You can post here if you want to know any good games for the iOS (iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad).

Lemme start with the obvious: Angry Birds, Cut The Rope.

Higurashi's first 4 episodes are available for $1 each. I'm playing ep. 1 right now, it's a great story.

I Must Run - Difficult Auto-Scrolling Platformer Free version linked
ImageSteamPirates - Toned Down Humorous RPG. Quite Good
ImageMecho Wars - Advance Wars Clone. Eh Graphics, but the gameplay's the same.
ImageSaving Private Sheep - It's like Angry Birds... but less sling shots and more platform breaking. Worth it just for the opening movie.
ImageFastar! - Silly Action game that makes fun of RPGs. Very short. Very good.
ImageAntrim Esc - First two games are out. Short indie adventure game. Highly Recommended. Not unlike Trace Memory/Another Code which in extension makes them not unlike Hotel Dusk. I can't wait for chapter 3.
ImageWatson the beginning - The most Ace Attorney like game on the app store. Check it out, it's great. Hope they make a sequel.
ImageScarlett - Only the first episode is out. Very nice adventure game.
ImageThe Incident - Platformer by some of my favorite Mac devs. Avoid falling Lego blocks, Fridges, and Flux Capacitors as you climb a pile of junk. Cool SNES era styled graphics. Links with iPad.
ImageTrundle - Stress free action puzzler
ImageRadiant - Galaga inspired space shooter
ImageHighborn - HIGHLY Recommended Tactical RPG. Very funny. 3 Chapters are up. There's a free version also somewhere.
ImageHills and Rivers Remain - Square Enix RTS game. Not bad.

ImageImageImageHook Champ, Super Quick Hook, Hook World - Grappling Platformer series. I highly highly HIGHLY recommend them all. These guys have become my favorite iOS developers. Another game Mage Gauntlet should be out soon. Seems like Chono Trigger, but action based?

I believe Touch Detective is on there. Additionally The Secret of Chateau Moreau is a very Hotel Dusk inspired adventure game that's pretty great. (Also, Ace Attorney is on there! ...not like you need it again...)

Well... my latest desperate attempt to track down a game similar to 999 made me stumble upon a forum, where someone mentioned a game for the Ipod Touch/Iphone called Cause of death.. the first chapter can be downloaded for free and I am currently playing it myself, and it's not that bad actually :larry2: (not like 999 at all, but still)

*Searches on App Store* Doesn't look too bad. And it's free! Always a good thing :P I'm installing it now. Might have a play tonight.

I downloaded it about 30 minutes ago, so I can't tell whether or not it's that good yet :P but someone who enjoyed 999 also enjoyed this one, and that is reason enough to give it a go :phoenix: (and the whole "free game" thing of course :P)

Oh god, no. Not 'Cause of Death'. That's EA's re-hash of 'Surviving High School'. Episodic, crime scenes are generic backgrounds with no relevance. I don't know how to describe it other then I couldn't stand it.

I'll check out the Secret of Chateau Moreau when I get some time.

I agree. I liked the story, but it's way too short and expensive for it's own good. I mean, one hour of gameplay for 3 dollars? No, thank you.

@MercuryKitten

I know about Touch Detective. However, I am hesitant to buy it because of in-app purchases - what if I accidentally delete the app? Would the purchases stay if I re-install the game?

With regards to Nick Chase... be careful. I don't own the game myself, but I tried the demo. It does have a Hotel Dusk 'air' about it. But it's more a hidden object game then one that involves actual deduction. That part isn't bad (Even though I'm personally not a fan of hidden object games), but I think the dev hasn't been proactive in keeping it bug free since its release. Buyer beware.

With Mist and Riven... They're ports, in the very performance of sense, also HUGE download files. I haven't tried the games myself, but after reading the reviews, I'd recommend playing them on a platform where the devs put some money into making sure it performed well.

Chaos Rings... Buy one version or the other, don't buy both at once. I hear the sequel is not unlike an expansion plot to the first game, as opposed to an actual sequel. If I were you, I'd try Omega first, might be better?

More suggestions:

ImageBroken Sword 1+ 2: Old Adventure games, Remastered on multiple systems. The iOS port is quality. Highly recommend playing on the iPad. There are a ton of versions depending on language, sequel or prequel, free, and iPad vs iPhone. I don't regret owning these games. They're good.

ImageSong Summoner: Square Enix Tactical RPG. Listening to music on your iPod levels up your minor party members. It's a cool method I wish I saw more of. It's a bit corny with the Music 'theme' but it's a solid Tactical RPG. Trivia: One of the oldest iOS games, as it predates iOS, and was an iPod game.

ImageThe War of Eustrath: A Tactical RPG I HIGHLY recommend. I didn't include this on my original list since it was something I played on the iPad instead of my iPod I keep handy. This game was originally a GBA game, I think it saw limited success in Japan, then got totally redone for iOS. This is a Grade A port. The cast is funny, the illustrations are snazzy, the combat system is cool, and the game is non-linear to boot. Plenty of replay value. If you're going to get a Tactical RPG make it this or Highborn. (Or BOTH!) There's an iPad version and an iPhone version. iPad was linked. Also it appears to be on sale.

