Woah, this competitive stuff goes way over my head. I checked out the Smogon place and there are a ton of strategies I'd never even think of using. It's too pro for me @_@

Hey, I have 9 Mons in my team right now, but I'd like to narrow it down to six. Any advice?

- Quilava
- Growlithe (Amaterasu)
- Gyarados (Scylla)
- Espeon
- Jirachi
- Scyther (Ajax)
- Pidgeotto (Phoenix) <--yep.
- Ampharos (Inazuma)
- Larvitar (Jade)

I want to add Dratini when I get it, maybe replace the Pidgeotto...

This is the most fun way to play, for me. The competitive scene is interesting, but too full of RAAAAGE and elitism for my liking. We should have a battle sometime, with our non-strategical Pokes (though I have attempted to make some of mine use INTENSE strategy).

Oh, trust me, you just took the words right out of my mouth. Occasionally I'll watch some battle videos in the Global Terminal and I can't say I'm encouraged to go pick a fight when I see a ton of videos of Level 100 Magikarp slaughtering a team of Mewtwo. I've never actually battled before, and I'm no wuss but I don't really want to have to put up with all the super elitists. It's cool for the people who are able to analyze the game so thoroughly and I bet it's intense, but I don't like being called a nub just because that sort of thing isn't my scene.

But I'll have to take you up on your offer sometime, thanks! It sounds like we could have some fun without completely crushing each other's spirits. XD

Well, here is my opinion:

Quilava
Larvitar (final evo is awesome)
Scyther (Get it to be Scizor)
Dratini (if you really want it)
Jirachi
Pidgeotto

You dont need 2 of the same type in your team. However, use the spares as a secondary team, that you keep 10 levels behind.

Ok, uhm . . .NO
First of all is Scyther much better (for the normal play trough)
then you say Dratini if he wants but then you say Larvitar?
Ampharos is much better, and I would replace Jirachi by Espeon (no legendary 'cause they are cheap)

Like I said, my opinion. Might not be a good one, but... :p

Really depends what you think, however I do now agree with CP in the fact that legendaries are cheap. Espeon over Jirachi then.

ahhh Pokemon HG has sucked 160+ hours of my life (all in the last month no less) X.x I beat the game like 10 days after I got it ^^;; and now I'm just training and breeding and stuff.

I want to build a Eeveelution team for kicks. I'm going to have Umbreon, Espeon, Flareon, Leafeon, Vaporeon, and Jolteon. I need to decide on move sets for them. I think I'm good with Umbreon, but I'd like some suggestions for others.

Jolteon:
moveset 1 (Thunderbolt, Magnet Rise, Shadow Ball, Thunderwave)
moveset 2 (Thunder, Rain dance, Magnet Rise, Shadow Ball)

I can't decide whether to get rid of Thunder+Rain dance or not. I love Thunder, but it's only 70% Accuracy, so have to use it with Rain dance. But the problem with that is Jolteon can't really take a hit, so is it worth it to use a turn for Rain dance and then hit with Thunder? Or just stick with Thunderbolt?

Vaporeon:
Surf, Aurora beam, Rain dance, Quick attack (?)

I don't know if I need Rain dance (esp if Jolteon has it). I could replace Quick attack with Hydro Pump, but Surf is usually good enough, and more reliable. Maybe I should get Hail + Blizzard combination (replace rain dance and aurora beam)? Or just stick with Aurora beam (or Ice beam)

Flareon:
Flamethrower, Fire Fang, Bite, Dig (?)

Okay, I have no idea what to stick on Flareon other than Flamethrower. Maybe it needs agility since Flareon is pretty slow...

WHY THE HELL FLAREON?
it is the worst evee evolution EVA
it has friggin' high attack yet it has as good as no good physical attack moves
also Glaceon is much better imo
My suggestion for your team:

Jolteon:
Moveset One
Thunder and Rain dance take too much time
Instead of Magnet Rise may Double Team a good idea

Vaporeon:
~Aqua Ring
~Surf/Muddy Water
~Toxic
~Protect

Leafeon:

~Sword Dance/Curse
~Leaf Blade
~Last Resort
~you may let that blank since you have then one attack less so you can use Last Resort faster
otherwise I'd teach it toxic as well

Umbreon:

Assurance
Curse
Yawn
Moon Light
If you want I may expain you how to teach Curse and Yawn, or I may give you an Evee with both of these attacks, so you can breed them

Glaceon:

~Hail
~Yawn
~Blizzard
~Protect

Espeon:
~Psychic
~Calm Mind
~Shadow Ball
~Something you can surprise your enemy with if it has low power like Hyper Beam?

I will help you with all the Evolutions if you want so.
Since there are double TM attacks or Breeding moves that take a while

Ooh, I taught my Espeon Shadow Ball, because I'd picked up that Espy was a good SA 'sweeper' and the only special move it had at the time was Confusion. When does it learn Calm Mind?? ;^; This I need.
Also, there's no way to get Glaceon and Leafeon in HGSS - you need to level up around one of those rocks in Sinnoh. That's why Flareon.

