Well, it's all relative... I think.

I mean, I'm not even going to suggest that I get more homework than a high-schooled, but I probably also have an earlier bedtime.

In history class, we had to write monologues, and present them. I got perfect, and my teacher said mine was the best written that she's ever heard :D

You haven't seen NOTHING yet. Wait till you get higher up in grades... Your workload now will be laughable compared to what you'll get in the future.

What's with this generation these days? When I was in fifth grade we didn't even HAVE a workload! O_O

I'm sure the amount of work you get in high school is still not that much compared to what you have in college, but for me the most stressful part of the year is the last few weeks before exams, when you have a multitude of projects to work on in all your classes, 2-3 tests a week, and of course, exams to study for. Then again I tend to think things through too much, and as a result I get stressed easily, so it might just be me.

Back in Grade 5 I got tons of work! This one teacher I had would always give me these silly graphs, and then I had to graph a bunch of dots, and then connect them together to make a picture. Sure, it seems like nothing now, especially when the type of math homework I have is way more (for example I spent 3pm to 7pm working on some rather tedious math equations), but for a 10-year old it was really tough! There were so many dots!
But then I did nothing in grade 6, so it all evened out.

I'm in college too, and it is indeed a lot of work! Math was especially bad T_T

And yes final exam weeks are the most stressful times ever.

Does it get worse in the future? Will it get worse in the near future(6th, 7th, and 8th grade)? That sucks a lot if it does. I spent six hours straight last week working on my science project. And not finishing it. Hopefully I'll have more time to do my work when I get to middle school because my district middle school is near our house, it's not like, 30 minutes away or whatever. It's about 5-10 minutes away. They split up people into teams by putting people who have had any type of AL education on one team and people who haven't had any type of AL education on the other. I'm most definitely going to be on the "had AL education" team. That probably means more homework. Crappit. That also probably means more nights where you have to stay up past your bedtime, and I've had to do that a lot this year.

Does it get the worst in 9th grade? If it does, that's bad and good for me. I have Faith Formation on Wednesdays, and Faith Formation ends after you get confirmed(8th grade). So I'll have a lot more time, it's just that I'll have to spend that time doing homework.

Are exams like EOGs or Benchmarks? To me, Benchmarks are harder than EOGs, because you basically know everything that's being asked in the EOG.

I have no idea what a benchmark is, nor an EOG.
And I'm not in university yet, I'm only in the 1th grade. Can't say I'm looking forward to the amount of work I'll be getting then, either.

But back to the questions about high school: I can't really say what high school will be like for you, since I don't go to the high school you go to. For me, there was way more work in high school than in elementary school, but I did very little in elementary school. To be honest, the way I see it the only use of elementary school is to learn the basics of stuff like math, science, english, and whatever and to establish good work ethics, since colleges and universities don't check any of your marks before the 11th grade (or so I hear).

Also, while you can look at it as having more homework in high school and presumably college, I always look at it this way: We have to do more work now, but that's because we're learning more things now, which likely means we're learning more about at least one thing that interests us. I mean, sure, classes like chemistry and math require lots of work and a lot of homework, but some of the things you learn are pretty cool, as opposed to in elementary school. I remember my marks were awful in Grade 8 because I really didn't care about anything we were learning except French.

Then again I'm totally a nerd, and so if you really don't care about school at all, I doubt what I just said will be any comfort to you.

Jesus what is wrong with kids today. 5th graders should NOT be staying up past their bed-times to finish their work! I mean, I never did it in middle school, and I barely did it in high school. (I only remember 2 specific instances where I did it in high school, and both of them were freshman year.)

