didn't feel Austin grab her balled fist. In fact, she could barely even feel him slumped over her shoulders - the waves of repressed memories were washing through her mind as if floodgates had been opened. "After that, we went to one of the empty hotels to sleep." She paused at the slight ambiguity of the sentence before continuing. "As he slept, I realised just what I had done. So I ran." Compared to the rest of her explaining, this was blunt and without detail. Because that part of the story was in fact the most complicated issue, and Zoey had suddenly felt a strong compulsion to keep that from Austin. If only for a while.

Austin looked at Zoey sympathetically. He'd run, too, if he was in the same situation.
Not that you'd ever be in a situation like that, the wolf inside Austin told him.
"And did you...get away?" he asked.

Zoey nodded slowly, clutching at Austin almost desperately. "Yes. But...I think he let me." An echo of a familiar laugh reverbrated in her mind as she relived that panicked run, remembering that if Cairus had wanted to catch her, he would have done.

((Sorry I haven't been posting. College, projects, busy, etc. You know how it gets. Also, hm, it seems as if Insho really isn't coming back to continue his part of the story, so I have two situation suggestions we could go with:
1) We make it to the back gate of Tepple. Finding nobody there, we decide to get some REAL food, stay the night in an inn in Tepple and leave in the morning for our next adventure. - OR -
2) We have been going the wrong way, and discover that we're lost and have to camp for the night, hoping we can move towards that city Mika was talking about when we wake up the next day.
Let me know which way you guys would rather take this. For now, I'll get a transition going.))

The brothers had been walking for what seemed like hours through the apparently-endless forest. They had been half-listening to Zoey and Austin's talk, not wanting to be eavesdroppers, but not being able to help it.
"Man, I hope we're going the right way," Jay said softly as he sidestepped a low branch.
"Yeah, all that running and fighting could have easily disoriented us," Jeremy agreed. The brothers didn't know if Tepple could be in sight at any minute or if the group had really become lost. Jay was hesitant to pull out his menu PDA and check.

((Option 2 sounds good to me as well.))

Austin frowned in concentration. She got away, but only because he wanted her to? Why did he let her do it? And why didn't he find her again sooner?
"Hm..." he said, then he smiled timidly. "At least you're here now." Rather than still with him. "Um...So...Is there anything else you wish to tell me?"

"...No." Zoey shook her head after a short pause, adjusting her grip on Austin. What shed already told him was emotional enough - delving into other issues was hardly going to help her tearful state. Clearing her throat, she looked around, frowning. "..Shouldn't we have arrived back by now?"

((Option 2 selected. Damn I wish more people were here to move the story, but the barrier for entry does seem kind of high, I guess.))

"Yeah, we should've," Jay commented, turning around. Stopping, he pulled out his menu PDA. "Can everyone hold up for a second?" he asked as he clicked the "map" button. "Dammit..." he muttered as he saw nothing but forest around him. He manipulated the map, searching for Tepple, and eventually found it. It was pretty far off in the other direction.
"It seems we have been walking the wrong way," Jeremy remarked dejectedly, looking over Jay's shoulder.
"I guess Cody will have to embark solo on his quest... Shame," Jay said. "So, anyone got any ideas?" he asked nervously. 'Man, how could we mess up this badly? I thought we had a good sense of direction,' Jay thought angrily.
'Well, we did get quite disoriented and we probably didn't think to pick out landmarks. How can you in this forest?' Jeremy wondered in response.

Zoey sighed through her nose, adjusting Austin's weight for the umpteenth time. "Great. And nobody thinks to check a map while we're walking?" Her sadness over the discussion with Austin had settled and changed so that she was no longer upset, but in a foul mood. It was definitely better than crying all over the place, in her opinion. "As for ideas...how about that town that Mika mentioned." She looked around at the seemingly unending forest. "I am sure it will be better than camping out in a forest."

Austin noticed Zoey's hesitation before she said "No." So, there was more to the story...
Don't press her. She'll tell you when she's ready.
But what if it's important?
If it is, she'd tell you, wouldn't she?
He looked Zoey in the eye and realized she had been crying.
What kind of jerk are you? Wanting her to recall more painful memories... Austin reached around Zoey, awkwardly trying to hug her.
"I'm sorry..." Then, he heard the brothers saying they had been heading the wrong direction the whole time. Austin felt a growl rise in the back of his throat, but he held it back and laughed, not because anything was funny, but because he felt he needed to laugh his anger off.
"Hahaha...My bad." He then looked at Zoey again. "Don't be angry at them. None of this was their fault."
"Good idea," he said, then turned back to the brothers. "How far away is that town?"

((I'm horrible with town names. If anyone has a good idea for a modern-ish city (more modern than Tepple, but not like, futuristic or complete concrete jungle) please feel free to name the town. Look over Jay's shoulder at the PDA map or something.))

"Hmmm," Jay hummed as he searched the map with his finger. "The nearest town other than Tepple appears to be about... I'd estimate two or three kilometers--that's around one and a half miles--to the northeast."
"I guess since we haven't been there, the town has no name; it just shows up as '???' on the map," Jeremy admitted. The interesting thing about this map is it almost had a sort of birds-eye view, so it showed the trees, and the town seemed to look a bit modern from what little detail they could make out.
"It would be quite a walk, but it's a shorter distance than Tepple and hey, it's a new town," Jay explained.

Zoey chose to ignore Austin's telepathic words telling her to keep from being angry at the brothers. Well, it wasn't her fault. She'd been trained to hate them, so it was easier to take her anger out on them. At least, that was her nonsensical logic.

