Woo 10 years!
Did anyone else notice that yesterday, October 11, was actually the 9th anniversary of the series? "Gyakuten Saiban" was first released October 11, 2001. So we're actually 364 days away from the 10th anniversary. Yay?

If I'm not mistaken, that book reads, in romaji, "Majo Saiban". Which, if it does mean "witch trials", kinda creeps me out, but I can't wait to know what it is. I cleaned up the site's picture a bit, and it looks like this:

Spoiler:
Image

It seems to have, apart from the "Witch Trials" book, some sort of scroll, an ancient candle holder, a feather... and I can't make out what those things on the little tray are. All of them over a wooden desk. Either way, it seems as if the desk's owner were writing something.

Could anyone with a lot of free time on their hands please translate the 10th anniversary site? It seems to have interviews and other possibly interesting info, and Google Translator doesn't help.

And I don't know about everyone else, but "witch trials" makes me think of the Misty Fey incident... Whatever it is, it'll probably be cool/great/amazing. And, like I once said, with GK2 coming out, I'd be alright if it were a trading card game.

EDIT: Also, J-GIRL, what do you mean by "countdown"? I see nothing of the sort, aside from a bunch of "10"s, but those make sense.

I'll be eagerly looking forward to whatever translations are forthcoming.

Particularly related to that "countdown?" business. :damon:

Is that what's written on the book in the ???x??? thing? Maybe it's what Edgey does in GK2... or it could be some completely new thing. It would be awesome if they have something special for the 10th anniversary :3

Also, katakana! Yay! I tried reading/translating some stuff, and would be very happy if someone told me how close I am... :3
Spoiler: katakana
Okay, the four buttons near the top...
トピックス = topikkusu = topics
ラインナップ = lainnappu = line-up
イベント = ibento = event
グッズ = guzzu = no idea

Then to the right
シリース[kanji]サイト = shiriisu[kanji]saito = series [kanji] site

If you click on one of the four links, then above, with the !:
トップページヘ = toppupeejihe = I'm thinking maybe the beginning is "top page" and I might be thinking this just because I learned it today, but perhaps that last へ is hiragana, and the preposition which would make the whole thing "to top page"?

I think "guzzu" means "goods", since... well, the button leads to an URL ending in "goods.html". Same with the other buttons :P
Based on the context, I'm guessing you got everything right, BP. Thanks, and please keep the translations coming! :D

The feather would be a quill pen, and the things in the little tray would be a bottle of ink and its cap, corroborating with your "writing something" hypothesis.

Personally, the first thing I think of upon hearing "witch trials" is the Salem witch trials of 1692/93. Not sure why Japan would much care about that. Perhaps it will have something to do with persecution towards the Fey clan...?

Edit: Actually, the whole "???x???" brings to mind the recent news about Level-5 and Takumi working on a new "Gyakuten" project.

I don't see anything about a countdown either, just see the 10th anniversary stuff.

You did a good job, since you got all the ones you guessed right. The one with the kanji just says series official site.

First thing I thought of when I saw the ???x??? was a Capcom collaboration like all the stuff they did at TGS, wonder if it is. And thinking of the word witch, somehow made me think it was going to be a game with Trucy lol, but it's missing a kanji for it to say magical girl lol.

Which all connects in my mind as "somebody is writing about the persecution of Misty Fey after DL-6".

And after the debunking of the "Gyakuten XX" rumor, I rather not get my hopes up for that collaboration being AA-related.

Well, this is... bizarre. I haven't the faintest idea what it could be, maybe a long-in-advance hint of something else coming up?

(As an aside @ BP: I'm in the same boat; first semester Japanese student here. I can read hiragana/katakana but not understand it.)

Whoa, th-that's fascinating~... :redd:

I thought about Misty Fey, too! Except my thought process went like:
super fancy desk -> Edgeworth-ish -> + oldness factor -> Edgeworth family past? -> Edgeworth's DAD -> DL-6 -> Misty Fey!
... xD; Edgey would not be proud of my terrible logic.

Misty Fey on trial as a witch sounds super interesting, and pretty believable... but I think quill pens are a little ancient for 2001. :sadshoe:
Looks even further into the past than that... or maybe a different setting... I dunno...
There's definitely not enough to go on here, but I'm already dying to know more!

Whoa, now that it's been mentioned, ???×??? does kind of imply... crossover-ish-ness... :think-pw:
If the prospect of that Level 5 teamup were to rise from the ashes... how amazingly awesome that would be...

Anyway, wow, congratulations to the AA series on 10 (generously rounded up xP) years!!
That's amazing. I wish I'd been around the fandom for that long, to truly experience how far the series has come. :phoenix:

I'm not gonna make any assumption about whatever the meaning of this may be now, but rather will allow myself to be surprised! I'm happy with everything new Gyakuten related that they give us.

I just hope that, whatever it is, there's some Naruhodo or Odoroki in it. I'm missing Nick n' Polly. ^^;

Can the witch trials have anything to do with this? Sega asked Capcom if they could use the logo for Tshirts for a contest and they made this for Bayonetta. It makes sense to me.

That sure looks like the answer... whatever it may be... *unfamiliar with "Bayonetta"* :yuusaku:

Anyway, I'm too busy enjoying trying to read through the comments on this Japanese article about the website update.

