Phoenix Wright: The Eternal Cases

Hey guys how's it going? I'm working on a new fangame. Basically, it's a series of Phoenix wright cases that take place during the short period of time between T&T case 5 and Phoenix's last trial. I'm currently only planning the plot of the game.

needed for the game

Right now, there's not much that can be done :sadshoe: however, what I do need, is help with plotting (not, much, I'll be doing most of that myself), scripting, and spriting. I'm putting the details below.
Spoiler: Plotting
nothing much right now, I'm currently working on the plot for the first case if you want to help though, reply and I'll PM you the notes for a different case

Spoiler: Scripting
Ask me first if you want to help, so I can tell you some of the details, but the main synopsis us below if I'm not responding

Spoiler: Spriting
Unfortunately, the only non-spoiler sprites i need right now are: Payne with a new 'do, and Mila Fey. Notes about Mila: She Must be in fey garb, and she must have orange hair.
If you want to work on others, ask me and I will send you the details for the spoiler characters.

case synopses
Spoiler: Case 1: Turnabout Bride
Maggy Byrde has finally found herself a boyfriend, settled in, and is about to get married. However, just before the ceremony, “Lady Luckless” returns... The groom is murdered, the bride accused, and the defense attorney is completely forgetting his own methods!

New Characters I'm sure of:
Spoiler: Anthony Trane
Image
Age: 38
Occupation: Ex-Defence attorney.
He used to be a defense attorney of some renown. For some unknown reason, he was thrown out of the courts. He's an important witness in case 2.
An overall nice person. He enjoys helping others.

Spoiler: Blake Lucifer
Age:32
Profession: Prosecutor
The main prosecutor of the game.
A ruthless prosecutor. Hates defense attorneys and detectives for some unknown reason.

Spoiler: Bruce Smith
Age: 36
Profession: Detective
One of the more famous detectives. He was known around the country until about 16 years ago.
Cunning and slightly unforgiving. Has a nasty habit of adding "Ergo" to the end of his sentences.

Spoiler: Vincent Delance
Age: 54
Profession: Retired

A noble gentleman. Despises criminals.

A Note: There will probably be a massive amount of plot holes by the end, so if you're good at nitpicking, I strongly encourage you to join the team.

Though it seems likely that I'll use PyWright, the topic is open for discussion. :keiko:

If anybody out there wants to help out, suggest anything, or criticize what work i've already got, just ask and I'd be happy to show you what I already have! :redd:

First of all, make a nice list of what you need help with. Whether it's sprites, or planning, or writing, or coding, or whatever.

Second, I would recommend putting everything (or a good chunk) in spoilers tags in your main post. This way anyone who wants to help and comment on what you have can do so without having to ask you and wait for you to respond.

(Also, just a tip: Focus on one case. If you don't, your fangame will most likely die very quickly.)

Spoiler:
You said you have no idea for case 2 and 3. If you aren't planning on putting anything related to the overall plot in them, scrap them. If you are, see if you can fit it into case 1 or 4.

You don't want to be doing "filler" cases; you should only do cases that directly relate to the overarching story.

Sorry, want I meant is that there WILL be plot related to the overall story there, I'm just not sure about the individual plots of the cases themselves. Unfortunately, I need cases 2 and 3 for very specific reasons (character introductions, evidence that's important to the overall story) basically, stuff that couldn't possibly happen in cases 1,4, or 5.

Well, heres a sample, of a regular PW style sprite. Question Is: You want OC PW style sprites? Those aren't very hard to make.

I would suggest using PWLib or PyWright, since they are both quite powerful. PWLib has closer emulation to the actual games, but it is harder to learn. PyWright is good too, though not as good as PWLib, it's easier to use.

Or use AAO, no programming involved.

I was thinking of using Pwlib, but I just found out that it might not be for mac. I couldn't confirm this anywhere, so I was hoping if anybody could confirm it for me. Can anybody do so? I'd be eternally grateful.

The only way (for now) to make PWLib (AIGE by that matter) work on Mac is using Bootcamp.

AIGE has this "limitation" because it uses DirectX as its graphic render api (as well use some Windows functions). I wish they had a working version of Wine for the mac. Would settle a lot of issues. (I haven't check it, neither tested it yet).

Hmmm. as I don't have a mac, I don't have how to test, but: http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM... :think-pw: :think-pw: :think-pw: :think-pw: :think-pw: :think-pw: :think-pw:

Okay, I've decided. I'm going to be using PwLib. If it works on bootcamp (which I have yet to test), then it sound like it would work better all around. Even if I can't acess it from my laptop, it would probably still work with more elbow-room (Pardon me if I used that expression wrong) than PyWright.

Unless someone would like to show some evidence as to why PyWright is better?

PyWright is designed to be flexible and easier with its Wrightscript to the new user while cutting back on perfect emulation. I don't know if KSA does not want me to say this but, it's not too spoilery. He showed me a sample script of 1.2 (based on the PWLib in a Nutshell Tutorial) and I will say, it is made far more simpler and easier to use while maintaining the flexibility for more complex-coding. There's "eco-scripting" and there's the complex scripting that we all know and love/hate, and that's saying it lightly.

