Speaking of which...I know this pairing has been addressed on this/other threads before, but I'm still curious and still don't really get it. What exactly makes all of you PhoenixMaya fans like it? I get that they're really close and have a lot of trust and etc., but what makes you take the leap to a romantic relationship? Some pairings that I don't like I at least understand why others do, but this one I just...don't get, especially considering it's large popularity :/

Me? I'm not quite sure, to be honest, whether there's a relationship between them. The first game implied absolutely nothing as for their feelings for eachother, but the second, I believe, very faintly gave the impression of the two (or at least Maya) having feelings for eachother, beyond friendship that is. Yes, Pearl is a child getting carried away, but it seems like the perfect plot device to imply and foreshadow what they actually feel for eachother.
That's the way I view it. Feel free to correct/flame me.

Well, Phoenix and Maya both denied what Pearl said, especially Phoenix, and if I've spoiled myself correctly in GS3 Maya says something about Pearl just being worried that Phoenix will leave because of the men in her life.....? I might be WAY off here because...It was a while ago and I don't actually remember >>; So somebody please correct me.
Anyway, I guess I can see how somebody would latch onto Pearl as a plot device for the pairing, though as you say she is just a sheltered child getting carried away.

Edit: Basically, it's a melancholy, serious kind of love. They've both been through a lot and they've been through similar things, so they can sympathise with each other and try to help each other grow past them. They also have similar beliefs, personalities, temperaments, jobs, and positions, and are both equally busy, so it's easy for me to see them in a healthy relationship. Maybe it's their similarities that make me like it, since I'm almost never one for "opposites attract." You can also interpret their lines to mean that they care about each other. I love the dynamic between them and I think they complement each other's characters well.

I'll have to go fish up that essay of yours. I've never really been a huge fan of the Opposites Attract thing, mainly because I could see the less-tolerant one of the two getting annoyed pretty quickly with the other one and their differing personality, lifestyle, etc. and start ripping out their hair, assuming they have any. But that was just from personal experiences and observations.

/ because they both have been to hell and back enough times to have a Platinum Membership for Frequent Flier Miles, but I guess that the only thing I have trouble with this that they are both so depressed and solemn. Not as much for Lana now, but I can still imagine that there would still be some emotional scarring. Edgeworth......I love him to death but I swear he is the Poster Child for Emo sometimes. As discussed somewhere in another thread (I think it was at least)--he never truly smiles, just some arrogant smirks or the smile of perpetual Emo-liciousness. However, after a very long search the only place I see him actually smiling is in the pic after 1-4... and that was possibly forced since people usually try to smile for cameras.Crap I lost my train of thought... uh, as I said above, I'll go look at your essay ^_^

Well, Edgeworth smiling in the pic in 1-4 wouldn't have been forced because he wasn't looking at the camera xD; Although he was still sort of smirky there, but I think that even though his smiles aren't really "ZOMG I'M CHEERY" smiles, in context there ARE moments when I believe he really IS smiling sincerely just based on what he's saying. Also, the pic at the end of 3-5 was another sincere smile.
But I really don't think that he's 100% emo and arrogant. Sure, he is a LOT of the time and his sprites pretty much all are, but there are still moments in the game.
But yeah, you're right that EdgeworthxLana is a solemn pairing. Like I said, it's not very cheery with the exception of Lana's smiling sprite which she is still serious while using, so I can see why people would be turned off. But I still love it. The angst and the seriousness is what appeals to me (odd as that sounds considering my next favorite pairing is LarryxMaya o.0), partly because their angsting and serious moments are very similar. I can really see them relating and working through their issues together. It's a "you're not alone" sort of pairing, the way I see it.

I don't like the pairing myself. I think GS3 especially makes it very difficult to assert that the writers ever intended for anything romantic between them. I might have said this in an earlier thread, but Phoenix interacts with a lot of women through the game (and gets a Pearl-slap for it!). It's made pretty clear that when Phoenix is around a girl he's attracted to, he becomes something of a goober (and not just in 3-1). Not only does he never act that way around Maya, but Maya never reacts to it, either. One of the most common indications of "friends who are starting to see each other as more than friends" in any romance is one party getting jealous over the other. There were plenty of oppertunities for that in 3 but it just didn't happen.
Which of course doesn't mean you can't ship them afterwards. And I can see how people like it: they're very close to each other, very good friends. They have the "cynical guy / energetic, outgoing girl" dynamic that's very popular in a lot of anime couples. There's no need to prove they care about each other because it's obvious that they do. After playing GS2 I kind of expected it to become canon in GS3, because it seemed like an obvious direction for the writers to take.
Maybe it's the fact that it could have been so easy, and they didn't do it, that turns me off to the pairing the most. Maya could have been jealous over Mareka addressing Phoenix so casually, but they chose to have Pearl do it instead. Phoenix could have easily turned to Maya at the end of the game and realized that he's let the past go, and this is the girl he wants to be with, but they chose to make it about family. It's one thing for writers to have no say on a pairing, but to open the door for one and then shut it themselves is another all together.
In short, if Maya's life being in danger several times didn't make Phoenix start to think that he might love her, it'll take something extra dramatic to do it. Like, the development of Mia-sized bazoogas.

