Over a two week hiatus. Sorry, guys! Chapter thirty-eight.

Spoiler: Chapter 38: New Days Bring New Beginnings
"Give me a reason why I shouldn't."

"It's dangerous! What's it going to solve?!"

"You!"

Mia was pacing back and forth in her pajamas rather quickly in her bedroom, running her hand through her hair. She couldn't believe the idea Diego was proposing to her. She stopped dead in her tracks at Diego's last response. Her eyes were locked into his.

"What do you mean me?!"

"You know very well what I mean! You're broken, Mia! This can only put the pieces back together!"

Mia darted her eyes down to a corner of the room in order to avoid locking herself in Diego's frigid gaze. She bit her lip. A tear was begging to roll out of her eye. She knew the truth. He was right. Mia did feel broken. It was as if her world was falling apart before her, all thanks to Dahlia Hawthorne. She wished they'd never met. Diego walked up to her so they were only centimeters apart. He placed a hand on her arm.

"Look... I didn't mean to shout at you. I'm sorry... but, this is what needs to happen..."

"We don't even have enough evidence for this, Diego..."

"We have to meet with Dahlia as soon as we have it all together."

"... I wish we didn't..."

The two of them heard a breath just outside of Mia's door. They had a pretty good guess of who it was. Their suspicions were confirmed when Mia opened the door and revealed a sobbing Maya. Mia's facial expression turned into a soft and understanding one.

"What's the matter, Maya?"

"A-A-Are you and D-Diego gonna keep f-fighting?"

Mia kneeled down to Maya's level with Diego standing right behind her. She hugged Maya tight and stroked her hair. Maya returned the favor.

"Shh... no... no, we aren't, Maya... it'll be okay..."

Diego gave a small, soft smile. It was remarkable to him how well the sisters got along. He could understand, though. Mia was more than just a sister to Maya. She was a sister, a mother, a best friend, a teacher, and a role model wrapped up into one package.

* * *

The morning light broke through Mia's window. Diego slowly lifted up his eyelids. He yawned as quietly as he could in case Mia was still asleep. He soon discovered she was. He loved watching Mia sleep. She looked so peaceful with her eyes closed not too tightly and her mouth slightly agape. However, her back was turned towards him, so he decided to start spooning her. Seconds later, her eyes opened, and she smiled. She turned her head slightly to see his face. His chin rested on her shoulder. Mia placed a hand on his cheek to lightly push his head down, bringing his lips to hers. After about ten seconds, they broke. Diego locked his hands in with Mia's like a puzzle. His chin now rested lightly on the side of Mia's neck.

"Good morning, Kitten."

"Good morning..."

"It's a new day..."

"Yes, it is..."

"New days bring new beginnings."

After a while, they woke up Maya and made breakfast. Diego made coffee, of course. Maya rooted through Mia's bookshelf once again and came across a large book.

"Hey, Sis, what's this?"

"Oh! That's a photo album!"

"What's in it?"

"Well, I don't really remember... let's take a look!"

The three of them sat on the futon and flipped through the pages.

"Hey, Sis, I took this picture!"

Mia's face turned bright red. It seemed that Maya took a picture of Mia kissing Jeff.

"A-Ah, yes... you certainly did..."

Diego threw his head back and laughed.

"He's certainly not more attractive than me!"

"No, he isn't! Right, Mia?!"

"No, certainly not!"

"Certainly not what? I'm NOT more attractive?"

Mia blocked out Maya at this point, becoming too flustered with Diego and his ways teasing of her.

"N-No, that's not what I meant!"

"Then, what did you mean?"

"I meant you are more attractive!"

"Objection! I call your bluff! Ha...! If you claim that you think I'm more attractive, prove it!"

Mia quickly did so by fitting her lips into Diego's like a puzzle. The force of impact pushed Diego back slightly. She ran her hand through Diego's hair, making the kiss very heated and passionate. She finally broke away at the sound of giggling in the background. Her breathing became heavy.

"S-Satisfied?"

"Very much so, Kitten."

"Hey, Sis, we should take a picture of you and Diego kissing!"

"W-Why?!"

"Because I have pictures with you and your other boyfriends kissing!"

Gee, thanks, Maya...

Diego chuckled.

"Looks like you should start a romantic time capsule."

"... Maybe I should..."

This had to be broken up into two chapters. Chapter thirty-nine.

Spoiler: Chapter 39: Embarrassment
"I think your sister had a great idea earlier."

"What?"

"About the pictures."

"You mean you want her to take a picture of us kissing?"

"It wouldn't hurt. Oh, come on. She's thirteen. Do you really want to crush her dreams?"

Maya walked in with the photo album at the time. She heard the last line.

"Yeah, Mia! Do you wanna crush my dreams?"

Mia gasped and turned her head to Maya's direction. She waved her hand, signaling Maya to sit on the bed next to her. She wrapped an arm around Maya. Diego rested his hand on Mia's thigh. Mia took a breath before answering.

"No...I'm just..."

"What? Embarrassed?"

"No, not embarrassed. More of... shy..."

"You were less shy with Paul..."

"Paul was two relationships ago. He was just a different person..."

"More attractive, Kitten?"

"No where close to you, Diego!" Maya chimed in. She flipped through the photo album to the picture of Mia and Paul kissing.

"See, Diego? His hair isn't even spikey at all!"

Maya's face turned red after she said that comment. Mia laughed. Apparently, Maya didn't mean to give the comment. It just slipped out. She just revealed to Diego what type of guy interests her.

"Ha...! Well, he isn't more attractive than me."

"Mia would openly make out with him. I saw them many, many times. Pretty intense, too."