An Iphone is so ideal for more mystery/visual novel games and it's sad to see that there aren't many good iOS games in that genre.
And yes, I am referring to Cause of Death, which turned out not to be enjoyable anyway..
Touch Detective on the other hand does look tempting.. and there's a free lite version out there if someone haven't already mentioned that (I think the main character got ADD though :P)

Wooster, the Hook games are surprisingly good! Normally I don't like iOS platformers all that much, but I tried the free version of one of the games and I am already hooked! (ugh.. seriously, no pun intended).

Dead Space is good, if you haven't already been on it for 360. Not cheap though.

I'm definitely going to be checking some of these games out. I got my iPod about 5 months ago, and I've not got many apps at all, which is annoying because the apps are a redeeming feature. I have about 5 games, and I hardly go on any! So yeah, will be using this thread.

You don't know how happy that makes me to hear someone else likes the Hook series. The grappling hook system is perfect for touch screen gaming. Unlike other platformers that mimic the Nintendo platformers. They just don't work without a controller.

As for Touch Detective... it IS a DS game... might want to consider that version instead/inaddition to? There's also a sequel that's DS only.

Thanks for the warnings on Cause of Death and Nick Chase. Neither of them looked particularly good but since I'm a detective/mystery junkie, I was considering them anyway.
I haven't tried Touch Detective yet, I downloaded the demo. I started very briefly playing Watson, and was startled by the fact Watson was a woman! But it seems promising so far.

And for another game that is neither RPG nor Mystery game but is hilarious for all gamers anyway, look into Game Dev Story. It's like a little simulation game where you control your own Game Company, and while I usually don't care for sim games like that, this one's hilarious and fun. (You can unlock an option to make a Lawyer game. I laughed.)

Game Dev story 'is' a good game. But it's 'very' addictive. Not the 'Oh man this game is awesome' addictive, but like alcohol addictive. The game is paced that the longer you play the more you have to play. (Dev cycles get tighter, more buttons you have to tap quicker etc) It got so bad that I had to delete the game after I beat the main story line. Not from disgust but because it's all I would do with any level of intent.

Image Just tried The Secret of Chateau de Moreau and got as far as my First Game over. The art style is an odd mix of Professor Layton, Hotel Dusk. With artistic inspirations from generic Anime, and classical France. I already like the cast. The story telling is not unlike 999, but without the horror, in terms of the POV. All I've got to say is thank for the recommendation folks. I've got something now to preocupy me in this 3DS drought.

I'm enjoying Chateau so much, how about a little ear candy for you folks...
Enjoy the Soundtrack

Beat the first Game over section, although 'survived' is more like it. Apparently 'court' in Chateau is the dinner table, candle sticks mark your HP, not unlike the !'s in PW1. But, in a twist, you have to think on your feet during these times. I think the dinner table plays like Logic Chess does, being that there's a time limit, and you have to answer and say the right things. Thus far, answers can be labeled as "Bad" "Stalling" and "Good"; Bad answers penalize you, and move the game onward. You can get a game over easily that way. Stalling answers... it's like presenting bad evidence in PW. Judge asks you to answer again. You're penalized, just like in PW. Good answers move you forward, and don't put out your candles.

Also, because the game has '40' alternative endings, your actions are not unlike 999. Although, instead of going through different numbered doors, you're only allowed to talk to some people about X number of topics. I presume what you tell/ask, or don't tell/ask people, effects the outcome of the game.

Hard to say this early in the game. You meet a ton of people in a short amount of time. So you don't get any real time to gauge the characters. I will say that thus far they all have quite distinct personalities, ranging from Motherly, Bubbly, Haute, Scoundrel, etc etc... Without animations like in Hotel Dusk or Ace Attorney, it's harder to gauge the characters off the bat. But characterization is still much better then Time Hollow, and I enjoyed that game.

I will say however, that the first Dinner table scene gave me a bit of a thrill.

Spoiler: Early game spoilers. I think it's safe to read, but...
In a single plot twist, a... mostly civil group of people is mad at YOU. While fighting the clock, I'm trying to both, deal with their rage, disprove <plot twist> without evidence. Honestly, if this were in real life, I might be among the people yelling at our protagonist. The plot twist, in my mind, isn't as great as the major one in Again: Eye of Providence, but it's still good, and handled better in this game, then it would've in AA were it in AA.

If CR had a Book Game Club, I'd put this on the list.

Glad you're enjoying it, Wooster! Let us know when you get the True End what you think in summary, I'd love to have a conversation with someone about it. (And we SHOULD have a CR Game Club. I got a ton of my favorite game recs here, including Layton, which I unbelievably would have passed on were it not for the recs on here, and 999.)

Edit: And to Jack Lamber - here's my non-spoilery 2 cents. Personally, I don't think it's as good as AA, 999, or Hotel Dusk on its own. But the fact that it could even be good enough to be on the same level of comparison says a lot about it for the fact it's a five dollar iPhone game. There are a few bugs and a few things that I thought could have done better, particularly with the plot and some of the gameplay in the final chapters, but the amount of care and detail put into it does volumes in its favor. Basically, don't expect something better than any of your all-star adventure game favorites for the DS or other more refined consoles, but expect something worth your time.

