Hey guys!

You like Professor Layton, right?

How about Rhythm Heaven?

Elite Beat Agents?

Now try to imagine a game that takes a bit of all those games, and stars a gentleman thief, a beautiful violinist, and Napoleon Bonaparte back from the dead. Does that sound like the most awesome game ever or what wait don't bother answering that it's a rhetorical question of COURSE it does

This game's only gotten my attention recently, with the influx of trailers from GoNintendo. But I have to say, I haven't been this excited for a Rhythm game since EBA... actually EBA's the only such game I've been interested in.

But I'll be disappointed if this game doesn't kick off.

Considering it's called "Rhythm Thief", I wonder if it's closer to Magic Kaito than Layton or something. It also reminds me a bit about Warioware.

Anyway, it seems like it should be a great game, but... it doesn't really interest me much :yuusaku: It seems like the type of game that would, but... I wanna know exactly what music they use in the game. That'll probably be a big factor in deciding whether to get it not.

Wouldn't know. The release date has been pushed back to either June or July I think. Looking forward to some solid reviews on this. I know I can't expect something as awesome as Elite Beat Agents… but it should get close enough I would hope?

From what I've read, the game isn't worth 40$ (40€ in Europe).
It's a rather sweet game, but apparently, it's :

1) way too short
2) gameplay doesn't feel 'accurate' (and indeed, I played the demo, and it's fairly easy... too easy actually, to get perfects).

Guess Sega would've been better releasing it on the e-Shop, even for 15$.

Well, I did buy it like a sucker off Amazon. And I really wasn't disappointed.
Think Layton, but with rhythm games instead of puzzles. And the demo has the three easiest minigames in the game.
Now add generally likeable characters, a really nasty villain and as much pairing off the two main characters as much as physically possible.
You now have something approximating the game.

It isn't too long, and some of the rhythm puzzles are a tad tricky (Okay so one is completely broken but it's easy to get around with some patience and a bit of practice.), it's still rather rewarding and we get a big fat juicy sequel hook at the end.
If this series doesn't take off I will be seriously disappointed.

Okay, I tried the demo since it finally hit the US eShop store.

I'm… a bit conflicted by the game.

Visually the game is outstanding! I mean seriously. Give this game a perfect 10 for visuals. They hit that perfect combination of darkness, light, and neon colors that is both out there, and yet pleasant to view. That's a very rare combo. Level intros use a lot of appealing vector-ish 2D effects. Very smooth.

On the other hand the gameplay is a bit flat. I think I've been spoiled rotten by Elite Beat Agents, but tapping in tempo with such spacious gaps doesn't appeal to me. Then again, it could be like Agent Spin and J in EBA compared to the rest of the game, so I'm going to cautiously reserve judgement there.

If I hear good things about the story and that there's an actual difficulty curve, I may just buy it.

I have the full game (and have had it for quite a while) and finished it etc.

The demo rhythms are the easiest ones in the game. There isn't a defined difficulty curve as such, given an arbitrary difficulty rating, nevertheless I began to feel challenged as the game wore on.

Story wise, it's about as clever as the plot of a generic cartoon. Despite this, it manages to be rather flashy about it, so the plot, while slightly shallow is still fun to be shallow in. The characters are adorable, there are a few moments that make you laugh, make you cry (mainly in impotent rage after failing a rhythm), and make you start chewing your nails in nervousness (during a rhythm chewing on a pen is a good subsitute.)

Onto the cons.
1.) The arbitrary difficulty rating means virtually nothing.
2.) The punishments for missing are rather severe. (For instance, one rhythm can have you at a perfect score for the entire rhythm, fail on the last note reduces your rank to the lowest it can get.)
3.) The things you will plead with Satan to trade for a good rank on R31 will surprise you. (Protip: The items shop is your very, very good friend here.)
4.) The gyro controls are confusing to say the least. When to tilt is not specified and they register about 75% of the time. This is especially annoying on the compulsory R31. :acro:

Played the demo a couple days ago, now I'm all excited for the game again. Sega USA really couldn't have possibly picked a worse release date, though.

Average consumer: Hmm, I don't really need TWO music games this month, so should I wait until next week to grab this one starring some characters I've never heard of before, or should I get the FINAL FANTASY music game tomorrow?

Of course, I'm not exactly an average consumer so I'll be getting both, but the point stands. I'm hoping the demo will at least sway some buyers.

Someone put up the soundtrack via Youtube. I totally dig the theme of this game. Might be a day one pick up for me.