"Really now..."

Mia's head was bent down low. NOW she was embarrassed, and Diego could tell. Her face turned extremely red.

"D-Diego, he was just the type of guy that had you do that..."

"Kitten..."

"His personality was the type where he just kind of got you to do that... to make out with him in a very hot, intense, passionate way... he was a major womanizer."

"I see..."

Diego placed his thumb and index finger on her chin to turn her face up to his. His voice was no louder than a murmur.

"Mia... you don't have to be embarrassed..."

He pressed his lips against hers. After a few seconds, Mia suddenly didn't care that Maya was sitting there. She understood his point. She loved Diego and wasn't as afraid to show it. Suddenly, Mia heard a click and a flash. She broke away and looked in front of her. Maya was holding a camera, grinning.

"Got it!"

"M-Maya!!!"

"Hehe!"

Maya ran away with the camera.

"I'm sorry about that."

"Oh, don't worry about it, Kitten. Like I said, it's actually a good idea. Looking at photos could bring back memories."

"You're right."

"Actually... maybe we could make more memories."

"And I thought Paul was bold!"

"What happened with him anyway? I heard it ended... well... rather badly."

"... It did..."

"If you don't mind..."

"I caught him cheating. Several times. He was with many other girls. Then... one night... h-he came into my dorm through the window while I was undressing and getting into my pajamas... and before you say anything, the blinds WERE closed!"

Diego chuckled.

"Well, I assumed they were. Continue."

"So, I explained to him the relationship was over... well, AFTER he tried to make out and... yeah. He used everything against me... said I'm a m-motherless wench... s-said I didn't deserve him... said I was w-worthless..."

"Mia..."

"T-Then, I started to think m-maybe he was right..."

"Honestly... I think he was right about one thing. You didn't deserve him. You deserved more. Mia, you're the most amazing, wonderful, intelligent, beautiful woman I've ever met. You're as far from worthless as a person could get. Don't listen to people if they ever say things like that. They don't know what they're missing."

Mia smiled.

"Thanks Diego."

"I'm here for you, Kitten."

* * *

"Doug, what are you making?"

At Ivy University, a busy Doug Swallow was examining a test tube. A professor walked in to find him.

"I didn't make this. I found it."

"Where?"

"Never mind about that. But, take a look at this. It seems this stuff could pack a punch."

"Well, what is it?!"

"I dunno... I've got to give it a thorough examination."

"Alright, well, shut the lights when you're done."

"Okay, Professor Chemley."

The professor walked out. Doug couldn't tell the professor where he got it. He was confused about why he found it where he did.

"I can't... not until I asked her why... I have to ask Dahlia why she has such a poison."

He flipped through all of the books. There was only one book where he found the same qualities. The book was called "Mystic Poisons: Rare Mixtures of Medium Valley".

"'Opitrioxide'?"

Paul is a f*****g dick!!!! Diego adorable :) And awesome, as usual. Funny and romantically cute :pearl: But I think a plot twist is needed in the next few chapters to bring it back into a sort of story mode rather than thousands of episodes of someones life. I think you write brilliantly and the ideas are great it just needs a little something that make people go 'OMG that was the last thing i expected' and i think you could manage that over and over again, just with largeevents that could cause the smallest of chances in your story :)

Chapter forty! Sorry for the shortness.

Spoiler: Chapter 40: Darren's Research
"Dahlia, where did you get this, and why do you have it?"

"Oh... we're going to have THAT conversation, are we, Dougy?"

Dahlia and Doug Swallow were at Doug's apartment. They were sitting on his couch. Doug showed her a picture of the test tube of opitrioxide.

"Yes we are."

"Where did you find it?"

"In your apartment. I found it when I went to your bedroom. It fell off the dresser when I accidently bumped into it."

"Oh, you're such a clutz, Dougy."

"Never mind that. I'd like to know about it."

Dahlia sighed.

"I visited my father's office and found it there. I wanted to know what it was. That's it."

"That's it? Your father is in the jewelry business."

"Let's not get into that..."

Doug was still suspicious of Dahlia's behavior, but he decided not to push it.

"O-Okay then..."

* * *

There was a knock on Mia's office door.

"Come in!"

Darren walked into the office. Maya jumped up from the floor as if she were a pop tart.

"DARREN!!!!"

"Hey, Maya! I haven't seen much of you lately! How are you?"

"I'm pretty good! How are you?"

"I'm okay."

"What is it, Darren?" Mia asked.

"Well, I took the liberty of doing research. I'm sure you'll be very interested."

"Research on what?"

"Remember when I was shot?"

Mia's heart sank. She looked down and twiddled her thumbs in her lap. Her voice was only audible enough for Darren to barely make out what she was saying.

"How could I forget?"

Darren walked to the other side of Mia's desk to put a hand on her shoulder.

"I figured it all out..."

Mia suddenly looked up at Darren's face.

"What do you mean?"

"A while back, you told me about this creep named Rodney Ardor, right?"

"Right. The one who threatened to kill me in a desperation for love."

"The robber's name was Rob Ardor... Rodney's brother..."

"What?!"

"And here's the kicker. Dahlia Hawthorne hired him for the job... to steal a special poison..."

Mia couldn't say anything. She didn't know what to say. Darren continued.

"Here. Take this."

Darren threw a file onto Mia's desk.

"What is it?"

"All the research I collected. Good luck, Mia."

despite the shortness i think this is a brilliant, much needed chapter, giving away the exact right amounts of information.It was exactly the sortof thing that i thought the story needed yesterday !!!!!!!!!!!!!! XD

Chapter forty-one.