Hearing mention of a town nearby, Zoey shuffled forwards with Austin to peer at the PDA. Recognising the structure of the town, she nodded, remembering her visit. "Angmere," she stated.

"You know where we're heading, Zoey? Great! Let's get going," Austin said. "We're burning moonlight! Or is that the expression?" He smiled and added, "You know, I've been moving my arms with little difficulty. Maybe I can move my legs, too, and walk." He lifted his arm off Zoey's shoulder, took a step forward, stumbled, and felt a fresh amount of pain coursing through him. "Hm...Then again, maybe not."

Zoey nodded, grabbing hold of Austin again. "It is quite a big town, but be prepared to pay a LOT for board." She shuffled ahead faster with Austin to cath up with the humans, holding her breath. "Does everyone have money?"

"Yeah, I've got about... hold on..." Mika replied as he searched his suit pockets. "About... 1,800 credits. Of course, I don't know how much things cost here, so yeah. This could either be a lot or I could be dead poor. I don't know." he added, half-jokingly.

"Thanks, Zoey. Haha, I guess I was slightly off the mark there..." Austin said. Then, Zoey asked about money, and Mika searched through his suit pockets., finding 1,800 credits. Austin smiled serenely. "Hey, now. It's my fault we got lost in the first place. I'll pay for everything, and I won't take 'no' for an answer."

"1800 'credits', huh?" Jay repeated, "I wonder if one of those is equivalent to a gold coin. There seem to be a lot of currencies in this game."
"Yeah, I guess it depends on the user, like everything else seems to do here," Jeremy postulated, pointing to the PDA that Jay was still holding, which served as the brothers' personal menu. When they heard Zoey and Austin arguing about who should pay for board, Jay chuckled a little bit. Not in a making-fun sort of way, but more that he enjoyed witnessing such generosity. 'This world would be a much better place if there were more people like those two living within it,' Jay thought.
'I agree. Also, I keep forgetting that there are younger people playing this game, and it makes me wish we could remember ours,' Jeremy replied in-thought.
"Listen," Jay suddenly said, looking toward Austin and Zoey, "We sort of got all of us into this mess by assuming we were going the right way. The least we can do is contribute to the pot." Jay brought up the inventory screen on his PDA and noticed the two of them had about 2,200 gold coins. "Even if our share isn't quite equal to either of yours."
"Yes, but perhaps we should talk about it on the way," Jeremy suggested. Jay switched over to the map, and the brothers were now ready to leave whenever the rest of the group would be.

((If I remember correctly, we determined that the currency works like this:
1 tiny piece of gold = 1 GP, 1 gold coin = 100 GP (the coin being a bit bigger than a US quarter), 1 nugget of gold = 1000 GP (a "nugget" being a chunk of gold that would not quite be concealed if you closed your fist around it), and 1 gold bar = 10000 GP (a gold bar being, what else, a bar of gold that you would almost need both hands to carry because of its weight)
I know that's more planned-out than it needs to be, but it's something to work with, I think.))

Zoey raised her head slightly. "I have an account in the bank in Angmere," she said. "I will contribute as much as I am ethically allowed." She narrowed her eyes at Austin slightly, a smile lifting her lips slightly, despite herself. Turning back to look in front of her, she saw the outline of a city on the horizon. Looking around, she sniffed in surprise, not having noticed leaving the forest.

((We are in the forest outside Angmere. As for how large the in-game universe is, well...I'd imagine it's huge.))

Austin beamed. "Whoever said anything about our shares having to be equal? What you don't pay in coins, you pay with keeping the group together." That sounded much smarter in my head. Then, he noticed Angmere on the horizon. "Wow. The city's already in sight." He glanced at Zoey as she sniffed. Then, he took a huge whiff as well. "Hm...All I smell is a lovely vampire." Her scent is slightly overpowering. He winked at Zoey.

Zoey gave a small smile at Austin's constant upbeat attitude. "Well, I am trying not to smell anyone." She indicated the humans in front of them with a wry smile. "I do not think they would appreciate me going all bloodthirsty on them." There was a dry, dark sort of humour in what she'd said, but there wasn't really any chance of her being as upbeat as Austin was.

Austin cringed slightly as he remembered the times he's seen Zoey going blood-thirsty, but instantly recovered and put his huge smile back on.
"You can drink my blood any day of the week," he said sappily. "Why drink from then when you have me?" He stuck his tongue out. "If you want to not smell them, that can be easily arranged. I think I still have my torn up, sweaty, rotten onion carrying shirt somewhere. Just give me the word." He winked at Zoey again.

((This inactivity, it saddens me :acro:))

Ah, Angmere. The brothers could see it in front of them now, and they could see the light of the sun beginning to illuminate the horizon. It hung behind the cityscape like it was an aura of salvation. Jay and Jeremy kept walking briskly, looking behind them occasionally to see if the two lovebirds good friends were still there. Just then, Jeremy's foot caught a protruding rock and he began to fall forward. He caught himself with his hands and used the momentum to spring his legs forward and stand back up.
"Haha, perhaps you should be more careful with your footing," Jay joked, looking to make sure Jeremy was alright.
"Oh it's nothing. Life has its rocks and we trip over them sometimes, but you just gotta spring yourself back up and move on," Jeremy mused. The brothers' and the rest of the groups' adventures had indeed been rocky at times, but they were all still there, alive and well, and the brothers hoped that'd last as long as time was willing, and any future joiners would see the same fortune.
