From Eurogamer:

Quote:
Capcom has announced Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy HD for iOS devices.

It includes the first three games in the Ace Attorney series in HD: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Justice for All, and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations.

Each game includes all the content from the Nintendo DS versions with ugraded HD graphics and on-screen controls "fine-tuned" for the iOS platforms.

The compilation also comes with the Everyone Object mode. It lets you press a button to email or tweet friends the series' catchphrases, such as "Objection!", "Hold it!", and "Take that!" alongside an animated image.

It's out this autumn for iOS 5.0. You can buy each game individually or as a bundle. The first two chapters of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney will be available as a free demo.

Screens are available at the Eurogamer link. This appears to be a complete localization of GS123HD in Japan, though it's not clear if it'll include the features related to the Ace Attorney film.

The first two chapters? I think the Japanese only had 1-1 as free. I also wonder if they'll keep in the Movie Phoenix Objection.

But yeah, it sounds like the commenter was right from ~8 months ago.

Capcom should be nice and update the ones on WiiWare too.

What's that about the Movie Phoenix's objection? Was that just in Everyone Object mode, or throughout the whole game? :eh?:

It was part of the objection generator. I haven't figured out how to/bothered to unlock it in the main game, but the files are there. The Movie Objection generator is unlocked by default on the standalone objection generator game which also contains 1-1.

Cool enough for folks who don't have it I get.

Think the demo is awfully generous though, just under half the game.
Let's hope the port is as smooth as the GS12&3 version in Japan.

This is great news! At least this means that Capcom hasn't totally given up on the series yet. Granted, this release requires so little translation work (as all of it has been done already) that it probably isn't a good indication of how much work Capcom will put into a US AA. But at least this gives me hope. I will be buying the full game on day 1, if only to show Capcom there is still a market for the series.

Oh, and when it says chapters, are we sure that means Case 1-1 and 1-2? I thought it meant Case 1-1 and the first "chapter"/section of Case 1-2, the investigation phase. This seems like it would be a more profitable cut off point.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

You'd think that, but no. In GS123HD the game is divided by game, and then again by case, and further by part. 1-1 is divided into 1 part, and 1-2 is 4 parts.

So total 5 parts are freebies.

1-3 is 6 parts, 1-4 is 8 parts 1-5 is 14 parts.

So for GS1, you get 5, and they're withholding 28. Also consider: 1-1 has no investigation phase.

In comparison:

GS1: 33 parts (19 without 1-5)
GS2: 24 parts
GS3: 31 parts

When put into that perspective, Capcom did lie to the fans when they said GS2 was as long as GS1DS and therefore didn't warrant an extra case.

For some reason the font in the text box is really bugging me. Can't put my finger on it.

I dunno it just looks off...like a bad emulation of Phoenix Wright in the text, spacing makes me think it seems engrishy but nevermind I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to it.

It looks a lot like the text you find in flash files. Since it is an iPhone/iPad app the text needs to be the kind that will resize without pixelating, which is why the text never looks as polished as if you're using one, final resolution as in the DS games. The whole thing looks a little unproffessional [like a flash fan game or something] but they probably need to do that to ensure complete compatibility with all iOS devices.

As for my personal preference, I kinda prefer the look of the original sprites. The HD art doesn't look like it was ever supposed to have been that big.

The jagged edges may be what's driving me crazy. I know for a fact that iOS doesn't support font smoothing, takes too much processing power and the pixels are so small anyways on retina displays that the benefits are slightly greater then null. But the jagged edges are 'very' obvious on the screenshot. I'd wager that Capcom is not using iOS's engine for rendering fonts, and is instead providing their own engine and own font, like they did in Ghost Trick iOS. The benefit is that it makes it easier for Capcom to port to Android, or so I assume. The consequence? It looks like garbage.

Oddly enough the Japanese version doesn't appear jaggy. And viewing the screenshot on iOS, having the image scaled down makes the jaggedness less obvious, but it's still a thorn in my side.