Spoiler: Chapter 41: Connections to the Past
Mia and Maya went back to Mia's apartment. Maya was as chipper as ever. Mia was delirious. She couldn't believe the contents of the file Darren gave her. She sat on the futon, looking through the file again. Most of the folder was filled with articles Darren collected. There were also some background check documents in there as well as a couple of zip-lock bags of evidence. Mia called Diego.

"What is it, Kitten?"

"I think you should come over right away."

"What's wrong?"

"We've got it."

Diego understood and made his way over to Mia's apartment right away. They sat on the futon. Fortunately for them, Maya was busy playing solitaire with Steel Samurai cards. How such a game worked with Steel Samurai cards was a mystery to Mia and Diego, but at the moment, they didn't care.

"The pieces are falling into place, Diego."

Mia took the bag with the Q-tip Diego gave her ages ago out of a drawer.

"That's the poison sample, right?"

"It may have been stupid on the part of the police to let her get away with the bottle, but I love whoever decided to swab it before she got it."

"What are you thinking?"

"Compare this to the test tube of opitrioxide that I found at the manor."

"Nicely done, Kitten. What else?"

"Remember how we needed to dust for prints?"

"Of course."

"Well, I called Lana a couple of days ago, and she told me her little sister started taking an interest in forensic science. She is planning to give her a fingerprinting kit for her birthday. She told us we could use it."

"Brilliant... but, how will we know who the prints belong to?"

"Lana has access to fingerprints."

Diego smiled.

"But, how does this tie into the shooting case last year?"

"In this article, it says a rare and special poison was stolen from the company. If we could somehow ask the owner of the company..."

"... We'll know the poison."

"Right. But, her motive..."

"Can I see the file?"

"Certainly."

Diego looked through the contents, deep in thought. Finally, a chuckle escaped him. Mia looked confused. Diego held up one of the zip-lock bags with a smug grin on his face.

"This jewel..."

"The bag is labeled 'GK-9'."

"The case my father was wrongly convicted in. It appears Dahlia had the same motive as her father. She wanted to keep people from talking."

"But, they were already dead by that time."

"Not all of them."

"What?"

"Why, Terry Fawles, of course!"

"He was in prison!"

"And she knew his sentence would be carried out soon enough. She gave him that necklace, right? Well, think about it. I researched opitrioxide. It's potency only remains for one year. She knew Terry. She knew he would attempt to see her sister after all."

"... So, she replaced the poison just in case..."

"Bingo."

'Redd White asked an anonymous person for information. He states that he was taken aback by a painting of a man in a straw hat and knew he could trust that person for information'.

Okaaaay...? What does that have to do with trusting people? Wait a minute... man in a straw hat... No... it can't be...

Hey, sorry, guys. I always get busy at the most random times. Here's chapter forty-two.

Spoiler: Chapter 42: Sisters
“Whatcha doing, Dougy?”

Dahlia visited Doug Swallow’s lab.

“I’m creating a new product of sorts.”

“May I know what it is?”

“Erm… I’d prefer to keep this secret.”

“Aww, come on. Pretty please?”

He regretted his next action. He looked into Dahlia’s eyes, which always persuaded him to do her bidding when she wore the puppy dog look.

“Okay, fine. You know that… erm… ‘liquid’ you had?”

“Yeah?”

“Well, I’m making a ‘sister poison’.”

“How fascinating! What’s it called?”

“Mmm… I’m not sure yet. I’m thinking ‘Dahlioxide’.”

“Aww, you’re naming one of your creations after me! How sweet!”

“Yeah…”

Little did Dahlia know he only named it after her because he found the poison through her. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her slip a sample.

“Wh-What the…?”

“Oops, I gotta go, Dougy! “

“B-but…!”

“I’ll see you later!”

Mia and Maya spent their last day together without Diego. Mia wanted to do something with just Maya, sister to sister. So, they spent the day at the beach. Mia decided to tease Maya a bit. It seemed fair since Maya always teased Mia.

“How about that guy, Maya? What do you think?”

“Hmm… I give him an eight out of ten.”

She suddenly gasped.

“What is it?!”

“It’s that one guy from our usual burger joint!”

“What guy?”

“That one in the blue swim trunks… and with the six pack… and the spiky hair…”

Mia whirled around and saw who Maya was talking about. When she finally spotted him, she remembered. It’s the guy Mia got Maya to fess up about when they played the blushing game in the burger joint. Mia chuckled.

“You really like him, huh?”

“Oh my goodness… How could I forget him?”

“Haha maybe you two will meet and go out one day.”

Maya blushed.

“Riiight…”

After a few more minutes of teasing, Maya suddenly caved in.

“Okay, MAYBE it could happen. But, I’m getting thirsty.”

“So am I. Let’s go get drinks.”

“Okay!”

They went to the snack bar. It turned out that the boy Maya saw and fell in love with worked at the snack bar as a summer job.

“Hello. Is there anything I can get you ladies?”

Maya didn’t respond. She bent her head down low. Mia chuckled.

“Ah, yes. Two sodas.”

“Would you like lemon or no?”

“No thanks.”

“Okay, two sodas coming up.”

Mia’s heart dropped. Lemons… Grossberg… She couldn’t believe he was the one who sold out her mother to that insidious man.

“Here you are. Two sodas. That will be two dollars and fifty cents.”

Mia paid him and left.

“Mia, why are you so quiet all of a sudden?”

“Y-You’re one to talk!”

“Yeah, but that reason was obvious!”

“Oh, you were soooo shy! Classic! And you make fun of me for Diego.”

“H-Hey! It’s ‘cause you two are boyfriend and girlfriend, and you’re STILL somewhat shy.”

