From the creators of the Fire Emblem series, comes another turn-based, strategy game. Different to the FE games, Advance Wars' gameplay and mechanics are similar to FE's, but different in many aspects. You take the role of a Commanding Officer (CO) and lead your soldiers into victory (strategically).

Cannot believe there wasn't a thread for a series as awesome as this one. :grey:
It made the GBA and NDS what they are today! :phoenix:
Here's to hoping they'll release a 3DS game~ :javado:

We're gonna need a big high five happening right here, right now.

Seriously, I love these games. A lot of good memories from them and the people who play them. I'm just disappointed there was no announcement of a 3DS entry at E3. Maybe after Paper Mario...?

(Though I must ask, why omit Days of Ruin in the "games" section?)

Me too!! :maya: I got through the first two games, currently playing Dual Strike (which is a M.A.S.S.I.V.E. improvement from the last two). It certainly grabs unto the DS' technology and makes it a fun experience! I adore the two-COs feature (my pairing is Colin/Rachel because of Colin's discounts and Rachel covers for Colin's low power).

The first time I played these games, I was like; "Damn! These games are G.O.O.D."!

A 3DS entry would be A.W.E.S.O.M.E.!

Oh yeah, Intelligent Systems is also behind Paper Mario~

What are you talking about? It's there. And DoR was like a TOTALLY independent game in the series (but I still loved it). :hotti:

Oh, Advance Wars!

I missed playing these games, time to go back to Dual Strike and Days of Ruin haha. Very interested to seeing another game coming out, but in the meantime guess we'll just have to wait.

Days of Ruin's campaign was great, just too bad they didn't have tag COs. =(

A-ha...! Found my way here at last. :udgy:

Aaaah...Sweet good old AW...
How come I allways end up playing good games only by accident?

It was a friend of mine who just happened to buy AW2 and then told us all about it.
Of course, our gang played a lot together even with that one game cassette,
but we, me included, bought our own copies soon after that.
Then we got DS:s and bought Dual Strike.
Each one of us. Oh sweet lord how much fun did we have back then.
Then, by a miracle, I happened to find the first AW game for GBA.
It was a bit pricey, but let me tell you; those things are RARE in here.
So...Of course I bought it. :D
And now I even have Dark Conflict on my shelve.
Totally love this game serie.

_______________________________________

One of the reasons I like this is because it's turn based.
I suck at strategy games and I'm a TOTAL n00b in real time strategy games.
This way I even get a chance.

My favorite CO is Max.
I hardly use indirect units and I don't like navy units.
I mostly use just tanks, bombers and infantries,
so Max is an ideal character for me. He is just amazing.
With right character skills and super power even his tank becomes strong as Neotank.

The first time CO pairings are introduced, my favorite pairing was Colin+Rachel. Colin because of his discounts and Rachel because she covers for Blue Moon's rich boy's low-firepower.

Oh yeah, tag combination's. forgot them.

My favorites are Max and..Well...Anyone that can deal lot's of Damage.
Not Grit though. He's helpful to Max's in-direct units, I confess that, but it means 'bout half of your army is worthless when using them.
No. Personally I go for Hachi, for obvious reasons.
First buy tanks like a madman and then just...well...rumble.
Cheap, I know.

Other pair I like is with Andy.
Healing is never bad thing.
Basically any person that can do much damage.

There is one pair I find particularly useful. Who are they?
Drake and Olaf. I think you guys get what I'm trying to say, don't you.
First let Drake use his super so all the enemy units lose -2 HP and half of their fuel.
Then switch to Olaf (since I don't like fog) and the enemy loses -2HP AND they're fuel consumption rises.
Olaf also get's his snow power bonus and you also lessen the move ratio of the enemy. for two turns.
So with Drake & Olaf Tag we get:
- All enemy units -4HP...Ouchie...!
- All enemy units -½ of their fuel + their fuel consumption rises. Basically all aircraft will be taken down.
- Enemy movement goes down, while you can still sprint like you normally would.
- Olafs offensive stats rise to 130 and to 110
- Enemy loses TONS of his/her money because of fuel refill and repairs
...Now is that deadly or what?

Yeah XD I used that combination for Drake and Olaf. Sucked the fuel outta em.

Loved the ridiculous amount of power you could get from Tags there.

Heres one:

Eagle and Sami (it's even recommended)
It requires massive amounts of power to use but it would pay off.
Bomb your way to the HQ with Eagle's power
Send T-Copters over massive distances thanks to their second turn.
Capture instantly with Sami's power for the game XD.

Though I never did get around to beating Days of Ruin and now I can't find the game argh..

Personally I like to think that the DoR/DC is the same universe as Wars World,
but only YEARS later. Andy and the gang dying ages before the events of DoR.

Oh, out of curiosity, if you could create a commanding officer for the game what would he be like?
Take it seriously people; nothing totally overpowered like; Super Power only, one star, attack of all units is 999%, movement = 99, etc.
And if possible, try making him/her in the way you play.
For example, me making an direct unit specialist or something like that.