Argh, most strong Fire moves seem to be Special...is there any way to teach Flareon Flare Blitz?

Calm mind only via TM
If you have Wifi I may give you the TM or a good Espeon
and Flamara can't learn Flare Blitz, that's why it sucks epicly

I know this sounds stupid, But I would love to have a well-trained Masquerain. I realise it's kind of weak, but can anyone come up with a good moveset?

Also, I have a shiny Gardevoir. I was catching Ralts in the swarm, when a shiny appeared. I was all like, 'OMFG MUST GET'.
It's level 60 now, however Not a great moveset

Yeah Flareon kinda fails as a fire Pokemon, it's slow, and doesn't have many good moves. It sucks that it can't learn Fire Blitz, but it doesn't have that much HP to take the recoil. Its Sp Attack isn't too horrible, and I can EV-train / get good nature that can raise it a bit so that Flamethrower doesn't suck. But I want a fire Pokemon on the team.

I'm leaving out Glaceon is 'cause Vaporeon can learn ice moves to cover that. But I do have a spare Glaceon that I could use.

What about giving Leafeon Sunny Day? Since its ability prevents status ailments in sunny weather?

An Eevee TEAM? I'd have some/all of them Baton Pass for strategy...

If you're BREEDING it opens up the options significantly.

VAPOREON: Should learn Acid Armour. Useful to Baton Pass this. Yawn also an option. Keep Surf. Ice Beam > Aurora Beam if you keep it. See Jolteon.
UMBREON: Wish > Moonlight. Heal Bell is an option, Yawn, Substitute, Rest, etc
Curse-Assurance works great. Charm also useful.
ESPEON: Reflect > Hyper Beam probably, cutting ATT in HALF means a lot more of your team may take a hit which is more useful in long run than suicide turn. Maybe hold that Light Clay so it goes for 10 turns not 5.
JOLTEON: Rain Dance->Thunder is probably too risky, no it can't take a hit. You'd have to only switch it in when something is already PAR'd or confused or whatever, and that's a pain. Much better to have Twave-Tbolt. You could have Vaporeon set up Rain Dance and Baton Pass, keep Vaporeon slow so it Baton Passes after the enemy to get Jolt in without a hit. But what if you want to take advantage of Jolteon's Speed AFTER it runs out? Murphy's Law is it'll miss. Twave is a great move, only drawback is it can't have BURN at same time.
FLAREON: Uh, Will-O-Wisp, definitely. Maybe Curse. It's not very good, as far as I can tell... Baton Pass?
LEAFEON: Leech Seed. Set it up for Umbreon or Vaporeon...

I'm currently harvesting BP from the Battle Frontier. I have around 350 BP and I'm aiming to max it out before I spend any. Gotta love the Battle Factory with it's huge gamut of pre-trained Pokemon and not having to raise your own.

Sup once again, fools.

I need an awesome nickname for the following Pokemon:
Regirock
Regice
Registeel
Jirachi

Preferably, I'd like the names to be clever/witty, or a reference to culture of some sort. However, I'm not going to name Jirachi "Darth Vader" or something just because it's a pop culture reference. The name has to suit the Pokemon, whether ironically or genuinely.

Alrighty, I now have 16 badges. Who thinks I can totally kick Red's much superior ass with these generic Pokemon?

Fraligatr Lv. 62
-Crunch
-Aqua Tail
-Surf
-Ice Fang

Arcanine Lv. 56
-Heat Wave
-Flamethrower
-Crunch
-Flare Blitz

Pidgeot Lv. 54
-Roost
-Feather Dance
-Wing Attack
-Quick Attack

Snorlax Lv. 51 (lol barely trained)
-Block
-Rollout
-Crunch
-Giga Impact

Ho-oh Lv. 54
-Extrasensory
-Punishment
-Fire Blast
-Sacred Fire

Should I just trade in some Pokemon from Platinum?

'Starfy' or 'Invincible' for Jirachi is all I've got.

And yeah Oni, I can't say your chances against Red are too good with what you have. The biggest problems fighting Red are the constant Hail, the fact that three of his pokes have Blizzard, and his damn Light Ball Pikachu. I'd highly recommend getting a Tyranitar if you can since it can deal with all of Red's advantages: it has a good chance of surviving a hit from Pika, can easily OHK it with Earthquake, and its constant Sandstorm cuts Blizzard's power and drops its accuracy to something like 50%.

Regirock=Rockstar (lol idk)
Regice= Name it after a popular Ice lolly
Registeel= Aliminium
Jirachi= Post-it (For the post-it notes n its head)

@ OniXera
I would level them up a slight bit more (but you probably planned that), and agree with Franzise that you should totally get a strong ground type. Tyranitar preferibly. The easiest way to get one is to get a level 42 Larvitar in the safari zone, then minimal levelling up is required.