“I always have been. Always will be.”

“Well, what about with Paul?”

“… Can we please not get into that?”

“S-Sis…”

“It’s just a story I don’t want to get into right now.”

“Okay…”

“You need to steal it.”

“But, why?”

“Because we’re both in this for our own reasons… all of which involve that attorney.”

“Mia Fey.”

Dahlia curved her mouth into a smile and nodded at the man sitting across from her.

“She rejected you… and is now after me to put me away for life.”

“Hmph. She was always a pistol.”

“You need to throw Doug off the scent. I think he saw me steal the poison. So, you need to steal something else.”

“But what?”

“I don’t know! Just pick something!”

“Okay, fine!”

“We’re in this together, Paul.”

* * *

“You never answered me, Sis.”

The two of them finally arrived back at Mia’s apartment after their long day out. After they showered, they dressed in their pajamas.

“Why do all heart-to-heart conversations seem to occur at night?”

“It’s a rule. Now, tell me, Sis.”

“It just reminded me of something with…”

“With what?”

“… Mother…”

Maya mouthed the word ‘oh’. Mia sat on the futon and became dazed. She didn’t want to tell Maya about Grossberg’s involvement. Maya decided to break Mia’s trance by speaking.

“Mia, you should go to bed… you don’t look too good.”

“I-I… I don’t even know what I’m feeling. I’m feeling so many different things at once.”

“Do you want me to call Diego over here?”

“Why?”

“He’ll be able to get you to go to bed.”

“True…”

“And besides… you wouldn’t be alone in that bed.”

“M-Maya!!!”

“Heh heh!”

Mia shook her head, taken by surprise.

“Mia, I’ll stay with you tonight, though. Seriously. I mean, it’s my last night, after all.”

Mia nodded.

“Okay, Maya.”

Once in the bed, Mia shut off the lights. Her sister snuggled close to her.

“Hey, Mia?”

“Yeah?”

“If it seems like I tease you too much… it comes from love.”

“It’s a sister thing, Maya. Don’t worry about it.”

Okay, now that more people are caught up, here's Chapter Forty-Three! Starting to close in on this a little bit more... Still not done.

Spoiler: Chapter 43: Early Morning Messages
“Next week?!”

“That’s right, Kitten.”

“A-Are you sure you’re up to this?”

“Ha…! I got what I needed.”

“What do you mean?”

“Have you forgotten? I managed to get the owner of that company to talk. The poison was indeed opitrioxide. But, that’s not all. The fingerprints on the vial were Jared Hawthorne’s.”

“What?!”

“I think it’s actually really simple. That man… his intent with your aunt was a high rank in the community, correct?”

“Yes…”

“So, he never loved her?”

“Not at all. He seemed to be a bitter man.”

“The question that’s been bugging me was this: Why would he have a vial of poison at the Fey Manor? He needed it for the government officials. Why would it be where we found it?”

“Is it possible that he poisoned the jewels there?”

“No. The vial was still sealed. This is my theory. It was a time bomb, so to speak. If Morgan ever found out about his plans and tried to stop him, he would ‘deal with her’ at any given moment.”

“Why would she rat him out like that, though?”

“The limelight, Kitten. Jared Hawthorne was a famous, well-respected man. If it was his own wife that turned him in, she would certainly receive a lot of media attention and gain more respect, playing the role as the ‘Good Samaritan’.”

“Diego…”

“Yes?”

“You lost me.”

“What…?”

“What does all this have to do with Dahlia?”

“You caught me.”

“What do you mean?”

“That’s the question I was about to answer for you. Dahlia’s fingerprints were on this vial as well. To bridge this all together, she knew full well that her father harbored such a poison.”

“How’d she know what it was?”

Diego paused for a moment. Then, after much thinking, he answered.

“It’s from your homeland, Kitten.”

“What?”

“Hey now. It’s only natural. A kitten will always examine its litter box before putting it to use.”

“Okay, you’re making more metaphors that make no sense lately.”

“Dahlia found it. She found where the source of the poison is.”

“Can we prove it?”

“I think we’ve got enough proof for this.”

“Diego, please don’t confront her.”

“Why not?”

“Just think of what she could do to you!”

“Look at what she did to YOU! I’m not giving this up without a fight!”

“Do you really want to cause me anymore damage?! It would break me even more if she did something to you!”

“I’ll be okay!”

“How do you know?!”

By this time, the tears started to roll out of Mia’s eyes.

“I’ve been through a lot already!”

“I don’t want to lose you!”

Mia threw her hands around Diego’s head and kissed him passionately, still in frustration and worry. The tears continued to roll down, but she couldn’t hold them back. After what seemed like days, the kiss broke. Diego paused before speaking.

“I have to… please…”

“… The problem is I KNOW you have to…”

“We both know… we knew this day would come… just not so soon.”

“Just remember that I love you.”

“I could never forget that… as long as you remember I love YOU, too.”

“And that’s what keeps me going.”

* * *

“Ms. Hawthorne, I know about the opitrioxide.”

“… Oh. Do you now?”

“Yes. That’s what killed Terry Fawles.”

“Well done, Mr. Armando.”

“Excuse me?”

“You’ve done well. It’s just a shame that your persistence led you to no good.”

Dahlia pulled out a pistol.

*BANG*

“UWAAAAAH!”

“Ahhhhhh!”

The last scream came from Mia as she awoke from her dream. She had nightmares about the confrontation for the past couple of days. The thought of Diego meeting with Dahlia about her past frightened Mia to no end. Despite her efforts to stop Diego from meeting with her, the point was moot. He would confront Dahlia and try to bring her to justice. The next thing she knew, Mia was picking up her phone and dialing a number. The clock on her phone read 3:14am, but she still kept dialing. As expected, she reached the voicemail of who she was calling.