Anyway, I found that from elementary school to middle school and from middle school to high school, there was a big jump in work, but within the same school the work was about equal. However, in high school you really gotta start worrying about extracurriculars and standardized tests and college apps so it's not just schoolwork. (Protip: Do SATII's (or subject tests or whatever they want to calls them) freshman and sophomore year. You will thank me Junior year when you are only studying for the SAT's, and your friends are studying for the SAT's and a bunch of SATII's. (Or, if you can manage it, study for the SAT's during the summer between junior and sophomore year, and take the SAT's at the beginning of junior year. Then you can laugh at everyone the entire year because they still need to take their tests. Also, it gives you more tries :D)) But lol that's a way's off for you. But it will get there eventually, I suppose. (Also work on college apps during the summer. It helps a lot. (Although, on the other hand, scrambling to get all your apps done and in at the last second is part of the experience))

My experience so far with college has been that there's a lot less classtime, and less actual assignments, but a lot more work xD I guess it's because there's a lot of reading that you need to do that you could really get away with not doing in high school, and because extracurriculars in college are even more compared to in high school xD Another thing is in college there is a ton more room to pick the difficulty of your coursework. So if you pick really difficult classes, it'll obviously be more work. But if you're lame and pick easy classes, then it's less work. (But really difficult classes are not. fun. at all. T_T Pick medium-difficulty classes! :D)

Aaaaanyway, justis, don't believe what they say about college not checking your grades before 11th grade. It's gonna vary from school to school and admission officer to admission officer, but I'm pretty sure in general they look at all of it. Grades are one of the most important factors to admissions officers. They say they place more weight on the 11th and 12th grade grades, but it's not like straight A's in the second half of high school are going to get you into Harvard if you had all D's the first half. (Of course, straight A's in all of high school isn't going to get you into Harvard, so I suppose that's not a very good example xD)

Oh, and lastly: The higher up you go, the less projects and stuff you get. So instead of your english project and history project and math project and science project, it's going to be your english essay, history dbq, math problem set, and science lab report :D

And I'm sure I can outnerd you, justis. I could go on and on about school and stuff cuz I'm a nerd like that :will: (Giving advice is fun. It makes me feel authoritative)

EDIT: Hey, are there even any hs seniors that post in this thread? I'd like someone to laugh at. (I mean, I suppose I could laugh at justis for having to do standardized tests, but college apps are so much more fun to ridicule)

EDIT2: Okay, I lied. I just like talking about me :sadshoe: I regret CR:tG more and more as time goes on.....

I've applied to a Creative Writing & Ceramics course in Bath Spa. I've applied to some others, but that's the one I want to do the most. I haven't finished the full application yet as I'm still going through writing the drafts.

October?! :beef: You canadians are weird.

Also, I did fine on my math midterm! I'm really happy :will: Also, apparently in math the professor will only fail you if you have below a 50. The class is still going to be really hard and stressful... but not unbearable stressful, at least.

Oh, and the schedule I want for second semester has no conflicts, so yay!! (Which would've been a big deal, because out of the 4 classes, 2 of them have only one section and one of them only has 2 sections.)

In reading Bad Player's posts about college, I realize I know very little about it and so I'm probably screwed. -_-

Oh well, at least your information was useful. And fortunately I've been on honor roll since I started high school, so I figure my marks shouldn't be a problem.

Speaking of marks, I did get my report card today. 94 in French, 92 in Biology, 92 in Math... and an 88 in Chemistry.

Which reminds me, I don't suppose that anybody in college is taking science classes or took physics in high school? How important is physics in college? I dropped it at the beginning of the semester and now I hear all of the physics classes are full for next semester, but my chemistry teacher says it's really important for taking a science program in university. FML.

The answer to "How important is [subject] in college?" is "It depends on your major." Obviously, if you're going to be an engineering (or physics :P) major, physics is going to be pretty important. But if you major in English or European History or whatever... not so much.

Or do you mean for getting into college? :P If that's what you mean, then it's not like any one subject is necessary. As long as you take challenging classes. If you didn't take physics because you took Honors Chemistry or you didn't take European History because you took AP American History, it's fine. Obviously, if you take no physics classes and then say you want to be a physics major... >_> (Of course, you can always say "I wanna be a chem major!! :D" and switch to physics as soon as you get accepted xD (Chem, or whatever subject looks good)) I mean, most college programs and majors don't have any prerequisite; if you want to do physics, take 101.

Sign up for physics next year. Because it's awesome :godot:

My chemistry teacher says that I should take physics if I want to get into any science-related program.

I don't even know what the heck he means by "program".
I mean, I don't even know what I'm planning on doing in university anyways, so I'm hoping to keep my options open.