Oh dear. That's a thought that'll keep me up at night.
But all in all, that post makes a lot of sense. It's awfully hard for me to support something like that when I have yet to play Gyakuten Saiban 3, and if what you're saying is true(Which I know it is), then I'm a bit surprised that opportunity wasn't seized.

Hmm, in the interest of fairness, I do think the writers threw P/M fans a bone in GS3. Maya had a rather interesting response to Phoenix's reaction when he first met Ayame that was never really explained. It was subtle, but I definitely noticed it. Also: Chi-chan totally ships P/M.
But then again, 3-5 was very kind in regards to couples in general, with all the interaction the entire cast had with one another.

Anyway, I'm not exactly sure what it is that draws me to P/M. I guess it was a combination of events 1-2, 2-2, and 2-4 that led me to believe that something was going to happen sometime or another. Although, I've yet to play GS3 so I can't offer my opinion on that. I suppose it could also be a combination of Pearl's actions, their trust, and their overall relationship. They became friends very quickly, spend a lot of time together, are always supportive of each other. Come to think of it, another thing that led me to believe something was going to happen was the end of 1-4, at the train station. I'm too lazy to go into detail about my reasons but if any of you remember what was said at the train station, I'm sure you can understand why I think it suggests that something may happen. Well, I'm starting to loose my train of thought so I guess I'll just end it here. By the way, I'm having trouble seeing the connection people make between

Anyway...I still don't see what any of that has to do with romance. Yes, a romantic relationship involves trust and friendship and closeness, but trust and friendship and closeness don't have to involve a romantic relationship. I'm especially skeptical of it in there case given that their constant arguing, while healthy in the friendship they have, I just can't see as making for a healthy romance. And Phoenix never acted anyway around or thought anything about Maya that gave me the impression he was in love with her. They have a special and adorable friendship, but I just don't see why it has to turn into romance considering their personalities and the way they interact. I don't think romance improves their relationship at all, I think with them it would ruin what they already have.
As for E/M, that isn't really my territory but I believe a nice rant about it was posted on either the first page of this or the favorite pairings thread.

I don't know...if my best friend felt worthless and was about to leave, I would have been pretty desperate to make them feel better before I lost contact with them :/ And if I had been her and had been about to leave my best friend, but he chased after me and assured me I wasn't worthless, I would have cried too. I still don't see why any of it points to romance. Especially since they're always thinking negatively of each other--her thinking he's boring and old, and him thinking she's young and silly. Yes, this is fine in their friendship, and they are close and it's adorable and aww, but I just can't see it working in romance, especially since it makes the pairing seem sort of emotionally...pedophilic, so it squicks me out :/ I mean, he's always calling her a kid and she's always calling him an old fart. I just can't see how it would be healthy unless something CHANGED, and over the course of three games neither of them changes their outlook on the other personality or their own personality, so I don't see either of them adapting to the other in a romantic relationship either :/
On another note...Whoop, another EdgeworthxLana fan :D

For me, case 1-4 hinted at a minor crush on Larry's part.
-For one thing, Larry's first reaction to Maya was, "Whoa! Cute!"
-Then, if you show him your attorney's badge, he mentions that he can't pay you, but you can have all the Samurai Dogs you want. Phoenix warns him of the dangers of letting Maya eat, but Larry tells him, "whatever makes her happy, y'know?"
-Whenever Phoenix and Maya meet up with Larry, Larry always addresses Maya, completely ignoring Phoenix, his best friend since elementary school.

1) They actually know each other, spent time together.
2) Without Nick's help, she would be dead and she would never have smiled.
3) Honestly, a good couple. But good lookin' (Wait they are video game characters, right?...)

Good points, but point no. 1 seems a little lax. Most of the characters have spent time together and know each other, so then anyone could say they were paired up because they know each other....
That's all I have to say against your point :)

You could use the same logic for 2) to support AdrianxNick/Edgey; she probably would've gotten the death sentence if not for them and they made her smile in the end, too. And that's never gonna happen because Adrian is oh-so-gay X3
3)'s a matter of taste, I guess. MiaxLana FTW on this.
Still, each to their own. And it's a fresh, original pairing if anything.