“Hey, this is Diego. Please state your name, business, and coffee blend of choice.”

Mia chuckled slightly. She heard the beep and left a message, half asleep.

“Hey, baby, it’s me. I know it’s early in the morning, but I want to leave this message for you to say how much I love you. Life without you wouldn’t be the same, and I can’t imagine the thought of losing you. I-I want you by my s-side… forever. I love you so much. Good night… or good morning…? Or whatever.”

Chapter forty-four! A few more to go!

Spoiler: Chapter 44: The Meeting
The night before the confrontation, Mia invited Diego over for the night. They were enjoying themselves up until the subject of the next day was brought up, which occurred when they were sitting together on the futon with mugs of coffee.

“Is this why you invited me over tonight?”

“Not exactly… it’s just…”

“Just what, Mia?”

Mia felt a shiver go down her spine. She could feel the tension building. Mia put down her coffee mug.

“… Just drop it.”

“Why?”

“I think I’ve said enough about it before. Let’s just enjoy the night. Please?”

Diego sighed. He put down his mug.

“Alright. Besides, I think I could use a little bit of Mia right now…”

He lightly kissed her. She giggled.

“You’ve really gotten good at this cheesiness thing.”

“Wait! How many times have you told me that cheesiness is sometimes a good thing?”

“It is! As a matter of fact…”

“Is the kitten feeling frisky?”

“You tell me… you seem to be a zoologist.”

She gave him a quick peck on the lips.

“Mmm… not a zoologist, my dear. More of a lion… an experienced kitten… a full grown cat.”

“So, that’s where your mane comes from.”

Diego’s mouth slightly curved downward.

“I thought you liked my hair.”

Mia ran her hand through Diego’s hair.

“I do. It’s so thick… thank goodness my hair grew back. I wasn’t sure I could deal with hair that short.”

“Ha…! You’d look beautiful no matter what kind of hairstyle you had.”

Mia smiled as he kissed her. The kiss grew more and more passionate as it went on. Mia was just grateful that Diego was there.

* * *

“Where’s my tie?”

“It’s on the floor!”

Mia picked up Diego’s tie from her bedroom floor. She started tying around his neck for him.

“How’d it get down there?”

“Gee, I don’t know… maybe it has to do with me forcing it off you last night when we decided to burst through my bedroom door while making out.”

“Watch your sarcasm, Kitten. It might drip on my tie. I have to look top-notch for this.”

“For a meeting with a murderer?”

“Exactly.”

Mia shook her head. Once she finished tying the tie, she moved on to give Diego his coffee. He was by the front door, ready to leave.

“I’ll meet you at the courthouse in about an hour, okay?”

“Okay.”

He kissed her for about twenty seconds. Mia didn’t want to let go. She wanted him to stay there with her, safe and sound. She knew he couldn’t, though. So, she pulled away.

“Bye.”

“Goodbye, my kitten.”

With that, Diego exited Mia’s apartment. She flung herself on the futon, exhaling a gigantic sigh. She decided to unwind with some coffee before going to the courthouse.

Mia arrived at the courthouse about twenty minutes after Diego began his session with Dahlia. She looked through the cafeteria window to see Diego sitting across from Dahlia. He seemed to be explaining something to her. Mia was lost in the image until a voice snapped her out of it.

“Hello, Mia.”

She turned around to see her ex-boyfriend, Paul.

“Hey… what are you doing here?”

“To see you.”

“M-Me?”

“I hear you have a new lover now… quite the little heartbreaker you are.”

“Now’s not the time, Paul.”

“You’re the one that got away.”

“You cheated.”

“But, I always came back for you.”

“To have your way with me.”

“And what’s wrong with that?”

“That’s exactly the problem. That was a few years ago, Paul. It’s done and over with. Now, just let me go.”

“I’m sorry, Mia…”

Paul put a hand on her cheek.

“What?”

“Dearest Mia…”

He took his hand off her cheek quickly.

“Paul…?”

“I’m afraid I can’t let you do that.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You haven’t asked me what I’ve been up to.”

Mia was quickly getting annoyed.

“Okay, what have you been up to, Paul?”

“You know… the usual… having my way with girls, as you put it… working…”

“Where are you working?”

“I’m working for a delicate flower, if you will. Not so delicate on the inside, though.”

“How interesting… wait a second… what did you just say?”

“I’m working with a not-so-delicate person.”

“Didn’t you describe them as a flower?”

“Why, yes I did. Remind you of someone?”

“You work for her.”

“So what if I do?”

“Well, now I know why the sickness in my stomach is worse than it was after we broke up.”

“Oh, come now.”

“What?”

“It wasn’t all THAT bad, was it?”

“It wasn’t for you. It was for me. Now, I’ve got to go.”

“I’m sorry… I still can’t let you do that.”

Just then, Mia heard screams come from the cafeteria. She looked through the window and saw an image that pierced through her heart. Diego’s coffee was spilled, and Diego was sprawled on the table. Mia rushed out of the room immediately. The last thing she heard from Paul was a laugh.

“DIEGO!!!!”

She reached her boyfriend with tears flowing down her face. He was still barely breathing. His eyes were slightly open.

“Diego! Please answer me!”

“… K-Kitten…”

“D-Diego…!”

“… S-She… t-t-tricked m-me…”

“What happened?!”

“… P-Poison… I-I think… I-I was p-poisoned…”

“Someone call for help!!!!!”

A bystander heard her and told her help was already called. Mia was squeezing Diego’s hand as tightly as she could.