ImageWas on the family iPad, and discovered that via the last sync with my computer, Touch Detective got installed.

First impressions?

Much better then the DS version. The graphics are much crisper then the DS could allow. And the touch controls appear so far, well designed, arguably better then the DS and the stylus.

My only complaint, is that they didn't do a compile for the iPad. I think it would've translated very well on the larger device. But that's minor in the grand scale.

Grade A port. I say go for it if you haven't played it on the DS already.

Amazon lists the DS game at $20, but you can get it used for (+ shipping) at ~$8. Considering the iOS version is $8.99 via in app purchase, and you get bonus content.

On the other hand, the sequel is still DS only, It costs $15 dollars on Amazon, and $9 used. So there's always more to experience should it suit your interests.

About Touch Detective itself. It plays almost identically to the games I posted earlier, called "Broken Sword", however, it's a horror setting, but with a cast that seems more like they'd fit in a sudo bubbly fantasy world. It's good clean fun.

Just a warning, when you beat case 1, you WILL be scratching your head. But the... very odd solution of case 1 will make much more sense when you get to the end.

Beat Chapter 2 of Chateau

Even though it's chapter 2... I feel like it's chapter 3 or 4 or something...

Spoiler: Chapter 2
From going to everyone hating you for both suspecting you killed the count AND getting the entire inheritance, everyone seems civil this chapter. Or at least, as civil as their base personalities allow. It feels like a lot more time and connections have been made then should have.

Kinda disappointed with the protagonist. He runs around solo, but his monologues aren't as entertaining as Hyde's. But, then again, Hyde is the only soloist I know with the sort of internal monologue that can take on the dynamic of a duo. I will say however the protagonist does narrate similar to Junpie in 999.

Right now, my favorite character is Giz. He says things everyone else is either too polite or too cautious to say. Right now, I don't suspect him of murder, but on the other hand, it would be in character for him to be overly honest about his thoughts on the murder in order to divert suspicions.

My prime suspect, however, has an alibi as of the end of this chapter. And I don't suspect the chef at this point despite the incriminating evidence to the contrary. His agenda appears to be linked to the recipe in the box. He may be an accomplice to murder, whiting or otherwise, but he doesn't strike me as the mastermind.

Edit: Having Trouble with the Piano Puzzle in Chapter 3.

Spoiler:
Sheet music says: Do, Fa, La, Mi; One quarter note followed by 3 8th notes
Notpad says:
Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti Do
C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C

However, translating the notes as C, F, A, E does not open the chest.

Spoiler: Answer for Wooster
I read music, so I don't quite know how the puzzle was supposed to go, but the password (and what the sheet music reads) is CAFE.

Spoiler:
Huh... Those are the same letters I got... but the order is wrong. I guess playing scrabble with the last letters is the final phase? Thanks anyways.

Onward to meet Don Paulo!

Completed Chapter 3.

Not much to say, other then Chapter 3 feels like a sequel to Chapter 1. Add to it that Chapter 2 felt later in the game... it's a fascinating correlation.

I'll say this much, Antonie would make for a very vicious prosecutor. He'd definitely be up higher then any of the AA regulars, but less then Von Karma. Too bad his personality is a bit... generic. He still needs to take monologue lessons from Hyde.

Plot twists and surprises in this chapter however. I like the story telling.

Have you gotten any of the alternate endings yet, Wooster?

And yeah, Antoine is kind of a RPG-hero Everyman, which is a bit strange for such a story based RPG game...
Spoiler: but you see
This kind of gets justified later sort of, depending on how you interpret some of the endings. I wouldn't go as far to say they did it entirely on purpose, but by the end of it his design will either make more sense to you or will make no sense to you.

He would be a vicious prosecutor! But then again, it all comes in to how you play him. Have you tried intentionally screwing up some of the answers from what you believe they should be yet? Perhaps you're just playing him ruthlessly!

Unless reenacting the 'incident' from Phantom of the Opera counts... no I've gotten no alternative endings yet.

Spoiler: Vicious Prosecutor
Of course he's vicious! A friend of the Count, who looks suspiciously like Don Paulo, come in, drunk and stupid, and in the middle of being accused again for rigging the will and murdering the Count, IMPLICATES THE LOCAL DRUNK DEBTED FRIEND... And then goes 'Lol he didn't kill him'. Okay, he didn't say HE KILLED HIM. LOL NO HE DIDN'T. More like, his attack on him, his character, and actions is totally in line with Phoenix or Apollo prepping a witness for the accusation. Then at the end saying he didn't do the murder... it's a plot twist, but I'm quite sure Marco has walked away with Traumatic Stress disorder.

I am lolling so hard over here you have no idea.
All I have to say is see what happens when you get more wrong.
Also if you don't feel like ever sleeping again look in the suspiciously closed closet with the owner still present.