Think of his/her power, super, possible tags, strengths and weakness's and country.
Also, if you'd like; also make an DoR/DC version fo him/her.
Then and his/her power, CO zones lenght, strenghts and weakness's and army.

Mine would be like this:

Spoiler: Dual Strike
Name: Zinle
Country: Orange Star (because I like that gang most :P)
Bio: Specially trained by Max. Inherited his teachers methods and uses direct units.
Hit: Winning
Miss: Waking up early

Strenghts: Movement in forest = 1, firepower of tank units = 110%
Weakness's: Naval units defense and offense = 80%

Power: Cover Fire (***)
Firepower of all direct units, except infantry and naval units, rises to 130%
and also the same units defense rise to 105%

Super: Z Blast (***XXXX)
Firepower of all direct units, except infantry and naval units, rises to 175 %
and also the same units defense rise to 120 %
Their movement also increases by 2 spaces.

I know it seems bit overpowered, but it's pretty much like Jess's DS super.
She gets movement +2, fuell and ammo supply and 150% offensive capabilities.
I get more firepower and defensive boost with a cost of the fourth star. (Jess = ***XXX)

Tags:
- Max - 120% - Rumble Blast
- Andy - 110 % - Battle Aid
- Jess - 110 % - Roll Over
All in OC: 105% (if inventing a name is needed; Sami: Cover March, Rachel: Lucky Strike, Nell: Blast Blessing, Hachi: Blast March)
Grimm: 105% (if inventing a name is needed: Direct Hit)
Zak/Koal: 105% (if inventing a name is needed: Flashing Strike)
All else in BH: 90% (naming would be too big list :P)

Battle skills I'd use:
1. Star power / Power meter fills quickly
- I usually use this with everyone, so...
2.Ranger / Woods attack +10%
- Already movement = 1 in woods, so why not get a boost also?
3.Brawler / Direct attack + 8%
- More firepower never hurts anyone...except the enemy :P
4.Synergy / Tag CO's attack rises 8%
- Oh Max...We're gonna have fun busting the enemy... :D

Spoiler: Days of Ruin / Dark Conflict
Name: Zinle
Army: Brenner's Wolves

CO Zone: Non infantry and navy direct unit attack boost (110%)
CO Zone Range: 2
Power: Boosts both offense and defense of all units to 125%

Maybe we could share our maps here too?

I dunno, I just assume they're not the same world because the countries have different names and the setting is darker. But like Zinle suggested, it could be years after AW (or even before AW).

Don't claim I'm 100% wrong then if you're not sure yourself though I'm pretty sure it was confirmed to be after AW.

I was still under the assumption that Max and Co were still around though I suppose the whole years passing countries changing names and all makes sense that their time is long past.

What I don't like about DoR is that it lacks more characters. AW did a fine job adding lots of characters and having all of them involved in the same situation and helping each other.

Well there might be a sequel and could amp it up a bit then.

The original Advance Wars had....about 10 or 11 CO's playable.
I count roughly 12 for Dark Conflict so I wouldn't put it down just yet.

Just cause it went from Dual Strike (with it's MASSIVE roster) to a whole new setting probably makes the small crowd seem smaller.

Yeah, her.
In terms of abilities, he's the counterpart (I also love his theme). But the socialite has that Adder's:

Self-Centeredness (it's all about her, her, oh, and did I mention her?).
Narcissism (she's awesome in urban areas, right >>).
Cowardliness (everything is Lash's fault).

The only difference is that she likes shopping, whereas, Adder... I dunno. xD

@Pierre
Thanks, I like myself too :D
Meh...Maybe both def and atk boost is bit much but...

BTW...Speaking of disappearance of Adder and Flak,
Isn't there some rumors of them having connections with Koal/Zak and Jugger?
I mean...Jugger = Flak in pretty muvh every way, so it could be him.
Maybe Flak died in war, but our little genious Lash transported his brains (or what was left from them) into Jugger or something?
Something like that with Koal too. Maybe his like a clone of Adder, but bit modified version?

I know it sounds far fetched,
but in theory it could be possible right?
And it'd also explain some things, right?

I'm pretty sure they were alive (but not present) in DS because the other COs that weren't present were still fighting Black Hole in Macro Land.

True they said it, but...There is just one thing tha came in my mind.
They let Sami, Grit, Eagle and Sonja out of there so...Maybe those two really did die.
I mean...First Andy and Sami (for example) take care of Adder who dies. Sami goes to help the others and Andy is leaves to take care of the rest of BH troops that still exist.
That would be one possible answer, right?

Meh...I'm just overthinking it, I know.
But it's fun :P

Neither nation looks like the kind to kill Black Hole COs, I mean, they've all had the opportunity to do so, but they didn't. Also, was it just me, or did they ruin Lash's and Hawke's character in DS? Lash isn't arrogant about her genius anymore and Hawke isn't as epic as he used to be... (They also ruined his theme ;~;).

Could look on the more positive alternative.