“… M-Mia… I-I…”

“Wh-What is it, D-Diego?”

“… T-The o-o-only t-time a lawyer c-can c-cry is when it’s a-all o-over…”

“D-Diego…”

“… R-Remember one t-thing… I-I l-l-love y-you, Kitten…”

Diego’s eyes shut. Mia felt Diego’s grip loosen.

“N-No…NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Mia ran into the hospital, hysterical. Grossberg drove her there. It was killing her to see Diego being wheeled into the hospital on a gurney.

“Diego, if you can hear me, please don’t go! Don’t leave me!”

“Ma’am, we’re going to have to ask you to wait now.”

“No!”

“Please, Ma’am!”

“… Okay. I’m sorry…”

The nurse put a hand on Mia’s shoulder.

“It’s understandable, dear.”

They rushed Diego into the emergency room. Mia paced the waiting room, sobbing and running her hands through her hair. Grossberg was sitting in one of the chairs. He hated seeing Mia so frantic. He also hated seeing Diego so weak and fragile. They could both tell Diego was in pain.

“Mia…”

Mia suddenly stopped in her tracks and looked at Grossberg.

“I’m so sorry…”

“H-He… He was just t-trying to catch Dahlia…”

“I know… whatever happens… I-I… well, just know he was doing it for you.”

“How do you know?”

“It’s easy to tell. That woman warped your life. He wanted to give her the payback she deserved. He tried… for your sake.”

Mia sat in a nearby chair. She couldn’t take it anymore. She didn’t want Diego to go.

Diego… please… you can’t leave me…

Mia was laying in her bed that night, the words repeating over and over in her mind. ‘Your boyfriend is in a coma’… those words crushed her. The only reason she went home that night was because Grossberg convinced her it’s what Diego would have wanted. He wouldn’t want her to stay in the hospital, pulling her hair out.

What if he dies when I’m not there? This can’t be happening.

The next morning, Mia didn’t go to work. She had to wait for visiting hours at the hospital to start. The whole situation with Diego made Mia lose much sleep. The phone rang, and it made Mia’s head ache. She picked it up anyway.

“Hello?”

“Sis!”

“Oh, hey, Maya…”

“… Sis, what’s wrong?”

“… Maya… I don’t want to tell you over the phone.”

“Why can’t you understand that it’s okay to tell me things over the phone? I’ll be fine, Sis. I’m not alone. I’m talking to you, aren’t I? You’re voice is enough comfort. As much as I want to feel your arms around me in comfort, your voice will be enough. Don’t worry. Just tell me.”

“… Diego… H-H-He…”

“What happened?!”

Mia told Maya everything. Maya started crying.

“Th-That’s t-terrible! S-Sis! I’m so s-sorry…!”

Both sisters were crying.

“M-Me too, Maya…”

“Are you going to see him?!”

“As soon as visiting hours start.”

“Bring some coffee. Maybe he’ll wake up.”

“I’m also bringing a journal.”

“A journal?”

“Something to kind of keep my mind off of things… something to let him know I was there… y’know, in case he wakes up when I’m not there.”

“I see… well, when I visit in a couple of weeks, I’m coming, too.”

“I’m not sure I want you to see this, Maya.”

“But, I want to, Sis. Please… I love Diego… you know… like a brother.”

“I understand. Okay. We’ll visit him together.”

Dear Diego,

I’m writing to you in case you wake up when I’m not here. I figured we could both use a little cheering up… you know, when you wake up and everything, I’m sure you’d want something to cheer you up… I guess I should have just requested the nurse to bring coffee or something. Listen… or read… or whatever. I could just write ‘I told you so’ over and over again, but I realize something. We both knew you had to meet with her. This is her cowardly way of trying to escape her crime. It looks like she put a new one on her record… she won’t get away with this, Diego. I swear it.
But, onto a more cheerful note… uhh… the weather is nice? See, I’m just a mess without you. I need you to wake up as soon as you can. Maya really wants to visit, so she’s coming in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, you’ll wake up before then. Grossberg tried to cheer me up, of course… hemorrhoid jokes… ugh. Do you remember how I was after the Terry Fawles trial? It was one of the darkest times in my life (until now, of course). But, one person, other than my sister, reached out to me. It was you. I love you, Diego Armando. I don’t want to live without you.

“Excuse me?”

“It’s DABDA, m’dear.”

“What’s DABDA, Mr. Grossberg?”

“The Five Stages of Grief.”

“What does it stand for?”

“Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. DABDA!”

“Okay, I get it! And you’re saying I’m going through this?”

“Yes, I am. My point of telling you this is because I want you to take some time off.”

“Why’s that?”

“Well, you’re current state might put you in a position which might anger some clients who aren’t informed of the situation.”

“I see… it’s all about the clients.”

“Mia… it’s for the better.”

“Tell that to my mother!”

“I… I beg your pardon?”

“I know what you did! Don’t lie to me!”

“What?!”

“Don’t play dumb. You sold her out! To Redd White!”

“M-M-Mia…!”

“I’m done! I can’t take any of this anymore!”

With that, Mia stormed out of Grossberg’s office.

Chapter Forty-Six!

Dear Diego,
I can’t believe you’re in such a state. Every time I come to the hospital, I just seem to be in more shock than I was the first time. Maya is here with me. She wants to say something apparently… she’s been eyeing me the whole time I’ve been writing… either she wants to write or she wants burgers.
Mia’s wrong!!! It’s BOTH! I wanted to write to you AND I want burgers!!! You know what I also want, Diego? I want you to wake up! Mia needs you. She is lost without you. So, please wake up soon? I need you, too.