Alright, nicknaming Pokémon is a sincere hobby of mine. Let me see if I can give you a few ideas.
Regirock:
  • Genbu - If you're a Yu Yu Hakusho fan, this one will make sense. Genbu is a rock demon and one of the Four Saint Beasts of Maze Castle. Genbu has the ability to break apart and reform at will or absorb/melt into other rocks. The Platinum Pokédex entry for Regirock is: "Its entire body is made of rock. If any part chips off in battle, it attaches rocks to repair itself." So, this name makes some sense to me!
  • Olympus - Hey, mountain of the gods, why not?
  • Vesuvius - Okay, so this one's a volcano... but Regirock does have the move "explosion" at one point, which is close enough to "eruption" for me. Alright, so maybe "Vesuvius" would be better suited to a Camerupt, haha! But it's still here.
  • Babel - As in the mythical Tower of Babel. So, as the story goes, man used to be united and speak on single language and decided to build a tower to reach the heavens in honor of their greatness and unity. God, displeased with their intent, destroyed the tower, confused their languages and scattered them across the Earth. Regirock is said to be composed of rock from several locations, so I thought it would be a nice tie in name to this sort of legend, with unity and scattering involved.
Regice:
  • Tunguska - After the Tunguska event, in which most people believe a large ice meteor impacted the Earth's surface in Russia in 1908.
  • Fjord - Wikipedia gives its definition as "a long, narrow inlet with steep sides, created in a valley carved by glacial activity." Hey, it's at least somewhat ice related.
  • Jokull - This is a Scandinavian name meaning "glacier of ice". For some reason, ice and colder country's names just fit for this guy!
Registeel:
  • HAL - "I'm sorry, Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that." Yeah, for some reason, I just see Registeel as a big robot. So, have some "2001: A Space Odyssey".
  • Cylon - I can't get away from the robot thing! And tell me he doesn't at least bear some slight resemblance to the Cylons of "Battlestar Galactica".
  • Tungsten - This is an element that typically appears as a steel-gray metal. I named my Arron after this element back when I was taking Chemistry. Thanks, Chemistry! :keiko:
Jirachi:
  • Tanabata - Okay, this one's a no-brainer. It's a common tradition at Tanabata (a star festival!) to write wishes on a piece of paper and then hang them on bamboo branches. I'm pretty sure that is what the creators had in mind when this little guy was created. It's been a while since I've watched the anime, but I'm pretty sure the gang does something like this. Unless my memory's just completely off! :yogi:
  • Kahskhiori - From the Vulcan word "kahs'khiori" which means "shooting star". I think it's cute! Especially if you're a Star Trek fan.
  • Vesper - This name is Latin for "evening star". I used it for my Alakazam, personally, but since Jirachi is actually star shaped, I think it fits here as well.

I'll try to come up with some others, if you'd like.

Nickname Jirachi "Joker" b/c it has the smile scarred into its skin, just like The Joker :3 It also fits well if you're running a Trick Jirachi ;)

I like Fjord for Regice. But then I could make the other two Freya and Freyr (or maybe Frigg, but prolly not). Then I would prolly just go change Fjord to Skadi or something, but whatever.

(it gives you an excuse to nickname another one of your pokes Fenrir :3)

Oh wow. You're definitely the winner. I love the way you think up nicknames. You're probably the only person who's answered my request (I've posted it on several other forums) and provided satisfactory results.

I love the reasoning behind Olympus, Jokull, and Cylon, though I'm not exactly keen on them. Except Cylon. I think that suits really well, even though I'm not a Battlestar fan. I was considering naming Registeel PTX-40A after the mech from Lost Planet, though, since I'm a Lost Planet fan.

Perhaps, instead of Olympus, another famous mountain...? I'm not a huge fan of the whole "named after gods" deal. Not Everest, though, because I think that's a bit too commonplace.

As for Jokull, actually, now that I consider it, it's not half bad. I wouldn't mind some other suggestions though, since it's highly likely you've got some of the most brilliant nicknames online.

I was thinking, actually, of naming Jirachi Ringo. Anyone who knows music would get this reference. What do you all think?

Edit@Franzise: I've actually named my Staryu Stafy already.

No more Wi-Fi events?

Okay, NoA, it's seriously time to quit being lame and give us Celebi/Mew/other hard-to-get legendaries and the other walker routes.

The only event I ever went to was the game event for Shaymin.

I've been catching lots of random pokemon on soul silver because I want to tranfer my pokemon from platinum to soul silver!

Guys, I just beat Red, I feel so badass.
What's next?
I heard you can get Hoenn starters. I don't know what to chose for the Kanto starters.

Yeah, pretty much all you can do is get the starters, and Kyogre or Groudon depending on which version you have.

Well you know what annoyed me slightly-I wasn't really thinking whilst talking to Steven and chose the Red stone, gaining a torchic, which is AWESOME, but not exactly needed seeing as I have a blaziken ANYWAY...
For the Kanto starter I chose Squirtle, because I love squirtle. My friend chose Mudkip and Bulbasaur, so we bred/traded them.

And get Rauquaza, But I think you must have Groudon and Kyogre to do that...I'm also on my way to getting a shiny Pichu for SPIKEY WITH VOLT TACKLE.