Flak and Adder donned their alternate outfits (civilian clothes) and went about regular lives undercover.

And I reckon only Eagle, Kanbei and Olaf....on a REALLY bad day would kill an opposing CO....which is really concerning considering how many lives are spent each encounter. Even then their second in commands are laid back/smart enough to persuade them out of it.

In fact Eagle is awful for that....end of the first game "Rivals" battle....so many pointless lives lost XD

I also thought of that.

Dual Strike has a couple of fights like that, two that I remember are when Sensei and the other fat CO first arrive, then there's Jess/Red and that weird-knight wannabe.

HEY! Javier is a lover and a gentleman! He is everything a man should be! Plus he's more or less unstoppable with any towers. Just a shame the towers weren't really used on many maps.

I never got the purpose of Comm Towers, could anyone tell me? They seem to make the game easier, according to some experts...

You don't need to be an expert to get the game easier.
Com towers rise your defense and offense.
The more you capture, the merrier for you.

Javier, on the other hand, becomes kinda cheap with Com towers.
He's basically the most defensive battler you can use
and if you use him against your friends on map with lot's of COM towers, they're gonna hate you.
Why?
Javier with 0 COM towers: Ha...! Not so pimp without your towers, eh?!
Javier with 1 COM towers: Ok, I can still manage, but better not make any needless risks...
Javier with 2 COM towers: How. Am. I. Supposed. To. Damage. Him?!
Javier with 3 COM towers: *throws DS at the wall*

And it gets even more stupider,
since his power doubles the effect of the COM towers he has (basically meaning if you have 1 tower and use power; you have the effect of 2 towers.)
AND...His super TRIPLES the effect of towers (1=3 and 3 =9 etc.)
And when that happens you have three options:
1. Just hope you got enough direct firepower to hurt him even a little. Indirects will do absolutely NOTHING on him at then.
2. Capture towers from him and hope you won't kill yourself in the process.
3. Just turn the power of DS off

Therefore Javier is quite the awesome gentleman, it's just a shame barely any maps used many COM towers.

If I recall correctly he has high defense against indirect units as standard which is pretty handy on it's own.

Plus he also has a powerful Tag with Kanbei called Code of honour....oh it's hilarious how little damage foes do to you.

Furthermore he has some brilliant quotes:

"Mighty spire of communication! Imbue my blade with stabby might!"

"Allow me to slap the foe with extreme prejudice!"

To name some.

Ah, Advance Wars. Lovely series. Along with Fire Emblem, they are my favorite strategy series.

My personal favorite tag team is Eagle and Andy. One, because I like their rivalry. Two, because they are quite deadly. After Eagle makes his move and attack the opponents, Andy can replenish any lost health and keep up the attack, making it into a defensive strategy as well as offensive. And that's always nice. =3

And yes, I really want a 3DS title too.

This topic is making me want to dig out my old carts and get back to playing. I never did actually beat "The Final Battle!" in AW1, despite having the dream team of Andy/Grit/Eagle.

Bumping. Over the past two weeks or so I played through AW:DS' normal campaign for the first time since it came out, limiting myself to no skills as an extra challenge. Breezed through for the most part, S-Rank overall and I think 4 A-Ranks (Victory or Death, Crystal Calamity, Pincer Strike, For the Future) with Max/Hawke/Lash as my top 3 COs (only due to my gunning for their wallpapers). Much to my amusement, I finished the volcano mission on the last day possible and still got 100 for speed.

I may attempt a "Normal Campaign" Hard Campaign run - that is, limiting myself to the COs available for each mission in Normal Campaign and no skills. Suicide? Possibly.

It's funny because I've been Skype chatting with a friend who was playing it. I absolutely love this series and have played every single game. It still ranks below Fire Emblem for me, but what a pleasant series indeed.

Those final fights are always brutal. Takes me about 18-25 days generally just to beat them. >.>

Yeah it was a real pain in the first game for me to beat it.
That is until I redone the game and took him on with KANBEI AND EAGLEEE!

I wouldn't even use Andy if I had the option

Huh...Seems I wasn't the only one hit by nostalgia...
I've been playing them again too. :D

@Boltie
- Hmm...Maybe I should do something like that too...You know, limiting my CO's and Skills.
It's actually funny how easy the Dual Strikes Hard Campaing really is if you use other CO's.
For me it's way easier than even the normal campaign.
Kanbei + Anyone with supportive skills for the win. Or tag him with Hachi.
...Cheap? Yeah...

@others
- ....Yeah...The final fights can be bit brutal sometimes.
For me the hardest final fight is the one is Days of Ruin / Dark Conflict.
It's funny how it can be both easy or total nightmare.
Sure, if you play with certain strategies it's easy as hell,
but if you screw even a bit up you should restart immediately.
Hehe...I still remember when I first played it and got the screwed up thing.
Day 01: Oh lookie lookie! Seems I already have a bomber?! Man this'll be EASY...!
Day 02: Chaaaargee...!
Day 03: ...Ok...Where's my bomber?