P.S.: (This is Mia) I love you, Diego. Forever and always.

A nurse opened the door, letting in an unexpected visitor. It was Darren. His facial expression held much sympathy and sorrow. He patted Maya’s shoulder.

“Hey, Maya.”

“Hey, Darren.”

Darren moved behind the chair next to Maya’s, where Mia was sitting. He put both hands on her shoulders. Mia placed her left hand on Darren’s. He suddenly spoke softly.

“Hey.”

“Hey…”

“I’m so sorry, Mia…”

“It’s not your fault.”

“It’s not yours either.”

“What do you mean?”

“You shouldn’t blame yourself for this.”

“How do you…?”

“Know that you would? I know you. It’s not your fault, Mia.”

“… He didn’t deserve this.”

Darren crouched down, making his mouth level with Mia’s ear. He whispered to her.

“I know… Just remember one thing… He won’t leave your thoughts, and you won’t leave his.”

Tears rolled out of Mia’s eyes.

“… Thank you, Darren…”

Darren kissed Mia’s cheek.

“Anytime… mind if I sit with you guys for a while?”

“Not at all.”

* * *

“So, Sis, what’s with Darren kissing your cheek today?”

Maya and Mia were turning down the bed covers. Maya stayed in Mia’s bed to calm her sister down.

“We’re just comfortable enough with each other to where we could do that. I love him like a brother, in a way. He was my ex, but we still care about each other very much.”

“It was nice of him to visit.”

“Yes, it was.”

The two sisters were in the bed at that point, finding a comfortable spot.

“Maya, I’m sorry for dragging you to the hospital every day.”

“Mia, I want to go. Diego’s like family to me.”

“I know…”

“Don’t tell Aunt Morgan… she doesn’t know.”

“I wasn’t planning to tell her. She’ll find out eventually, but it’s not the right time.”

“I know… Mia?”

“Hmm?”

“You’re not crying right now… you cried yourself to sleep every night… but not right now… why?”

“I remembered something Diego told me.”

“What’s that?”

“The only time a lawyer can cry is when it’s all over.”

“So, it’s not over?”

“No… I’ll put Dahlia where she belongs…”

“And Diego?”

“What about him?”

“Do you think he’ll be okay? Will he wake up?”

“I believe he will. Some day, Maya. I know he’s going to wake up.”

Dear Diego,
There’s so much for me to write. Each day that I’m here, I’m anxious for you to wake up. I wanted to make you drink coffee, but the nurses wouldn’t let me. Darren was here. He left you a couple of bags of coffee beans. I told him how much you loved coffee. He also gave you an autographed copy of their CD. He hopes you enjoy it. I know you like jazz, but hey, who knows? Maybe you’ll enjoy alternative rock, too. I swear that I’ll bring Dahlia to justice… I’ll give her what she deserves. If she thinks she can get away with poisoning my boyfriend, she is dead wrong.
Diego, Mia is going crazy…
Maya took the pen away from me. I’m not CRAZY… I’m just frantic.
A wreck without you!
Oh, hush, Maya… Anyway, I guess I should stop playing pen wars with my sister… I love you, Diego.
I have questions for you when you get back, Diego! For example, when are we going to read through Mia’s diary that we found?
Never! Anyway, I love you, and I’ll be writing tomorrow!
Wrong! Bye, Diego!
P.S.: I listened to the CD. Personally, I thought it was brilliant.

Mia put down the journal and sighed. Maybe Maya was right. She did seem to be a wreck. When she went in the hospital parking lot that night, she saw Darren again.

“Mia…”

“Darren. Why are you here?”

“There’s something I have to tell you…”

I write, and write, and write, but never get around to putting these up... Chapter forty-seven... wow, this is a long story... as it should be.
Phoenix Minamimoto: Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoy my work! I'm sure you'll enjoy Law, Lust, and Coffee. It's my favorite, actually. It's long, though, because I put so much detail and storyline into it. Hope you like it!

Spoiler: Chapter 47: A Fresh Start
Mia and Darren stood outside Diego’s room. A tall, red haired boy stood next to Darren. He appeared to be in his very early twenties.

“What did you need to tell me, Darren?”

“Two things, actually. First off, there’s someone I want you to meet. This is Doug, Dahlia’s ex boyfriend. Doug, this is Mia, Diego’s girlfriend.”

Doug extended his hand out for a handshake.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mia.”

Mia shook Doug’s hand gingerly.

“A pleasure to meet you, too.”

“I’m terribly sorry for what happened.”

“It’s not your fault… it’s your ex’s fault.”

“I came here today not to only express my condolences, but to hopefully give you some closure?”

“Closure?”

“I have a little information for you…”

“Information?”

“Dahlia… She… Well, let’s just say it was easy for her to get poison… you know her father, right?”

“Unfortunately, yeah.”

“It was easy for her to get that poison.”

“So, it was the same poison?”

“Not exactly. It’s a sister poison. Something similar to it. This would be it’s first use… unfortunately.”

“I see…”

“I wish I could be more helpful.”

“No, you’ve been very helpful. Thank you.”

Doug hugged Mia in an effort to give her more comfort.

“Enjoy the rest of your day, Mia.”

“You too, Doug.”

With that, Doug left. Darren sighed. Mia looked into his eyes.

“You said there were two things.”

“I did.”

“What’s the second?”

“I-I… I’m here for you if you need anything…”

“… That’s it?”

Darren could only bring himself to nod. Mia gave a confused expression, but she just shrugged shortly after.

“I already knew that, Darren. I have to go. Bye.”

She hugged him.