But get used to a lot of 'a matter of just getting used to it'. The Japanese wrapper for the games is a very unpleasant, un-optimized, poor frame-rated, piece of nonsense that has ever been my profuse displeasure to navigate. The games themselves aren't so bad. But the wrapper really is.

Nah. If they used the iOS font engine, everything would scale perfectly. This has to be a case of build once, port everywhere. By everywhere I mean non-iOS.

So how much money does this all cost in Japan? I'd like an idea of what price we might be looking at. This would be buying the series again for a third time for me, and while I'd be happy to do it, only for the right price. Looking at that screenshot, I think it'll look great on an iPhone but perhaps a little weird on an iPad. The font is strange...yeah, like a flash fangame to be sure. It'd be nice if they used something that resembled the DS font really. I'm sure my eyes will adapt to it.

It's ~$15, so half a DS game. It's a steal.

Yeah that's what I meant. I didn't mean that they were using the iOS engine, I meant that they were using vector fonts so that whatever device screen its on, it would scale properly. ;)

I don't think they're even custom vector fonts. Ghost Trick iOS's fonts were very simple monochrome bitmap.

Oh ok haha. Well no matter what it is I'm hoping it means Capcom still has faith in the series.

Was this revealed through an official press release or by some other means? Is Capcom making it really public?

Nah, I poked around Ghost Trick's files. Couldn't find the animations but viewing a particular file in a hex editor betrayed the font system.

Thanks for the tip. Made a post in Trial Minutes and added my thoughts.

Still feel bad about posting things that can be taken out of context, but this is rather explicit in the message, rather then Sven's obviously NDA bound statements that try to say something without saying anything.

I actually meant the actual PW:AA Trilogy HD. Was it announced via a big press release or was it a leak? I hope they made a reasonably big deal out of it, so people will actually buy it.

I'd be very surprised if there wasn't. One already exists in Japan and shares the code with the iOS version. (Which may be the perpetrator as to why there are a TON of interface decisions that make me want to pull my hair out.)

That guy you be ashamed for saying this... though I'm 100% sure that's what Capcom is thinking at the moment.

Hell, the port really does look neat (*__*), but I'll be damned before I spend a single cent on a smartphone game. Especially NOT after the AAI2 and the TWEWY fiascos.

I dunno but I'm a little precautious about how he's voicing this. By basing it on AAT sales on the ipad somehow makes me think they'd be meaning an AAI2 port to iOS instead of 3DS or DS.

The DS is already explicitly out of the question. And while a 3DS port would make money in the West, it might drown in Japan.

Basically it means the only place AAI2 can be profitable World wide is not on Nintendo Handhelds. Could this mean a jump in primary hardware? Maybe. But the series already made a jump to WiiWare and no one called shenanigans.

I honestly don't know if they've ever released that info. But I'm assuming it's not anything to brag about. On the Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney website, they list the series life time sales and also Layton's. Layton while being a DS exclusive more then trounced Ace Attorney, which has been on GBA, DS, PC, iOS, Android, WiiWare, Cellphones etc etc etc.

I think it's safe to assume the WiiWare sales were quite modest, as I'm assuming the DS was where the meat of those numbers were from with the GBA coming after.

That worries me a little bit. If the wiiware titles didn't seel that well then that means there weren't that many new fans drawn in.

Am I the only one who finds those HD sprites awfully cartoonish and out of place?

I guess they had to do it, what with the iOS' low compatibility regarding pixels, but come on. It's like you're playing some sort of Newgrounds flash parody game or something like that.

As for the text, it's also very strange, but that's mainly because we're so used to the regular font (which is very Verdana-like, all "edgey", unlike the new round, full font)

Really hoping for an android version. I'm almost completely off of apple products, and I'd love to be able to play this on my shiny new Nexus 7. I suppose my old iPad 1 could work though. These look like they could open up the series to more people, and consequently maybe effect the localization of AAI2 (although that's just wishful thinking on my part).

Nope, you're not the only one. I [and I think most] agree with you. I don't know why they didn't narrow down those black outlines when they resized the sprites. (Although some of it might be the fact that the art from GS1 was pretty unpolished looking compared to the later games of the series. I'm hoping the other games' art looks less cartoony.)