A great majority of them seem to be suggesting a connection to, uh...something completely different. :hotti: ...No; I'm amused but mostly disturbed by the thought. xP

I thought it was stated that she simply disappeared. I don't recall anyone throughout the entire series mentioning a persecution.

Looking around the site, here's the info I've gathered:
The top page seems to be a compilation of congratulation messages from people who have worked on the GS/GK/AA series. They are, in order:
Masakazu Sugimori (杉森 雅和), composer of GS1/PW:AA's music
Akemi Kimura (木村 明美), composer of GS2/JFA's music
Noriyuki Iwadare (岩垂 徳行), composer of GS3/GK1&2's music
Toshihiko Horiyama (堀山俊彦) composer of GS4/AJ's music
Kumiko Suekane (スエカネクミコ), character designer
Tatsuro Iwamoto (岩元 辰郎), character designer
Kazuya Nuri (塗 和也) character designer
Hirohumi Kurita (栗田 博文), conductor of the orchestra concerts
Tomu Ranju (蘭寿 とむ), actress who played Phoenix in the Takarazuka Revue musical
Kei Suzuki (鈴木圭), director of the Takarazuka Revue musical

There is also an interview with Shu Takumi, the creator of the Ace Attorney series.

If anyone is interested we then could try to translate the messages/interview.

And what's with this 'witch trial"? I can't see the kanji on the book when i go to the site....

I agree with this... I think with the 3DS there will be a new Gyakuten game, if not GS5 yet maybe this project Capcom and Level 5 are working on...

I don't have much to add to this topic except...

LOL @ using the Magic Wand tool. You would've thought they'd have the original PSDs.

~_~_~_~_~_~

More seriously, I don't think this is going to be a game project. Kenji 2 was just announced. You don't want to give gamers a choice between games. They want us to buy both. Announcing 2 games smells like shooting yourself in the foot with regards to profits.

I also doubt it's going to be another musical or concert. Seems too 'big' to be something we've already seen.

~_~_~_~_~_~

Also, something to note...

Image

On the anniversary site, while it does mix the official art from GS2-DS to Kenji 2, it doesn't feature anyone unique to the Kenji series that falls under aid or rival. EG. No Lang, Kay, or Judgette.

To that end, I'm getting the implicit declaration that this is Saiban series related.

But you have to consider that we are the precipice of the 3DS' with many projects already announced and more to come. Among them could be a Gyakuten Saiban revival as Kenji 2 is a DS game.

CR should be watching that front page carefully for the months leading up to Kenji 2's launch. The fact that they changed the image to something more nondescript means they may very well be working on something new and different. It's on the Gyakuten Saiban site so that means whatever it is will be related to the franchise.

Releasing GK2 on the DS and some other game, like GS5, on the 3DS would just guarantee that GK2 is a flop.

Because I'm assuming that most people, if they had to choose between two games that were similar, but with one for the DS and one for the 3DS, they would go for the 3DS. (That is, instead of evenly splitting sales and having both of them sell okay, the 3DS one sells well and the DS one sells poorly.)

I'm with Wooster, that it's probably not a game. I also think the whole Saiban series characters thing is a good observation, and I think they definitely would've had Kay or Lang up there if they were involved. I'm fine with it not being a game... considering all the other awesome stuff they've done that isn't a game, I'm sure it'll be great.

Regardless, I am convinced this ??? x ??? thing is a major project for the series. Unless Capcom's trying to use their official Saiban site as a vector to announce something tangential to the series (which...would be really weird), expect good things.

Also keep in mind that Takumi was as much in the dark on the 3DS as everyone else was at E3. And also at E3 we got the rumors of the Capcom colab project.

So if it's on the 3DS and Takumi and his department are unrelated. It's that or the project has nothing to do with the 3DS. My money is on the latter. Call me 2-3 months after Kenji 2 is out in Japan and then I'll change my song.

Why is the text on the notebook not there now??

Another silenced slip-up...?

Anyway, this looks very very interesting. It could be set in the 600's with the Salem witch trials, that would be a unique path for the series. Or it could be a reference to the spirit mediums, but since when could we call them witches?

You know, I seriously hope this has nothing to do with Bayonetta. What now, she's becoming an attorney? That'd be so lame... It sounds like a geeky fangame by someone who likes both series.

This is definitely part of the AA series, characters included. GS5, perhaps?

Bayonetta belongs to Platinum Games anyway. Unless I missed Platinum and Capcom being in talks to do something, that ain't it.

I think there's a little more weight to the Salem Witch Trials.

The spine of the book is on the left. In Japan the spine is on the right. This implies a western scenario.

The ink well, quill, and candle are all appropriate accessories for the era. Although, not unique to the 1600's.

Still, I can't imagine what scenario they could have in mind about the Salem Trials.

Actually in Platinum website, in the blog, it's said that they had to ask for rights to use the logo and Capcom let them do it (look at the photo that's not a fantshirt, that's actually a price Platinum gave to winners of a contest.

Maybe it's a special case where Nick/Apollo travel back in time or find information hundreds of years old that is about the witch trials - this connects to a present day case about Trucy or the Feys?

Maybe they'll find a way to tie it into the Fey clan?