“Bye…”

Mia walked out of the hospital. Darren’s heart sunk.

What were you thinking, Darren? She’s vulnerable right now. Thank goodness you decided to chicken out. Now’s not the time to tell her you love her all over again.

Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months. Every day, Mia visited the hospital. She wrote in the journal every day. Finally, she was able to write in a page and wear a grin on her face at the same time.

Dear Diego,
I finally did it! I finally put Dahlia in her place! She’s behind bars, where she belongs. This victory was for you… and for my client, of course. He was a very “interesting” man. But, hey, who knows? Maybe he’ll change. He plans on becoming a lawyer, too! All he needs is a bit of maturing. I can’t believe I won my second case in court. Remember the first case I had? The Terry Fawles case? Remember how you were there for me? I could never forget the kindness you gave me that day even if I tried. I miss you, Diego. I’ve been longing to be in your arms every day. It’s where I felt safest. But, you know, I think I’ll be okay. I’m going to have a fresh start, build up my own law office. I’ll be here when you wake up. You’ll always be my sanctuary. Never forget that. I love you.

-- 3 Years Later --

“Phoenix, I have to run an errand. Would you mind watching the office for a while?”

A much more mature Phoenix Wright stood in front of Mia’s desk.

“Sure, Chief!”

“Okay, thanks! Bye!”

Phoenix was unaware of where Mia went every day. He was too nervous to ask since she was his boss. He didn’t want to put her on the spot. It piqued his curiosity, though. About an hour later, she came back.

“Any calls, Phoenix?”

“None, Chief.”

“Ah, slow business today.”

“Yeah… Hey, Chief?”

“Yes?”

“I have a bit of a personal question… you don’t have to answer if it’s too personal.”

“O-Okay…? Shoot.”

“Where do you rush off to every day?”

Mia paused for a moment.

“Chief, like I said…”

“No, Phoenix. It’s okay. I’ll answer. You may want to sit down, though. It’s a bit of a long story.”

They sat on the couch, and Mia told him about Diego. Phoenix listened and sympathized with Mia.

“… And that’s about it.”

“Chief…”

He put an arm around Mia’s shoulders. A tear escaped from Mia’s eye.

“… It’s just been hard…”

“I understand… I’m here for you. I-I… I had no idea…”

“It’s okay…”

“That man Dahlia poisoned… I didn’t know he was your boyfriend… I feel responsible now…”

“Don’t. None of it was your fault.”

There was a knock on the door. Phoenix jumped up to open it. Darren was on the other side. His hair was down from it’s usual fauxhawk, despite the fact there was still clearly some gel in it. He wore a white collared dress shirt, with the sleeves rolled up, and a black tie.

“Who are you?”

“Darren Roberts. Is Mia here?”

Mia stood up and moved towards the door to see Darren.

“Darren! How are you?”

“I’m pretty good, Mia. And you?”

“I’m okay myself. You’re looking quite spiffy!”

He threw back his head and laughed.

“Haha I guess you could put it that way, yes. Can I speak to you alone?”

“Sure!”

Phoenix headed out the door, towards the reception office.

“I’ll just organize some files.”

He closed the door behind him.

“Listen, Mia… There’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you for a while now… and I didn’t know how to tell you because of Diego…”

“What is it?”

“I…”

“Just tell me straight out.”

“I love you, Mia Fey.”

Chapter forty-eight!

"What...?"

"I love you, Mia Fey. I've been holding this in for three years."

"Darren..."

"Mia, you can't limit yourself to a comatose man."

"I still love him with all my heart."

"I understand. I just don't want to see you hurt anymore."

"It'll hurt me more to dive into a relationship with you. I'll feel unfaithful."

"It's like loving a dead man, Mia!"

"He's not dead! For years, people have suggested he's dead. He's not! He just hasn't woken up yet!"

"I just can't stand to see you hurt every time you visit that hospital! Do you know how long I've held my tongue? There were so many times I came close to saying something. Well, I'm saying it now! You can't keep this up, Mia!"

Phoenix stood up to speak.

"Listen. Darren, was it?"

"And you are?"

"Phoenix Wright."

"Oh, so you'll get in a relationship with Spike here, but not me?!"

"We're not together, pal! I'm her apprentice! Listen to me. Mia still loves Diego. It takes two to form a relationship. It's her choice, too, and you can't stop that!"

Mia decided to chime in once more.

"Darren, you're such a sweet guy, but sometimes, I wish you understood me a little better."

Silence infiltrated the room. Darren lowered his head and crossed his arms. Then, he spoke.

"Look, I'm sorry... I just... It needed to come out..."

"I understand..."

-- A Couple Years Later: Diego's Hospital Room --

"Dr. James, can you look at these reports quickly?"

"In a second, Nurse Fowler. Let me finish making my coffee."

Once the mug was filled, the doctor inhaled the fumes. He let out a sigh of relief.

"Ahh... There's nothing in the world like coffee..."

Suddenly, a groan was heard from a hospital bed. The groan belonged to one Diego Armando.

"D-Doctor!!!"

"Quickly! Put the mask on him!"

The nurse placed Diego's mask over his face. Finally, Diego was able to speak.

"Wh-What happened...?"

"Hello, Mr. Armando. My name is Doctor Henry James."

"N-Nice to meet you... can you answer my question now?"

The doctor handed Diego a stack of journals. Diego flipped through the pages. They were dated consecutively. Not one day was missing. He immediately recognized the handwriting.

"That's right. She visited you every day. She wrote to you each time she was here."

"Where is she?"

The doctor hesitated. This confused and worried Diego at the same time. The doctor sighed.

"Mr. Armando... she... well... she passed away..."