Well, some schools have things called "Integrated Science Programs" which are... well... a lot of sciences integrated. For some of them you need to apply to get in (you can't just do it like a major) so physics might help you with that. But if he means just to have a major in the sciences... Well, I don't really know xD I mean, they might look to see if you've taken physics if you say you want to have a science major, but I don't really know. If you say you wanna be a chem major and you've taken a lot of chem classes or with bio or whatever, I'd imagine not having physics classes wouldn't be a dealbreaker. I mean, depending on what you want to study, biophysics or geophysics or something would be a good class to take, but that would be in college, not high school.

If you're really concerned about physics hurting your chances, just take it next year. (I mean, I have a friend at Cornell that's in a science program who only did 1 year of the lowest-level physics our school offered senior year. Of course, he's gonna major in biology (or something like that) and took AP Bio, AP Psych, and did independent research on some random topic in biology, so... I'm pretty sure he would've gotten in just fine without the physics.)

the three main science courses that colleges look at are biology, chemistry, and physics (says my school).

so, i accidentally fell into a regular geometry class this year, and it is pretty bizarre. there are only five other freshmen in the class and everyone else is a sophomore.

even weirder- i have the highest grade in the class, and i only have a 95%.
the majority of the people in the class have high 70's, and there's even one kid that gets something in the 40's.

IT'S GEOMETRY, YOU GUYS.

Bah, I went to Catholic school for 5th grade. That year was probably the worst of my life. I had shoulder problems because of the massive amount of work I had to carry home each day. Up late every night, scribbling out as much as I possibly could before collapsing from exhaustion.. Dammit, I'm not even Catholic!

OHOHOHOHOHOHOH! I got 70, yes, SEVENTY bonus points on my last lab report for chem because I wrote out all 144 equations, plus the net ionic reactions. Not listening to the teacher pays off, I suppose. I love this class. Highlight of my day.

Wow. You're a nerd. Did you even need those bonus points? xD

Gratz on being valedictorian xD What grade are you in? (Senior? :o)

Also, just screw all the other towns and go to Venice the whole time both years. Venice was one of my favorite vacations... it's just so awesome :D (Although I also went when it wasn't mosquito season... so be careful about that xD)

You had a giant workload in 5th grade, too :beef: Every grade younger than me is crazy, it seems.

I love and hate neglecting my schoolwork. Tomorrow is the start of Thanksgiving break, and our math teacher gave us math homework. AAAaand I have to still do my Williamsburg Journal. My mom just ordered the pictures today that I need for the photo journal. =(

I got an incomplete on one of my S.S. sheets. It was this thing where before our teacher taught us about the topic, we would answer true or false questions about that topic to see what we knew(ex: Was Columbus a mapmaker before he went sailing? My answer: Yes). After we learned about the topic we would circle which answer was right, and then write some facts about it(ex: Actual answer to question: Yes). I barely wrote down any facts in the fact boxes, and she was grading the papers on effort. So I got an incomplete. ): I'm not sure how much of that paper counted for your grade, hopefully if I ace the Road to Revolutionary War test I can still get an A honor roll at the end of this quarter.

Good luck with that. I've got German, French, English, Programming and Media Studies to contend with. Higher English looks like it will be a b****** to get an A in.

Discrete math, Japanese, American Lit, and "Videogames and Learning" for social sciences. I hear it's a pretty interesting class from my roommate, so it should be good.
Hi! I've largely stepped back from C-R due to life stuff. Please contact one of the other staff members for help!

Well, actually my speech was so awesome they want me to give it again :nick:

(and not in a sarcastic `it-was-horrible-and-I-failed-the-first-time-so-I-need-to-make-up-the-grade-by-doing-it-again` way. In a literal `it-was-a-contest-and-I-made-it-to-the-next-round-(although-I-have-to-give-the-same-speech-in-that-round)` way.

...Oh, and the speech is about PW :godot: )

Lucky. My teachers seem slightly upset whenever I give speeches.

WAIT WHAT. How can you write a speech about Phoenix Wright? I can't even remember all the times his life was threatened!
