Has anyone tried this? It's an awesome game. You build stuff, and hide from monsters.

The entire game is made out of blocks, even the playable character. You start off in the middle of nowhere, and you must survive. During the day you can collect resources such as wood and coal, and build your shelter. During the night, you should be hiding, as many scary monsters such as zombies, giant spiders, skeletons wielding bows and arrows and exploding creepers seek to do you harm.

What makes it impressive is how huge and endless the landscape is. It's randomly generated, so no-one will have the exact same game, and there are impressive caves and beautiful landmarks all around. The size of each map is said to be eight times the size of Earth.

The graphics may look outdated by about 20 years, but it's part of the charm. What seems at first like a simple game sucks hours out of your life. If you ever needed an excuse to go back to your Lego kit you had as a kid without others looking down on you, this is your answer.

It's currently in its Alpha phase, which means you can get it at 50% off (€10) until it reaches Beta, and get all the updates for free.

Haven't played it yet, but I want to so bad. I'm just on the verge of convincing my parents to buy it :)

I found out about from my History Teacher. She's a pretty hardcore player, and recommended it to our whole class. She's said it's the most addicting awesome game ever.

And I dunno, are they upgrading the graphics in the beta version?

I'm pretty sure that the graphics looking like they do is a stylistic choice. Anything they change would be to look better within the boundaries (they changed from flat opaque clouds to blocky transparent clouds, as an example).

And yes, Minecraft is good fun. :) -- Pteryx

If you're having framerate troubles, I'd suggest two things.

1: Play it offline. The first time you boot up the launcher you'll have to connect it to the internet, but after that, you can simply disconnect before you launch it, and when it fails to connect, select Play Offline.

2: Bring up the fog. Fog minimizes the distance you can see, which means it's running less and isn't struggling as much. Use the F key to toggle between four different fog settings.

Played the online version: it's fun.
Sadly, I wasn't patient enough to build anything awesome (e.g. a house or castle) with these blocks... I ended up building a huge and crappy tower, so that I was able to look over the whole island. I also dug myself into the center of the earth.

btw. the game works fine for me.

I tried, but it doesn't even load up, it gives me an error screen. I googled the error code, and it turns out my graphic card is the problem. It's a GeForce 4, so yeah, it doesn't surprise me.

I still wouldn't call Minecraft a "game", but more of a toy.

That being said, MC is addicting. I'm trying to get all my buds to get into it.

Ughh, I fail so badly at this game.

You see, I have a terrible memory, and I had this one genius idea: I built my house far away from my spawn, and then in the night, carrying 58 arrows with me, and 13 blocks of iron, I decided to walk around, only to find a creeper, which promptly exploded. What's worse, is that I never found my house again. I lost all my resources <_<

Also, does anyone know about the duplicating glitch? I just found it yesterday. I only used it once, 'cause it's so cheap, but...

Spoiler: Glitch
What you have to do is, put an item in your chest, then click esc. Then, in the bottom left corner, wait till it finishes auto-saving, and then hit esc. again. Then, take the item from your chest, and put it in your inventory. Next, open up your task manager, via ctrl + alt + del (for a PC), and terminate the application. When you reload your game, the duplicated item will be in your inventory and your chest! :redd:

I once built a completely legitamite diamond tower. Five stories, 10x10x5 rooms, with a huge-ass glass replica of Kami's Lookout. Then I got the Aether and it conflicted with a previous weapon mod. I had to delete my world ;_;

DOUBLE-POST FOR A CAUSE!
I got a server up and running! I'm doing a map called Sunburn Islands. It's part of the Super Hostile collection, where the goal is to complete the elusive Victory Monument using only the wool and ore blocks obtained from treasure chest hidden on the surface, deep underground, or in the deadly dungeons. You cannot use wool gotten from a sheep for the monument, and you cannot dye wool. So far, I've got the first dungeon beat, turned the Victory Monument into my base of operations, and am slowly raiding the second dungeon, with a major problem: humans are spawning.
EDIT: A pre-release version of 1.8 has been released! Notch is confused about this! Creative mode rocks! The hunger bar blows! I haven't found anything worthy of mention! GET IT NOW.

I have a question about 1.8.
If I use my world from 1.7.3, where do I find the NPC towns and abantioned mineshafts?

That's a very good question. I wonder if they generate randomly and then stay there of if you do indeed need to start a new world.

I'm terrified to see an Enderman, I really am. :x

You have to start a new world. And all the villages will be empty until 1.9.
On the bright side, jump strikes are hard to get, experience orbs won't do anything for six months, and best of all, Endermen teleport through walls if they're chasing you!

I stocked up on beef and had a crazy monster-raping-poison-spider-silverfish-random-squid-spawning first night. MAN it was awesome. But I still haven't found a NPC village. Just wastelands. Abd I re-opened a world where I ran to the Farlands for charity!
DO NOT DO IT.

I dunno. But there is fence gates, glass panes, and iron bars which makes building houses so much cooler.
And I think plopping a pumpkin on your head can either hide you from zombies or from Endermen. I never wanted to try this, myself.

I'm so excited about 1.8! Once it gets done all the way (so that I don't have to worry about furnace crashes and super-slowdown), I am totally going to go nuts all over the place. Right now I'm working on a strangely shaped building in one file and in another working on completing the "on a rail" achievement (I'm 2/3rds there!).

That reminds me, I still have to update my texture pack for 1.8 since the current pack template was probably grabbed from the pre-release by now. I wonder what I should make my endermen look like...

I hear there's an update for the pre-release. You gotta download the PR seperately, then replace your minecraft.jar with this one.

No, you start taking damage. It's happened to me on my server. Speaking of which, anyone wanna join? It runs off my laptop though, so don't expect more than 30 fps at any given moment. Hell, don't count on 20.
And 1.9 Prerelease is buggy as hell.

To play the multiplayer, you need to find and connect to a multiplayer server. Mojang don't run any themselves, so you need to find/make one with friends.
Does we even do these things anymore?

I don't see the point of having both, tbh. Especially since it's optimised to be used by keys and mouse.