I'll set an example; I have over 7000 lines of code (the most right now for any PWLib game known (RotP probably has more, but not sure how much they have), with the eco-scripting that KSA developed, I can reduce it do a good 4500 lines I believe. Plus, PWLib Unleashed will be developed to help understand 1.2 RC1 when its out. We're developing the book layout (when we feel like it lol). I want to say for 1.2, there's no excuse to say that PWLib is harder (just for the focus of making an Ace Attorney fangame).

You know my bias, hehe.

Since you've heard the case in favour of PWLib (a fine engine in many regards, and of which I suspect Radex's game will finally show all the possibilities), let me argue for the opposite side so you will know all the pros and cons and thus make the optimal decision for you, whatever it is.

PyWright is:
- Updated frequently, with saluk tailoring the engine to the game creator's specific needs.
- Much easier to use from the developer's pov. In practice, even AAO is more complicated. PWLib 1.2 might change that, but a) I doubt it b) 1.2 has been announced for over a year now, and we have yet to see it.
- Less frustrating to download from the player's pov.
- Several full cases have already been made with it, which makes your job even simpler since you can just copy from the scripts.
- PyWright games have a track record of success. PWLib games have a track record of being stuck in development (though, to be fair, that's about to change). Perhaps it is a coincidence that the best AA fangames so far have generally been made in PyWright ; but perhaps it isn't.

However, PWLib is certainly more powerful and emulates the real games (especially the menus) a little better. Also, a huge downside to choosing PyWright is that you've publicly expressed interest in PWLib, so if you change your mind now, you will be called a "traitor" and put on a hit list.

In your particular case, you will have to balance the cost of using bootcamp + potentially much longer development time with the psychological cost of having to justify using PyWright + the slight departure from perfect emulation.

Of course, that's just my very biased opinion.

I'd have to agree with this. But my theory is, like Ping' already pointed out, just the amount of code. For example, with PyWright, to create a character animation, you just have to create a .gif, use saluk's gif2strip conversion program, and then create a short .txt file. However, with PWLib, (to the best of my memory, anyways) you have to program a ton of text for every animation. For example, when I have time, I can maybe program 1-2 scenes in a day, just because of the simplicity of the code. But, I, like Ping', no nothing about PWLib 1.2, and could be off the mark here.

There are two success PWLib games, both are court cases though:

Damion Shard: Ace Attorney: games/damion-shard-ace-attorney-for-pwlib-demo-available-t13368.html?hilit=damion%20shard
Phoenix Wright: Trials of Life: games/phoenix-wright-trials-life-looking-for-sprite-editors-t8750.html

So, to minimize everything that is said and minimizing off-topicness. You see both sides; Ping shows more substance that's for sure. You can refer to my fangame topic to see how things are emulated (graphically).

And as to showing the full potential in PWLib (not AIGE's full potential), I probably am. In order to fix up the slow-pacing of the game as well making it somewhat more interesting, I am taking advantage of the investigation part of PWLib which has not been shown yet. I have yet to code this though. It's minimal though (just a few fun examines and some talking) but it'll give an idea though of how it can be done. The best organized coding is Damion Shard (better than mine for the time being) which will show you an idea of how it's done.

I will say this, I could not care less of what medium you choose (AAO, PyWright, PWLib), pick one that will serve your needs to show your art. I'll admit that I am terribly dependent on PWLib 1.2 in order to bring the full effect of my game which of course is not released yet (of course there are reasons as to why is it like that now, but they're understandable) and is affecting my development, especially the ending phases. I do want to show that I am getting it done (and I have shown it so far) but I am also realistic to say that I could get stuck in development, after all my fangame is not one of my highest priorities.

Try Wine if you can, to see how PWLib will work in it and tell KSA how it's working with Wine.

I want to show the sample script (to show you, Ping, and nudalman) to show how much it has changed but that has to wait.

IT HAS BEEN DECIDED!!!!!!!!! (Cue Drum roll)

All things considered, I have decided to use PyWright. Why? For one simple reason: I seriously doubt I'm going to get enough access to the one computer that has boot camp in my household. Also, I don't really want to risk adding PWLib onto my computer if it wasn't originally intended to be on mac. I just don't have enough memory on my computer to add on programs that could potentially be useless. Also, I feel that if I;m going to have to go the the pain to activate boot camp, go in and activate PWLib, and then deactivate boot camp after I'm finished, then it's just not quite worth the pain. Finally, I'd also rather be able to work on it on my laptop.

Yep, so I decided it without basing it off of the languages themselves. :sillytrucy:

Oh well. Thanks for all the advice and comments!!!

Go ahead, but, since I'm working a couple of other things, I might not be able to make some, but I'll see what I can do.

I'll have them PM'd to you in a minute.

P.S. Take as long as you want, I don't really mind.

P.P.S Just realized, it might take me a minute to PM you, seeing as I have to work out what I didn't ask GantStare to do, and since I haven't heard from him in a while... i have no idea what he's started on and what he hasn't.

Ok, so if you're using PyWright, would you still want me to help code? It's only fair, since you're helping me with the script.

Yeah absolutely!

BTW sorry about the script... sorry it's taking me so long, it shouldn't take me that much longer... I'm just kinda slow...
